Is he, as Simmons says, the most overrated superstar of his era? I think Yao needs to be the number 1 or 2 option to be effective, but I don't think you can win with Yao touching the ball that much in today's NBA.

when he was coming in i said his build and size would limit his minutes and probably cause physical problems, and his level of production would be similar to smits'.
that said, yao was a stronger player than smits. you could run the offense through him. he could dominate for stretches. he was a much more dynamic player with a higher top end than smits was IMO, and i really liked the dunkin dutchman.

healthy.
-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

He was probably the most skilled true center of his era, but his style of play isn't conducive to winning in today's league. He was a plodding, lane-clogging center who had to be featured in the offese to make an impact, and he wasn't a great defender.

I recall being at Staples for a Clippers game versus the Rockets & being amazed.
Always thought he was kind of a skinny big man legs were like tree-trunks, he had an array of moves, could seemingly get a good shot anytime he wanted it plus was posting up every time down the floor but the Rockets seemed to want to settle for jumpers a lot & often not even feeding the post for a set-up before doing so.
I just remember thinking 'that guy looks like he could score anytime he wants' with Chris Kaman guarding him & maybe them occasionally sending help.
Shaq would have slapped the shit out of somebody on his team by that point.

something about him being bottom heavy.
i saw him live a couple times and like you i was impressed. he wasnt just a big ass freak chewing up space like, say, shawn bradley. very poised player.

thing or what but I don't think he every really embraced that strong alpha dog mentality that all the great players have.

that whole passive asian thing followed him for longer than it should have. he was getting more aggressive and understanding his role better, but then he started losing steam physically.

>Seems like he gets a lot more respect than I remember he got >during his playing career.
I mean, once he got paired up with T-Mac, everyone knew how good he was. Even before that, really. But if you're talking about his first two years, of course...he was hyped as the next Shaq, there was all the All Star bids (some of which were definitely not earned), etc.
But after year 1, he was essentially at his career averages - nearly 20/10/2...everyone knew he was good.

imo he was everything ralph sampson's pro career wasn't. yao had have had the ball to him more often and played to his strengths he would have been even better imo.

Dude had all the offensive repertoires & was borderline unguardable because of the things he was able to do at his size but he passive & was an average defender at best.
