"Poll question: Te'o: Victim or Perpertrator"

I know we've got a bunch of Te'o posts, but don't we need a poll to see what people think? I am curious how many people think he perpetrated, versus how many people think he's the extremely gullible victim of a con job

Poll result (47 votes)
He got took (7 votes)Vote
He deed it (c) FSC (34 votes)Vote
Fucking Lance rolls a 7 AGAIN. (6 votes)Vote

Jan 17th 2013

Well, it all depends on his motive to lie. Which is still unclear.

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

The character and intelligence thing was supposed to supposed to be what boosted him above the pack, but you can't say he's exceptional at that anymore. You think an NFL defensive squad, most of whom are legitimately crazy to begin with, aren't gonna give this guy a bunch of shit or have a hard time listening to him after they saw him cry alligator tears about his fake dead girlfriend?

I think when it all shakes out, he ends up in the 2nd round. People who were putting him in the top 10 were putting him too high to begin with, the only middle backers who get drafted in the 1st these days are guys like Kuechly, Cushing, Mayo who are all better athletes and can stay on the field three downs (the one exception recently being Rolando McClain, another headcase who is a huge bust, but that is an Al Davis pick). 2nd round is right around where teams will take chances and also where the run stopping backers like Posluszny and Laurinitis go.

I would LOVE to see how the NFL personnel guys are gonna grill him at the Combine, unlike the media those guys truly give no fucks (ask Dez Bryant).

Really depends what comes out when teams are able to interview this guy. If they think the guy is legitimately unreliable, he could drop like a rock. Like one NFL exec said "We'll draft criminals, but lie to my face and you're off our board."

Pretty much everyone who plays on an NFL defense is crazy already, for real. Could you imagine if Baltimore drafted him to replace Ray Lewis? Those dudes would eat him alive.

If he was on my team I'd consider moving him to a lower pressure position like weakside backer.

8. "At bare minimum, he was PARTIALLY complicit."
In response to Reply # 0

Worst case scenario, he was complicit from the jump due to publicity. Which is disgraceful and awful.

Or he was complicit in a fake relationship to cover up his homosexuality that then spun hopelessly out of control. Which is sad and quite a shame but is far more understandable.

Or he was complicit in continuing to perpetrate a hoax after he was initially duped by someone who catfished him, solely out of shame. Which is somewhere between the previous two.

But he lied to his father, telling him that he met this girl.
He talked about her publicly after receiving this alleged call in which he realized it was a hoax.
He told ESPN that she was the most beautiful girl he ever met.

There are obvious discrepancies which point to a cover-up that Te'o was complicit in his involvement with. His motive is unclear, so it's not obvious why he was complicit or how much of this is his concoction.

But he definitely lied and perpetrated that lie to the public, whether it's out of embarrassment or something more nefarious.

He lied and embellished his relationship to avoid being ridiculed for falling for a person he had never met face to face.
He was probably worried that people would judge him for someone he never actually met, and by the looks of peoples reactions, he was right.

... then that's perpetrating. He told the media at a pre-Heisman even on Dec. 8, two days after the alleged phone call in which he discovered it was a hoax, that cancer took the life of his grandmother and his girlfriend.

That's textbook perpetrating after the fact. Simply can't be defended.

That's just one example, and a damning one. It doesn't even touch upon the number of holes in what he's told family and the press beforehand.

A lie is a lie. Even if he did it out of shame of an online relationship or shame of something else, it's still lying to the press.

All that is currently clear is that he has definitely lied. Which casts his entire explanation of the scenario into doubt. So more facts need to come out.

He saw the media loved this story and didn't want to deny them the opportunity to write about it. Saying "I don't want to talk about that at this time" is the easiest thing in the world. But he volunteered a reference to her... after he knew it was a hoax.

there's just too much information

I hope the initial reporters at deadspin try to uncover some old interviews, etc...

that will at least implicate that he lied

That's simply a fact. He is on record lying.

If it IS a hoax, then this Ronaiah guy, who is clearly in cahoots with it somehow, could actually shed some light on the behind-the-scenes.

Granted, the conspiracy levels are starting to reach Truther status, but between the conflicting dates on the timeline for EVERYTHING (the car crash, the death, etc.) and this video, it's tough to see how he wasn't complicit from an earlier point.

He talks about his last letter from her coming before the Stanford game... which was a month after her "death."

Oh yeah, I'm going on the assumption that he found out when she "died" or soon after. In that case he probably did receive that call/text and is using that as his "That's when I found out" excuse. Even though that admits that he lied, it would be a bit more understandable given how long it had gone on and the nature of the call.

I doubt he's gonna forget that date. Someone he actually loves *did* die. And he'd have to be a really shitty liar to forget they both happened at once.

So it's likely that he forgot what order he played who. Or he's lying. I dunno.

There's five different dates of death, and the order of death between the gf and grandmother was also inconsistent, but it seemed more like one media member getting it wrong and then others following suit rather than the Te'o family screwing it up.

right, 6 hours is pretty brief, albeit not impossible. and it would certainly support the theory of his involvement as he would've realized he could get rid of the fake gf on the same day, milk the grief w/o people looking too much into the specifics, have a football game on the day of her funeral and say it was her wish that he play. but i'm more wondering where did the first report that the gf died before the grandmother come from? if the te'o family never said that (and i don't think they'd go through the trouble of correcting every little detail) then it's still possible he found out later.

within the timeline of events (rather than learning everything all at once, like we're doing) it makes perfect sense that his dying girlfriend would write him letters in advance for games she wouldn't live to see.

If you watch The Big C, when Kathy thought she was dying, she bought a whole storage locker full of future presents for her teenage son.

(unless the girl really did somehow exist and is now dead)

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

As RJCC said in another thread, "smart" people fall for the Wealthy Nigerian Businessman scam all the time. Or get catfished. It happens.

Don't get me wrong, I certainly believe at some point he knowingly started lying about this whole thing. The absolute latest was after her "death" when he started telling the press about how he'd met her and how she visited Hawaii (though I believe he was probably in on it earlier than that). But I can buy than when this whole thing first started, he was duped.

the star player on a historic college football program's return to greatness

is not thirsty

this isn't joe the mechanic being duped into thinking he's chatting online with Ms America

for 3 years?

the professional sports organizations all have rookie symposiums about possible pitfalls

like groupies, etc...

i'm sure somebody had that conversation with this kid long before this

shit, I got that talk in HS, and I never had aspirations of being a college athlete

let alone pro

nah, this all smells like bullshit

he can play dumb

but just like the initial bullshit story fell apart

this dumb defense will fall apart too

could you imagine being his father or friend, etc...

Hey Manti, you meet that chick yet

you know the one that you're in love with and we haven't met yet

even though you've known her for 3 years

c'mon

If he's serious about it, his pool of women is small as fuck.

As for the smart/dumb thing: Stephen Hawking stayed for years with a woman that chopped him up. Emotions are a great equalizer when it comes to assessing things intelligently.

Te'o wouldn't have to be dumb to fall for this. Just willing to run with his emotions.

Or he could be lying. I NEED ANSWERS!!

so if they mentioned "groupies" and he's not really into that and is just looking for a relationship i can see it. although to your point i'd believe it more if he was a college freshman rather than a senior. even if you're naive and not heavily involved in the party culture or whatever, your world view is still bound to expand in those 4 years.

I'm using groupie as a general term for a woman trying to get something from him

based on his status as a potential NFL player

we're suppose to believe that this relationship got serious before the start of this year

I would think someone with his potential for an NFL career would proceed with caution

or at least, be advised to proceed with caution by those around him

especially if this was just a remote relationship

but can you imagine if this happened in the NFL

I would think his motive for publicity is easier to believe than being duped

why would someone perpetrating a hoax kill off the girl?

when he's on the verge of being multi after the draft

it would be so easy to just keep up the hoax

and extort him once he's in the NFL

hey Manti, I'm having trouble paying for my cancer treatment

could you spot me a mil or 2

In response to Reply # 68

I understand your point, but given how popular someone like him is it's pretty common to avoid public interactions if you're afraid people will take advantage of you. The people he was warned about may have showed up in his real life (and he may have only been warned about real life interactions), then he found something that seemed very genuine online, is somewhat embarrassed that it is an online relationship, and hides it from most people so there weren't many to point out warning signs. Given how religious his family is, they may have also been naive and trusting as well, so they might not recognize the warning signs.

I'm not saying this is the explanation that makes the most sense, that's probably the secretly gay and concocted the whole thing theory, but i think there's still a case to be made for the "being naive and then finding out later and using it to his advantage" theory.

...believed was true? That's outside the realm of possibility? Really?

Again, I don't necessarily believe that he was duped for the entire three years, though it is possible. It's not like he was talking her up to the media before she "died"; for most of three years, she could have been that girl he was in love with that he met through Twitter. But even if he figured it out/was in on it earlier, you can't say that it's not possible that he was fooled for at least a little while. A month, hell, even a year is possible.

Two days after he learned it was fake, he did an interview referencing his girlfriend.

http://www.buzzfeed.com/andrewkaczynski/two-days-after-manti-teo-knew-it-was-a-hoax-he-sp

And that's the most suspect thing about all of this. Te'o and ND knew and instead of getting out in front of the story, they decided to keep playing along. If you're going to play the "I got duped. I'm crushed. I'm so sad I can never trust again" card, you better be the one that let's the cat out of the bag and not wait for the ruse to get uncovered by someone else.

He also allowed the South Beach Tribune to write an almost entirely fictional account of their relationship (saying they met at the Stanford game, his brother quoted as saying she visited him in Hawaii, mentioning Te'o skyped with his coach but we're supposed to believe he never skyped with his girlfriend.) and the rest of the media ran with the details in that story.

Obviously, this type of shit happens and there's no reason it wouldn't happen to a college football player but even if Te'o isn't to blame for starting it, he is partially at fault for letting it balloon into what it has become.

http://www.museumofhoaxes.com/hoax/weblog/permalink/victorias_secret_basketball_prank/

Here's a prank that definitely rates as one of the more inventive (and cruel) student pranks of recent years. The set-up occurred a week before a NCAA game pitting UC Berkeley against the University of Southern California. USC's starting guard, Gabe Pruitt (pictured), met a UCLA coed named Victoria online. They traded messages via AOL Instant Messenger. She sent him her picture. He sent her his. They arranged to meet after the game on March 4.

The sinker occurred during the March 4th game. When Pruitt appeared on the court, UC fans started to chant "VIC-TOR-IA, VIC-TOR-IA." Their chants continued throughout the game, escalating to include the recitation of Pruitt's phone number. Transcripts of Pruitt's IM chats with "Victoria" were also circulated throughout the crowd (including classic lines such as "You look like you have a very fit body... Now I want to c u so bad"). Pruitt was visibly shocked, missed a bunch of free throws, and ended up 3-for-13 from the field.

It turned out that "Victoria" didn't exist. She was the fictional creation of a couple of UC fans. Pruitt had been punk'd. Understandably, some USC fans aren't too happy about the prank. (So are they plotting revenge?) (via Deadspin and Schneier on Security)

By coincidence, a similar prank was in the news last week (though it was far creepier and more disturbing in its implications). Five boys created an online profile of a fictitious 15-year-old girl they called "Jessica." To their surprise, a 48-year-old guy contacted "Jessica" and started to chat her up. The five boys played along, and eventually lured the guy into meeting Jessica in real life. But when the guy showed up for the meeting, it was the police, not Jessica, who were waiting for him.

Both these incidents go to show that you never really know who you're talking to on the internet. Or as Reality Rule 6.3 from Hippo Eats Dwarf states: "On the internet, nobody knows you're a dog." (It makes more sense if you see the cartoon it refers to.)

I actually felt bad for Gabe when it happened, but he took the L and moved on. Unlike this other Teo, who took an L and then played up and propagated this sob story for the attention.
