It's just the sexy stat.

However to answer your question, yes there is a difference at that level. When one LB runs a 4.8 and another runs a 4.4 they don't say well Bin takes 10 seconds. They say well the best players run a 4.4 not a 4.8

Think about track and field, a few decimal points can mean everything.

However football is not track and field and we place way too much emphasis on the 40 time, but at the elite levels there is a difference in those 10ths of seconds.

so yeah, not really sure what that means

other than

in a race

in workout clothes

dude could beat Jerry Rice

on a football field

ehh, I don't think so

I was wondering why they don't have them run in full pads and helmets?

Chris Johnson is the NFL all-time greatest breakaway
running back (measured by # of touchdowns > 80 yards) and would
have been a 5th round pick without that sub 4.3

Devin Hester ran low 4.3s, is the greatest return man in league
history

40 time told the story for two of the most explosive players
in league history

Same with Randy Moss

Same with Adrian Petersen

Same with Calvin Johnson

I'm not getting it

ok, fine...a WR w/ that kind of straight ahead blazing speed is one thing altho jerry rice wasnt that fast but whatever

but why does it matter if teo is "slow"

why the hell is 4.8 even considered slow?

The Tampa 2 thrived on backers who can fly

Teo's real problem is that he was already small and
was supposed to time well

better than 4.8, but i don't think anyone expected a 4.6 even, from him.

the biggest problem for te'o is that he went from a solid player with A+ intangibles to the same solid player with the most bizarre intangible conceivable.

i still blame hip-hop.

If he had beasted in that Alabama game like he had all season then teams wouldn't even care about the other stuff. But him playing in a national championship game and getting manhandled has got to have some teams thinking twice.

try catching somebody running a 4.2 or 4.3.

4.4 is pretty damn fast. 4.5 is functionally fast. if you got moves and/or strength, you can put in work with a 4.5

4.6, you better have hella moves and instincts and power and be incredibly smart/instinctive and never be out of position. you ain't scoring no 50 yd touchdowns unless your team be blocking they ass off.

on defense, if you a CB, and you running 4.5 or slower, you best be a cover 2 corner, or specialize w/ press man w/ a hellafied safety over the top and beastly pass rush. outside you can use the boundary to help you out somewhat. but if you get caught in single high or cover zero that's your ass.

for LBs, you can be functional w/ a 4.7. your 3 cone drill better be tight. you better have great change of direction, acceleration, short area burst AND instincts and positioning. you do all that shit you can hold it down inside the box.

get iso'd on a halfway speedy receiver, back or TE on a crossing route in pure man, though, and that's yo ass.

a wily vet (demeco ryans post achilles) will just squat outside the bump zone and fuck you up as you enter his territory. you don't have to have vintage urlacher type wheels (see what i did there?). but running 4.8 as a LB is limiting the shit out of what schemes you can play in.

you damn sure ain't running to cover deep middle in cover 2 versus 3 verts.

peace & blessings,

x.

To what's going on in front of you. A lot of great middle LB's have had slow 40 times, conversely I've seen 4.5 guys that are useless because they are always out of position and/or are constantly overrunning plays.

Jerry Rice ran a 4.7
Curtis Martin ran around that too

how fast do you PLAY?

i seen manti in games and he doesnt move around like a 4.8

to answer your question its like the dfference between a 15 yd gain and a 80 yard td.

In response to Reply # 0

it's kind of a big deal
arguing that it means nothing is dumb when u consider the fact the league is offensive oriented and becoming more about finesse than about physical contact
getting hype over v.davis 40 time is one thing because he's a physical specimen that can block, catch, and run perfect routes
getting hype over ted ginn jr or desean jackson speed is dumb because they're one dimensional and the speed can be neutralized
speed is a component and a very important one in the new era NFL but not the end all be all

all that being said te'o is a fucking bum
not big enough to go thru linemen blocks and apparently not fast enough to go around them or cover 1 on 1 in the middle of the field

Big, 4.8 running, Big Ten-area middle backers who play for 10 years cleaning up the run, who are nice complementary players but aren't good enough to lift your defense.

It just so happens that these guys get drafted in the 2nd round.

I think by any measure he's had a fine career in the NFL... it just seems if you need a 2 down middle backer, you might as well wait til the 5th or 6th round for that... hell I can think of a couple of guys like Dannell Ellerbe, Bart Scott, Vontaze Burfict that are fine run stuffing ILB types that were all UDFAs.

I'm pretty much expecting tOSU to run away with the Big Ten with Urb in charge these days.

I agree though, they're definitely not the athletic "blow up the play" LB that are worth first round picks..

Honestly I thought Teo would do fine in the 40 and be slow in the 3 cone drill...

he ended up doing the exact opposite

Teo was supposed to be rangy, smart and athletic
in space, could cover backs and tight ends

Type of guy who could have ended up a strong side
backer...a Derrick Brooks/Seth Joyner all around
coverage backer

Not really panning out that way

People got gassed cause Notre Dame and he had 7 picks this year but I never saw it myself. If some backer can legitimately run a 4.6, they look like they can fucking fly against college competition... that's what Alec Ogletree runs and he was chasing down WRs and RBs from behind in the SEC. Never saw Teo do anything like that... 4.8 isn't even that sluggish of a time for an MLB! Honestly I think that this point hating on him for running a 4.8 is sorta piling on. I mean you had dudes like Brandon Spikes and Vontaze Burfict who couldn't crack a 5.0, that's really a disastrous time, but they turned out to be fine as players.

I think Teo will be just fine as a pro, he won't be Patrick Willis or anything, but he'll probably start and contribute pretty quickly.

I watched more of him when he was in college, but my impression of him now is that he's a good player who's not on a Patrick Willis or prime Ray Lewis level... is that way off the mark? Poz is a good player too and I think Teo can be good, there just isn't a ton of positional value at middle backer these days unless your guy is absolutely unreal.

irrespective of whatever conference they came out of.

id be surprised to see teo as successful as laurainitis or poz. both are more athletic than teo and without the looney bird off the field shit which at bare minimum will hurt the opportunity to develop a leadership role. ideally you'd like that out of your mlb.

In response to Reply # 63

both ran a 4.82 (Te'o's 10-yard split was nearly two-tenths faster, though). Te'o was much better in the shuttle (4.27 to 4.78) and Laurinaitis was a little better in the cone (6.91 to 7.13). Te'o jumped higher (33" to 31") and Laurinaitis jumped farther (9'7 to 9'5).

they seem very comparable as athletes.

regardless my thoughts/predictions are the same based on watching them play live

i wouldve had bobby carpenter with a faster 40 time than hawk so go figure

i also think we might all be a tad biased in that the most recent game of teo's career is obscuring the big picture

http://www.nfl.com/combine/profiles/james-laurinaitis?id=79850

I don't know where my first shuttle numbers came from, though. I agree about watching them on the field: A.J. Hawk was a guy who ran fast but didn't play fast.

and the biggest winners from the Te'o circus are Alec Ogletree and Kevin Minter. Minter blazed a 4.81 himself, and is three inches shorter than Te'o. Ogletree maybe had the worst Combine out of the three: 4.70 is mediocre for a coverage linebacker who doesn't take on blocks, and his shuttle / cone times were also pedestrian. the fact he was getting drunk a few weeks before the biggest workout of his life scares me -- players that don't care don't last long in the NFL.

running under 4.4 was unheard of. we had 5 cats running 4.4 or under.

dude was 6'1, prolly 205, 210. wr.

used to SCORCH the acc.

hands wasn't the greatest. route running wasn't the greatest. never had to be. he mostly ran 9's. let somebody bite on PA, or let the safety be a step slow in getting over and it was 6.

his senior year (same year). he tore his achilles. still got drafted in the 3rd by KC. i don't think he made it out of preseason. that .15 secs (i think he got back to low 4.5s after his achilles -- which was something serious back then) was the difference between him having a pro career or him being just 'a guy'.

(mixed bag, b/c w/o the blazing top end speed and the long strides, he may have had to work on his route running and hands, from necessity, but still, that .15secs made all the difference in the world).

peace & blessings,

x.

Because it's always sounded overrated to me, when it's like "Naw he only did a 4.45, _____ got a 4.42!!!!!" and I'm like umm....the hell's the difference?

I can get a 4.2 vs a 4.8 being different for sure, but when it's only 0.1 and shit away, I just don't get it. And I don't get how OL's and even some LB's are running under 5 seconds either

In response to Reply # 0

40 yd dash typically has 18 steps from start to finish. If your .2 less than the other guy is just a quicker start, that won't matter as much for a wr or db as it would a rb or lb. if your .2 is towards your acceleration/top speed that would be a huge advantage for longer plays but so much for shorter stuff, hope that makes sense. 40 is important but knowing what each 10 yard split a guy can run is really the important thing.

the 3 days before that are spent in meetings, undergoing physicals, weightlifting, testing etc

players typically wake up at 5am and don't get to sleep until midnight

they just showed a 4.25 vs 4.31 that was a good step and a half
and if they were in a footrace down the sideline that 0.6 difference would by SMOKE

really the 40 is only applicable to DB and WR/TE

and yeah you can try to equalize speed by jamming a dude up, but thats only good for 5 yds
after that and if dude gets outside your hips,
he's ghost

and if you try to play that 10yds cushion then that opens up all other cans of worms
