They also generally need an upperclassman leader or two to help guide them.
Kentucky, outside of Nerlens, didn't have recruits this year that were ready to come in and win right away. They either have effort issues (Poythress), coachability issues (Goodwin), or are just very raw (WCS). There also aren't any upperclassman leaders.
That's the danger of losing a whole roster and trying to replace them all in one year. It looks great on paper, but it very rarely works the way one would think it should.

Considering the fact that everyone had been fawning over these dudes since they were 16, I'm sure they thought they could just come in and keep the machine rolling.

Combined with no upperclassmen leadership.
They depended on Freshman (Goodwin and Poythress) to carry a majority of the scoring load, which you should never do.
That trickled down to him putting way too much pressure on a young sensitive point guard who wants to play well, constantly getting yelled at by his coach, blamed by everyone but then may have an off game and you end up with this....
Hopefully this will help out in the long run with players staying for next year and willing to buy in to a team concept when there's more players that can contribute and carry out the team concept.

He might crack and not develop, but then he would have cracked at some point later on, perhaps in the NBA
