receives due critisim. He retorted "Dwight quit" with Kobe quitting vs the Suns. I'm surprised ESPN didn't cut it off at the sheer mention. He said people are taking PAYCUTS to play with Lebron and Dwight left money on the table to leave Kobe. He accused Kobe of not wanting Phil back (idk about that).

Couple other shots I'm leaving out.

He started out with "who wants to play with Kobe?" Stephen A said something about blasphemy and Nelly said "that's the problem" and I caught the holy ghost.

Jamison took a pay cut just last year to come here, Metta wanted to help Kobe so bad he approached him in the shower after game 6 in Boston to express that desire, then signed with us 1 year later. Fisher took a paycut to stay in LA instead of joining the big 3 in Miami because he was loyal to Kobe. Steve Blake had like 6 teams after him in 2010 and he took a paycut to come here. Barnes took a paycut to come here. Lamar could have taken a paycut to go back to Miami, instead he stayed in LA.

players, which is fine, didn't stop us from becoming the winningest franchise in recent memory, but the guys I named are examples of players who have taken pay-cuts to play with Kobe, all role players like Ray Allen has become now at the tail end of his career. in Jamison's case he took a $10 million pay cut.

Oh there are stars on the roster? Fine. That's legit discourse in terms of last season. That's not what he's responding to or about though, and you know it.

The financial breakdown of how those two options played out has been done a thousand times, and LA had a thin edge when it was all said and done.

If the entire financial and personel makeup of Houston were in another state aside from Florida, it's an entirely different conversation.

Dwight *appears* to have left 30 million on the table, but the reality is much different.

and this is the Lakers.

He didn't like Kobe or D'Antoni & he knew Kobe still the focal point of that team despite coming off Achilles surgery, being old & having only one year left on his deal so he bounced.

And not really the guy to hold up as an example of guys who don't want to play with Kobe on a personality basis.

Half the posters in here big upping the comments of a man whose own career had 1/4 the shelf life of Kobe's call Dwight a bitch as it is. We're also talking about a proven winner vs a perrenial bridesmaid going to play with a guy who wilted the first time he hit the big stage.

Dwight said to thank Parsons, of all people, for getting him to Houston, and why? Because he blew up his phone!

Let's be real here:

GS had the better supporting cast in place and would have been an immediate monster. They could have conceivably trotted out a starting 5 of Dwight, Lee, Curry, Thompson, and Iggy. Think about that shit. Even if they traded Lee, the rest of that squad is scary.

Thing is, Houston has no state tax and has been licking his asshole for an entire year and their stars broke out the jelly and syrup and went to town on that shit. He saw a menial financial discrepancy+players who fawned over him like starving children staring at the food in a+an organization with a great tradition of big men that wasn't near as suffocating in depth and history and expectations as LA, and there you have his decision.

Hell, if you're being honest and objective, Kobe may not even crack the top 5 reasons Dwight left, and if he is, he's at the bottom of the list.

It's all good and fun to watch Nelly go on his rant as a Kobe hater, but once the high wears off and you actually look at the big picture.... it's much more bark than bite from a guy whose place in the pantheon of urban music isn't remotely close to the level of Kobe's status in the pantheon of the NBA.

if this was 2-3 years ago he probably would have stayed, Dwight said it himself, it would have been a better fit, but now everyone around him in LA is old, meanwhile Houston has a bunch of young hungry talent and no state tax.

"I just really think the timing in L.A., it wasn't right for me," Howard told ESPNLosAngeles.com's Dave McMenamin on Friday. "Maybe two years ago, or 2-3 years from now, it would have been the right time. But I just think right now the timing was off for me. That's not saying that L.A. is a bad place, but I just think it's all about timing and fit when you're talking about basketball."

Oh, right. Kobe will be retired. THEN it might be the right time for Dwight Howard, Los Angeles Laker.

Jesus Christ. Dwight basically said "Guys, I don't hate LOS ANGELES, I just don't want to be a Laker until that asshole is gone." And you somehow tried to spin it as...what, exactly? Proof that there's NO proof that no one wants to play with kobe?

who exactly has Kobe made better?

when has Kobe ever won without a Big in the paint?

when has Kobe ever done anything without Phil Jackson?

the lakers have spoiled that turkey and not made him accountable

it proves my point Phil Jackson knew how to use the right players for the right situation.

Pringles ain't got no clue.

Potatoe Head Brown had the right agenda, just not enough pace and he didn't win over Kobe.

Fish was a good part in LA whereas in other places he ain't even seeing Raja Bell.

Pau was seen as the white euro KG. i mean he was an All star before he came to LA. Smush? that is funny at what playing the dozens. Trevor is doing good regardless of Kobe. neither one of those Jordan's are memorable at all.

Sasha been in the witness protection program, he ain't exactly done nothing since he left. luke walton actually came into the L with a nice passing game. however he never got any better.

Bynum is a mental case and its all on him period.

Lamar always had the goods however his mind set is limited. he never wanted to be the first option a would have, could have, type of talent.

now since comedy hour is over none of those turkeys aside from maybe Gasol can stack up to Dwight Howard and you know this.

Isiah Thomas and Dennis Johnson each one a chip without a big name Superstar center. please don't like Bill Lambier and Jack Skima are exactly remembered great low post centers.

Jordan was a better player and Phil didn't leave Jordan because he couldn't deal with him. lets remember kobe done had 5 coaches in the past decade not named phil jackson and he didn't do a thing with any of them not even win a post season round.

Jordan did win a post season round minus Phil jackson has Kobe ever done that? and please don't bring up the bench on the job training era of Kobe 96-99 because you know which era of Kobe in his prime and peak I'm talking about.

the Princeton offense would have been effective, however Kobe don't wanna budge and it costs them daily man

In response to Reply # 4

you look at it, D12 took a hit (kinda sorta) going to Houston, lebron and bosh took modest cuts to sign with miami, etc. tim duncan played for less than $10M last year! dude took a brodeur-esque paycut and then some.

here is kobe, who's made the most money of any player for years, and now with his team gearing up for free agency next summer he says he will not take any cut and will "re-sign for as much money as possible."

so, basically, his greed and egotism will preclude the lakers from actualizing their plans. it won't be the first time!

They can/should have enough for two max slots next summer, and I'd be shocked if they pass on younger stars to re-sign Kobe. He's not in any position to force our hand next summer. If they DO resign him without a significant pay cut while also forgoing signing one or two All Star caliber players, it won't be Kobe's fault, it will be management's fault. Shaq pulled that shit and got shipped out. Kobe should be no different.

He thinks that Golden State could have signed Dwight outright, that the Lakers were able to lure Chris Paul in Free Agency, etc. Better to just ignore his ignorance of how pay structures work in the 2013 NBA.

the last time you made this accusation, you linked some blog and passed it as your own expertise. it didn't discredit what i was saying either. what it came down to was whether or not a texas team would prefer pau to nothing and whether or not a team could be paid modestly to take artest. so, i'm not really sure what i missed about the CBA in that exchange.

the above topic has NOTHING to do with the CBA. he said "i doubt the lakers break the bank for kobe."

does that reconcile neatly with his statement that he will "expect to sign for as much money as possible?"

even if kobe signs for a considerable drop in pay--let's say an even $10M--it would seriously complicate their ability to land two max FAs. that's $19M in salary, then you have to pay the melos or lebrons of the world over $20M each. and $10M would be a third of what he makes now, i imagine he has a higher number in mind although it won't be any $30M figure.

they pretty much need to choose between kobe and the future. that's not a possibility that CT discounted eiter.

that is my point. if that's the case, then they are betting heavily on the right guys (namely LeBron, really) hitting the market.

and PLEASE find me where i said "golden state could sign howard outright." between this and the time you misidentified as some sort of bible thumping gay marriage opponent, i really think you need to fuck off. thanks.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

signed him outright?

I said "it was wishful thinking (for CT to say he was going to GS in an S+T for Thompson or whomever)."

And also that "I was the first person to say it would be a straight signing."

When I said that, I said it would be with Houston, but regardless of where he went, it would be a straight signing and not a trade. Basically that the Lakers would prefer salary flexibility to assets. Oh, but I am so fucking dumb and don't know about the CBA or economics of basketball, I only called that weeks beforehand when most were thinking about what they could get back in assets or futures.

Regardless of *some* ambiguity (had you, for example, not seen a single thread on the topic), there is really no way to conclude from that post that I suggested D12 would go to GS at all, let alone as a straight signing. If I had made such assertions, why would *I* be bringing them up after D12 had already signed in Houston?

That is just a nonsense interpretation on your part, that's now being made to show that I know "nothing about the CBA." For someone who knows nothing, I had that deal pegged early, along with Smith to the Pistons and Bynum to the Cavs.

I am done fucking with you in any way, shape or form if you're going to think that little of me and make up bullshit to boot. Yes, I do remember when people accuse me of hateful things. If I did that to you, I imagine you'd make a mental note of it.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

It was responding to you responding to saying he'd go to GSW. If that's not what you meant, then my mistake.

Literally everyone knew that, unless it was with GS, the Lakers wouldn't do a S&T. But way to go.

LOL....okay. You also said Nash could be amnestied and that the Lakers could have signed D12 and Chris Paul (which was only possible if a TON of things went their way, which basically means it was impossible). So uh, miss me with your "calling" those deals.

Make up? Yeah I didn't do that. I pointed out where you were wrong, and apparently misunderstood you in one instance. Do yourself a favor and don't get so upset. I mistook you once YEAAAARS ago which I a) acknowledged was a mistake and b) apologized for. So, if you wanna get all angry about it...uh, okay.

In response to Reply # 228

that was just that, of course i am aware you cant use two amnesty provisions in one year or anything close to that. stretch/waive leaves them with the diminished hit, sure, but in the grand scheme it was not a deal breaker.

pretty flimsy justification for saying i "know nothing," especially when the question at hand (which we agree on, apparently) was just about what price they should be willing to re-sign kobe at.

not "everyone knew," if you go back to the threads loads of people were talking S+T possibilities, even with houston. it started with some discussion about their interest in lin, asik and whatever, well before the thread you linked.

anyway, i'm not that pissed about it at this point, apologies if i went overboard or whatever. i just don't appreciate that kind of misquoting. i make enough mistakes of my own, i dont really need the stuff i get right held against me too.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

And I do not hold it against ANY player to say that they are the best or are close to the best, especially during their career. Shit Sam Cassell would say he was the greatest, and believing it helped him become the first NBA player from Brodo Asogi.

MVPau is that dude (but if you want to be truthful it's MVTrevor and MVPeace on #5) but Shaq is forever shielded from criticism, even though he broke up a good thing in Orlando, evidence mounts that -he- was the one mad in LA to this day, and he hopped from team to team looking for rings to match dude.

it's not that he has 5. it's because of those last 2 that are the ether

Nobody's hitching their wagons to a guy with one foot out of the league, man.

Again - I don't care who wants to be Kobe's friend. He's proven his worth in the league, and has made bums into good players. End of the day, I think Dwight left because Houston is a better situation. Kobe is part of that, I'm sure, but overall? The future is brighter in Houston. Best of luck to him. If he doesn't wanna be in LA, doesn't want to be a Laker, then peace.

That made me actively root against an entire franchise....Most of the time my dislike for a team has been because of a team's history with my squad (Pistons, Knicks, Indy, Miami)...But usually when I have it out for a player I keep it pretty much on target....

Hell, I dug the Lakers during the Magic years and when Shaq came on board...But when that team was handed over to Bean, that was it for me...lol

Doesn't mean I don't respect Kobe's talent.....Dude is a dog on the court...

But his psycho, weirdo, bad teammate act coupled with his fake image (no need to get into all that) just makes dude easily punchable...

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

Why do you care so much about that man's "personality" and what he does off the court? You trying to fuck?

First of all...Chill with that "bitchmade" shit...

I'm a pretty old school guy....I've given passes for athletes who have had drug issues; players that have had personal problems...Served jail time, ect...

The only thing I really care about is how a player interacts with their teammates or just on their team in general...And it's Kobe's "personality" that has caused him to be on that bullshit when it comes to THE TEAM....

I get why Laker fans cheer for Kobe because that's their man...

But if being bitchmade means not being a fan of someone who actually quit on his team and snitched on a ex teammate (who had nothing to do with his own fuck-ups) after getting caught up in some rape shit, my "nigga code" is on red alert...That's beyond "personality"...That's a nigga you don't really want to be around or support, at least where I'm from...

Like I said, Laker fans need not worry about what I think about Kobe...

Do you...And leave the "bitchmade" comments to yourself...

GOAT of his era......long live Prince.....God is alive....

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

Seriously.

This is a team that is telling him THIS IS YOUR TEAM...KOBE IS HANDING IT TO YOU. You get an extra $30 mil and you get to play in LA.

And you leave because you don't like a guy?

Insecure. Especially since they likely won't bring Kobe back after next year if he's really shot.

In response to Reply # 137

He left because...

- 28 years old
- Kobe getting older and bad injury
- team is heading towards rebuilding
- ownership is terrible and moving in the wrong direction
- rebuilding with Mitch will take 4-5 years..
- Kobe says he got 3-4 left in him
- Kobe earned the leader mantle....
- Dwight is 28 years old (keep this in mind)
- Once Kobe does leave....the rebuild will begin officially (see rebuilding time frame)
- Dwight will be 35 by the time the Lakers are "back"
- purple/gold colored fair-weather fans on that bullshit

Why the fuck would he wanna stay with all of that^????

He can leave and RIGHT NOW TODAY play with the soon to be (if not already) best SG in the league AND...AND the WHOLE GOT DAMB TEAM is like 27 and younger.

D Morey WILL get the players.....just do your job.

Less stress.....young team....everyone is cool and aint no bs with your teammates.

I mean.......if he left for any reason....it wasn't cause he was soft or pussy.

The nigga just didn't wanna deal with the bullshit buying the company line while he steadily gets older....

And with the NEW regime in regard to ownership???

FUUUUUCK NO!

Jump ship NOW dawg.....you'll come out better, fam!

Trust.

We see through all that boo boo like it's ghost shit... (c) Quelle Chris

Lebronon joins the greatest franchise in sports history in order to solidify his place amongst the all time greats. Big Boss passes the torch to young Snake. He improves upon Bron's game and adds new dimensions to his game. Lebron feels the love from a nation of powerful supportive fans versus the nation of come snorting vagrants that call themselves Heat fans. Kobe gets to pass the torch, holla at 6, and remind the world that played for one team his whole career. Meanwhile, DHo at home crying.

Therefore, it's not ring chasing if you spend 20 years with the same team. He's passing the torch because he's still a leader. Ray Allen chased a ring.

Goes back to Cleveland to mend that wound on his image only now they have a team set up...they they have been setting up for him since he's been gone.

All you gotta do is plop him in and they INSTANT contenders.

Young as hell ready to be lead by Bron.

He goes back, he is literally the Jesus of basketball.

Even non-Cavs fans will CRAZILY respect the move.

He wont be going to LA to help Kobe TIE MJ's record that LBJ himself is chasing as well.

Not happnin.

Melo will prolly go, tho...

Good luck.

Better tank and hope to get Wiggins.....otherwise.....LA about to become a Clipper town.

Fitting.

“My heart is still in Indiana,” the 23-year-old said “… I’m still a Pacer, and hopefully I remain a Pacer. I’m happy where I’m at.”
George said that him hypothetically joining the Lakers would certainly be a “family-favorite team.”
“Of course it would be tough (to say no to Kobe). You’re talking about playing home.”

this is a common move and a lot of times it is not disingenuous, but let's say i ask pau gasol: "Hey Pau, do you feel comfortable reuniting with Spanish national teammate Jose Calderon?"

And Pau says, "For sure, it feels wonderful to be back playing with him from that team."

Well, should I be desperate enough to use that junky quote, I'd have to clean it up and put in parts of the question to clarify his answer.

So, most likely, the Pacers blogger asked him if it would be tough to say no to playing with Kobe. He gave an answer with pronouns, like a normal human being in a conversation would, and it had to be adapted for clarity in print.

I hope that made sense.

Anyway, no, LB didn't add it, seemed like a reasonable enough swipe to me.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Nah, I got that, but the fact that dude came in here armed with nothing more than THAT quote and thought it made his case for him is comedy.

George said his family would want him to play in LA--you know, because that's where his family lives.

If the question was framed as "What if Kobe and the Lakers wanted to bring you home to LA?", he basically answered it with "It would be hard to say no to that--I mean, you're talking about playing in your hometown. Who wouldn't want to do that?"

If someone wants to take that quote and wave it around like "SEE? SEE? STARS WANT TO PLAY WITH A 39-YEAR-OLD KOBE!" then that's his prerogative...but it's not the way a reasonably person would interpret the quote.

mouthed bullshit.

Here are the gems

- He said nobody wants to play with Kobe and used the random role players that went to play with Lebron in Miami as evidence.

- implied Kobe ran Artest out when the nigga got amnestied.

- used Pau's numbers going down as proof he doesn't make anybody better. Yet, Bosh ain't had a 20 and 10 season since he came over.

- asked why don't kobe take a pay cut. Beyond the fact that the lakers would have to extend his contract, no player is turning down 30 million dollars. Especially one that brought you 5 rings and brings the fans to the arena.

- When asked about this year's playoff sweep with Dwight, the nigga said, "Where was kobe???" like kobe showed a lack of leadership blowing out his Achilles lololol.

the funny part is with the subliminal saying shit without saying it at the end, all Nelly did was make Dwight look less like a guy making a smart basketball decision and more like the bitchmade passive aggressive pussyclaude he came to LA looking like.

Y'all should be HELLA happy you got that cancer off your team!!!!

Seems like a lot of energy being spent on a worthless, passive aggressive, sack of isht player that wasn't a real Laker and didn't deserve the privilege of playing under Kobe's thumb.

reasons Nelly is given don't make Dwight look good at all. It would've been cool to have him. But him leaving for a team that has a higher chance to win now makes sense. Having his homey dropping subliminals about Kobe (or anything other than what he's officially said) being the reason he left looks bitchmade. Regardless, it was the best decision for all involved. We weren't going to win next year with or without him and in 2 years, LA would have roasted him (fairly or unfairly). Tis what it is.

But my comment was about Nelly really. Dwight is mentioned because the thread seems to be making Nelly's inconsistent mad rant out to be something Dwight thinks. If that's true then yeah.

nobody's debating what he's DONE

with that being said, Nelly did say some of the things that alot of people were thinking

and this was 7/13, a full calendar year ago

today, based on what has transpired since

there really isn't an argument

although Kobestan will keep trying

not only does nobody WANT to play with him (ehh, they could still get a pup like Love though)

but nobody even wants to coach him

In response to Reply # 240

the clock was ticking on the Kobe/Pau Connection, so Feel Jackson left. Lakers had issues adding on to that.

they hired Mike Brown. Which, I wouldn't have done if I were the Lakers FO, unless I had some kind of oddball agenda. he's a good coach if you're talking about NBA pre-2009, when Euroball started taking over in various ways. now that it's all about spacing, ball movement and reduced big influence? Mike Brown, who is mostly defensive, is not your best choice. this was proven last season in CLE, in his second tour.

somehow Dwight Howard came over there anyway. He (and Steve Nash, for whichever reason) came to a team that eventually found 'Postrophe as its coach. Kobe got hurt, Dwight sucked, Nash never found his footing, and Kobe among others couldn't stay healthy.

they tried it again last year. Team couldn't stay healthy, various D-Leaguers started and the team entered the lottery. 'Postrophe got fired.

Lakers are still without a coach. Now granted, brand notwithstanding, do you think any marquee FAs want to come to that situation? Kobe may not be reliable healthwise. so you basically got Randle and the D-League, no coach. Where does Kobe factor in besides his absence?

if we're talking that contract, the Lakers need to hasten their rebuild and stockpile assets now as they go into 2016, the next big FA period. Kobe cashing in on his worth to the franchise (let it be known: beloved franchise players instantly raise the stock of a team, just look at CLE right today) suddenly doesn't seem so much a point at which to laugh at The Elite Scrubby-Ass Gunner, as much as padding his exit from the league.

"nobody wants to play with/coach Kobe (b/c Kobe is anti-social, etc)" is myth. the Lakers found takers for years. the problem is, the Lakers just got old, crashed and burned and they can't find someone to drive the tank. this happens.

you're spinning to the 16' FA market, was already spun for this year's FA market by LALstans

at least you sound more reasonable in projecting 2 years from now

instead of...the mighty cloaked will rebuild and be back before your very eyes...abracadabra (c)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JoMBlywH1UI&feature=kp

the Lakers got old?

they only had 2 players under contract going into FA this year

and enough cap space to sign whoever THEY wanted

I also find LALstans take on D12 hilarisad

I'm not even really sure what the beef is there?

I also find an interesting contrast in Pau's LAL career

when he was balling, Kobe was singing the Spainard's praises

when he was struggling, but playing through his own injuries

it was time to put on your big boy pants, I believe was the quote

and now he's unceremoniously departed, but as evident by Kobe's contract, the LAL's are loyal and take care of their players?

through all of the transistions (as you listed above)

one thing has remained constant

is it really a 'myth' to contribute the LAL's recent doldrums to that constant that remains?

really?

because there is no proof that -Kobe- was the reason.

the Lakers were not getting any better after those last two seasons of debacle. Kobe's on borrowed time. The Bulls are actually a good team in need of some help. an "old" Pau >>>>>>>>> Boozer.

if you remove Kobe from the equation, the Lakers are still bad. Bulls are good. this is the same logic that people use(d) w/Melo and the Knicks. adding Kobe's contract to the situation complicates matters. the two most coveted FAs this offseason elected to go elsewhere for reasons not involving Kobe. so what were the Lakers to do?

and he's going to run with the "narrative" about him.

but the Lakers were specifically looking for Bron and/or Melo; high-tier players younger than Kobe that they have a history of attracting.

anyone else available isn't going to be a "building piece" that replaces Kobe, even Kevin Love (that's what they're after). Which is why I think they went harder at Melo than they did anyone else. A Carmelo/Kevin Love combo would have worked greatly for them. The Kobe contract would have complicated that, but the Lakers really didn't have a lot of highly-paid players left on that squad otherwise.

Emotions lead to selective attention, amongst a whole slew of other things. People are going to find anything to support their pre-conceived notions, while ignoring anything that creates dissonance (as you mentioned, there are numerous examples of players coming to play in LA *when* the team was contending).

Funniest part to me is that a lot of these dudes follow teams that have been consistently mediocre and put themselves in that position by shelling out long contracts to mid-tier players creating a perpetual cycle of mediocrity. When the Lakers refuse to do that by not making any inflated offers to mid-tier players and instead abide their time in order to get superstars, it's suddenly Kobe's fault and the team is in dissaray. Lol. Management has certainly made some mistakes (Mike Brown over Adelman, D'Antoni, Kobe's contract) but this off-season isn't one of them.

The LAL have NEVER HAD TO even consider that

THEY'VE ALWAYS gotten whomever THEY wanted

let's not mix words

THEY WANTED MELO

and didn't get him

the fact that the LAL even have to consider signing lesser talent

JUST TO FILL A ROSTER

IS WHAT WE'RE F'N TALKING ABOUT HERE SON!

Please explain to me what is so different this offseason

that the LAL can't sign anybody?

no coach, 1 other player signed, and copious amounts of cap space

and they get nada

nice try throwing shade at other fanbases

as if we have somehow been unable to see the LAL attract big names annually

isn't suggesting Kobe is the reason just the simplest explanation

being that only he and Nash were even under contract when FA began?

players and coaches are choosing to go elsewhere

pretty evident, IMO

What's so different about this off-season: Hmm, let's see. There's no coach, only two players under contract (a 39 year old PG who may only play 20 or so games and a 36 year old coming off Achilles surgery and a broken leg) signed, and a strong perception of weak ownership with Dr. Buss gone....how is that an attractive place for a superstar who wants to win now?

Yet you're blaming Kobe, and then acting like he's the reason other players didn't want to sign (as you said above, "there are other players besides Melo and Bron") when the team hasn't even offered them contracts!...as I said the team doesn't want to invest in mid-tier players that have you ending up in perpetual mediocrity. Something you should understand personally as a 76ers fan.

What variable has changed between the past and present for the Lakers? Contending for a championship, that's the simplest explanation yet you're so pressed to blame Kobe. My point stands even more clearly now, thanks.

254. "0 for 4...Report: Lakers Extended Dirk Nowitzki Max Contract Offer"
In response to Reply # 0

http://lasportshub.com/2014/07/15/report-lakers-extended-dirk-nowitzki-max-contract-offer/?utm_source=FanSided&utm_medium=Network&utm_campaign=Around%20the%20Network

Not only did the Lakers extend max contract offers to LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony, and Chris Bosh, they apparently also offered the same deal to Dallas Mavericks forward Dirk Nowitzki.

According to ESPN’s Marc Stein, the Lakers and the Houston Rockets offered Nowitzki a max contract; however, he rebuffed both teams and has signed a 3-year, $25M deal to stay in Dallas.

The Lakers certainly have never been scared to throw big money at superstar caliber players, even at the latter stages of their careers. It’s worth our time to recognize that Mitch Kupchak and the Lakers front office made an attempt to lure the biggest names in free agency to Los Angeles. However, something is clearly missing in Lakerland.

It was unlikely that Dirk was ever going to leave Dallas, especially because of the bond between Nowitzki and Mavericks owner Mark Cuban. However, this 3-yr, $25M deal is about $5M less than Dirk was expected to sign earlier in the summer. In essence, this is a sweetheart deal for the Mavericks.

Nowitzki could have commanded, and was offered, about 4-years and upwards of $80M on the open market. However, he has played with the Mavericks for his entire career and instead chose to gift the franchise more cap space, a la Tim Duncan.

Every team with space pretty much tried their hand at everyone available.

Brawn went home and nobody but Miami was a player.

Bosh stayed in Miami for more money than he could get elsewhere+more than he’s worth, by a LOT.

Melo stayed home for more money than he could get elsewhere.

Dirk stayed in Dallas, took less, and has a better overall situation than he’d have for the Lakers. Nobody seriously thought Dirk was going anywhere for any reason.

It’s funny that you guys are so intent on pushing this “nobody wants to be a Laker and/or play with Kobe” agenda, considering Dwight+Harden+No state taxes didn’t lure a soul to Houston except for Ariza, and their getting him by overpaying him once again after a contract year.

Not wanting to play for a rebuilding Lakers team and an old Kobe coming off an injury isn’t anywhere near as bad as nobody wanting to play for a contending Rockets team with Dwight, Harden, and (would have) Parsons, and yet you choose to discuss teams forgoing the rebuilding Lakers with the fading star.

Further, Melo, Bosh, Wade, and Dirk ALL stayed put! That means they spurned EVERYONE ELSE. Literally everyone else got told no. Brawn went back to his hometown. That means he literally told everyone else no.
So, please explain why it’s so significant that the Lakers, a team with an overall less attractive set of current circumstances got turned down when everyone else got turned down too?

These are facts.

and Harden? In their prime?

Is he "going in" on the fact that between roster restraints, managment /coaching uncertainty and Kobe being old and coming off significant injury, the Lakers as a whole aren't the most attractive option?

If his only point is that if Kobe was so determined to win above all else, he should have followed Duncan's lead and taken a much more significant pay cut, I have no problem.

If he's doing anything more than that, ignoring the overall state of the Lakers that ISN'T on Kobe and NOT firing away at Dwight, Harden, Morey's supposed genius, and the probable contract match of Parsons as a nice 4th man while all four players get a nice window in the prime of their careers on a stacked team in a state with no state tax, well..... he's just not keeping it 100.

maybe that's the logic people are using in the Wiggy Dogg trade talks
but I liked that trio, even if it was the all "eff some defense" squad

and as a person who renewed his Kobestan citizenship despite current events I agree here.

Kobe could have taken that pay cut, but...

you look at the Lakers right now outside of Kobe and you realize "Kobe" might be the only thing that puts butts in the seats, and that time is limited. Dwight should be getting fried (on multiple fronts).

and the Lakers.

It's absurd to make a federal case out of "NOBODY WANTS TO PLAY WITH KOBE/LAKERS!" when Kobe's old and returning from injury, the front office appears to be unstable, there's limited roster building ability, etc. No shit, it's not the most attractive situation.

When you add in the fact that Brawn really only had two destinations from jump, Melo and Bosh both took the money to stay home along with lesser FA's like Lowry and Dirk while the remaining FA's of note were restricted (Bledsoe, Monroe), or overpaid (Parsons), it suddenly becomes apparent that the issue had absolutely ZERO to do with Kobe or the Lakers or L.A.

Everyone stayed home. Literally every noteworthy FA stayed home with their teams, minus Lebron, WHO WENT HOME!!!! Dirk took less money to stay on a team that had Monte coming into his prime, signed a solid third wheel in Parsons, and was able to assemble a nice overall guard corps.

It's idiotic to act like OMG NOBODY WANTS TO PLAY WITH KOBE OR THE LAKERS!!!! When everyone struck out on every free agent who wasn't their own except for Cleveland, and that had jack shit to do with the Cavs FO and everything to do with Brawn simply wanting to return home.

Since everyone else struck out, it's of zero significance that the Lakers did also, ESPECIALLY when you consider that Houston had money, tradeable assets, and two all stars in the prime of their careers, one of which is a defensively dominant center.

Basically, all of that adds up to a complete non-story when we're arguing about who does or doesn't want to play with who. Even factoring the loss of Pau, he had an opportunity to join a Bulls team that made the playoffs without Derrick Rose and just added a lottery who's already turning heads. It's a no-brainer for anyone to head to a team with a legit title shot after the Heatles broke up.

Nelly tha gawd set this in motion last year and now even ESPN talking about it!

http://espn.go.com/espn/feature/story/_/id/11717596/is-kobe-bryant-reason-los-angeles-lakers-downfall

IF ONE COMMON denominator has persisted throughout Bryant's tenure with the Lakers, it is this: The blame lands elsewhere, and usually with teammates. O'Neal -- at times a mentor to Bryant, at other times freestyle-rapping to a packed club in Manhattan, "Yo, Kobe, tell me how my ass taste" -- is one in a long line of Bryant's teammates who've struggled to stick to a single script in describing the singular man. Bynum, Gasol and Howard have each been at turns coy, reticent, warm or biting. And, in turn, each has taken massive doses of blame in the media without Bryant meaningfully coming to their rescue.

"I'VE HAD A LOT OF CLIENTS WHO DIDN'T WANT TO PLAY WITH KOBE."
- PROMINENT NBA AGENT
"I've had a lot of clients in the last five years, good players, who didn't want to play with Kobe," says an agent who has had numerous NBA stars. "They see that his teammates become the chronic public whipping boys. Anyone who could possibly challenge Kobe for the spotlight ends up becoming a pincushion for the media. Even Shaq."

You know, the same guys people keep trashing Kobe for not being able to get?

It’s amusing that an over the hill Kobe with a team on the decline catches all kinds of heat for not attracting all these big names, yet two young stars in the prime of their careers with a team on the rise struck out on all the same guys and nobody says a word.
It’s amusing that Nelly used Dwight as his prime example of people not wanting to play with Kobe while ignoring that fact that nobody was exactly beating down Dwight & Harden’s door.

Sorry champ, but an ounce of objectivity would tell you that it says worlds more about Dwight, Harden, and Morey’s supposed genius, and the fact that nobody wanted to play with them than nobody wanting to play with Kobe, 19 seasons in, coming off an injury with a broken Steve Nash, no coach, and no Jerry Buss. Nobody was clamoring to play with Bosh and Wade in Miami after Bron left. Who was beating down NY’s door to play with Melo? Who was angling to be a Rocket? A Bull? NOBODY, that’s who, yet conveniently it’s only an issue if Kobe strikes out on free agents. Pau was the last major FA chip to fall and went for a discount to a situation with a team that just made the playoffs without Derek Rose while Derek Rose was about to come back.

Except… well, except for the fun fact that when you look at where everyone went, it’s clear that none of the big names left except for Bron, and he went home to Kyrie and a roster of first contract lottery picks and tradable assets. Melo & Bosh stayed home and followed the money, Dirk stayed home for less money in a move that surprised absolutely nobody, Lowry stayed home, Parsons bounced to Dallas for an insane contract he would have been equally insane to turn down, etc.

I mean, you guys keep going hard to push this narrative that nobody wants to play with Kobe, yet the actual, verifiable, out in the open facts pretty much tell a different story. Was Paul George supposed to turn down a massive guaranteed contract on a team that looked poised to be a title player then and there and wait a few years to come to L.A? Is that something people even do? Where’s the history of players of his stature making such moves?

No, most of these guys did exactly what the CBA was designed to encourage them to do: stay with their current team for more money.

Any made-up bullshit is fine so long as it tarnishes the image of a guy they spend more time shitting on than they do supporting another player they actually like.

Especially this guy, who's a Knicks fan, and hasn't had anything to look forward to outside of fuel for hating Kobe and probably a few others.

is obviously looking for more "clicks" so he puts out an anti-Kobe article...

**shrug**

whatever...

couple things you'll see this season..guaranteed...

the fact that Kobe is looking like he's physically back to where he was before the injury is going to have the Kobe/Laker Hater nation revert back to tired...played out....and even fabricated stories like this to avoid speaking on how wrong they were about Kobe being done.

also remember the one FACT that always trumps articles like this is the fact that 2 years ago young NBA players were polled as to who was their favorite/most admired player currently in the NBA.... Kobe Bryant won by far....

You simply cannot have it both ways.... He can't be the favorite/most admired player in the league by NBA PLAYERS....then claim Kobe possesses attributes that those same NBA PLAYERS are rejecting..

lol... you just cant have it both ways.....it's not possible...

this article is being blown to pieces on talk radio our here as I type this because it's completely full of holes, and written by a guy with plenty anti-kobe stories in his archives..

and as far as Nelly....

look.... congrats on real husbands of Hollywood or whatever reality tv show you're doing but when it comes to sports??? St. Louis doesn't have a basketball team....they're about to lose their football team..... and Nelly is just barely a better rapper than Kobe...

this would be a moot point.

Lakers were a lottery team this past season. name a big-time FA who jumped on such a bandwagon, outside of LeBron James (and if there EVER was an exception to a rule...)

the "doesn't want to play with Kobe" myth doesn't hold water
FAgents don't want to be part of a "building process"

edit: Dwight Howard molests team mates on the bench (verifable with video). if Kobe kicked him out, he probably didn't want no parts of that fuckery on his team
