Did you see it? It was about DDP reaching out to Jake and Scott Hall and helping them get their lives back on track. Really inspirational. I recommend seeking it out if you haven't seen it. It aired about 2-3 months ago.

because experiencing it in the moment is essential to wrestling.
i got respect for the legends because my pops gave me the knowledge about em.

like i would say The Rock is the GOAT. my pops would say Ric Flair is the GOAT and The Rock is 3 or 4. and i can't get my lil cousin to understand just how much bigger and better The Rock was than that cornball John Cena is now.

so from my time
The Rock
Stone Cold
Undertaker
HBK
Mankind (in all his various forms)
HHH (i'm not w/ his attempts at revisionist history but i love to hate him)
Sting
Bret
Booker T
Jericho

watching the current product is a bit depressing because the standards are just in the gutter. i can't see anybody w/ the potential to break a top 20 list let alone top 10.

I should make it clear that I only watched from Degeneration X through maybe a month after the WCW/WWE merger when I realized that storyline was going nowhere, so 1996-2002 or so? I have no idea what happened to most of these guys afterward other than Shawn Michaels because his PPV matches the past few years came so highly recommended.

The Rock
Shawn Michaels
Steve Austin
Randy Savage
Hollywood Hogan (merely for the performance, he was never a great in-ring guy to me)
Undertaker
Goldberg (say what you will, that gimmick as a 13 year old was EVERYTHING)
Chris Jericho
Kurt Angle
And the Brass Balls Award/Tenth Place finish goes to Shane-O Mac, Jeff Hardy and Mankind

Honestly, I think Shane MacMahon's wrestling career was one of the most amazing things I'll ever see.

Snuka was a heel at first and he was soooo good at that shit, coming into the ring, eating the ring announcer's flower off his lapel..dude was great...I wasn't watching later on.... but his first couple of years in WWF he was awesome

for some reason I keep thinking back to Bash at the Beach Sting, who was still good in the ring but I couldn't care much less about him otherwise. But Crow Sting, as shameless as it was, was a GREAT character with some real gnarly, long burn matches. Plus his baseball bat was honestly wielded much more cleverly than HHH's sledgehammer.

I didn't see Kurt Angle once
I see HBK missing on a lot of lists, which is absurd

Somebody actually listed Ultimate Warrior for crying out loud

Most of you are really just posting your favorites, which is cool if this is a *personal* top ten, and turth be told it's not really clear what the intention of the post was. If it was to take an honest look at the true greats when factoring in all the elements, then this post has failed miserably thus far.

The first question to ask is, how do we weight a list like this? How are we balancing mainstream recognition (guys who draw serious money) with in-ring ability, for example? If we’re looking at top draws, an objective list for that probably reads something like Hulk, Austin, Rock, Flair, Dusty, Bruno, Hall, Nash, Thesz, Savage, Cena, and possibly Brock. Some would probably balk at Hall & Nash, but trust… Hulk needed them just as much as they needed Hulk for the NWO to work and that single handedly reinvented the business. You could argue, say, Piper and Taker in their spot, but IMO there’s no way to discuss top draws without The Outsiders. Nash himself even admits he wasn’t exactly a guy who could light it up in terms of work rate, but let’s be real about how vital he was to the NWO being the monster it turned out to be.

Ring work though? We’re looking at HBK, Flair, Hart, Angle, Benoit, Dynamite, Guerrero, Savage, Jake (let’s be real, he practically wrote the book on ring psychology), and Hennig.

Then we have guys like Scott Hall, who IMO might be one guy Vince seriously missed the boat on because his ring work was superb as were his mic skills and he might well have been a quality draw as the #1 guy if given the shot.

Granted, those lists aren’t bullet proof but IMO they’re solid as hell. My point is, how are people balancing main stream drawing power with work rate?

Guys like HBK can more than hold their own in the promo department and were significant draws in their own right, and the extreme lack of in ring ability of a guy like Hulk gets balanced out by that IMO. So my top six, in no particular order just yet, is Hulk, HBK, Flair, Rock, Savage, Austin, Angle, Hart. That’s your three greatest promos (Hulk, Austin, Rock, obviously) and five guys who were amazing workers with excellent ring work along with quality promo work. Bruno was easily one of the greatest draws ever, so he makes 9. I finalize my list with Cena, because he’s easily a better worker than Hulk and Rock while having immense drawing power of his own, even if he doesn’t add up.

So that’s my ten:

Savage, Hulk, Flair, Rock, Austin, HBK, Bret, Angle, Bruno, and Cena.

Soo... if you didn't read it and just hit fast forward, how do you know what was said? to arrive at this conclusion?

The vast bulk of my post touched on how the lists are created, the intention of the post being unclear as to whether or not it wanted favorite wrestlers or an objective take the actual *best*.

I mean, actually put a little thought into my list and explained my reasoning. God forbid an actual discussion be had on the matter, let's all just post a list, not comment on other lists, and express no opinions on them, why don't we? Because that's SO entertaining.

>Which, for all your complaining, looks about the

"Wowsers. Some truly terrible lists in here "
"All my complaining" was limited to four sentences:

"I didn't see Kurt Angle once
I see HBK missing on a lot of lists, which is absurd
Somebody actually listed Ultimate Warrior for crying out loud"

>same as most of the other lists on here.

Did I say all of them were terrible? Most? No? Some? Oh. Ok. You made it sound like I was talking to the whole thread. To most people "some" doesn't mean "all" or even "most" or even "alot". It just means.... some.

one of the things I look at though is the era a guy is from. I just think guys who shined AFTER wrestling hit it big...post hulk-a-mania....post Wrestle-mania 1.... those guys had a platform and a machine to market them that guys before that simply did not have.

To me it required less individual creativity to make it after that because the "machine" was there to push guys...

I just think guys who earned their hype through pure personality in cheap studio interviews..... in bloody matches that were filled with drama (maybe not always the most technically sound wrestlers).... guys like Dusty Rhodes....he took his thing all across the world...before pay per view....and all that....

it's just hard for me to rank guys like angle ahead of guys like the American Dream...

At least, in terms of visibility and marketing.

There’s something to be said for pioneers, for the guys who laid the foundation for other guys who came along. Dusty Rhodes, a guy I genuinely like and admire, embodies the best of an era that was far simpler in every way. Some guys from that era, like Jake, elevated that simpler aesthetic to what amounts to high art in the wrestling world. There’s also something to be said about getting over from territory to territory.

Here’s the problem: that doesn’t change a guys ring work or his promo ability. Dusty was great for his era, but does he translate across the board in his promo and ring work? Jake does, despite having an arguably lesser legacy.

In the end, Kurt Angle is an absolute animal in the ring and on the mic. He’s legitimately beast level in both regards. Would I rather watch an Angle match, or a Dusty match? Would I rather hear Kurt talk or Dusty talk? My answer is Kurt, because The Machine only gives him a platform to do what he does and be seen by a wider audience. The work is still the work IMO, and he outworks most people.

His WCW run was phenominal
In fact that whole division was great

Rey had an it factor that stood and among the rest of his division and his matches with Ultimo, Malenko, etc were fantastic. I'm not really a fan of his WWE iteration though, outside of a few feuds.

In the end, I have not watched his work in Mexican promotions either and that played a role in me omitting him. I'm a huge mark for his WCW run though and the one thing that hurt his standing when I looked at a list was that he's kind of overshadowed by so many of his incredible peers of that era- Benoit, Eddie, and Jericho come to mind. I never liked his mic work though and that was a factor too.

^^^^^ Agreed on all of these, but the rest don't make the cut to me.

I'd replace them with Rock n Roll Express, Midnight Express, Hardys, and Edge & Christian. I think those four are in without question, but there's still two other teams worthy of a top ten slot to me.

I might even have to bump The Rockers for the New Age Outlaws for the sheer bombast of those two. Hart Foundation get bumped in favor of The Outsiders to me, because that's the birth of the NWO, and we all know how that turned out.

In no way can I include Nasty Boyz and Demolition though, not with guys like the APA still out there, who are better and had a far longer lasting impact, impression, memorable moments, etc. Then there are still the Freebirds, etc.

Honestly though this list is tougher than a singles list to me, because there are just SO many guys lingering close to the same level.

I don't see how he cracks Savage, Hart, HBK, Angle, Flair, to say nothing of the big time mainstream cats like Austin, Rock, Hulk, who ooze so much charisma his workrate can make up only so much of the difference.IMO he and Benoit are two sides of the same coin, and Benoit is the superior mic talent. When I take the Promo guys out of the equation, Eddie is in my top ten. When I include them when evaluating all elements though, he doesn't make that particular cut.

Austin - for this promo alone http://youtu.be/jKRe9PAGfCw
Hogan - FUCK OFF he belongs on the list
The Rock - Him too
Duhthy - Yep
Angle

And I see niggas unwisely shitting on Cena in here. Say what you need to say about him being shoved down your throats, blah blah blah, but son has shown up and performed in the big matches, for the most part (I think of matches with CM Punk, Brock Lesnar, and the first Rock match, off-break)...

And it's not a situation where he was just carried in matches with cats like Shawn, Angle, Punk, etc

His willingness to work with pretty much any type of wrestler has been a boon to his career, because he's been able to showcase his range. He doesn't simply get carried in matches with the better technical guys, he actually adapts to their style and wrestles them accordingly. He still has his 5MOD and all that, but unlike cats like Hulk, he's able to wrestle different styles with different people and it doesn't come across as forced like it does with Rock and his SharpShitter, for example.

Because there are better wrestlers....I liked Stone Cold...And I understand his impact, which was MASSIVE....But if I want to dip into that attitude era I go with the Heartbreak Kid or the Rock...

But I'm not mad if someone has Austin on their list...He was very important to the '90s wrestling scene...

Stone Cold, though

He had fantastic matches in WCW, both as a singles guy and in the Hollywood Blondes tag team with Brian Pillman

Even when he first got to WWE and was known as The Ringmaster he had stellar matches

He didn't really blow up as Stone Cold until after Owen Hart nearly broke his neck, and many of his matches suffered quality-wise as a result

If you've *actually* watched *wrestling*, like *actual *actual wrestling* all these years, you’d know that he had serious chops. Steve Austin was a hand’s hand, a wrestler’s wrestler, a mechanics mechanic. He was essentially Curt Hennig, Vol. 2 prior to his neck injury, which is saying something. It’s saying an awful lot, actually. Even as a ten year old, the gap between his workrate and that of his peers was glaring. Unless he was in the ring with Steamboat, it always looked like everyone else was several classes below him. I marked out when he came to WWE, and while I thought The Ringmaster was a cheesy ass name, I thought the name was fitting. It’s what he was.

I saw these things as a child. Now that I am an older, seasoned viewer who knows how the business works, have watched countless shoot interviews, read several books, had my nose buried in dirt sheets until around 04, watched damn near every documentary imaginable, re-watched much of Austin’s career and heard the opinions of other wrestlers, it’s clear that he was legitimately as good as anyone who has ever worked. My personal opinions on him when I was a child have been validated time and again as an adult.

There’s a reason a guy like Bret Hart- a great among greats himself- handpicked Steve to work with him, and it wasn’t because he saw potential money from slanging tee shirts bearing his catch phrases.
Put it this way: if the prime of Steve Anderson the *wrestler* coincided with the prime of Stone Cold the character, the conversation of GOAT wouldn’t even be a debate, because he’d be the one guy among the Mt Rushmore of drawing power (Rock, Hogan, Austin, Bruno, and Steve arguably leads that pack in that department) who had in ring ability that rivaled the Mt Rushmore of Guys Who Can Go (HBK, Bret, Flair, Angle, Eddie, Hennig). The fact that the two halves of his career didn’t really coincide is the only real knock on him, though I will say it’s easy for someone who isn’t TRULY a mark for the business who didn’t watch week in and week out for 24 years to look at his years headlining as a big name brawler who sold merch at astounding rates and assume he was all style, no substance.

Really, the only guy really who scores near the top of the charts in all areas of the business and did so throughout his career at a high level is Savage. Cena does but he doesn’t, as he adapts to his opponents where as Savage was essentially the same guy in the ring regardless of who he faced.

That’s not to knock any of the guys that predated the Wrestlemania era, because the platform to be massive multimedia stars simply didn’t exist in any form approaching that of the Attitude Era heyday. The bottom line is that Austin’s actual wrestling ability earned high marks from pretty much everyone in the biz. If he wasn’t forced to alter his style due to some rather severe injuries the question of GOAT would be met with laughter, because it would be a stupid question at that point.

As it is, I argue Flair, HBK, and Savage for that slot, because they embodied a particular blend of drawing power, legacy, mic work, and workrate that has few rivals. The didn’t draw as big (Savage being the exception) and their personas weren’t nearly as marketable as the Big Three, but they could still put butts in seats while putting on incredible matches. Rock and Hogan drew for their overpowering personas, not their in-ring abilities. At the peak of his drawing power, Austin was in that same class, but the difference with him is that he at one time possessed exceptional wrestling ability.
For someone to use the crotchety old man barb that “we were watching while you were in diapers” as a reason not to include Austin, that’s a sure sign that while they watched, they certainly weren’t all that well educated in Austin’s career and possibly the finer points of professional wrestling as a whole.

I'd even go a little further and say that even after he was forced to change, Steve's brawling style was actually underrated. His in ring persona, mannerism, movements matched his out of ring persona *perfectly* and he could still tell a helluva story.

His feud with Bret I would call the best rivalry of all time - it was genius; Austin's early feud with McMahon; the Tyson skit; etc, all great but I really feel that as soon as he turned face after Mania 13, he was what Cena is constantly attacked for - he was Super Austin.

You could put him in a ring against 20 wrestlers and every single one of them would get stunned - he was unbeatable until he turned heel at Mania 17. He still had great matches with Rock, Taker, Foley, etc but did he ever really put anyone over? I guess he did with Jericho when he became the Undisputed champ, but anyone else?

in the WCW video games on N64 that looked absolutely devastating.

'm not even sure what it was and I can't find any video of it but I don't think it was the flatliner. Maybe it was totally made up for the game lmao.

I think it was pretty similar to what Brock Lesnar called the F5 (which, by the way, is hilariously soundtracked by "SexyBack" in this video I stumbled across trying to remember which wrestler from when I stopped watched was doing this move: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=posCXJw0no0).

heard 2K14 is actually better as the list of playable wrestlers isn't that great here without dlcs but still had a lot of fun with it with my sons. The create a wrestler was pretty damn cool, so we created our own and all 4 of us in a random royal rumble was great.

Later my 9 year old wanted to watch wrestling, so pulled up old youtube videos of matches I liked as a kid. I may actually get back into it with them, not sure if I like any of these new guys or not but might be some good family entertainment. I see Sting is up for the title match again next month, crazy dude has got to be up there in age and didn't know he was still at it.

from my time of youth and in no order:

Johnny Weaver - sound technical wrestler, and when he put the sleeper on ya, on the figure-four leg-lock... that was your ass!

Paul Jones - when he and Whahoo McDaniel were partnas, sheeeeeeeeittt.

Anderson Brothers - greatest hate stirers of a live crowd i witnessed. when it "looked like" they broke Rufus"Frieght-train"Jones' arm or leg (can't remember which) i remember my grandmother crying and the coliseum going bedlam with anger at them.

Johnny Valentine - i think so many wrestlers feared him. he had the technical skills and cleverness to fuck with you. Harley Race imo learned so much from him.

Harley Race - don't let them side-burns fool ya!

Mr. Wrestling No. 1 (Tim Woods)- before he broke his leg (if i remember correctly) many didn't fuck with him because of his technical superiority

Ric Flair - the great assimilator

Mil Mascaras - charisma and technics to spare

Bruno Samartino - the great one

Tiger Conway,Jr. - because my grandmother adored him
