"MLB this week: First to 50? Dem Bucs!!!"

Lot to talk about, gang. Pirates...first team to 50 wins. No jinx, but damn, they look slick right now. What else, what else (c)my Pops:

Josh Beckett is done, no disrespect? Look, I kinda don't like his fat-faced ass but I can't party on anybody's season (possibly career) being over.

Waino is cookin!! Dude has four CG this season and his K/BB is damn near 10!!! LOL!! He's a video game right now and the Cardinals were right for locking him up and avoiding any drama. I SO wanted him to come on back to the Braves next season.

Chris Davis is taking home run derby swings during actual games. He's like the anti-Brady Anderson that won't fall off the earth after his 50 home run (or more) season.

Blue Jays won like 47 straight games and are still 7.5 out, LOL.

I like that Rodney/Cabrera shit yesterday. Leyland said there will be a price to pay. That should be fun.

Brandon Phillips is still better than your favorite 2nd baseman.

Because he's, like, a lot better than Brandon Philips.

Obviously, Cabrera is right to be uncomfortable with a 98mph fastball that close to his brain. But the guy was a teammate fairly recently, so he shouldn't be working under the misapprehension that Fernando Rodney throws his fastball where he wants.

Rodney walked nearly seven guys per nine innings when Cabrera was his teammate in 2008, so again, it's not like he's unfamiliar with the fellow's body of work.

It was obviously unintentional. Shit happens.

edited to reflect the primary source of this nonsense: Jim Leyland's absurd tough-guy rant.

Cabrera not talking about it and then homering today was pretty awesome.

was uninententional? And what was "tough guy" about what Leyland said? There is a place for pitching inside, but not going 98 above the shoulders.

Fernando Rodney comes off as kind of a goofball, but I don't think a marginal two-pitch talent has accumulated 21 million dollars by throwing at people when he's up 1-2 during a tie game in the 10th pitching for a playoff contender. He threw inside and it sailed on him. Shit happens.

And the tough guy nonsense trickles down from there. Possessing eyeballs, I assume Leyland knows that it was an accident, so anything past that is posturing.

Cards but I didn't want to jinx them, we've hit a bit of a rough patch recently but they still have been balling out, those bats are sick, I'm worried about our pitching staff outside of Waino

I like ole Colby, though. Good, country boy. Just wasn't built to play under TLR. Bet he would have flourished with Matheny.

just shutout San Diego, his sixth start in a row allowing 2 runs or less (2.72 ERA, 1.06 WHIP, 9.1 K per 9). he caught my eye when he one-hit the Phillies back in May, and he's only gotten better: throwing pure gas with a sweeping, slurvy slider and tight curve. nobody cares since he plays for the Marlins, but his rookie season has been right there with Miller and Puig.

- his game score of 87 against San Diego is the highest by a 20-year-old since Kerry Wood (1998)

- struck out 10 batters for the second time this season, the first pitcher under 21 to do so since Felix Hernandez (2007)

thank goodness Bryan LaHair made the All-Star game last summer.

baseball has an absurd coda of "respect", though. Papelbon and other veterans are just mad Puig hasn't been humbled by the game yet.

So I assume he'll be cool as long as Puig gets another 90 plate appearances this season and approximates 1/3 the workload of a season-long starter at his position.
