"Pro Athletes who are/were a perfect fit for their city"
Wed Mar-13-13 08:53 AM by Tiger Woods

Iverson,Dawk, Barkley obviously all prime personification examples of Philadelphia.

I think this year's rookie class of QBs landing where they all did is especially fascinating: White, goofy, but hardworking Luck landing in Indy...Griffin being a hyper-athletic Obama figure in DC...Tannehill being a dumb lame bamma in the dumb lame bamma capital of Miami...and Russell Wilson being overlooked, unorthodox, but a lot of fun much like Seattle. And Kaepernick was a second year guy, but if you were to go into a lab to devise the perfect 49ers quarterback for 2012 and beyond I can't imagine you'd come out with someone who better represents his city than this kid.

Be sure to differentiate between the player being a perfect representation of his host city versus being a perfect fit for his specific team. Case in point; Derek Jeter is a great representation of how special New York can be, whereas Amare Stoudemire's habitually hurt fire-extinguisher-punching dumb ass is just a perfect Knick.

Who ya got?

They focus on the not smiling, not being friendly, breaking his arm and playing, tearing his ACL and playing part.

I could only imagine how many Good Will Hunting type dudes went crazy when he pushed Kris Humphries and thought, "DAT RONDO is fucking fantastic....if only for one thing...."

Like, ever.

There is literally nothing about him that fits
well with New York City.

Its weird, New Yorkers will tell you--he's not a presence
in NY AT ALL. Zero. Unlike Jeter who is Mr. New York.

Eli is underrated when he wins and loses here in NY, or perhaps I have that perspective because I'm not a huge Giants fan, but Eli isn't targeted by the NYC Sports media crosshairs as much as a two time Superbowl winning quaterback playing for NYC should be considering how poorly he tends to play at times.

Tebow's a pretty bad fit too. He likes the attention and all, but I think he thought his faith would be a bigger deal in NYC than it is. It seems like even NYChristians don't really care about that in an athlete.

Tebow's main problem was not getting on the field, so
we have no real reason to speculate either way.

We've had plenty of time to see Eli's relationship
with the city, and the city has boatloads of reason
to like him.

He aint Jeter or Namath, no, he is not even Gay Rod with his desperate attempts to embrace New Yorkness. There is nothing slick or city about Manning and he is not an attention whore but I think he handles the pressure and the media very well. I am not sure he is a great fit for New York but he is thriving there and taking its unique challenges in stride.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

things.

His aw shucksness is great for handling the media b/c everything rolls off him and he doesn't seem to care.

but at the same time he's won twice...so he gets handled with kid gloves.

If he hadn't won and still bombed like he can on occasion, everything about his personality would get roasted by the media.

I'm just saying that he's NOT A PRESENCE in NY culture
AT ALL

He's literally a guy who flies in and plays QB and LEAVES

He has no presence, no aura, no essence, nothing. He has
left no impression on New Yorkers. No New Yorker has ever
seen him, been to an event where he was speaking, etc.
When you think of New York City, you don't think Eli Manning
AT ALL. Not because he's from Lousiana, but because he's
just not a part of New York life, culture, anything at all
ever.

Its not a bad thing. But it is odd for a 2-time winning
Superbowl playing in New York City.

Hell, Mark Sanchez was a bigger presence in NYC two years
ago and had 1/400th the talent and accomplishments

Again: none of this is bad, but it is noticeable

Riles ain't have the guns for Showtime so he picked the only team
who successfully beat Showtime, Jordan and the Celtics

Almost worked

But to say that style of play is NY is nah

Plus, NY play isn't really gritty fundamental shit

Its rough, but is very showy

Derek Harper might be the least showy nigga ever

maybe for niggas that don't make it lol but to me ny is gritty, hard working, willing to do the dirty work. NY style could also be pretty and flashy but nyers prefer substance over style on the court from their athletes.

personification of that city, not what athlete is a personification of "how the sport is played in that city"

so those knicks players were representative of the culture of ny (hardworking, gritty, etc) not ny's style of basketball...which is why those players were appreciated so much.

which is why guys like John starks/oak/mason get so much love from ny.

so i guess it comes down to your interpretation.

Mason is NY because of the smoothness and controlled

He was a good defender but never was an efficient scorer.

That might have been a reach but the dude (who was in his late teens early 20s) said Perk never blazed. He was his blood nephew, had all sorts of pictures with him and shit.

It kinda makes sense, I mean what is our basis for his stoniness? That he looked stoned on the court? I doubt he was.

Those locks late in his career definitely threw some gas on that fire though lol.

Meanwhile Brian Grant was getting zero love, even though you know he was letting Jah be praised at halftime.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

He's basically Cal Ripken but for an area with a more exaggerated set of stereotypes in the public mind. Mauer is for Minnesotans, but he's also a Minnesotan for people who've seen Fargo a handful of times.

That's not scientific, but it's been a pretty strong lingering impression. My college running "career" was also a four year education on the differences between high school 800m runners (skinny kids I could push around) and college ones (giants).

Everytime Victor Cruz hits that Salsa I think how perfect it is that he's in NY -- coming from a Dominican dude from the BX -- he has my mom following football (not actually watching, but trying to see his touchdowns, and paying attention to the sports portion of the news).

Would be a shame if NYG lets him go.

It just seems like such an easy way to gain fame for him. But on the flip side he said his salsa dance is sacred because he's dancing for late grandmother and if anyone mocks him he takes it as a disrespect. That sounds like some nutty Nuyorican shit so the jury is still out imo. And damn near all the Puerto Ricans I grew up with in the NYC area only really had one PR parent so you aren't really slighting him by pointing out that he's half Black.

although he is a Pittsburgh area guy
he embodied everything about Chicago

i think one factor is the person has to have the LOOK
of a stereotypical resident of the area in a lotta cases.

obviously he did a lot with the bat but this was a great moment.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

This is bad. The post-season choker argument is just terrible on its face because of the problem with short series in baseball. But it's incredibly even worse in practice than it is in theory because it is used so often as "he was bad except when he was good". That's not a thing.

He posted a .538 OPS in his 5 NLDS apperances, which totaled 16 games.

When his teams advanced, that jumped to over .900 in 16 CS and WS games.

So you're half right.

I don't actually think you were trying to call Gwynn a house negro. But you're an idiot if you think calling a black man "Vaguely conservative, non-threatening, everything with a smile guy" doesn't sound like some very common descriptors of a house negro.

Toronto is a hockey town. We cheer hard for underdogs guys who grind it out like JYD, Oak(when he was here) and Matt Bonner (to a lesser degree).

JYD probably never has to pay for a meal in this city again.

I think he may have grown up there too. Played almost 20 years for them. (somewhat) Quietly put up impressive numbers throughout his career and is widely considered to be among the best if not best SS's of his era. Low key and humble (at least I have always perceived him to be that way). He comes across as a guy that is extremely passionate about baseball. I've always considered Cincy to be a baseball town (perhaps someone from there can weigh in on this).

Laid back cool. Working long hours but making it look effortless.

You can see him kicking back with some wine and cheese.

I was Knicks fan, they had Strickland, they traded him, ever since then son?, I hated them (c) Nature

Max mostly, undivided, slide in sickening, guaranteed made 'em jump like Rod Strickland (c) Raekwon

I'm the one like Rod Strickland, I cooked up in my mom's kitchen (c) Cormega

And if we want to get on some NYC style shit dude was looking good in Knicks uni. His haircut game was precise, he had the part and all that. I could picture him sliding through Bentley's with a harem in tow.

Dude started to look like an hardbody alkie within a few years after the trade.
