"My Formal Apology To Carmelo Anthony"

Dear Carmelo,

I thought last year's Knicks were your fault. I was wrong. I still have major problems with your game and your attitude, but watching Mike D'Antoni pour gasoline on the Lakers fire at every turn, I realized it's not fair to blame any player on last year's Knicks squad for the underachievement and melodrama (no pun intended).

Mike D'Antoni was/is one of the most overrated coaches in NBA history, one who would have an antagonistic relationship with all but a handful of stars in the league. Basically, D'Antoni can tolerate three types of stars

1) pass-first PG like Nash or back-in-the-day Jason Kidd,
2) stars with absolutely perfect basketball interests like Bron and CP3,
3) Megalomaniacs like Kobe who can out Alpha-male him. and Laker fans, before you get on me, I mean that as a compliment. The reason D'Antoni doesn't pull his shit with Kobe is because he knows that Kobe would first go upside his head, then get him fired. That's exactly how one SHOULD deal with this petty asshole...by keeping him in his place.

But whatever. Back to the lecture at hand.

With the exception of CP3, Bron, and Kobe, D'Antoni would have beef with every other star in the league. He'd think Durant holds the ball too much. He'd completely destroy Wessy's game. He'd play Duncan too many minutes. And so on and so forth.

And the secret is out with the way he has handled Dwight's injury. Dwight isn't faking, I don't believe, but let's pretend he is. You know what your job is as a head coach? Your job is to dive in front of that bus. You back your stars, no matter what. Instead, you can't help being petty and shortsighted, and you're tweaking dude in the media. I don't care how much of a punk Dwight is being. You need Dwight far, far more than he needs you, so you make nice. You smooth it over when Kobe does Kobe stuff in the media. You go down with the SS Howard, because that's what head coaches do in the NBA. They protect their stars in public.

So, my bad, Melo. I absolve you from blame for last year. I'll just have to wait until you get upset in the first round to have some new material.

D'antoni also likes another type of player.
ONE THAT HE FINDS.

He thrives to unleash the Jeremy Lin's and Earl Clark's of the world. Why? Because they'll listen to and follow anything he says. Never questioning how silly it is.
They won't question that he tells them not to play defense, like any seasoned vet would.

They follow blindly because he's the one that gave them a shot.

he had no other choice because his team was so banged up at that time.

i think he's absolutely the wrong fit for the Lakers but it's not easy to take over a team without a training camp with a banged up roster and a leader that can't figure out how to play with other dominant players.

Yes. The Knicks were banged up at the time, and we needed someone to run point.

BUT!!!!

The D'antoni system just cannot function whatsoever without a PG.
Now If D'antoni played to the strengths of the team, which was Melo on the post and and the rest of the team reacting to him being doubled and swinging it, or Melo abusing his man if they don't double. Then the team would've been fine.

But since D'antoni was completely lost and determined to run his system instead of abandoning the stupid system; and there was nothing going on without a PG to run his system, he then HAD to play Lin.

The reason why the whole, "Melo and Amare can't function together" narrative arose is because Amare was a D'antoni follower (ie: Earl Clark / Jeremy Lin / Landry Fields) remember D'antoni was Amare's only coach. Amare loved the system and Melo thought it was stupid. Amare wanted Melo to buy in.

So Melo wanted to play actual basketball, and Amare wanted to run the D'anotni system.
Therefore they looked like they were bumping into each other all year, and no they didn't seem to fit.
Once Amare got Woody as a coach, and was forced to play and buy into a real system...all of a sudden the pieces fit.

Its all the white media and them making Lin the model
minority, who was run out of town by big bad blactino
Carmelo

I mean, there is FOOTAGE of Carmelo LITERALLY CAMPAIGNING
to get Jeremy Lin minutes when he was stuck on the bench

Why?

Because Carmelo's ball IQ is better than Pringles'

to try to beat the other team down, so the above is completely plausible.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

Jimmy Jackson was in Phoenix, just getting there getting used to D'antoni.

His team commits a turnover, there's a fast break the other way.
JJ runs down court, and commits the hard foul to prevent the lay-up.

D'antoni calls him over; he says, "don't do that, we don't do that here just let him have the lay up. The hard foul stops our opportunity to get back on offense and lets them set up their defense, the hard foul slows the game down, just let him have the lay up so that we can keep the tempo up, and get back on offense faster"

THINK ABOUT THAT STUPID SHIT. THIS IS WHAT THIS DUDE IS / WAS COACHING!!

nice timing, dude.

the idea that carmelo is a top five player is feverishly crazed. he leads the league in usage, but has career-lows in assists and steals, and near career lows in rebounding. his TS%--which has been excellent this year because of his three-point shooting, has dropped from 60% to 57% over the last month as that regresses to the mean. he's been an elite scorer, but is average or below average at literally everything else.

not only is the man with the worst postseason record in the NBA history not sniffing the league's top five, he's not even the best player on his team.

when you cite an obscure stat like this in a vacuum, to make a selective argument, i like to show how said stat throws a molotov cocktail* on ai's career.

Then you have 2 choices: (1) admit the stat is garbage; (2) admit ai was garbage.

When you throw it back at me, I just choose (1) the stat is garbage. Problem is, you can't choose (1) because then it discredits your initial point against melo.

* - figuratively; any bottle of liquor in close enough proximity to ai would be swigged before you could shove a rag in and light it

first off, metrics do not apply to the GOAT. I MEAN OBVIOUSLY DUH

secondly, everyone and their mother knows AI was an inefficient scorer in philly. but there hasn't been another player (maybe bron in cleveland?) who was surrounded with defensive goons and told to just keep chucking as the lone offensive strategy. still, i would concede GOAT's limitations if he hadn't gone to denver and put up, at AGE 32, a TS% virtually identical to carmelo's career high from this season.

considering that GOAT was unguardable in the middle of the floor, a great passer and went to the foul line more than anyone in the NBA several years, the idea that he couldn't have been utilized more efficiently is absurd. and that was proven at AGE 32, well after his liver had been permeated by TGIF's ultimate strawberry daiquiris. so this isn't a "could have" it's a "would have."

Hasn't taken accountability for pretty much anything, openly alienated Pau, and then yesterday threw Dwight under the bus for absolutely no reason, knowing full well the shit storm that had just occurred earlier with Kobe. I've criticized and defended some of his on court decisions but the way he has handled himself off the court has been in the least becoming manner I have ever witnessed.

At the very least, MB worked his tail off and was 100% behind his players. All this guy does is pass the buck to someone else. I dunno wtf they are putting into that Italian water.
