He did NOTHING in the second half of TWO playoff games basically.

What is he going to do, fucking cry about that 20-yard punt return? He just had a three-and-out! The drive before, they got the ball of a goal line forced fumble (sound familiar from this "no defense?")and failed to score. And guess who the defense bailed out there? Was it themselves are a long drive? No, it was Ryan, who fumbled a fucking SNAP. They also bailed him out on an interception right before that.

He played terrible and he should feel terrible (c) Bill Walton.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

whether the Falcons D gives up an 80 yard drive after a fumble or after a kickoff, the result is the same.

The Falcons D was noticeably worse than Matty, IMO.

Letting the TE get open play after play, for the second week in a row, is unacceptable.

The fumble was bad.

He should've scored from the 10 yard line.

But he also put up 24 points against a defense giving up 17 a game. You can hardly say he choked.

He simply lost to a very good team. Not sure this changes his legacy one way or the other.

he had the game in his hands. Had a big lead, couldn't hold it. After all that rigmarole, he still had the ball on the ten yard line and came up empty twice.

Did he blow it in Romo proportions? No, but he played two poor second halves and there is no skirting that.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Now, Ryan didn't have those soul crushing turnovers but he had turnovers nonetheless. Altanta never got the ball moving after that until the last drive & he didn't come thru...

If one of those turnovers turns into a FG could have been a completely different game..

The turnovers didn't lead directly to a score but the sure as hell killed ATLs momentum & prevented them from possibly putting the game away of significantly altering the course of events...

Matty can't carry a 1-dimensional offense. Tony G is the one guy he has who can regularly get open...and he's about to go home.

Burner Turner, Jacuzzi, and Snelling is not it. They need to scoop Frederick or Steven Jackson until they can find a long-term solution.

Still...he DOES seem to find a way to fumble or force a pick at some of the worst times. And we all saw the shookness still on his face last weekend even AFTER they snuck out Ric Flair small package holding the tights style vs Seatlle.

Honestly, I think the falcons win that game if they ran more in the 2nd half, even after Turner being hurt

Agreed, but you gotta get first downs to have more plays to run more. Can't do that with 3 and outs, 2-yard runs, and turnovers. If they had a Frederick, some of those runs would've been 5 or 6 yards, the first downs would've come, and Matty wouldn't feel the need to stress his arm beyond its capacity (aka he wouldn't force more throws on 2nd/3rd and longs).

Law of averages. If you throw passes into traffic or against not so grand coverage situations, you better be lucky, have an amazing arm for speed and placement, or a little of both. Even with those weapons formed against your opponent, eventually some of those passes will get knocked down or picked off.

The defense gave up huge leads in two consecutive weekends. Mike Nolan should be fired. I know its more fun to blame Matt but his defense gave him no help.

the falcons on defense allowed the 49ers to control things in the 2nd half.

i mean they nearly blew the game against the seahawks last week.

Matty Ice has some issues, however this post season was pretty good for him on a whole.

they can't run the ball very well, and there defense plays bend don't break and they tend to let you hang around.

overall, he played a good game. he's not the problem

ATL has relied on his heroics all season. couldn't pull off a miracle today. *shrug*

In response to Reply # 0

1) unless you are a Saints or Falcons fan, anyone pretending to care about the Falcons enough to force a non-existent agenda about a legit QB like Ryan who plays for a harmless org like Atlanta needs to get a damn life or a hobby or something. For fuck's sake, you don't really care, do you?
2) he put up big numbers against a vaunted team that he was supposed to have no shot at and only crumbled when his line AGAIN started to fall apart. AGAIN. And there is strong evidence the INT was a blown route and the fumble was a shitty snap, but we'll never know because he doesn't throw teammates under the bus or really say anything exciting. Really, if you want to be mad at the guy for something be mad at him for being really boring and vanilla.
3) I'm sick and tired of hearing this "all those weapons" bullshit from people that box-watch, at best. Julio and Roddy are a great duo and Tony G is a hall of famer bailout switch, but they don't block, the distance between Roddy and Harry Douglas may be the biggest fall off between 2 and 3 receivers in the league, Michael Turner hasn't been good for a year and a half, and Sam Baker and Tyson Clabo are cement-footed sack machines that hand out edges like they were shitty barbers.

to smoke the Falcons. Didn't really happen that way.

And the lack of any established run game, the defense unable to get off the field and a blown route and bad snap had much more to do with the way that second half played out than Ryan's performance.

Lets put it in context for a Philly head: did McNabb play a shitty game in the 08 NFC title game?

blame IMO. It was not his worst performance in a title game by any stretch, but yeah i think he deserved some criticism. that game was not all that unlike the arch of the SB loss to new england, only where they left points on the field in the first half against NE, they couldn't even muster that against Arizona. mcnabb played a horrendous first half, could not do a fucking thing on third down.

he had good support on the ground, i am not looking at the numbers but i bet philly outrushed arizona by a decent margin. even so they didn't bury themselves, mcnabb and company had a helluva second half but, again, in the end they had the ball with a shot to win and didn't. that was a recurring theme with mcnabb. while he didn't play a "bad" game, he sure as shit played a BAD half and then didn't get it done at the end.

mcnabb had a small lead at one point. ryan was dealing from a position of much more strength. he also turned it over twice at critical points, which mcnabb didn't. i think he had an interception in the game but i am having a hard time remembering it clearly.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

and the falcons have the best receiving corps in the league.

That team is LOADED on offense, so I can't say Ryan ain't got more than enough to win big.

For some reason, the team gets bogged down offensively in third quarters, game after game. Everything about that offense gets tight in 3rd quarters, which is weird as fuck considering how well they perform late in games.

Oddest shit ever.

And the line did start to crumble in the second half, again. It's really just not a very talented set of dudes. If a back like Jacquizz can just get some help getting outside, he'd be far more lethal than the up-the-gut crap they default to in order to suit Turner's dominant potential (last seen in 2010). you know the first three options everytime there is a passing play, and we saw yesterday that the backs can't catch a swing and Harry doesn't scare anyone.

The falcons have two #1 receivers, and the prototype of the modern TE.

Their passing game has literally NO weaknesses.

^weakness

Roddy's hands can be a weakness on the right/wrong day; Tony's old legs can be viewed as a weakness if you need a downfield threat like, say, when you have to go 60 yards in the last play of a game; Jacquizz dropped three swings yesterday that I can remember, that's a major weakness.

Point is, there isn't a lot of depth. That's what happens when you put a lot of money in your #1 and #2 WRs, an aging and under-performing RB and throw a boatload of cash at what used to be (and turned into again yesterday) a troubled secondary. I could spend a day ranting about DeCoud, but trying not to.

And if your tight end is what makes your receiving corp elite, his range has be in question. A dude like Jimmy Graham can get downfield if he has to. Tony just can't.

HD getting single coverage because of the adjustments they made on 11 and 84 at halftime, he's got a corner that (depending how you want to look at it) fell down or HD pushed down and nothing else between him and glory and what does he do? Trips over his own feet and barely manages to somehow catch a ball that could also easily have been a drop. The point is, when a team has the talent and discipline to shutdown Roddy and Julio, HD is a horrible third option down field.

I am definitely not buying that Ryan was overmatched or does not have a good offense. I am not saying he had the Greatest Show on Turf, but yes, he has talent around him.

I mean, fuck, how much was he ever pressured yesterday? Your line is your No. 1 variable/support.

Look at the way Brady, Peyton, and Rodgers fizzled out of the playoffs. Shit, Brees didn't even MAKE the playoffs.

So it's not like being an elite QB means that everything looks peachy even when you lose.

They scored 24 in the 1st half including a 7 during the 2 minute drill. That's efficiency fo you ass..

Even though SF made adjustments, that wasn't necessarily the cause of Ryan's turnovers esp the fumble. If you score 24 in the 1st half you gotta do better than a goose egg in the 2nd half.. You just do...

and the run game was shit for atlanta, they lost to be a better team (week before they beat a better team barely) atlanta's big plays, easy schedule and numerous close regular season wins have consistently masked a team that has an average defense and an average running game

they got TORCHED. they gave up four touchdowns, it happens all the time. they never let SF come close to pulling away. they came up with that goalline stand to preserve the lead. people are talking like they had the worst performance of the playoffs or something. it was a little streaky but adequate. they gave themselves multiple chances to win.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Matt did his thing this postseason. I don't
fault him at all. You put up 24-30 pts and you
will/should win most games. Can't fault him for that.
The fumbled snap was a very unfortunate turn for an otherwise
OUTSTANDING game against a top 3 defense.

Overall, this was a good year for us.

We didn't reach the goal we set out to accomplish
but we still had a great season. I'm proud of this squad
and we are inching closer and closer to what we want.

The window isn't closing. Most of our talent is young
on both sides of the ball and we have a very disciplined
and well coached (for the most part) team.

Revamp the running game, get our TE for the future,
maybe look to another MLB in FAgency and resign William Moore.

We should be in a position to compete for championships
over the next three years at least.

I'm ridin with the squad. We gon be alright.

Had the Falcons got a PI on the 4th down play by Bowman (and make no mistake that could have easily gone either way) there's a good chance the Falcons get in the end zone without enough time for Kaepernick and the 9ers to answer. Today you would have had everyone talking about Ryan's toughness for staying in with a separated shoulder and leading his team back twice in two weeks... we'd be having the 'elite' convo today about Ryan like some are doing with Flaco... all turning on one call that could have been made.

Shows just how ridiculous some of these conversations are in the first place.

Wins and losses dictate opinions far beyond anything that is logical. It is soooo crazy that a SB win of any kind gives a QB an outrageous amount of leeway. Yes, this is the beginnings of a Tom Brady (basically .500 in the playoffs the last 8 years) and BOTH Mannings hate post...

Which was most certainly a huge play and he admittedly said he took his eyes off the ball. The int certainly looked like a miscommunication on a route, that happens.

Considering the defense he was playing, he played absolutely tremendous. The windows he was throwing into, the anticipation, taking shots in the 4th but sticking in the pocket to complete throws...he was great.

It looks like he threw at Roddy in hopes of getting attention for the contact that was going on and getting a call, which was a miscalculation because they were within 5 yards of the line, the refs were allowing a far more physical game in the 2nd half and, really, you can't put your season in the hands of an officials judgement. Roddy admitted to basically all this post game. Growing moment.
And the fumble still was a not-great snap that he took his eye off of.

Bowman was basically in the spot White ran too... Bowman makes contact at 4 yards and starts to move to his right with White... Ryan waits for White to clear Willis who was in the passing lane during the time the contact was happening... As Ryan throws the ball, Bowman takes both hands off of White... Bowman bats down the ball with his left hand which means the pass was behind White a little... at the same time you clearly see Bowman's right hand off White. Basically it was a bad decision and bad pass... still wouldn't have shocked me to see a flag there.

You moved the goalposts so many times on just why it is you don't like or even care about Ryan that you should just sit down and be miserable at this point. Starting to reach bentagin/all stah status. He won a playoff game (your last horrible criteria). Go back to living miserably.

calling them the best in football is laughable

but we didn't lose because of them or Matt.

the defense didn't hold up their end of the deal
in the 2nd half.

But you are typing like you didn't even watch the game, which wouldn't be surprising.

Mike Smith plays numbers and knows that a defense sitting deep dime in prevent isn't a chuck-and-hope situation, especially with a QB who's mechanics are compromised by a separated shoulder.

Weak-armed Matt Ryan hung up far better numbers than "elite arm" Rodgers did against the same team the week before.

But fuck, you have Stafford and Cutler as top 15 QBs (and in this post you're saying Atlanta's line is "the best in the league), so what the fuck do you know about anything?

Rodgers has receivers and no line.

I would trade you everything else straight up besides QB.The Packers would have made the SB,the Packers would have been 5-11 at best

you may like the game and then be able to rethink your love of Jay Cutler, Matt Schaub, Tony Romo and someone called "Vick" that made your top 10 active QB list earlier this year. Christ, what an mess that all ended up being, huh?

aka all ^^^^^^that shit shows you don't know what you're talking about. Atlanta's line gives Ryan just barely enough time to get the ball away, often to crosses, and he still got hit 80+ times this year. The line also had it's fair share to do with the awful total of 1400 total rushing yards. But this is all a bit nuanced for someone that doesn't watch football.

Can we go back to your "everyone thinks he sucks" argument? For an "everyone thinks he sucks" guy, he made his second probowl roster while not being in the top 5 in fan votes for his position. Again. Which means the players and coaches, who likely know a little something more than you, sure do think highly of him.

But not here.

Matty played great. He simply lost to a better team and against one of the best defenses the NFL has seen in about 15 years or so.

No.They're a very good defense, but their playoff wins were playing a team with no offensive line and allowing 24 points, and a team led by Matt Ryan scoring 24.

They're nowhere near last 15 years best

7 of those came vs a prevent when the game was decided... and this was Justin Smith's first game back with the brace. He looked at about 80%.

>They're nowhere near last 15 years best

But I do agree there have been better during this time... I'd put them in the top 5 though.

Baltimore pick a year between 2006-2010 and maybe even Seattle's this year were better.

But this is a damn good group when they can pin their ears back. That's why they beat the Packers. The Packers O-Line is fucking awful and the Smiths coming off the edges ran right through our turd Tackles and Guards

As good and deep as their secondary is, their front 7 ain't seeing the 9ers front 7. Clemons is nice but I'd rather have the Smith brothers... then Bowman & Willis in the middle... naw they ain't quite on that level yet

I'd take exception with the 09' Vikings too

But the rest of your list looks about right to me

Their body of work over the past 2 years makes them one of the better defenses we've seen in the past 15 years or so.

Which years of those teams are you referring to?

So yeah, SF is one of the 4-5 best defenses of the past 15 years. Or let's say, since 1999/2000. The Brady/Manning era.

BAL, PIT, TB and CHI.

All defenses that were good enough to dominate and make super bowls without good offenses.

I have SF in that category.

Their offense is the reason they beat the Packers.

And of course you're not gonna give NYGz or Pats any love. But Pats 04,NYGz 07 and Minnesota's 09 I would say were all better. The Giants stopped the greatest offense ever, the Pat's carried Brady to his third and were dominant, and the Vikes were killing people and would have won the Chip except for Favre.

Throw in some of those 2000-2001 Ravens and scattered Steelers D's and thats your top 5.

Are they top 20 of the past 15? Absolutely.

as I said, one of the better ones we've seen recently.

Matt Ryan leading an offense to 28 points and 400 yards passing, plus a fumble and INT, does not mean he is not an elite QB.

Brady/Manning/Brees/Rogers?

No.

The next tier right below that?

Unquestionably.

In response to Reply # 101

Plus we really have no idea how good these young guys will be.

I would say he's leading the generation of guys that no one will remember.

You have the old guys:

Brady
Brees
Manning

The middle or end of their prime guys:

Rodgers
Roethlisberger
Eli
Cutler

The nebulous guys:

Ryan
Flacco
Schaub

And then we have the really young guys who we don't know yet:

RG3(Hopefully he can come back)
Cam
Freeman
Luck
Wilson
Kaepernick

That's just a pile of QB's from all over that I'm not really sure how to order.

I will say once Brady and Manning go,it will be a complete free for all in the AFC.

Cutler is at least one tier too high. Maybe two.

I put Ryan 1 tier higher. Flacco and Schaub are not seeing Ryan.

Ryan had an incredible year this year. If he does it again for another couple years, which I fully expect him to, he'll cement himself in that 2nd tier.

i mean in large part this was a dig at money man (perhaps i should have replied to myself 65 times to be more clear) but now i am hearing some hog wash in here. he played a great first half. he did not play anywhere near great in the second half.

that is like a boxer winning the early rounds and then getting knocked the fuck out.
