"October GD post: Pumpkin spiced drinks edition"
Mon Oct-07-13 05:01 PM by josephmurf2384

I figure half the conversation in hear will be regarding pumpkin infused Booze and what not. Seriously though not really big on halloween. Friends want to go the whole nine and shit and my response is "my costume will be the guy with the whiskey in one hand and beer in the other". Pretty much over the whole halloween thing. I'm 30 and single i don't need an excuse to drink wrecklessly and act a fool.

Officially the branch manager for our office now. First time i have really put my name on the line. Fingerprinted probably like 15 times, background checks, had to recount all of my history the last 10 years, but it finally paid off. See the first check next week. Have to decide after the year is over whether i wanna go out on my own or stick with the company.

Just booked a flight to NOLA for a weekend in November and am excited to see some friends down there.

Anyone cop the new Delton 3030. I dug it. A bit on the repetitive side, but can't wait to see him in Philly on Sunday with and orchestra. Besides that listening to the newest Tanya Morga, Foreign Exchange and Oddissee.

Was Gravity really worth seeing? i just don't get how it could be enjoyable.

Just ordered two bottles of Jameson's rarest vintage, never special order from VA ABC they straight jerked me around forever until they told me they could not get a bottle. Traveling back up to Philly later this month to surprise my brother with a bottle, 10 12 packs of fat tire and 3,000 chuck-e-cheese ball pit balls so he can fil the pit in his apartment. This is gonna be a good month. Things are looking up Murf.

How y'all doing OKSports, anything new and exciting popping in your lives.

I've always been into legal shows and wanted to be a lawyer as a child but the schooling scared me off. I used to spend a lot of time in court for work so sometimes when I had time, I'd check the case docket and sit in a courtroom for a couple of hours. I also used to use my lunchbreak sitting through the Isiah Thomas sexual harassment trial lol.

I was the only one disappointed when we got dismissed smh.

Even if i didn't have that particular interest though, if I was ever before a jury, I'd want them to 'want to be there tho' so I'd still have a positive attitude about it.

i don't have sympathy for people either. its once every 8 years here in ny and you have an option to postpone it and pick the date you want to come back within 6 months.

4. "My improv troupe got into another festival in NY"
In response to Reply # 0

2nd one this year we've been accepted to which is pretty good being in an area that isn't known as a spot for improv comedy.

Got to perform at the UCB mainstage theater in June which is pretty much one of the 2 meccas for improv. This one is in Rochester but still nice to get to travel and do the show.

1 Year anniversary show coming up first week of November too which is pretty rare for an independent troupe to perform regularly (usually monthly, but had a weekly run for a few months until we burned out) for a year.

Exciting stuff

If you like spectacle, there's no reason not to see Gravity in 3D on the biggest screen imaginable. It's a lot of fun.

In response to Reply # 0

We came into the season with a strong 1-2, but not so strong that those two would be enough to win us much. There've been a collection of small steps forward with our 3 and 4 runners, who've closed the gap nicely at different times. But we haven't really had them all do it together in one meet. Still some time, but if we can get all four of them to show up and run well at the same meet then our mishmash from 5-7 doesn't really matter that much.

Relatedly, I've been slightly annoyed by the amount of additional races in HS cross country meets lately. When I was in HS, there'd be a JV race and a Varsity race. In college, except for the really big invitationals, we'd just kind of throw everybody on the same line and score the top five (well, seven sort of) at the end. I'd much rather do that. But lately, we've seen a JV race, a varsity race, a freshman race, and a sophomore race, etc. Cross country is supposed to be chaotic. This new trend is, therefore, dumb.

Boys started and two minutes later, girls started. I got passed by a girl once and it was rather humiliating. She was a state champ, though.

And if it's so important to all these other coaches to have freshman and sophomore and varsity and JV results available, then we can tease those out in the results. No need for separate races.

There's no need to make it complicated. Runners who aren't fast enough to score still get to race. And unlike other sports, where varsity is a hard and fast line, if you run fast enough to score than that's that.

Whatever. It's aggravating because these two hour meets are becoming four hour meets for no particularly good reason. I'm pretty sure it's not really helping runners either. For me, making the leap from "awful" to "useful" was largely a cognitive one. I literally didn't know that I wasn't fast until Sharif Karie (a 4:01 HS miler in Virginia in the 90s) blew me (and everybody else, in fairness) off the track in a DMR 1200m leg. It was eye opening.

Getting your ass kicked is valuable.

Most importantly, wifey and I have decided to get back together. Like I said when I gave the last update, we've been talking a bunch. There have been major changes in both of our personalities, and we're communicating so much more openly than we were about a year and a half ago.

So the bad news, NYC OKPs, is I'm heading back down to DC in a couple of weeks. But I'll be back to visit.

What else is going on?

Might have a solo show at culturefix in February. I'm in good with the partners there and they dig my photography, so we'll see how it goes over. Should find out for sure later this week.

But I'm also comfortable with streetscapes and landscapes.

As part of what I'm talking about wrt changes in our personalities, wifey used to be the real jealous type (ironic, as it turns out), but now she's okay with me having these shoots. This last year has been quite a trip, and it's really weird to think that at this time last year I was starting to look for places in NYC.

i need an 86% to pass the certification test and I consistently get between 80%-85% on the practice tests smh, although my instructors are idiots so at least 1 question on every test is a bad test question...for example...

If a True/False question is “Arm and leg compression sleeves shall be white, black, beige or a single solid color, is this correct?”

And the answer is Arm and leg compression sleeves have to be white, black, beige or a single solid school color..

Is that true or false?

In response to Reply # 0

Thanks to Bomb, MadDago, jerseytornado, and temps who all gave great suggestions for my trip there. There was no way I could hit everything suggested (I really tried to reserve a table at Jacques-Imo's for instance but it was already filled up) but definitely hit up Frenchman St., Yo Momma's Grill, and Johnny's from the suggestions, all fucking great. Had a really nice dinner on Frenchman St. at a spot called Three Muses, which had sort of a Silverlake/DTLA sorta vibe (and a similar sort of crowd) before we hit DBA. I drank my face off the whole time, my gambler friends enjoyed blowing their afternoon at the Harrah's, and my married friends enjoyed the copious amount of strip clubs far away from their wives.

I'd definitely do NOLA again, great town, though I don't think I'd list it at the top of "relaxing vacation spots" (I'd probably need a reason to go there, but there always seems to be enough events going on there that I'd find a reason to go), and I think next time I'll rent a car so I can explore more spots further out.

Also, my coworker quitting my job (cause the system we worked on will eventually be phased out... 6 years from now) got me a raise that puts me right close to 6 figures. Things have been pretty good here, though I'd like to take the rest of the year to take it relatively easy after really blowing it out in September.

Barley Swine -- modernist small plates with interesting ingredient twists. amazing service. a very tight space that used to be walk-in only, but they've started taking reservations. the six bar seats overlooking the kitchen are the best.

Uchi or Uchiko -- same owner and lots of overlapping menu choices, so take your pick. contemporary Japanese. plated dishes are much better than the sushi. all the desserts are worth ordering (and I rarely get dessert). super popular.

Franklin Barbecue -- I'd really shoot for Friday if you can, because Saturday is probably the longest wait. and don't waste that beautiful meat by ordering a sandwich.

la Barbecue, John Mueller Meat Co. and Micklethwait Craft Meats - you kinda have to go to Franklin if you've never been, but these should all be worth trying on Saturday or Sunday. definitely get a beef rib at la or Mueller's; I love fatty brisket but think a perfectly cooked beef rib is even better. Micklethwait for sausages.

Houndstooth - not sure if you like coffee but Austin has a lot of it. this was my favorite (and right next door to Uchiko).

being from California, the tacos and Tex-Mex in Austin can be skipped over.

In response to Reply # 26

Almost didn't make it out after a long Thursday night of drinking on 6th street (which was a lot quieter than usual I'm told due to a lot of folk going up to Dallas for the red river shootout)but a friend of a friend got himself into line at 9:30 and then we joined up a little later

It was a helluva wait because they were training new people + the computer's went down for awhile. Got there at 9:30 and ate at 1:30....but MY GOD WAS THAT SOME RIDICULOUS BRISKET. Oh my lord, that first bite is unlike anything I've ever had. Just indescribable. Had a half pound of brisket each and got some turkey but the latter just didn't have much taste to it. To finish it all off, had their bourbon banana cream pie and that too was simply delicious.

ACL pretty much took all of the time on Friday afternoon and all of Saturday...and then the heavens opened up for a torrential downpour which lasted all night, resulting in the cancellation of ACL for sunday. Not the worst deal because we are getting that day refunded and those funds went toward covering a lot of the alcohol + food costs lol...and I was able to check out dt Austin on Sunday, without having to rush. Watched football and then dinner at Moonshine Patio and Grill on Red River and 2nd st based off yelp reviews....very very good food, had my first taste of moonshine as well.

The highlight of the trip was Sunday night though...a lot of the canceled bands from Sunday were already in town so they quickly setup shows at local spots. My friends know the Mowglis from high school so we were able to get in VIP(felt terrible for the people actually waiting...something like only 30/200 got in) and as is usually the case in an intimate setting like Lambert's, the show was so much fun. Small pool, Group Love did a small set, Walk the Moon lead singer came on to sing 'Enchilada', and then the Mowglis closed it out....ridiculous energy and vibe.

In general, I gotta say that I fell in love with Austin. The setting, the people, the energy....could definitely see myself there for a few years after school. Need some time to experience all of the food.

That new Deltron is slowly growing on me but I'm sure they're gonna kill it live. Picked up my ticket earlier this week.

Seattle has a ton of good shows this fall I'm seeing. Saw Dave Chappelle last Friday, Kandrick opens their tour next Saturday followed by Pete Rock & CL Smooth soon after. Still on the fence for Gift of Gab, Janelle Monae, & Earl Sweatshirt too.

She drew that freehand. Each day of the month has a fall activity on it, from making pumpkin bread to going apple picking, etc.

She's been crafty as fuck lately, and I'm enjoying the benefits.

Punk'n by Uinta Brewing. Love the flavors here. Nice and spicey

Small Patch Pumpkin Ale by Tommyknocker Brewery. Hard to find in the Atlanta area. I had last years batch and want more. Beer-trade from Colorado on the way...."can't wait!"

this year. that said, i fucks with gin. gin + st germain + club soda is awesome in the summer. gin + mint + lemonade similarly.

not that many great fall/winter drinks i can list with gin--for me, it's a spring/summer staple though. went through a bottle of hendricks (good) and a bottle of millers (great. a bit more floral and flavorful than hendricks. def. on the sweet side of gins). i have a bottle of barr hill in reserve for my next bottle (friends bought it for me. I'm curious about it)

I honestly don't think it tastes like pine which is what everyone says. Maybe I have different taste buds.

I usually stick with gin & tonics, but gin + ginger ale or sprite/sierra mist is solid too.

unfortunately most bartenders today don't understand the concept of what a "splash" actually is and you have to coach them.

my wife's sister's boyfriend brought us some moonshine aplie pie whiskey. it's awful. i didn't know what to do with it. made a sour with it (real sours--lemon, simple syrup, egg white + booze), and holy fuck, it's amazing. add a touch of scotch. wow.

In response to Reply # 132

most everything is, by that definition, a "flavored vodka." white whiskey, for example, is just a less distilled grain spirit.

vodka, as we know it, is distilled as much as possible so that it is, in effect, a neutral spirit--water + ethanol and as little else as possible. flavors get added post distillation (thought Hanger one redistills because it uses whole fruit, apparently). That's why vodka can be made from anything--you're trying to take out all the flavor.

Gin, traditionally, was distilled from a mash and then redistilled with juniper and other things added to give a particular flavor. Now, mass produced gins are made like a vodka but with flavor added. that's true. but a true gin--a distilled gin or a london gin, has the juniper and other botanicals in the redistilling process. Because the juniper is so strong, gin's base grain is generally unimportant (as opposed to rum or tequila or whiskey, where the base grain is a key to the flavor profile).

basically, if the flavor is added after distillation is complete, it's just infusing a vodka/neutral spirit. if, however, the flavor is added before or during distillation, it's not a neutral spirt/it's different from vodka.

What does your "empathy" matter to a person thousands of miles away that doesn't know or care who you are?

i guess i should say for the record that i'm agnostic, and don't particularly care what religion or philosophy gets other people through the day as long as it doesn't hurt anyone. whatever works for you is fine by me. but the idea that there's a significant difference between "prayers" and "positive vibes" is beyond absurd. if there is a god who listens to prayers, i'm sure he's not like "HA! you atheists want nice things to happen? joke's on you, i'm not even listening. go fuck yourselves!"

The difference is prayer is based on a belief in GOD, if you don't believe in anything what are you "vibing" for? Is it magic? Witchcraft?

see, I want to tell you that you're taking this "vibes" thing too seriously, that it's really just a phrase, and not even one that's specific to atheists (as far as I know), but you look like you already have your mind made up so I'll just say "sure" to both of those questions and get back to watching this game. have a good night, truth. hopefully my team will be seeing yours in the WS*. sending some vibey stuff your way (CAN U FEEL THA TELAPATHIK WAAVEZ???).

all-knowing, omnipotent God that performs miracles so we really don't have to explain our shit.

You non-believers have to EXPLAIN your shit. Like exactly how do these "positive vibes" work? Where is the mathematical and scientific data? where are the advanced stats and analytics?

I have more respect for a full blown atheist that doesn't believe in anything at all as opposed to a somebody that only believes in something when it's convenient for them.

can't be proven, the whole Adam and Eve thing doesn't really jive with the whole theory of evolution and all that jazz plus there's that crazy Jesus guy and all his foolishness.

You guys only believe in stuff that can be proved. Until you don't. I'm just trying to find out why.

very little sense, and because there's really no reason to waste brainpower/time on religion/worship.

The notion of worshipping something is really weird and perverted, actually. So is the idea of believing in a supernatural evil force that's always trying to deceive you.

That's kind of weird, if you knew a ton of people were misguided and likely going to hell, you would think a decent person would care about those people! Some of your friends might burn in eternal hellfire and be poked with pitchforks.

about someone else's god. That's why so many Christians always try to push Christianity on other people. They're doing what they're supposed to do, according to their religion. If you don't, you're being a half-ass Christian and don't care about peoples' salvation.

Keep up.

I asked for more specific, and I got a manifesto.

>all-knowing, omnipotent God that performs miracles so we
>really don't have to explain our shit.

>scientific data? where are the advanced stats and analytics?

Well, I haven't posted anything about vibes, and I don't want to speak for anyone who has. But if I had to take a guess, I'd say that you're being weird. It's an expression, man.

>I have more respect for a full blown atheist

I am. Anti-theist, in fact. Or radical humanist.

>believe in anything at all

That's nihilism.

>as opposed to a somebody that only
>believes in something when it's convenient for them.

Who does that?

Guess he's still workin out the kinks cause the show in Canada got postponed @ the last minute

The Seattle show started & ran real late which seemed to cut Kendrick's set real short

Once he finally came on stage (after way to long an intermission) it was a series of mask changing sessions on some MF GLOOM hip hopera shit

I wanted to hear more of the classics which apparently didn't get played til the encore. We were already out the door before it even got to that point.

You'll probably enjoy it a lot more if you liked his last album

I liked the show, personally. If you didn't like Yeezus then of course this would have been a hard show to sit through. It certainly needed more energy to it - and felt like Kanye was just going through the motions on Stronger and some of the older stuff, but overall I thought it was a pretty well done show. The sound at Staples is fucking terrible and so I could hardly understand Kendrick, but he was pretty great overall.

Unjustly cancelled. And better than "Happy Endings" which was also unjustly cancelled but seems to have hogged all the available "please save our show" vibes/prayers last Spring.

I'd editing a chapter, doing some day-drinking, and watching this delightful program. The last two are making the first one not a slow torture.

I only caught one episode and thought it was decent, but it suffered from the too-long-of-a-name syndrome.

I can't think of a single show that was successful with a title longer than five words.

It was a hell of a weekend. 4AM friday, 3AM Saturday and 6AM Sunday. It was one hell of a party. had a great time with some great people. Sad to see it go but we all have been expecting it for a while just not expecting it to happen with such short notice. No more late night dice, free yellow beer and late night smoking or regular night smoking by the lake. Also sucks because the spot will most likely become something horrible. Small business dying sucks.

i'm not whining about new music, but it's been a lazy year for me as far as music goes.

i'll make a point to check some of these out.

i still blame hip-hop.

I'd hazard to say that my backpack straps are as tight as/tighter than anyone's on here, but hip-hop is diverse enough that even if you absolutely hate the mainstream or the underground or whatever, there's bound to be at least few albums that should be up your alley.

And I think I've heard like 90% of that list. Thanks for reminding me about the other stuff I need to check out.

To that list, I'd also add:

Armand Hammer - Race Music
Devin the Dude - One For the Road
Cory Mo - Take It or Leave It
Sean Born & Dunc - Organic EP
Uptown XO - Colour De Grey

1.9 seconds left, down by 1. Inbounding from beneath our own basket after a timeout. I got squared up on the low block on the other end. My boy Isaac (he's rzaroch36 on here) threw a baseball pass the full length of the court. I Mossed the 2 guys on me for the ball, turn toward the sideline, fadeway kiss off the glass for the win. Nevermind that we went 3-9 on the season, or that I missed several easy 5 footers in the fourth quarter. Still good for a lil' buzzer beater mob celebration.
