-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

brown or black or all white only....never blue....if you go blue you are forced to wear long white sweat soncks, and long white sweat socks do not go with slacks ....ever...
brown tennis shoes....Black tennis shoes....all white tennis shoes...
black sweat socks....brown sweat socks....and if you go with all white shoes....you can wear short...very short white sweat socks

that said, i wear slacks and sneakers all the time. i hate hard soled shoes, though i own some dress boots that i mix in and a couple traditional dress shoes for funerals and stuff.
you can't wear the little short socks and have your leg showing like that when you sit IMO. looks very, very tacky. white athletic socks are also a bad call. to me, you can match either the shoes or the pants primarily with the socks (whereas typically i'd say match the shoes with sneakers, match the pants with formal shoes), but you have to give it the eye test. if something is way incongruous, then don't rock it.
the issue here is that the sneakers kind of come out of nowhere. they don't match what he is wearing in any way, shape or form.
edit: to the original question, i think something ambiguous works best. i've got a lot of fine fabric athletic or high cut cushioned ones that look a lot fancier than what wilbon has but aren't dress socks. i've got a number of dress socks in solid colors and breathable fabrics that can be work with sneaks easily. i think it would look just as weird to have like wool, argyle socks on with sneakers as what wilbon has. you have to find a balance.
