World famous writer and director Quentin Tarantino appeared on NPR’s “Fresh Air” earlier this week to discuss the opening of his new movie, “Django Unchained.” The film, which stars Jamie Foxx and Leonardo DiCaprio, follows the journey of a slave-turned-bounty hunter who is out to rescue his wife from a Mississippi planation owner.

In talking about the movie, Tarantino got into how African-American culture was a part of his life growing up. In fact, he claimed his mother dated Wilt Chamberlain in the 1970s.

“Black culture is my culture growing up,” Tarantino explained. “Yeah, it was almost like a sitcom the way we lived in the ’70s. She was in her 20s, she was hot, alright, she was a hot white girl and her best friend named Jackie was a hot black girl and her other best friend, Lillian, was a hot Mexican girl. And they lived in this swinging singles apartment with me.

“It was the ’70s. I lived with these three hip single ladies, all always going out on dates all the time, dating football players and basketball players … my mom dated Wilt Chamberlain. She was one of the thousand.”

The host then asked Tarantino if it affected his sense of sexuality, knowing that his mother and her friends were engaging in sexual activity basically right under his nose. Unsurprisingly, Tarantino said he was perfectly cool with it and that it was fun always having the boyfriends try to win him over by buying him footballs and taking him places.

If it were any pro basketball player other than Wilt, it may come as a surprise that a famous director’s mother dated him. With how many women Chamberlain has allegedly been with, interesting tales of his sexual endeavors are not tough to come by. After all, let’s not forget what Kobe Bryant said about Wilt’s skills.

Although that subject line isn't even a joke as he's admitted in several interviews that he wishes he was as cool as black people are, this is just another QT wants to be down story, regardless of if its true or not (though I'd be flabbergasted if it is true, as he certainly would've dropped this gem like a decade ago, it would've been one of the first things out of his mouth during his mid-1990s never ending stream of hour long interviews and articles).

as a white hip hop fan, I understand his motive, but I think it's lame and bad form. I smh in general when another white guy tries to be black or sucks up to black people/culture. Oh wells. Licking black nuts: ma did it literally and he does it figuratively.

his exposure to "Black Culture" in terms of him saying that was the culture he grew up in is true.

He's a few years older than me but he lived in the same neighborhood...and we went to the same jr. and high school. For a White dude from this neighborhood to be encompassed by Black culture is not only not surprising..but particularly back when Tarantino was coming up around here, it was the norm.

now regarding his moms... Back then she would not have been alone in being a White woman fukkin around with a Black man of means round here... the divorced or single White mom with the Black "boyfriend" was going down for real in the 70's here...


its easy for folks to say that Tarantino is a fraud or some outsider who doesn't know shit about Black culture, but that wouldn't necessarily be true.

Just pointing out that many of the odder things or more off-putting things he's said in interviews over the years all stem from this never-ending search to fit into something he'll never in reality be a part of.
