"lol this fool "Kobe Bryant challenges Dwight Howard in meeting" swipe"

http://sports.yahoo.com/news/nba--kobe-bryant-challenges-dwight-howard-in-meeting-211443923.html

When Los Angeles Lakers star Kobe Bryant spoke to Dwight Howard on Tuesday, his words to the free-agent center resounded an unmistakable and unflinching message: Let me teach you how to be a champion.

Kobe Bryant, left, was part of the Lakers' contingent that met with Dwight Howard on Tuesday. (AP)"You need to learn how it's done first, and I can teach you here," Bryant told Howard during the Lakers' presentation, witnesses in the room described to Yahoo! Sports.

Bryant didn't come to Howard's recruitment meeting in Beverly Hills to appease him, but to challenge Howard to stay and embrace the burden of the franchise's culture and embrace Bryant's demanding disposition. Bryant invoked Michael Jordan's hard-driving ways as his blueprint, and how it pushed the Chicago Bulls to six titles.

Bryant, a five-time NBA champion, insisted he wouldn't retreat in pushing Howard every day, that as much as the Lakers needed Howard, Howard needed Bryant and the Lakers, too.

"You have to learn how it's done," Bryant told Howard, witnesses described. "I know how to do it and I've learned from the best – players who have won multiple times over and over."

"Instead of trying to do things your way, just listen and learn and tweak it, so it fits you," Bryant told him.

Howard has retreated to Colorado for a few days, surrounded by representatives, to make a decision on his future. The Lakers are fighting frontrunner Houston, Dallas, Atlanta and Golden State to sign him.

At times in the 2012-13 season, Bryant and Howard clashed over decidedly different day-to-day approaches to the game. Away from the floor, Howard's lighthearted tomfoolery clashed with Bryant's relentlessly serious-minded way. Bryant is rehabilitating a torn Achilles, but is expected to be back early in the Lakers season.

Before the Lakers ever traded for Howard a year ago, each player had reservations about playing together, about how they would blend. As the Lakers struggled, the construction of a relationship was clearly strained, but there were times when they found common ground.

If this was goodbye between them on Tuesday, Bryant had gone out the way he had come into a relationship with Howard: telling him his basketball truths, his beliefs, his way.

"You have to learn how it's done," Bryant told Dwight Howard on the way out of the Lakers, or maybe the way back into them.

Only now, Dwight Howard gets the final word.

that's a fact.

If he bounces to Houston, his chances of winning a chip increase exponentially more than if he stays put in LA with the Golden Girls and them.

They had like the same record.

The Rockets are younger and can get better from improvements from some of their younger players.....however, the Lakers were hurt all year.

The Rockets status' has grown more without playing a game or signing a player than any team I've ever seen. They're really not that good, as it stands. They don't get Dwight, and they're winning high 40's at the most.

>They had like the same record.

Kobe, Dwight, Nash, MWP, Gasol.....the same record? Werd? And this is a good sign? lol

Adding Nash and Howard and your record ends up being worse?

Iono kid....not looking good.

>The Rockets are younger and can get better from improvements
>from some of their younger players.

no shit?

....however, the Lakers
>were hurt all year.

Happens to old people playing a young persons sport...

>The Rockets status' has grown more without playing a game or
>signing a player than any team I've ever seen. They're really
>not that good, as it stands. They don't get Dwight, and
>they're winning high 40's at the most.

Reason for the optimism...

- Harden proved he's a star
- oldest player on the team is like 26
- made the playoffs while still being youngest team in the league
- still room for growth (as you wisely mentioned)
- High ceilings on all players from Harden all the way down to Canaan
- One of the best GM's in the game

With no DH....high 40's to early 50's (more like it) is pretty good for a team with a starting lineup where EVERYONE is 26 or younger...

Youngest team in the league....rag-tag style of O (true) but still get shit done.

Plop in DH, have some direction....look out league.

Plop in DH along with Josh Smith and got damn!!!

As of July 3, 2013...they better.

It's true.

We see through all that boo boo like it's ghost shit... (c) Quelle Chris

I don't need to fact check this one. It's easy to accept at face value.

I get the point but it's another way of trying to assert his dominance in the situation.

He's got no ability to motivate people on their own level.
He's basically doing the same shit Shaq did with him

In response to Reply # 68

Kobe is a large expiring contract and almost no team could take him on.

So...let's not try to equate the situations here when it comes down to that.

I mean while we're at it, let's just say "Nope this is nothing like the other one because D'Antoni never won a title, so..."

Kobe has to pass the torch, and has not. Shaq didn't either. The Lakers are throwing everything they can at Dwight...Kobe is absolutely untouchable.

there's really not much ammo for kobe being better, other than playing in a major market and with the most dominant center of the last 40 years.

Dude is barely on one leg, a shell of his former self, 35 and on his way out....

yet his main focus in trying to get Dwight to sign a long contract with LA is so that HE can teach him how to be a champion...

lol if I am Dwight that would be my cue to exit...

no wonder that meeting was short as shit lol

It's not like Kobe was gonna be anything other than his usual slightly-psychotic win-obsessed self next year. Some people can play alongside that, others can't. If Dwight doesn't want to play alongside that, then he needs to go.

he said earlier in an interview that he doesn't want to "convince"
Dwight to stay because if he has to convince him, then it's easy for
him to shrug off responsibility when adversity arises. it has to be Dwight's decision

Both are great companies that get LARGE money.....

You can stay at stuffy ass Goldman, or you can bounce...go to a younger, better, adaptable company and do the same job, get the same loot and be free without being micro-managed.

If he smart....he adapts to the changing business environment and stays ahead of the curve.

Staying put is the way of the dinosaur.

only thing kobe could do (knowing damn well houston is a better opportunity) is challenge him to try and win a title as a laker
if that dont mean that much to him fine

He could have said this:

"Our future is now, and our future is you. This is your team going forward, and we're going to do everything we can to help you win multiple titles here."

THAT would have been a hell of a sales pitch coming from one of the all-time great Lakers and the face of the franchise for the last 18 years.

from the report, Kobe's approach was to:

"challenge Howard to stay and embrace the burden of the franchise's culture"

it can't be Dwight's team/franchise unless Dwight accepts that burden.
you have to be all-in to carry that role. it can't be given to him.
he has to earn it. by teaching Dwight what he needs to know
to be a champion Kobe *is* offering to pass the torch, but it can't be
passed until someone's able to carry it

wade and lebron "doing it wrong" got to the finals and now back to back championships. they didn't lose because of torch passing. yall invented a narrative about a team losing to satisfy your hopes about bron's failings.

kobe and dwight "learn how to win" got to barely-made-playoffs and splitsville

It's all about the way you go about putting him in that role. Telling Dwight it's HIS team now, that HE is the future of the franchise, and that THEIR job is to facilitate his transformation into a champion is a tactful way of accomplishing the same goal.

It's finesse. It's how you manage and approach people. It's meeting people where they are, understanding what kind of person they are, identifying how they best receive and respond to certain information, and basing your approach on that.

That's far more effective than stubbornly clinging to his personal approach to everything at all times.

People are funny, indeed. Somehow, there was ONLY one possible approach to achieve that goal.

There's a reason Bron has elevated himself to his current heights, and he said as much during his finals MVP interview last year, he stopped giving a fuck what the public thought and just played for himself and teammates. That kind of mentality is what Kobe is referring to imo.

they're at a disadvantage since he's already had 1 miserable year there, I think tough love is the way to play this negotiation. It's a desperation move, but that's kinda what's needed.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

they would give better advice and also keep it humble.

the lakers are pathtic at this time and point, old and nobody wants to be associated with them like that.

Kobe ain't got no class and lacks tact.as great as a player as he is, without Shaq and Phil he wouldn't be in no position to talk like that.

the clippers rule LA and the Lakers got egg on there face.

Lakers were expected to be in the WCF at least.

Clippers were supposed to be 2nd round fodder at best.

Both teams underachieved, but the Lakers fell off a cliff and the Clippers won more games both in the regular season and playoffs.

Advantage - Clippers.

my badd not enough to win a post season game because Kobe isn't there.

3 players to the finals ain't that doesn't count in the post season.

one more time

If it were any other nigga in the league saying it, this would be met with acclaim and praise for "being direct" and "honest" with Dwight because of his maturity issues

If Dwight is the adult that he claims he is, then he should have taken the message in stride and as a challenge, not a personal attack, which it wasn't

If he did that, and still bounces, then godspeed peace two fingers, L.A. wasn't the place for him

But if he leaves because, in part, he got sensitive over some blunt words, then fuck 'em

wouldn't really be a problem with pretty much any other player. Dwight is just the type of guy to be pussyclaudish about it.

That said, I'd side eye Bean if he groveled for the nigga. All in all, I don't think what he said will be the deciding factor. It's going to be either money/LA/post career or playing with a younger core.

Dwight is an adult. He knows what he wants to do...instead of everyone begging him around town....and letting his prairie-dogging ass make the whole city beg like bitches, Kobe said what needs be said (I am sure he said more, but this will always be the juiciest parts). if Dwight wants to stay, stay. If not, he can head to Houston happier than a nun squatting in a cucumber farm. Wish him luck

comedy.

http://espn.go.com/nba/story/_/page/5-on-5-130705/where-dwight-howard-end-up

3. What's your reaction to Kobe's "honest" pitch to Howard?

Huq: After he patronized Howard all year and accused him publicly of faking injury, I guess it makes sense to continue with that tone. Only in Kobe's mind could that possibly have been a good idea. Oh, and if it's about learning how to win championships, don't you think big man Kevin McHale would have more to offer to Howard, Kobe?

Soriano: I think, from what we know of him, that it was classic Kobe. He seemed to try to appeal to Dwight from a competitive standpoint while also giving some big-brother type of advice that comes from his own experiences. Over the past several years, this has been Kobe's M.O., and in that respect it wasn't surprising at all.

Strauss: Granted, I wasn't in the room for full context, but the pitch sounds condescending. If that's the case, I'd sympathize with Kobe's inclination to speak his mind amid those who grovel before ringless Dwight. It's just that honesty isn't always the best policy when the other guy has all the leverage. Who knows, though? Perhaps Bryant has some sort of insight on why this would work.

Verrier: It's too predictable. By all indications, Howard was hesitant to come to the Lakers in the first place because of Bryant's overbearingness. So instead of coddling him like most teams would, Kobe doubles down on MJ scare tactics and tries to will him into staying like so many late-game midrange jumpers. He knows the Kobe System isn't an actual thing, right?

Windhorst: Frankly, if Kobe wasn't going to come into the room and say he was willing to yield control of the offense to Howard, he probably should've just stayed home. Of course, this is not at all in Kobe's personality, and that's why he and Dwight were never a great team.

I know you'd rather see us capped out with a 6 seed and all. You ask your cutesy question as though the story of our current position is an either/or proposition that hinges solely on not signing Dwihgt- but if you could divorce yourself from the AgendaWarz snark and add some objectivity and big-picture thinking to your analysis you’ll quickly see how disingenuous that question is.

As far as rebuilding projects go, we’re fine. As someone who doesn’t like the team I’m sure you’d like to pretend that re-signing D12 and picking up Melo or some shit was going to elevate us into the title picture or some such nonsense. Only someone who hates the team or just has no sense of the big picture would consider that a better scenario than what we have now.

If you think “building” to a series of first round knock-outs and cap restraints is better than financial flexibility, a string of high draft picks and talent that can be developed and/or packaged and moved, you’re being dishonest.

you were trying to win at every point up until this year. you failed miserably.

had you kept dwight, you would have succeeded at your organizational goal far better. dwight, in case you missed it, hasn't missed the playoffs since he left.

kobe gave a "sales pitch" that was guaranteed to alienate dwight.

None of these things are remotely disputable. yes, dwight is a knucklehead and some of what kobe had to say was true, but so what? what does truth have to do with sales?

>you were trying to win at every point up until this year. you
>failed miserably.

What's that got to do with us being better off without Dwight?

>had you kept dwight, you would have succeeded at your
>organizational goal far better.

Notice how you avoid my point about being stuck in capped out mediocrity and roll with this corporate styles response where you dance around the real and obvious issue?

>dwight, in case you missed it,
>hasn't missed the playoffs since he left.

Dwight, in case you missed it, was a tire fire in Houston, couldn't get home court in the east and is currently staring at an 0-2 deficit and putting up horrid numbers for a guy on his salary scale. It's hilarious that you find this to be a loss for us.

>kobe gave a "sales pitch" that was guaranteed to alienate
>dwight.

Still avoiding the subject of how Dwight would be so great for us? I'm shocked.

>None of these things are remotely disputable.

You cited a bunch of things that don't explain how and why retaining Dwight would have lead to anything beyond the mediocrity he's shown since he left.

I can cite the indisputable fact that some people like spaghetti, but that doesn't make it relevant to the subject at hand.

>yes, dwight is a
>knucklehead

Understatement much? This is your closing argument for why we would be better of with a guy who alienated his last team and won't get out of the first round with his current team?

>and some of what kobe had to say was true, but so
>what? what does truth have to do with sales?

It has to do with why we're better off with the way things turned out than we would be had we kept him, but you're too busy citing indisputable diversions to discuss that

Ben doesn't have a zero in every statistical category for his rookie year?

Embiid hasn't have more injuries than complete seasons played?

What financial flexibility? How many playoff games has D12 played in since his departure? How many have the Lakers played in? They don't have a cornerstone player, they don't have any more cap space with Mozgov/Deng than they would have with Howard and they are praying to God lottery balls fall their way or they are really fucked. Yeah, I am sure even Howard's dumb ass can figure out that he made the right move leaving.

> How many playoff games has D12
>played in since his departure? How many have the Lakers played
>in?

Is that the barometer, a few playoff games? I don’t think that holds water unless mediocrity is the goal. I’d rather be where we are now than a capped out 6 seed with an anchor on the wrong side of his career.

>They don't have a cornerstone player

Well yeah, we’re in a rebuilding mode. I don’t think we can say that about BI just yet. But I'd absolutely take rebuilding over Dwight based on the mediocre career he's had since he's left.

>they don't have any
>more cap space with Mozgov/Deng than they would have with
>Howard

I can say with near certainty that we’d have no space at all right now with Dwight because more dominoes would have fallen. Signing him would mean a “win now” mentality, which, mind you, is part of why we’re in the position you speak of below. We gambled on Nash because bringing Dwight put us firmly in a win-now mentality.

Re-signing Dwight would have doubled down on that and we’d absolutely be capped out.

Further, we’ve seen exactly how fragile this dude is if he’s not being placated like he’s an alpha despite not really having alpha chops and not really being as spry as he was in his prime.

>and they are praying to God lottery balls fall their
>way or they are really fucked.
I’m not sure it’s *that* dire if we lose the pick, but yeah it’s not going to be good.

>Yeah, I am sure even Howard's
>dumb ass can figure out that he made the right move leaving.
It’s not like he’s lighting the world on fire or anything and the feelings is more than mutual. I think this would have been a failed experiment for us and he’d have been under far more scrutiny here than he was in Houston.

His argument is that they were better off letting Howard go and using the money for something else. Howard has been gone for several seasons and in that time they have done nothing remotely constructive with the money.

That means filling the cap space and trying to build a winner around him (which isn't very plausible). Hence, if we do sign Dwight, then we have zero financial flexibility and more than likely stuck in limbo as a middling playoff seed. As it stands, we have 30 million in cap space this summer, 37+ if we opt to stretch either of Mozgov or Deng's deals (more likely Mozgov with Zubac's emergence but that would still surprise me, more likely next summer than this summer).

Not having Dwight and being in the lottery has given us multiple cost controlled assets with 30+ million cap space to build around them rather than multiple sunken cost assets stuck in a middle seed with no flexibility. Pretty obvious the former is preferable than the latter.

In response to Reply # 136

If they had signed Howard, Dwight and Kobe's deals both would have ended last season, no? They still would have had cap space last year and if Dwight got an extra year, he would have been done this season (and maybe spared you the Mozgov contract.)

It's an interesting hypothetical but how much would have changed?

The Lakers were in the lottery with Kobe and Howard so it's not a sure thing that the team would have been better, especially given Kobe and Dwight's injury issues. Also, Gasol mighth have been dealt since he hated his role with Dwight in the middle. The rumored offers were deals around Bargnani, RAnderson, and Derrick Williams/Pekovic so that's another step back for the Lakers and that's more money spent which means less chance of the Lake Show adding contracts that would be adding into their current cap.

MAYBE Kupchak deals Clarkson for a vet.

MAYBE Kupchak deals the 2015 pick instead of getting D'Angelo but he still would have seen the writing on the wall about the future of the team and Russell would have filled a need.

The biggest risk seems like Howard might have been good enough to keep them from landing Ingram last year.

But there's a very real chance that the team could look somewhat similar to the way they do now even if they had re-signed Dwight.

A lot would have changed. Firstly, Dwight's contract would have run from 2013-2014 to 2018-2019. Secondly, we aren't waiting to land superstar FA's because we already have two max contracts on the cap with Dwight and Kobe so that means you're filling out the rest of the roster by going after quality players rather than salary cap fillers (and we missed out on numerous quality players because we decided to wait on these stars...IT comes to mind, he openly said he wanted to be signed by us)

We weren't in the lottery, it was the 8 seed. Gasol might have been dealt but he also offered to re-sign, we just weren't willing to give him the money he wanted...that tune can completely change if we're trying to win now.

>MAYBE Kupchak deals Clarkson for a vet.

We have no idea if Clarkson is even drafted. We don't know what other FA's we would have signed, guard might not even be an issue and on a win-now team, do we take a flyer on a tweener guard who likely isn't going to get much time to develop anyways (that time on the court his rookie year is why he has even turned into a serviceable player)

>MAYBE Kupchak deals the 2015 pick instead of getting D'Angelo
>but he still would have seen the writing on the wall about the

I highly doubt we have anything close to a #2 pick with Dwight and higher quality FA pick-ups around him.

>The biggest risk seems like Howard might have been good enough
>to keep them from landing Ingram last year.

No the risk is we don't get any of our lottery picks because there's a very slim chance that management is just biding it's time while it has Dwight and Kobe under contract rather than going out and paying up for a quality supporting cast.

>But there's a very real chance that the team could look
>somewhat similar to the way they do now even if they had
>re-signed Dwight.

No there isn't a very real chance of that. Like I said, the Dwight deal runs through 2019 and our approach to FA changes completely. We'd be stuck in purgatory with low seeding and no flexibility.

Dwight re-signing completely changes the context and therefore approach of the team. I think it's a ludicrous stretch to say we end up in the same position when you consider that.

I think Kobe and Dwight both missed half the season that year and if they traded Gasol for the likes of Bargnani then they could have been pretty damn bad.

And I'm not sure how you'd be signing any higher quality FA pickups. Dwight, Kobe, and Nash's dead money alone had the Lakers capped out. The only reason they were even able to talk to Isaiah Thomas was because Dwight left (and they didn't sign anyone big.) If Dwight's there, IT (and Lin, who they finally used the cap space on) wouldn't have been options.

And if Kobe and Dwight's relationship didn't improve, I can't imagine the Lakers would be a prime choice for top MLE ring chasers. They'd be a poor man versions of the Clippers but with a hobbled Kobe and Dwight instead of CP3 and Blake.

Ultimately, it's obviously better that they didn't sign Dwight. But I also don't think it's a given that the extended Howard Era would have seen the Lakers get better.

who is to say that they spend $50M on a busted Kobe if they are actually competing? who is to say they don't eat one year of Artest's deal and instead buy out Nash? Who is to say that a somewhat competitive Lakers team with names isn't more attractive than a dead ass roster?

It's always hard to bank on signing FAs, but the bottom line here is that Howard was an asset that they lost for nothing. Hard to believe that made them better, especially seeing what they did in the following years.

I certainly don't think signing him would have made them a worse team. You could say they would have been drafting lower but that makes it sound like they put their lotto picks to great use. So far the jury remains out on that.

Dude was extolling the virtue of "cap flexibility." Well, any cap flexibility they had for letting Howard walk in what could be seen as nearly as full contract ago (from the five-year standpoint) or two contracts ago (he has signed two since leaving LA) has already been seen in action. They managed to sign two below average players who are well below average values. So I don't really get where having cap flexibility helped them; they weren't able to sign anyone and still are not.

I'm not saying they should have kept Howard--but they certainly seemed to think so--but to say put some rosy spin on his departure is BS. The flexibility they got had led them nowhere. The argument could be that he would have kept them from moving toward being a top team but that is purely hypothetical. We don't know how long they keep Kobe or what moves they make to build around Howard. We know he wasn't the central piece for a big winner, but we know he was the No. 2 man on a team that reached the conference finals in Houston. So who is to say they don't acquire another star? On the other hand, we know damn well what they did with that "cap flexibility."

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

7th or 8th playoff seed and getting bounced in the first round is the same as not making the playoffs so might as well blow it up and start over.

Dwight is not leading a team anywhere. Houston figured that out quickly and were more than happy to see him leave, their team got worse every year he was there lol...

There is no "process" there, there is just reacting to a situation that fell apart and taking what draft picks do come their way. The Sixers situation fell apart around the Bynum trade much like the Lakers' did around the Nash/Howard fiasco, and their response was to go all in one direction. Stack chips, spend as little as possible and go with the highest upside player in the draft. The Lakers didn't do anything of the sort, they just got some high picks because they stunk and they made pretty safe plays with those picks.

Mostly I was fucking with ThaTruth because he has bad-mouthed the process and here he is advocating for a watered-down version of it.

How? Houston got worse every year he was there and didn't even try to re-sign him and are obviously better off with out him.

He was complaining about touches in LA and is even more of a role player now.

Losing Dwight turned out to be a blessing in disguise since it (and Kobe's injuries) sped up the tank.

Also, you could argue that Kobe wasn't wrong in calling out a dude with a history of being soft who was about to sign a huge long term deal.

Granted, Kupchak squandered that money on Deng and Mozgov so it's a hollow victory but it's a victory nonetheless for the future of the Lakers franchise.

I'd definitely rather be stuck in mediocrity with the shell of a former all star and DPOY than these young players.

Who wouldn't?

Wonder why.

Not sure why it's so hard for you to accept that keeping Dwight wouldn't have worked out so great for us.

http://www.myajc.com/sports/basketball/howard-upset-benching-and-this-homecoming-seemed-doomed-from-start/tCgLNXHF36EzWt7xB7FdyO/

Howard is not happy. The day after the Hawks were drop-kicked into the offseason by Washington, he used the word “pissed” three times to describe his feelings about the way both his and the team’s the season ended.

“It was very difficult,” Howard said Saturday. “I want to play. I want to be out on the floor. I want to make a difference. I want to make an impact, and I can’t do that on the bench.”

He denied suggestions that matchups should have anything to do with his reduced time. He denied season-long suspicions that he struggles in the Hawks’ ball-movement, pick-and-roll offense. Physically, he said he feels “amazing.” Mentally, that’s another story.

After sometimes avoiding speaking to the media following games this season, Howard responded to every question Saturday, even if not always going into great detail. He made it clear he was upset and didn’t deny that his dramatically reduced role was not in the blueprint presented to him before he signed as a free agent.

So yes, player and coach will need to have a conversation.

“That’s something that we have to talk about,” he said. “I can’t give you details here.”

Is it safe to say your role wasn’t what was laid out to you before signing?

“I’ll let you say that. I just want to get ready for next year.”

When it was suggested he was biting his tongue, Howard said, “I just want to get ready for next season.”

Howard was the centerpiece of Budenholzer’s offseason makeover. But in the playoffs he somehow evolved into the equivalent of a gravy boat — a seldom-used piece on the roster. He played in just over 16 of a possible 72 minutes in the fourth quarters of six playoff games against the Wizards.

“It hurts,” Howard said. “I’m sure if you wrote the best stories in the world and nobody read your stories and they told you to stop writing and you saw somebody else’s story that wasn’t as good as yours, I’m pretty sure you’d be pissed, too. That’s how it is in basketball.”

"Howard’s problems have nothing to do with style or system and everything to do with the fact he cares so little about basketball that he might actually expel more energy in not caring than he would if he just tried giving a damn."

TBH the fact that you're even a mod here fits squarely within Jag's narrative of OK-sanctioned aggression, bullying, and toxicity. *shrug*
