"It's baaaack - Champions League Rd of 16 "

finally corporate VIPs' fave event is back today, with a slate light enough to take it all in.

Tue Feb 12
Celtic-Juve:
Celtic have been waiting for this one for so long... Here's hoping they play with the same plucky spirit they did to get to this point. Juve don't look as indomitable as they might have earlier this season but they're still tops in the Serie A. Chiellini should be back for the return leg which would be a nice boost to la Vecchia Signora

Valencia-PSG:
Finally a PSG game on Fox Sports... Beckham won't play in the 1st leg and Motta/Silva are absent as well but PSG will play their usual counter style to try to grab a result. Valencia has done well to climb back to 5th in La Liga after a relatively awful domestic start, and they could be considered to be somewhat favorites in this one (by me at least, and I am clearly 100% impartial in this judgment)

Wed Feb 13
Real-ManU
Probably THE confrontation of this round. United are close to running away with the title and winning in their usual ruthless yet puzzling ways, while Real have seemingly patched up their locker-room conflicts since Casillas has gone down

Shaktar-Dortmund
The hipster's matchup, this could be a v. entertaining one. Donetsk are in the midst of their winter break though so who knows how rusty they'll be to resume their CL campaign

I guess we'll do a new thread new week?

------------------------------
For the record, my teams:
MLB: Mets / Soccer: PSG
NCAA BB: Arizona / NCAA FB: Michigan
NBA: Spurs / NFL: Jets

they've been a lot less dependent on Ibra these past few games, which is great news for the title-chase IMO. Pastore and Lavezzi have picked up the slack, and with that strong midfield (Matuidi-Verrati is probably one of the best young combos in Europe) plus guys like Menez or Gameiro coming off the bench, not to mention Nene out of the picture, there are lots of signs this team might finally be coming together. Of course it's still PSG, aka land of the infinite drama, so caution is the name of the game

I hope they stomp MU today.. the football world refuses to acknowledge the atrophy of the epl and the present trend towards european parity -- serie A, bundesliga and most definitively la liga all have arguable claims towards being within the top two domestic leagues in europe. If the UCL quarters and/or semi's are comprised of all non-British teams (which they very well may be), any/all suggestions of epl hegemony are sullied.

we are simply the Best

you're tripping. pundits and casual american fans, alike, pay infinitely more heed to the epl than any combination of two other european leagues. yes, at last leo & cr have garnered regular coverage on sportscenter & its ilk for their respective individual triumphs; but if you think that the world, at large (especially stateside observers) considers them as anything more than afterthoughts to the premiership, you, sir, are the misguided one

we are simply the Best

In response to Reply # 15

Most of Spain's top flight clubs are insolvent and Italy's best hope is just biding time until ANOTHER match fixing drama slaps her in the head.

It's not that England is unjustly called the best league, it's that they are the most organized and do the best collective business. Meanwhile, Spain and Italy are heading in the opposite direction by fracturing tv deals. Germany finally got it right, but it will still take them years to catch up to the behemoth that is English league football. There isn't a single Bundesliga2 team that could beat any Championship team in a two legged tie.

how financially endowed the epl and fa are. but said wealth is what affords them the fringe benefits of relevancy to fans and mouthpieces that otherwise wouldn't give a damn about football. could be my own affinities to different styles of play, but I don't see how one could feasibly argue that there is better play on the aggregate in the epl than many top-tier domestic leagues in europe

we are simply the Best

He's banking it 4-2-2-1-1 with Kagawa, Wellbeck and Rooney switching who takes the 1, looking to confuse Varane. Jones and Carrick to sit in front of the defense, protect Evans, neutralize Ozil/Di Maria and play damn near the same tactical game that Madrid have lined up to play.

Very interesting. Going to be a game of breaks.

those 8 mins before the 1 min or so...MU went for defensive....didn't really go forward.

and besides that set piece goal bay danny.....MU's attack was pretty much put in check .....

MU was parking a little down the stretch to preserve that tie..compared to how they are always in attacking mode in the EPL...especially when they are down or tied....You usually see RVP and the rest of the attack take it up a notch...not here!...

they were scared of that break speed by madrid...so they sat back more.

MOM goes to ronaldo and d'gea....

you off all people should know that MU plays WAYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY more aggressive than that in the EPL....

mourinho is talking about now: that they didn't put one foot forward in the second half and that they were waiting for set pieces..and played a more contracted game...

MU played for the result...not to win

MU changed their way of playing....RM didn't

shaktar scored first on a cracking free kick by srna over the wall that the keeper looked slow to see

then bvb struck back when lewondowski (sp?) whiffed on a shot in the box, causing both defenders to fall down in an effort to block the would-be shot. It was then just him and the keeper, and he planted it calmly in the lower-right corner of the goal

It's tough for him. A striker is supposed to be the man focus of a team when it comes to scoring, but ronaldo is the focal point, same thing goes for barca with messi.

I wouldn't want to be a striker for either one of those squads, and considering that he also has to share time with Gonzo at times ...it's really hard to remain solid and focused.

So, yeah, he might need to go somewhere else....

Look at kaka, his game has gone to shit at RM...

I don't know about that, and it is more than just what goes on on the field....The attention is always centered on ronaldo...ronaldo..ronaldo this, ronaldo that....One can feel overshadowed at times.

and then he has to deal with playing under mourinho, which isn't easy at all, and he has to deal with sharing time.

and the overall pressure that comes with playing for RM plays a role as well....

I wouldn't want to be a striker at either club....MF,defender..yes!..striker, no

wasn't impressed by MU at all. they changed their entire way of playing, and pretty much played for corners and set pieces...no aggressiveness to their attacking whatsoever...

RM wasn't clinical in front of goal, and dgea was brilliant....but other than that RM controlled the possession and the match.

blow those red bitches out at trafford ...even if they hold on tight to their little panties.

I guess mourinho didn't see it either..because in his post game press conference he said that MU played for the result and didn't come forward in the second half. They played further back than usual, and were looking to get set pieces....

so, yeah, there's that. ...just because they had a FEW chances here and there does not mean that they were an attacking side.

"They came here to defend well," Mourinho said. "They came here not to CONCEDE spaces and goals, and they did not play to WIN. But they know they have in attack very important players with great potential that out of nothing can create chances and score goals."

I watch Mu maybe every other weak, just to see what chelsea is up against....and the way they played today was straight up parking during certain parts of the game. In close situations, MU with RVP always moves forward ...always ...not today.

So I don't ever want hear any fucking MU fan ever talking about chelsea parking shit

damn you niggas stay losing..seriously. ..but you will try to reply anyway

d'gea saved Mu's ass..because rooney/rvp both underperformed, and had RM been clinical the scoreboard would have blown the fuck up....MU didn't really want any part of RM's speed or attack.

yes, I would have been on full attack mode, because RM are prone to giving up goals. Just look at their record this year in la liga

Again,on aggregate, the away goals are worth more points!...so the idea would be to attack on the road regardless of what RM does....and maybe go conservative at home to protect the away goals

but, yeah, MU was shook ...I so their eyes...they didn't want to fuck with that speed. ...and RM still broke down that weak defense...dgea was just superman out their, and RM wasn't clinical.

RM was playing an open ass game, and MU should have taken advantage of that to get multiple away goals.....but again they were too scared..

Now they are going to have to park the bus even more to protect the away goals....because RM is going to be full blast mode ...full blast mode ..and don't count on dgea being superman again

...Sid Lowe has come on and explained that teams in La Liga have figured out that the best way to get a result from RM is to not attack at all, but sit back, be patient, then look for the break when you can.

And that dovetails with conventional wisdom that one of the best ways to beat a counter-attacking squad is to also counter-attack, thereby nullifying the strategy: if both teams are sitting back and countering, then effectively nobody is countering.

But you think otherwise: that in the first leg of a two-leg tie, away, in a foreign country, in a stadium full of 86,000 crazed Spaniards, against a squad featuring Ronaldo, Ozil, Benzema, Higuain, and Di Maria, a squad whose primary tactic is lightning-quick countering, that the best strategy SAF could have employed was to get everybody forward as much as possible and assume that Jonny Evans and 95-year-old Rio Ferdinand will handle whatever Madrid throws at them.

Just making sure you understand all the implications of what you're saying.

Those are single games in la liga, not aggregates. You do realize that ?

A team does not necessarily concern themselves with how many goals the home team puts up on aggregate if the chances are there for the away team to score because of the value of each away goal...And that is what Mourinho was talking about.

Also, the game plan didn't work, because RM not only dominated the game, but stayed in MU's box. Dgea's play and RM not being clinical is what saved MU, not fergie's tactics.

Now, all the pressure is on MU( big time!) to protect the away goals...they can't give up one single goal at home due to the fact that RM put up a goal, and they didn't play for more goals away

Fergie's tactics didn't work. Dgea saved them. period.

Fergie didn't slow RM's attack down, and RVP and Rooney were invisible.
MU has one of the best front attacks in the world....come on.

Like Mo said, Fergie didn't play for the goals or win....and that is going to come back to haunt them, because RM is going to drill the shit out of them.

if RM scores 2 goals it will be overrrrr..shit even 1 goal will do the trick if MU does not score.

yes, I would have been on full attack mode, because RM are prone to giving up goals.

In response to Reply # 61

Man U came into the Bernabeau with a defensive gameplan and it worked for them. De Gea was great but on the other side of the coin, Man U also had some seriously gilt-edged chances that they missed (RVP's scuffed shot that was cleared off the line comes to mind) so cut the 'if RM is clinical' bs because that goes both ways. RM completely faded in the 2nd half as Man U went deeper defensively and instead of consistently attacking down the wings against Man U's pinching sidebacks, they played right into Man U's game by keeping it way too narrow.

Adjusting your game to take advantage of strengths and mitigate weaknesse is strategy 101. Trying to argue against utilizing different tactics for different circumstances is a complete joke.

"They came here not to CONCEDE spaces and goals, and they did not play to WIN.

evidently, you forgot that when posting the quote, and I guess that does not matter

RM played to win. MU did not. And mourinho stated that as well( taking shit out of context is your style). It's just that simple, and does not need explanation

And, actually, the game plan didn't work, because RM had chances up the ass....Dgea was just on some spectacular shit. MU couldn't keep them out of the box. RM dominated every stat on the field.

So later for everything that you are talking about.

When a team is on the road in an aggregate the goal is to put up as many away goals as possible...so you attack more, and probably go conservative at home.....RM was at home, and they kept their foot on the gas pedal, and it will be on the gas pedal at OLD FARTFORD

Obviously away goals are important but you have to balance out that urge with not giving up 3-4 against arguably the best countering team in the world. You keep wanting to talk about RM's chances but Man U could have scored 2-3 as well...and that was with primarily a defensive focus. RVP had numerous chances, including the best of the game on his chest and volley that was cleared off the line.

If RM scores 2 goals at trafford, MU will have to score 3 to send it to extra time, and 4 to win it.

you do realize that right?

In response to Reply # 91

First match, Rooney's desire to make something happen lead to him getting out of position and United losing the makeup to connect with RVP , thus nullifying both players. From a defensive perspective, you want positional aware players who will have the patience and confidence to trust their positioning (Carrick, Cleverly, Giggs, Wellbeck) and force Madrid to slow the game down a bit to pick through. On offense, you have the option of all those players except Carrick slipping into one another's position and Cleverly, assuming, acting as the link between RVP/Nani and the attack. Ferguson is conceding, in a way, that they aren't going to see much of the ball and what they do see of it needs to be quick, accurate and effective.

If RVP is again isolated and ineffective, boom, you pull him for Rooney and Giggs for Kagawa and you are left with a bag of snakes for the Madrid defense to try and keep track of.

Pretty clear this team has been picked to play deep and counter. Rooney would only slow up the play I think. Plus he's terrible defensively. That's my theory.

That was a terrible challenge by Nani You cannot go high like that, no matter what advantage you think you may have.

SAF has to change tactics here, but I don't think they have the speed to do so.To play open and track back is asking too much of man u

Kinda feel bad for MU... Same thing happened to us last season with terry, but our spacing was much tighter and we kept barca out

Gotta give saf credit he gets sooooo much out of avg players....they have a lot of discipline, but MU needs more talent in that MF

but contact on a player in the box and he missed the ball? technically a penalty.

of all the missed calls, that one was not bad. but considering he had made so many other bad calls that went real's way...well...

Yeah, my bad I meant Ivan.
I was just thinking anout he racial conflict that took place between mikel and clatt while I was typing

The Ivan send off was bogus, because Ivan was tracking back on the player and accidentally clipped the player while he was trying to move to the other side... Yellow at the most.

And the Torres send off was bogus because it was off of a double yellow ...on soft calls

The entire match was bullshit...

Like I said I'm glad to see MU on the opposite end of the stick

Do I agree with the red? Nope, but to act like the ref has nothing to stand on to back up his decision is mildly comical to say the least.

Not really
Especially if mou stays

Rumor has it that Casillas is a mole for management and the media....leaking everything that Mou says in the dressing room.

If RM wins the CL with Lopez, and since they have being playing with a lot more might with Lopez in as the goal keeper, Casillas could go to number 2 or even used to bring some great players in.

Such fucking nonsense. Nani had his eyes on the ball the entire damn time, how the fuck is that a RED card? Yellow definitely, but sending him off when he didn't even see Arbeloa? What an utter lack of understanding by this ref, absolutely fucking inexcusable man.

ManU was playing so well and those players put in so much cotdamn work to have this dummy flash straight red on THAT....what a fucking shame man. I don't care who it's against, that's fucking inexcusable man. Completely unfair, has me heated man. Absolute fucking nonsense. BS.

An unintentional act can still be given a red card, especially if it is an aerial act. It was the result of his act that lead to a red card.... The call was iffy, but not a complete nut job.

MU still shouldn't have fallen apart like that....he should have pulled the goal keeper after the second goal.

Again the result of his act drew RED.....an accidental action can still draw red. Does not matter that he didnt see the approaching player.

This is not the epl.. It's the CL, where the referring is a lot more sensitive... You should know that by now

As a Chelsea fan, believe me I KNOW ALL ABOUT IT

and i know i sound like whiny, tree hugging bitch...but...there's only one thing i care about in sports above all else, including team loyalty, and that is fairness. it shouldn't be so hard, in all of sports, to get competent decision making from the people who are in charge of the game on the field/court.

anyone even mildly co-signing that call is full of shit. call a foul, give a yellow...fine. but sending off the guy who's clearly going for the ball, can't see the man coming is not intentional nor is it reckless.

i'm aware it doesn't have to be intentional but then it needs to fall under recklessness, and it wasn't. the crazy thing was arbeloa didn't even play it up too much to act like it was a bad challenge. if he had done that i could see the ref getting tricked. instead, the ref whiffed all by himself.

that said, nothing will even happen to the guy. does FIFA even do something like hand out a bad review?

dude. you guys need to know the rules when it comes to high kicks while challenging ...the rule is there to save lives

it was a stupid challenge by nani, because he didn't have to play it like ...and since people are saying he didn't see the other player why go aerial on the ball?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3q5ta-JTAuQ

look at how high his leg is and the result of his attempt

red was a fair call

you telling me in different circumstances, if a man is in the field, completely and unequivocally wide open, and alone, and the pass comes in a little too high, he shouldn't try and bring it down? just hypothetically.

You are viewing it incorrectly...High kick challenges are always dangerous regardless of
another player being in the vicinity or not.

It's the ACT that is dangerous, not the intent.

In football, even if a defensive player pushes another defensive player into the offensive player, and there is helmet to helmet contact ...fine and penalty will still be charged.

I have no problem with that red card being called on nani

a high foot is not by definition reckless. you do know that, right?

so he's being fairly punished for making a movement to bring down a ball that hundreds of players make all the time because, unfortunately, arbeloa ran into his foot? and he couldn't see arbeloa nor made an attempt to stab at him w/ his boot?

okay.

If it makes contact with another player it is.

It's like the helmet to helmet rule in the NFL. It does not matter if it was unintentional or not. The player is getting fined and a penalty will be incurred. ..and it does not matter how vicious it was

if a player makes a high kick challenge and makes hard contact with another player...that is a straight red.

players know not to make high challenges because of it ...nani should have known better.

straight red in my book.

can't do that type shit on the pitch...

i've only seem players sent off for that when they could see the challege coming, knew they were gonna kick the player and did it anyway.

seems like you're in the very small minority of people who think it was the right call. that includes people who know way more about the sport than you and i combined.

He opens up space but he cannot hit an open net.

Villa, well worth it. He had a ghastly injury and the club has been too conservative in bringing him back, in my own opinion.

Neither of these two players have won a Balon d'Or.

Realize you're comparing two players to one. Reflect.

he scores often, so that's what the headlines are going to be about, but he does a lot to facilitate the offense too, which goes more under the radar. Pastore looked average without him (he did a few nice things, I'm not going to hate, but he was nowhere near the level he showed at Mestalla).

that's also the exact reason why people ended up thinking Pato was an elite striker

I really didn't like Motta. Verratti needs to stop fucking around with the yellow cards and stay on the pitch. Also, I miss Menez' dumb ass (didn't think I'd ever say that, but while he's still infuriating some times, the energy level is down 2 notches when he doesn't play).

Oh, and bring back Momo.

very much on point, though I'm not sure if ibra had that great of an effect on pato as did the latter footballer's form simply atrophy... I am SURE, though, that zlatan was uber-underappreciated - strangely enough even pseudo-indicted - for his work and 'attitude' with fcb

chelsea is used to having calls go against them, and used to being on the bad end of the stick, so they know how to regroup and deal with it.

MU is not used to that, so they were shell shocked when nani got sent off, and they collapsed. Fergie's weakness was exposed, and it is proof that if you take MU's legs away, they have no HEART to see through the battle.....

went out like bitches

exactly

chelsea plays in the same league, where united gets all the calls. Everything favors united, and I mean everything, so they are able to excel

nothing favors chelsea, but they still fight

Especially in the CL, where chelsea is always put in the doghouse, but they don't cry ...they just fight ...continued to fight against all the bullshit against barca in 2009, and almost came away with the win....they fought last year and got the win after being down a man in CAMP NOU!

MU gave up 2 goals in 3 mins.that is a god damn shame...they just fell apart, and fergie waited too long to make any kind of adjustments...

I have no sympathy for Manure whatsoever

Great ball as he made a run behind Alves...first touch let him down competely, otherwise he's in on net with acres of space.

He's really pulling them inwards and opening up space for Iniesta when the ball is on the left and then opening up space for Villa and giving Alves another option when he pushes up the right side.

they know how to work together. Alexis and Tello as an alternative forward line that is based on speed and work rate. They should rotate as lines.

Vs those packed in defenses, you have to pull the backline away from the midfield with decisive runs off the ball to create some space. Pedro is really really good at it because of his tactical understanding and combined with Villa's dynamicism, it gives Messi and your midfield a lot more room to work with.

Like you said...I think you have to start with those 3 and then bring in Tello/Sanchez for their work rate/pace. If either of those dudes could develop a better tactical awareness, cotdamn, they'd be dangerous.

It's pretty evident that Pedro and Villa's overall understanding and ability opens up the most space, for themselves but perhaps most importantly, everyone behind them.

is that not obvious?

when teams take the game to Barca, only then do you see some success.

still, Milan have to be happy about turning around their year for the most part. especially considering the pieces on that squad.

All counter-attacking teams who have been disciplined defensively and clinical with their finishing. You aren't going to control possession against them but you have to have a concerted defensive effort from EVERYONE (el Sharaawy and KPB were noticeably less active today compared to the first leg. There was a play in the first leg where El Sharaawy got dispossessed but then sprinted back the entire length of the field to intercept a pass to the overlapping Alves. I barely saw Sharaawy track back today) and then take advantage of their defensive issues. Milan had three golden chances today and couldn't convert either of them (Niang, El Sharaawy and Abbiate).

You open yourself up and you aren't going to win because fact is Barcelona will control the possesion, get more chances, and be more clinical in an open-ended game.

No true striker with SES, KPB and Niang up front, and pushes KPB out of midfield and fucking Flamini into the lineup. No you have only one true possession guy in midfield with Montolivo, no poacher up front.

But honestly, we don't have the squad to take it home, so I'm okay with it overall. This team needs to focus on Serie A and catching Napoli. There's been huge strides taken and if this isn't the finished product going into next year, and a couple more pieces are added, I see multiple Scudetti and hopefully another UCL in our future. There's such good young talent in the side, that they need to intelligently add complimentary pieces, like they did when they built that incredible 2000s side, backboned by Pirlo and Gattuso.

But like I said, I feel like the Pazzini injury necessitated a lineup that just doesn't work against a team like Barca. We have a lot of strength, but depth is a major weakness and since we can't afford to take a week off in Serie A right now, I feel like that really showed.

Props to Barcelona for their finishing display today....defensively, they held on by the skin of their teeth. Came close to being opened up numerous times (Abbiate was given a gift when Barca had a complete mixup on their left but he was too eager to open it) and twice were completely opened up (El Sharaawy and Niang) but Milan couldn't find the final touch. Those breaks are obviously part of the game and credit to Barcelona, they took advantage.

Barcelona pressed a lot more today, reminded me of their teams from the past couple years with the amount of effort they were putting in to close down the ball quickly.

Great time for a happy hour!

Like everyone else has been saying MVP needs to be the starting forward line. Period. I think this also showed it's probably time to leave Puyol on the bench. We got caught out a few times, but (luckly) they weren't able to convert, and the backline did fairly well. I don't know the last time I say Barca play with so many men defending so resolutely! They were like 8-9-10 behind the ball at times!

293. "Wenger: Arsenal lose, England's fault."
In response to Reply # 0

http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2013/mar/13/arsenal-champions-league-arsene-wenger

Arsène Wenger lamented a "massive wake-up call" for English football as Arsenal became the nation's final team to exit the Champions League on a night of drama and gallant failure at Bayern Munich.

Arsenal won 2-0 here only to come up short on the away goals rule and suffer a third consecutive elimination at the last-16 stage of the competition. The regrets were not located here, rather in the first leg at Emirates Stadium and, in the particular, the concession of the late third goal to Mario Mandzukic which proved decisive.

"It's a massive disappointment for English football because for many years, we have not been used to this," Wenger said, as he reflected upon a Champions quarter-final phase without English representation for the first time since 1996, Arsenal having followed Manchester United, Chelsea and Manchester City in going out.

"It's a massive wake-up call for us and it means that the rest of European football has caught up with us. We have to take that into consideration when we talk about the Premier League in the future."
Arsenal took an early lead here through Olivier Giroud and Laurent Koscielny scored their second on 87 minutes to hint at a historic triumph. There was valour in the exit but it did not dilute the irritation at the manner in which Arsenal had left themselves with too much to do.

"To qualify is 180 minutes," said Wenger, who will definitely now go an eighth straight season without a trophy. "It's a bit similar to last year's situation against Milan, when we missed the first leg .

"The regret we have is not this game against Bayern but the first game at the Emirates. You could see tonight the weight of that third goal that we gave away with four minutes to go. It's massive.
"We went close and I am very proud of the performance of the team but, as well, I am very disappointed for everyone who follows Arsenal. When you look at our game tonight, we have many regrets about the first game.

"I felt it was very feasible to knock Bayern out. We had a plan that we respected tonight. It went a bit for us on some occasions but overall, we played well.

"The second goal came too late but we did have a few opportunities in the second half. Bayern defended very well. They were a very defensive team tonight and they stopped us from playing. We were under pressure because a bad performance would have been terrible for the morale and the pride of the team. The regret I have is that there is potential in the team and we are, of course, out of the competition."

Wenger had been expected to rotate his personnel ahead of the Swansea game but he picked Theo Walcott and Santi Cazorla, and the surprise was the omission of the captain Thomas Vermaelen. Wenger, who offered honourable mentions to each of his starting back five, was snappy about the reasons for Vermaelen's presence among the substitutes.

"I don't want to explain too much," he said. "I don't know if he will play at Swansea. We have to see tomorrow or Friday. It's possible yes. I want to see how everybody recovers. We will rotate a bit at the back and in midfield. It's a massive game on Saturday."

The Bayern manager, Jupp Heynckes, admitted that his team had "got away with a black eye". He added: "These are the most difficult games and you have to finish them. We fought hard but we didn't play well, although I have to say we had great chances. We should have taken advantage of them. Arsenal came here wounded and they had a good game."

He responded to a question about an English team not making the quarters since '96 and then the other 4/5 of the article was about the game.

Criticize him for shit that is actually valid.
