Mcnaab was always guarded and uneasy about his public image. AI not so much. He didn't know any better, and never seem to care much. His people were reckless and he lived like at 19yr old even up until the end. He was what he was. Doesn't mean he was any "realer" than Mcnaab.
It just played better in this city at that time. Would be a fascinating study if someone ever wrote a book about it.

because he didn't play the media game he stepped over a ton of bs several times and never really had any sound bites worthy of replay which is damn near hard to do as a QB in the miserable caldron of fail and nit picking that is Philly.
He doesn't do good commentary but he mastered the art of saying and giving nothing to an antagonistic media.

spent more time singing his praises on OKP, copping pleas, supporting him with my dollars, being down for his cause long before O_Dawg or Cowboy fans co-opted him once he was washed-up for agenda purposes or you started throwing tantrums as if admitting he was done & it was time to move on was somehow an insult to his character.

However I was never a McNabb fan due to him being 'well spoken' or 'articulate' or 'charismatic' or any of that other dumb shit which honestly he never really was.
As someone who's met him on a couple of occasions, dude was just kind of a tool from a personality perspective.
His brother Sam who I knew from back in our shared awful days in insurance-certifying class, was a little bit cooler but that's probably because he grew up being the one his parents didn't coddle or seem to care nearly as much about.
No, my reasons for being a McNabb fan were the old fashioned kind: me being a fan of the Eagles and him being probably a Top 3 QB for the first half of decade from 00-05, later hoping/wishing that McNabb might return to that level for a few years after that but it never really happening.
And as for him never having a 'whoops' moment in terms of quotes you must be joking, he & his stage parents had plenty of moments in the press where due to the double-talk something was made out of what should have been nothing: I didn't know there was such thing as ties, it being 'bittersweet' watching the Eagles win without him, The Book Of Donovan/Easter Resurrection, whatever happened in the past hopefully it's over, every body makes mistakes, the big game is the conference championship, etc.
By trying to give gobbledygook non-answers, he often just got gacked up that gook on himself for no reason at all.
The media was far more antagonistic to an Allen Iverson than a Donovan McNabb & while 'practice' is a classic quote/rant to re-loop, those who know/remember the context of that moment recall what it was actually about at the time.
I won't even go into how terrible McNabb's performance as a media member has been because I don't really care but that Syracuse Broadcasting School training doesn't really appear to be paying off there.
Dude got you 4 NFC title appearances and a chance for a Super Bowl, and yet you (as well as some other Philly heads) continue to shit on him...that's why a lot of cats look at some Philly fans sideways
