*a legendary (now infamous) coach turned a blind eye to child rape, and encouraged it continue by allowing a pedophile assistant coach to continue being around young children for YEARS after the matter...
*a head coach at one of the supposed bastions of integrity in CFB (chortle) sends a kid to his death by being negligent, and engages in one of the greatest hoaxes in sports history just to get him a Heisman/publicity...

if we take the ND side at face value and assume everything is 100% true and Teo didn't even embellish anything, he's just a victim, he's what? the stupidest most trusting idiot on the face of the earth?

it's like telling real life friends that you know okps "through mutual friends"
the not going to the funeral is believable, it was on a gameday, and he believed that she told him to keep playing in her memory. Ditto for the car accident. She's allegedly in California, and he's in Indiana. It's understandable for him to just be getting updates by phone once he learns she's gonna make it.
there are certainly parts of this that are sketchy, but those three things I think are pretty believable. keep in mind also that the person he's actually talking to is going to take every opportunity to say "nah, that's okay, you don't have to come out here to see me after the accident. I'll be fine. stay with the team."
