"lol.....Jadeveon Clowney: SEC QBs are scared of me......"
Wed Jul-17-13 11:06 PM by guru0509

now *that* is swag, because we all know its true.

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/ncaaf--jadeveon-clowney-fear-in-tajh-boyd-aaron-murray-eyes-010524060.html

HOOVER, Ala. – Who's afraid of Jadeveon Clowney?
The South Carolina pass rushing fiend, who could become the first defense-only player in NCAA history to win the Heisman Trophy, named names here on Tuesday.

Surrounded by dozens of reporters at SEC Media Days, Clowney said he saw fear in the eyes of three quarterbacks last season: Clemson's Tajh Boyd, Georgia's Aaron Murray, and Arkansas' Tyler Wilson.
He mentioned Boyd first and foremost: "He is scared every time we play them," Clowney said of his in-state rival. "I know he's listening right now but I'm telling the truth."

A few minutes later, Clowney was asked to elaborate. He didn't backtrack – at all. "You can tell if a player is scared if he looks at me every time before the ball is snapped," he said. Clowney had four-and-a-half sacks against Clemson in their game last season.
He went on, saying Boyd "was shook," and that he told his teammates, "We got him."

The comments reached Clemson coach Dabo Swinney within minutes. "I don't think Tajh Boyd is scared of anybody," Swinney told reporters at his media golf outing in South Carolina.

Clowney then volunteered that Murray also had that look of fear, saying he was "sliding a lot."

It's hard not to be scared of Clowney. He said every single quarterback he faced in high school was scared, which is unsurprising if you watch his sophomore year highlights. In the Gamecocks' Outback Bowl win over Michigan, Clowney delivered one of the most brutal tackles in the history of the sport, launching himself into Michigan running back Vincent Smith with such force that Smith's helmet came flying off.

Football players expect to be hit, but nobody expects to be hit quite like that. On Tuesday, Clowney said he wants to talk to Smith and ask him how he's feeling. (He didn't mean it in a mocking manner, and by the way, Smith is doing fine.)

There may be even more hits like that this season. Clowney's coach, Steve Spurrier, informed reporters today that his star rusher ran a 4.46 in the 40 this off-season and is even lighter after weight training. (He's 268 pounds.) Then Spurrier was asked to compare Clowney to former Florida defensive end Jevon "The Freak" Kearse, who was one of the most feared hitters of his era. Spurrier said Clowney is "a little bit thicker" but there are "a lot of similarities." (Kearse was also around 265 lbs., and ran a 4.58 in the 40.

That was and is considered incredibly quick for a man that size.) Clowney may have gone No. 1 overall had he been allowed to enter the NFL draft this year. He will likely be the top pick in 2014, unless the league's worst team needs a quarterback like Louisville's Teddy Bridgewater.

SEC Media Days are always about hype, but it's not too much to place Clowney at the front of the line for the Heisman race going into the season. A defender has to have an inordinate amount of attention to win that award without ever touching the ball (unless of course he strips it or intercepts it), but the mob of media around Clowney here shows the attention is already his. He will be double-teamed on every play, and he says Michigan players were pulling at his hair in the bowl game, but he's strong enough, fast enough, and savvy enough to disrupt everything in his path.

"It takes a lot of effort to stop him with that strength," said Gators center Jon Halapio. Florida coach Will Muschamp might have had the line of the day Tuesday when he said he wanted Clowney to turn pro before his Gators had to face him this season.

The Heisman race began here Tuesday even before the defending Heisman champ showed up. Clowney will be the most-watched defensive player in college football this season. He will have millions of eyes on him. But if he's right in what he's saying about his opponents, he's already had plenty of eyes on him from across the line of scrimmage.

then again, so was Vernon Gholston...

but Clowney displays much more technique and football instincts than Big Vern who's only move was spin and swim on *every* single snap

Don't rule it out

In response to Reply # 24

the LG is face-up with a DT at the snap, and would have to wait for Lewan to clear his left before he could even look at Clowney (which would be bad play design). I first thought it was the RG's fault, as he appears to be pulling towards Clowney to make a trap block, but again, that's just insanely dumb play-calling if you think you can trap Clowney with a backside guard.

Lewan is clearly going for the backside OLB at the snap, but so is the tight end...being that Lewan is closer, I think the TE was supposed to get Clowney. and then the RG would've pulled through the hole to kick-out the unblocked play-side OLB.

A player like Clowney can get stuffed 60 out of 63 plays, but the 3 missed blocks will probably lead to sacks or tackles for loss(wind up on SC).

I do give props to Coach Spurrier for landing the top in-state talent in South Carolina the last 5+ years.

COLUMBIA, S.C. -- A defensive end wasn't going to win the Heisman anyway.

Not Thursday in the first game of the season and certainly not with a stomach virus. That's as close as it came to an excuse for South Carolina's Jadeveon Clowney on a night when a lot could be questioned in the debut of his Heisman quest.

His conditioning, his effort, his future.

But there it was in the postgame interview room following South Carolina's 27-10 win over North Carolina. Following a 1 hour, 44-minute weather delay, after facing North Carolina's ultra up-tempo offense, 5½ hours after the game began, Clowney finally relented.

“The night before I had a stomach virus,” he said. “All night long, to this morning. I didn't want to talk about that.”

He certainly didn't want to talk about his pregame meal of “a banana and a couple of grapes.” That sounds too much like that excuse but it does begin to explain a lot on a night when the 6-foot-6, 274-pound freak was equal parts dogging it, lollygagging and -- during brief flashes – brilliant.

Devin Taylor was a mediocre stiff on the other side (Chaz Sutton is better) and he put up 13.5 sacks in the season after Melvin Ingram left.

Clowney's presence alone makes everyone better (UNC was still using 2-3 defenders on him on passing downs, whether he tried or not) but the effort issue is a real concern. more so the fact his coaches seem to encourage "Clowney Rules" that differ from everyone else.

when the Eagles draft (doubtful but who knows) the one area we won't be drafting is defensive end.

Which is our only area on that side of the football where we have depth combined with the fact that we're already in the process of converting to a 3-4 while Chip Kelly already pump-faked the league this April & got Miami to trade up for Dion Jordan so we could land our right tackle for the next decade in Lane Johnson.

the fatigue was disappointing, but I'll buy his stomach virus excuse this time. although South Carolina coaches giving him free reign to slack off IN PRACTICE could create scary entitlement issues. that's an issue -- having the coaches under your thumb since 12 years old probably won't improve when you get millions of dollars and are the most talented player on a bad NFL team next season.

still, even at half-speed he could stun James Hurst with a single punch whenever he wanted. UNC slid all their protection his way too. yeah, Randy Moss might jog a route, but he's still drawing a corner and deep safety 20 yards away from everyone else.

I also think the negative attention comes from people actually watching a defensive linemen for an entire game. it's rarely flashy, and getting a pressure or holding a run gap doesn't get the general viewer excited.

to go all out 100% every snap, that's why its become pretty common to rotate d-lines almost like hockey lines these days...

when dude ripped Gurley's helmet off & gave them a 15-yarder plus fresh set of downs inside the Gamecocks' 20 in the second quarter.

What's funny is Gurley got to the edge out of that scrum & looked like he was gonna take it to the house without a hat on if they didn't whistle the play dead.

That kid is a beast.

of a deal? It was a great play, but it's greatness was more about the situation as far as the blown call against SC on the play before, and the way it looked with the helmet popping off. But Clowney was completely unblocked because of a blown assignment. Yes his speed on it was crazy, and him picking up the ball after the hit made it that much more vicious. But that hit being shown all summer actually had people gassed into talking about a Heisman?

"Steals" are either super athletically gifted guys who
went to small schools/got injured/were ignored (TO, Curtis
Martin, Cruz) or guys who aren't that gifted but have super
duper determination + drive (Tom Brady, Walter Payton, Zach
Thomas, James Harrison).

Almost no college football players who don't work hard or
don't care end up good, because you can't teach being nasty
and wanting to play football. That is what makes the sport
great. You must give a shit to be great.

Jadaveon gets discouraged, takes entire drives off, and
doesn't punish people at all given his athleticism. His
coaches already don't like the dude. He's only good up to
this point because he's been more gifted.

That is Tony Mandarich and Courtney Brown. Super athletes
who were tossing people, horrible at dealing with adversity,
and didn't give a shit.

Clown is a 2-down pass rusher, with a Hugh Douglass/John Abraham
maximum (a huge compliment, btw).

Maybe not considered the best player in the country but was considered the best LB at one time

DE never gave a shit about accountability and the rest is history

I don't watch Bengal games so I don't know how he his doing in the league.

atkins is probably still the bengals best defensive player
but burfict is probably a top 10 LB, maybe top 3 if you account for value and age/potential

was due to his extremely slow 40 time. I think he ran in the 5.0-5.2 range. There were serious questions regarding his speed and how he would be able to adjust to the faster level of play in the NFL. Sure, there were definitely red flags regarding his behavior/discipline both on and off the field. His stock plummeted as he played very undisciplined and out of control throughout his last season. But again, the biggest concern was his athleticism.

With Clowney, there will be no questions or red flags regarding his athletic ability. He's got the prototypical size (provided he can pack on an additional 15-20 pounds of muscle) and athleticism that NFL scouts/coaches covet. The question will obviously be: how committed is he to the game of football? I'm not going to draw conclusions just yet, but this season has obviously been very underwhelming for him so far. At this point, people are just more enamored with his potential than his actual production.

He's essentially only good at being big, strong and
fast

Just google a video of N. Suh at Nebraska for an example
of a what a nasty defensive lineman plays like
