"Nnamdi Asomugha waived by 49ers"

http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap2000000276651/article/nnamdi-asomugha-waived-by-san-francisco-49ers

The Nnamdi Asomugha experiment is over in San Francisco.

NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported Monday that the 49ers planned to waive the veteran cornerback to make room for the expected activation of fellow defensive back Eric Wright, per two sources informed of the impending move. The 49ers later made Asomugha's departure official and also added Wright to the 53-man roster.

Asomugha seized the third cornerback role in August, only to tumble down the depth chart behind talented nickel man Tramaine Brock and undrafted rookie Darryl Morris. The 32-year-old Asomugha has been a healthy scratch for much of the season while the team patiently waited for Wright, who's been practicing since Oct. 15 on the heels of an undisclosed injury.

Asomugha's play has been in swift decline since the four-time All-Pro inked a bloated free-agent deal with the Philadelphia Eagles before the 2011 season.

Wright -- who started the season on the active/non-football injury list -- isn't a major upgrade. He was a sheer disappointment with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers last season after a solid 2011 campaign with the Detroit Lions. Wright's first four years in the league were spent with the Cleveland Browns, who snagged him in the second round of the 2007 NFL Draft.

UPDATE: Some additional housekeeping: San Francisco, as expected, also activated wide receiver Mario Manningham on Monday. The veteran receiver is coming off last year's season-ending knee surgery and spent the early part of this campaign on the reserve/physically unable to perform list before returning to practice on Oct. 15.

That game he had against Houston made Nnamdi completely expendable.

It was a low risk signing, wish him the best. I'm sure he'll find his way onto television eventually.

The 4.11 wins-per-season the Raiders averaged during Nnamdi's Raider career when they had been a Super Bowl team a few months before they drafted him?

That sole magical season out of eight that he actually generated more than a single turnover in a year as a Raider on their 2-14 '06 squad?

How Nnamdi only played one side-of-the-field regardless of where the other team's best receiver was lined up weekly?

Signing him to the richest cornerback contract in history in 2009 then watching Oakland finish .500 for the first time in his career with Nnamdi named All-Pro despite Oakland having the league's 32nd-ranked-pass-defense in 2010?

Arguing that he was better than Revis or whoever else for 5-6 yeas while knowing damn well nobody was actually watching the Raiders play & thus were handicapped in arguing otherwise?

If you could point me in the direction of the awesome, that'd be awesome, thanks in advance.

Just like Lechler was great, but the teams as bad.

He'd shut down one side of the field and qbs wouldn't throw his way.

Him not shadowing other wrs was a coaching issue, and those happen on bad teams.

They debated whether he was the best cb, because he was that good. Definitely not an issue of nobody watching him play.

we sorta found a way to measure Lechler tho, who was pretty busy.

or they just didn't care because they were whooping y'all ass so badly they didn't need to bother.

actually, this was the case no matter who his coach was anywhere he went & since he had 5 or 6 in Oakland plus a couple more after, that might have been on him a bit.

Teams certainly didn't seem to improve upon his arrival or decline in his absence.

He was a tweener coming out of college, didn't start until his 3rd year, didn't really take off til the year after that, and was pretty much the only good player from the Raiders post Gruden draft bounties... the fact that he got to be a free agent disappointment and marry Kerry Washington was pretty much a win.

better resume is. Believe it or not there is an area between sucking and being a HOF'er.

All I'm saying is regardless of what happens from here on out, dude's had a solid career, he's not the first skill position player to have a swift drop off in his early 30's.

and we definitely don't give a fuck about him now.

He's yet another symbol of a rudderless ship during that time, the worst free agent bust since Haynesworth but unlike the Skins it's an anomaly rather than an organizational calling card.

We blew 25 million but never approached cap issues short or long term.

Besides, only a circus-clown organization/fan base would be sad & invested enough to make a cornerback the most important member of its football team.

even if you thought he was grossly overrated at his peak, to become un-rosterable at 32 is a shocking fall. maybe he stopped caring after robbing the Eagles.

although DTox made a good point when he entered free agency, saying that Asomugha playing in another system would either prove his eliteness or completely expose his non-versatility that was hidden by Oakland.

most games. which is one of the most difficult tasks in football, regardless of position. that said, the Raiders were routinely among the worst run defenses in the league during his time there, and with him never leaving the short side of the field, it was just easier to flip your best receiver away from his coverage.

with his style of play, losing a step was probably a much bigger deal than for other corners. at his prime he used his long arms to stop routes before they started, and could stay in stride without safety help. but he was always too stiff to play the slot, and seeing receivers pull away from him on deep balls was the death toll -- he can't play off-coverage.

Rather, he always played the RCB position unless facing a lefty. Basically, he was always on the QB's blindside. It's quite puzzling that for a guy considered to be elite and the best (by some)in the game that he never shifted sides of the field or attempted to play the slot. All teams had to do to adjust was put their best WR's to Nnamdi's opposite side or in the slot since he never moved. That's why it's hard for me not to view his dominance in Oakland with a lot of skepticism.

him play over the past 2-3 seasons. He was an embarrassment in Philly. By my account he had one great game (when he shut down Megatron) and about 30 piss poor performances.

He had horrible ball skills and was completely unable to generate turnovers. Despite having a big frame for a CB, he wasn't physical at all. He routinely got engulfed by WRs/blockers and gave some of the most half-hearted attempts at tackling I have ever seen. Every time he got burnt the first thing he did is point his finger and look for the closest safety to blame.

It's extremely hard to fathom how he was so dominant in Oakland all those years and then just shit the bed the moment he hit free agency. Personally, I think he just checked out of the game.

Off the field, he's a first class guy so I wish him well. But, it's hard for me to respect him as a player given how pathetic he was in green. And with him being cut, he didn't play for one single winning team in his career.

I know Megatron got his yards, but they mostly came against the safeties or on another DB (DRC). For most the game, Nnamdi was covering Megatron straight up and doing a damn good job of it. Unfortunately, there are no stats I can really use to back my point. I just remember that Nnamdi did a solid job when covering Megatron.

But, that was maybe one of 2 times that Nnamdi ever impressed me as an Eagle.

play on the ball or trying to make a tackle that it has to have tarnished his image and legacy quite a bit. Especially since his ineptitude was on full display for a national audience in Philly.

Still, at the end of the day, he had a highly accomplished career all things considered. Made several pro-bowls, earned tons of $, and survived a decade in the NFL. It's just hard to fathom that a guy of his notoriety only produced 17 turnovers (15 ints) in his entire career.

Noticed I said teams since Vick has led/played on multiple winning teams in his career while Nnamdi never finished a season in his career on a winning team.

Unlike Nnamdi, Vick came in as a cheap free agent signing and played above anyone's expectations of him.

As I made it abundantly clear, I have nothing on Nnamdi the person. By all accounts he seems like a first class, highly respectable and charitable man. See, I'm able to separate the person from the player. Stop letting your crush of Nnamdi cloud your judgement, sissy.

I wouldn't even try out for another team if I'm him, just go straight to TV from here.

He's got the name, handsome, well spoken, Los Angeles roots, good media connects on multiple fronts, solid personal reputation, Berkley education, lots of philanthropically-centered work, Kerry Washington, etc.

If he went into broadcasting I'd expect him to be a bigger success than Eric Allen in the field even though he wasn't as good as Eric Allen during their respective times on the field.

better than Nnamdi as a player.

Eric Allen is one of the few humble, intelligent, and insightful football analysts on ESPN. IMO, he's one of the best former pro-turned analysts out there.

I do think Nnamdi can/will transition well to the media/tv though. Clearly, he will be successful at whatever path he chooses.

reign to question other's posters manhood, call others 'fags', make personal insults for no damn reason, and basically say whatever w/o being called out on it. Yet, let the poster above make one sexist remark (in response to someone who's made numerous remarks of the same nature) and it causes an uproar.

I mean, I really don't give a shit, but I just wanted to point out the hypocrisy of some posters (as you guys alluded to).

getting up in arms over it however, would be sad.

The fact that the best thing anyone can say about a NFL player on a sports message board regarding the past four years of his now-just-completed career is that he wifed a beautiful actress sorta shows where we're at with this subject.

that's why it ended less than a year later with her cheating & him beating.

Old Blue Eyes was parting those thighs & trying to teach his fellow paisano why the lady is a tramp.

Duh Jankee Simper continued to cough up cash twice a week on floral arrangements for her headstone for the rest of his lonely ass life while Frankie Baby sipped scotch in Vegas with the crew, laughing it up and singing http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m2alx1XMNS1qkoqys.gif

I swear there was a time when the only people that cared about this guy were the 10 or so AFC West fans on this board (half of us Raider fans). And then CB Warz, and then he signs with Philly, and then he marries a queen, all while falling off... BOOM.

But I really hoped he would prove he was better in Philly. Every game was almost painful to watch, especially that one game where he had those penalties called against him.

I do find it semi-amusing that Revis is 0-8 in Tampa right now though when that was one of the big strikes against Nnamdi.
