Burke isn't the best player in the nation, not yet. But he's damn sure not "nobody." Both are exaggerations, thought Basa's was way more ridiculous.

I'll give you top 5 easily, I just don't think the resume supports a claim for undisputed best. You could dispute it. You're still way closer to right than Basa though.

That said, HOLY SHIT do I love Trey Burke. Best player I'VE seen this year, but I haven't watched many non-UM games at all, so...

Cook has had more difficult opponents and isn't asked to carry the team as much as Burke does. Different styles of play, different degrees of difficulty, different expectations. Not to mention Cook barely played last year, and when he did, he was still hampered by injury.

Obviously Burke has a statistical edge for a myriad of reasons. Whether one of those reasons is "he's simply better" will have to be determined over the course of the season/postseason. As I said below, once he gets into this tricky stretch of ranked opponents and tournament teams, I want to see him play and see if his numbers stay as gaudy.

I'm not anti-Burke by the way. I don't know if that's Ba's angle or not. I am merely saying Cook is not mentioned even remotely close to Burke, and he should.

You were still holding out over knee concerns while I was holding the Cook flag high and strong coming into the season. Still, I can't hold it against you-- knees with quick point guards are scary. We can get symphonic on this one.

Yeah, Kyrie notwithstanding, he's our best PG since Jay Williams. I've been happily rubbing this fact in all my UNC friends' faces since this summer. Back then, they laughed. Now, they mostly nod and look sad.

I'd love to see a Duke/Michigan matchup, so that everyone can immediately yell that Cook will obviously be outplayed by Burke, just like they yelled in vain that he'd be outplayed by Craft and by Siva... cuz those didn't work out so well for the yellers.

I say this time and time again, and no one jumps on board with it-- you can honestly tell what kind of pro a point guard will be by how they look against the best PGs in the game, moreso than nearly any other position. ESPECIALLY if those point guards have more experience at the college level than the player you're trying to cyse.

Folks got mad when I talked about it with Kyrie outplaying Jacob Pullen, Kalin Lucas, and Shelvin Mack, saying "oh, well, the best PGs in the NCAA aren't pro-level PGs." Doesn't matter. If you're outplaying the best upperclassmen of your position as an underclassmen, that's a statement that your talent and your natural understanding of the position is simply a level higher than the rest. And I believe Cook has already shown that early this season. And he'll keep showing it in ACC play.

Lorenzo Brown's size *might* give Quinn some trouble relatively speaking on Saturday on the defensive end, but if he clearly outplays Lorenzo, then I fail to see how anyone can even find a desperation plea to cop. The only one they have right now is "but... but... Craft and Siva are both short like Cook! let's see him play against someone taller!" If Quinn goes into Raleigh and outplays Lorenzo, anti-Quinn agendas are a full-blown atomic fail.

Side agenda #1: If Mason Plumlee outplays CJ Leslie, as I fully expect him to, I'm gonna be an even bigger pro-Mason asshole than I've been all season long. I still want to know where the "he's not a lottery pick" people went.

Side agenda #2: I'm watching Ryan "The Kraken" Kelly play this year like he realizes he has to be a beast to be a second-round pick. He's playing with that fear and working his way onto Dat Board.

Because folks were PRESSED to say Cook couldn't play next to Siva.

"Siva carried his team to the Final Four... and he's supposed to be scared of... Quinn Cook? lolol"

Uh, yeah, he should've been. Nobody cares about Siva's cheating in the passing lanes to get loads of steals if he's not limiting Cook's ability to run the offense enough for Louisville to win.

1) Burke =/= Siva. Watch a full michigan game and tell me there is a better pg somewhere else. I dont think you will be able to given the way Burke controls the whole game on top of shooting >50%. Not only that but his stop-and-go is almost impossible to stop.

2) if that were the case about college pg's Jarrett Jack would already be in the Hall of Fame. Ray Felton had 1 good game out of 5. Chris Duhon held him under 50% shooting 1 time in 6 games. And the best point guard on the planet right now could do NOTHING against him. So that idea is an interesting one, but its still just an idea.

I'm saying Cook is grossly underrated, primarily by those who have only seen a limited number of his games, and the same people that said he'd be destroyed by other elite NCAA PGs are the same ones who would underrate Cook in a matchup vs. Burke. I'd love to see them play each other. I don't think Cook would embarrass or humiliate Burke, I just think people would be surprised how well Cook does in that matchup.

And Jarrett Jack is better than both Felton or Duhon, and is a starter quality PG in the NBA, so I think that proves that line of thinking works. I'd be especially interested to see what Jack's numbers were as an underclassman against the hoi polloi of the point guard world, because that's usually where I go from, as one would expect a junior or senior PG to do well in the face of adversity. The better they play from a young age, the more impressed I am.

I'm not anti-Burke, though I do agree with Ba that I want to see what he does against better competition. His best opponent was Lorenzo Brown, and expectedly, Burke outplayed him, although he didn't shoot nearly as much in the game, deferring to others in order to exploit better matchups. (That was a great game btw.) This back-to-back on the road against Ohio State and Minnesota should show us just what Burke can do in the face of real adversity this year with this squad. I'm also really looking forward to both matchups against Appling, though I expect Burke to win that matchup both times.

Many of his dimes came in transition, Duke just doesn't play transition offense much.

Brown is good for their offense. He makes more bone-headed plays than Cook, but he's done what they need: get the ball to Leslie since Kelly's not there.

Cook's 3s weren't falling though. He's gotta make those open 3s.

That's all Ba. I think a kid who fills it up at such a high percentage has a good shot, and I'd take him between 14-18 in the draft.

Furthermore, since Cook is a 3-4 year player and Burke is a 2, I still expect Cook's pro prospects to be on par with Burke.

My agenda has always been "Cook is a pro, and he's underrated among college PGs." Larkin cooking him twice hurt the agenda's short term gains, obviously... but since Larkin played better than every non-Burke PG in basketball this year, I'm not concerned. Especially since Cook went toe to toe with Craft, Siva, and Brown earlier this year.

As I said above, Burke is better than Craft or Siva, but since Cook won those matchups, he absolutely could give Burke more trouble than people anticipate.

Though as I inquired above, Burke has continued his tear against better opponents, so there's zero question who has had the better season. That's obvious. He should win the Naismith.

I'd love to see them play each other. Be it next weekend or in a few years at the pro level.

I'd say calling me a hedger by finding one implication in a post full of statements I stand by is a stretch.

(because that's what he does, outplay more heralded guards when people think he won't) and be just as good as Burke in the NBA. cool, final answer.

"Cook *could* outplay Burke, or at least surprise people that he doesn't suck" isn't really an agenda that needs a driver's seat, but hey, I rarely interject when discussing these things. I'm sure there are plenty agenda fail-safes I'm missing here.

In response to Reply # 49

Or the use of the term "agenda"? Or is it just because I replied with Cook praise to a post that tied it to anti-Burke sentiment?

I started hyping Cook after the early reports that he was finally healthy. After watching him once or twice early, it became painfully clear that he's our best PG since Jay Williams. After he took it to Craft and Siva early into his first real season, it reminded me of Kyrie taking it to a few heralded college PGs early into his season. Thus, I wanted to be the guy shouting to the world that Cook deserves the attention that the others are getting, and I wanted people to know there's a future pro here-- and a future pro on the level of the other PGs folks have hyped this year.

All of the Burke comparison shit belongs to Ba. All of it. I don't really know the detailed ins and outs of agenda doctrine, I just know who I like and don't, so if this is hedging, because i posted about my love of Cook in a post in which Ba shits on Burke, then so be it. Burke is obviously better than Cook right today. Whatever that means regarding my semantics elsewhere in the post, or the implication that because Cook excels in games against more heralded point guards I said to not be surprised if Cook excels against Burke, you or others can determine.

I really like Cook. I like him now, I've liked his season, I like him more next year, and I like him to be a pro when finished. I also think Burke has had a better season than any player, should win the Naismith, and will be a good backup/sixth-man PG in the pros.

Sheesh.

but yeah, your piggybacking of Bags (who is at least clear in his opinion), eagerness to see Cook play Burke (to shut up the uninformed) and declarative if-then "agenda atomic fails" all lead to a muddled, hedging opinion if you just want to big up Cook.

I don't care either way though (and I saw Cook back when he was playing in the City Title game for DeMatha). just being a courtside jerk while learning these exhausting agenda rules (in fact, it'd be easier to give Cook accolades without all this W/L agenda clutter, but yall got your unchanging formula when it comes to OKP basketball).

Upshot: history shows that inexperienced dudes have more room to improve, so they do. guys who stay in school 3-4 years don't have as much room to improve in the L, so they improve less.

basically, as i assume we've all figured out, staying in school is a cyse.

In response to Reply # 55

It's a pro-K cyse and a moderate anti-Burke-cyse cyse.

Burke is a really great college player. I also firmly believe he'll stick.

But 6' point guards who excel in college and excel in the pros are way rare. I wouldn't spend a high lotto pick on him.

As does playing only 21 minutes.

I think after he committed those two TOs in a row, K saw some frustrated body language, pulled him, and since Thornton was kicking ass, just let his ass ride pine nearly the entire rest of the game.

because he was back playing in PG County & I bet heavy on Terps on the money-line.

After that statement tho, it seemed like he was Teen Wolf-ing the ball away from Curry's hot hand for the rest of the second half.

In response to Reply # 63

Cook wasn't the Elijah Johnson of that loss. Everyone played equally abysmally.

It just made Cook's exclamation high comedy, as I believe we were losing by double digits when he yelled it.

That cocky swagger is actually part of why I love him, even though he didn't play great-- he doesn't get shook. I like that going forward.

we don't win without an athletic 6-8 swing man...EVER. not in the program's history. EVER. not EVER. i thought this year could be different, but that formula is just irreplaceable. it cannot be done without that player, whether it's hill, dunny, batty, sing, lance.

we'll have two of those next season. it'll be okay. breathe.

Dude really needs to step his shit up. The fan fair he came in with ( i never really was a fan but I ride for my team) he should be playing better in these big games.

Louisville was flat out a better team but I need better efficiency and penetration. His time in the gym/explosion must improve this year. He took a step this year, but I think he's capable of a lot more if he puts the time in.

They can't seriously be entertaining the idea of going in without him. I assume the only reason it hasn't been announced is (a) they're figuring out who to cut and (b) Cook's agents are seeing if they can set up something better than just through the end of the season.
