Will the few remaining loyalists still cling to the "but look at his charity work!" plea?

More than the doping, I want to see him apologize for the way he treated everyone who dared tell what he now admits is the truth. However, history has shown us that Lance is extremely selfish and calculated in his actions, and I imagine that he's ensured that he won't have to go beyond the doping admission and acknowledge the fact that he willfully ruined lives to protect his empire.

There has been 15 years of lies and denials. After his Tour wins were stripped, he still claimed to be clean. He even fucking twitpic-ed a picture of him chilling on his couch surrounded by framed yellow jerseys! The denials were so recent and loud that I have a hard time believing this will be a full mea culpa. Obviously, the biggest deal here is the admission, so I can see O letting him off the hook on the other stuff in exchange. Hell, he might even claim he won the first one clean, and just HAD to dope to keep up with the riders who were trying to catch up him. Regardless, his ego is huge and lying has always been his solution, so I expect him to admit to doping so that he can spin whatever narrative around it that he feels best suits his interests going forward. There is a for profit wing of the livestrong brand, and protecting that is what this interview and admission is about.

I'm able to separate what I hope happens and what I think will happen. It's just sad to me that, in exchange for an admission, he gets a large platform to spin and tell quarter truths in effort to salvage his brand. I know nobody is tuning in to see him look into the camera and say "Emma O'Riley, I'm sorry I sued you into bankruptcy for telling the truth about me," but I wish he would.

Did some quick googling and yeah you're right. Looks like he stayed selling products that advertised "majority of profits will go to Livestrong" w/o specifying whether they meant the for-profit site or the foundation. Has anyone done anything comprehensive on this? Seems like a huge story

It's better to click the link to get the further details of how much of a scumbag Armstrong really is. It's also a funny piece if you are interested.

http://chicago.cbslocal.com/2013/01/06/bernstein-a-letter-from-lance-armstrong/

Bernstein: A Letter From Lance Armstrong

By Dan Bernstein
CBSChicago.com Senior Columnist

Hey, folks. It’s me, Lance. How’s it going?

First, I just want to say thanks for buying all of the yellow bracelets and all the products I’ve endorsed. I really appreciate it, because it’s been, like, hundreds of millions of dollars. And thanks for not noticing or caring when the American Institute for Philanthropy reported that my foundation spent as much as $45 to raise each $100. I’m sure you understand that charity work can be expensive!

I appreciate how you believed all the misinformation about how Livestrong has been raising money for cancer research, while instead has been lavishing its resources on marketing, promotions, public relations, legal fees, advertising and salaries. It has been a very successful branding effort: getting my name and logo splashed across the world, allowing me the chance to cut all kinds of personally-lucrative deals, and creatively monetizing the very idea of “hope.” We couldn’t have done it without you.

Thanks for not looking closely at the difference between livestrong.org and livestrong.com, since any money that comes through the for-profit latter is mine.

Sweet.

Anyway, I’ve spent more than a decade telling you and everyone else that I won all my races without the help of any performance-enhancing drugs, that my Tour de France titles and inspirational life story have been powered only by hard work, inspiration, belief, and my god-given abilities.

In fact, I have used every avenue available to destroy any doubters of my greatness, and anything’s available to someone with unlimited funding, the best lawyers, legions of willing protectors, iron-fisted control over cycling’s nominal governing bodies and sophisticated methods of outflanking even the most dogged drug testing.

Cross me, and your life would be ruined. Ask former teammates like Frankie Andreu and Greg LeMond for example. I ran Frankie out of the sport because he refused to lie on my behalf, and I made sure Greg’s bicycle business failed because he spoke out against me. I even attacked Frankie’s wife, Betsy, smearing her publicly as jealous and crazy.

Talk to Christophe Bassons. You can find him working in his native France, now, as a regional administrator of youth-sports drug testing. Funny how that works out, huh? He had to quit competitive cycling after he questioned my amazing Tour performances and I instructed every other rider and team to blackball him forever. Good times.

There’s also Emma O’Reilly, my masseuse and assistant who made the mistake of talking to the authors of “LA Confidentiel.” I did what any former boss would do, and called her out as a drunken whore.

I even successfully squeezed money out of the Sunday Times of London for merely daring to reprint claims that anything I did was not entirely on the up-and-up. We came down on them like a ton of bricks, and they settled for the equivalent of half a million bucks. They should have known better.

But now I’m kinda bored, just wandering around the house ever since I made the decision to stop challenging all the baseless allegations from bitter liars and sour-grapes losers. As I said then, enough was enough. The fight against the unconstitutional witch hunt was taking valuable time away from my charity work.

So I want to do some triathlons and stuff, but I can’t because they won’t let me after I quit protesting the unfair, biased campaign against me that never afforded me the due process entitled to any citizen of this great, great country, the United States of America.

I’m considering saying whatever anybody wants to hear. I’m sure I’ll be able to cut a deal to get back to competing. After all, I raised awareness of cancer, remember? You had never heard of cancer – ever – before I finally exposed this obscure, unknown disease.

Actually, I’ve made up my mind. I’ll just say it.

I did it. All of it. There.

Ok. So we’re good now, right?

(And I respect you for changing your opinion,
so I'm not tryna shit on you...most people not
man enough to openly change their views, props

Honestly, I'm curious why you used to defend him/on
what basis were you defending him:

Did you just not think he was guilty of PEDS use?

You thought the accusers were mostly jealous?

Did you just want to believe he didn't use....because
you just wanted to believe he didn't use (personal
reasons or whatever)?

I'm honestly curious

1. For the same reason I defended Barry Bonds: people could talk as much shit as they wanted about what they "knew" or believed, but he never tested positive. And he was tested more than most. And despite lots of allegations, his detractors hadn't been to prove anything.

2. Honestly, the people who lined up against him just sounded mad. What, I'm going to side with the French, who were mad that an American was dominating "their" race? I'm supposed to side with the sour grapes former champions that were mad that someone won the race more times than they did in a fashion more dominating than they ever did? I'm supposed to side with guys on other teams who were mad that he was kicking their ass every year (and probably were just as dirty as he was)? I'm supposed to side with former teammates with an ax to grind for various reasons? Nah, man, they all just sounded mad as fuck.

3. Might sound goofy, I always liked the way dude beat cancer. Maybe because I've got close relatives that are cancer survivors, but it always make me smile when someone kicks cancer's ass. I also like the way he dealt with his religious "critics." They complained that he wasn't thanking God enough for his recovery, and he countered that he didn't beat cancer because of God, but because of his doctors hard work and his own efforts. That also made me smile.

4. Finally, I can never get worked up after performance enhancing drugs in sports. True for baseball, football, basketball, cycling, whatever. All sanctimonious crap about the "purity of the sport" has always made me want to puke. It's ten tons of horseshit spouted by assholes who pine for the time of "purity" in athletes that never actually existed. So the "Oh, he cheated!!!!" warbling never has and never will move me. I'm honestly more offended by Armstrong's shady charity practices than I ever could or would be by him admitting to doping.

I think however, that #3 is the only real reason.

To #1: There are literally no parallels between him
and Bonds/Clemens, both of whom were among the best
ever prior to steroids use

The other reasons you listedjust seem to follow from the fact
that you wanted to root for him because you needed him to be
perfect for emotional/sanctimonious reasons. He gave you
and a lot of other people hope.

All that stuff about the French and all that isn't relevant
if you don't need him to be perfect.

And this is really the worst part about this scandal:

He completely fucked with the hopes and dreams of millions
of people. Literally nobody can say that about a baseball
player.

The fact that his "foundation" isn't much of one and that he's
a scumbag who basically robbed people out of money on false
pretenses is the second worst thing about it.

That's dumb for Bonds and even dumber for Armstrong. You are my dude and everything but anyone who thought that way was in denial and/or incredibly naive. You cannot catch someone red-handed with drugs, especially in this kind of industry. Anyone who does get nabbed it's practically dumb luck by the governing body or a mistake on their part. It was obvious so many guys were getting away with it in these two sports in particular (also track and the NFL), why would the two most obvious cases around be bogus? They were both guilty all along, anyone who claimed differently just wanted to believe something.

How about his teammates that witnessed it first hand? I can remember reporting on the Tour in 2007 and people were already spilling their guts about his doping blood and all that shit. Notice how anyone that opposed him got fucking BURIED and smeared, too. Again, this was you wanting to side with him. There were reasons to suspect the motivations of the French and some others, but the sheer volume of enemies and the number of disinterested parties among them should have told you it was Armstrong that deserved your ire and suspicion.

It's all pretty cool but I think he pimped the fuck out of his cancer, too, worse than McCain has pimped his POW experience maybe. He got a big ass pile of money and protected his rep as long as he could because it kept coming in. It only took a decade or so of overt bullshit denials for people to come around. "That which can be destroyed by the truth should be."

Today's athletes have so many other advantages outside of steroids and in a lot of ways they still can't surpass some of the old greats. That just tells me how great some of those guys were back in the day and that athletics is more than just science or eugenics or whatever. But I don't like the idea of giving in to something just because it's prevalent. Yes, in baseball and track and cycling and football there is a lot of doping. It's something that will have to be considered when weighting the era's numbers just like the dead ball era or the raised mound or whatever. But it doesn't mean we have to accept it permanently. There are sports with good, strict, consistent doping policies. I do think it's possible to eliminate it from the game and there has to be a two-front war, not only testing but attacking the culture of it.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

yesterday someone said "where would cancer research be without lance armstrong???"

i told him in the exact same fucking place, since they have not funded research since 2005 and at the height of it they were dishing out MAYBE 1% of the what the national cancer institute and american cancer society do every year.

did we really need him to make us think about a disease that affects 1.5 million to 2 million new patients a year?

don't get me wrong, i appreciate the services they provide to patients and also what lance did in texas going hard for public money to fund research. but overall the dude is a hype man for himself first and foremost, and he's conflated that task with being a philanthropist.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

his handling of his family/marriage, his railroading anyone who challenged him, the cumbersome and ever growing accounts of how he cheated and how he covered it up, his public ninnying, his thieving in the name of charity, etc.

i said probably five years ago that he needed to keep his good name as long as possible to keep the money coming in. anyone who thought he was some inspirational philanthropist was only guilty of what most con victims are guilty of: wanting to believe something good.

he is a shithead and i would have cared a lot more if cycling meant fuck all to anyone. what a ridiculous sport for spectators.

A lot of public figures lie and cheat, no one really holds grudges for that forever. Ultimately, so long as a famous person cops to his or her screw ups he or she will be forgiven. Even more than people like a downfall, people love a good comeback.

Trouble is Lance did not endear himself to the public at all. He doubled and tripled down on denials at every turn, digging his heels in in especially vitriolic fashion whenever the opportunity to embarrass an accuser presented itself. He's a piece of shit human being with no remorse or true empathy and that's ultimately what cooked his goose; doping is understandable, denying it so viciously made his takedown a personal mission for many.

the reason this thing ain't live is mainly because it's gonna be viewed & edited for both sides' approval.

They're gonna both pretend its adversarial but this is really a for-profit partnership bordering on corporate-style synergy.

There's zero point in tuning in now.

This was not about me wanting to watch Oprah it was just a question from a logistic, ratings standpoint.

that's a shit ton of free publicity that OWN didn't have to spend ad dollars on. Oprah was on a couple of major shows talking about the interview, promoting it, and giving clues about what he said without revealing anything, making people want to watch.

You've got to promote a TV event in order to get people to watch it. No one watches OWN, so it's not like they have a built in audience that watches whatever is on, like a CBS or ESPN or Comedy Central. The *only* way to get people to care about an interview between Oprah and Lance Armstrong in 2013 is if you reveal that he's gonna admit he cheated.

Promoting it as a "No Holds Barred" interview adds intrigue. Will he admit? Won't he? Tune in LIVE!!!

How are you not seeing that as a much better opportunity to attract viewers??

She really needed to have her national tv channel listings with her on her press tour cuz not a damn soul knew where OWN was.

there's no real intrigue there, we'd all be thinking "okay, Lance just got stripped of all his TDF titles, now he's gonna get an hour long live patty-cake session with Oprah. He'll once again deny all wrongdoing and call everyone else liars and scumbags, and Oprah never asks hard-hitting follow up questions, so he'll get away with his bullshit."

really no reason to keep it going. this way he can get out in front of it and at least get his explanation on record.

one question I always had about dude was the connection between the roids and the cancer.... I always figured that part of the justification in his mind about doing this..beyond the competative side was .... well I had cancer.. so I had to do something to come back to a competative level. or that the drugs was actually evening the playing field because he was a guy with cancer competing against people who didn't have it...

but did the drugs cause his cancer? thats one question I have now. Was his health compromised because of the drugs he was taking...

well Barry....guess that leaves you...lol... and OJ.....lol.

lol, you think that is what this is about? the last refuge of a scoundrel is awareness and, in his case, squealing and begging to accompany it.

eh, we will probably never know for real. it was so prevalent in the sport at the time that i doubt he needed much added justification.

>but did the drugs cause his cancer? thats one question I have
>now. Was his health compromised because of the drugs he was

that seems very unlikely, he had a very common form of cancer that just went untreated as i understood t.

Do the damn thing live Monday night or Tuesday night at THE LATEST. If its live people can get active on social media during the broadcast, you can control a news cycle almost exclusively (which in this age is really only 90 minutes max.) This is a major gamble waiting until Thursday. You run a severe risk of losing mainstream interest by then and it's very likely people don't really care that much to begin with.

and actually cleans up cycling

but instead

he's gonna toe the line

I mean, he coulda just held a press conference)

just so he can get on his bike again

no remorse for cheating

in fact, the interview comes off as him trying to convince us he didn't cheat

he used his disease

and others' use to defend his cheating

he's not sorry at all for using PEDs

he's sorry that he got caught

he said this wouldn't have happened had he not made another comeback

he's willing to cop to doping pre 2005 because the statute of limitations had expired...?

c'mon

this dude doesn't get it

If the episodes with Jamie Foxx and David Letterman were any indication, then we're in for copious amounts of random "behind the scenes" shots, where we can see the show allegedly being set up, with Oprah's makeup being applied, and her producers talking to her, and all of the cameras and lights being seen, plus a random mixing board is seen for good measure

It's all very annoying
