"The Highest "Success" to "# of Fucks Given" Ratios"

Success in Sports

DIVIDED BY

Number of Fucks Given

Meaning, athletes who were highly successful without giving
many fucks about the sports they played

Bo Jackson has to be #1 all-time, both sports really

I'd throw Robert Smith and Ricky Williams in the top 10-15

Who else? What other sports?

He studied his craft to the point where he knew how many times his teammates' shots spun in the air before getting to the rim. And if you look at any of his highlight reels it's Rodman diving everywhere for rebounds and loose balls.

He was a very gifted athlete and basketball player and played
very hard on the court

But basketball was never very important to him

I'm inclined to say he deserves to be on this list

interesting / marketable / worthy of discussing with the press?

Along with his hair color and piercings I'm sure his self-proclaimed ball-rotation OCD makes him some kind of Zen master of basketball?

I think he cared about basketball, but he cared about it about as much I care about one of the rec leagues I'm in. Except they got paid a lot of money to do so and they were really good.

They really care about it when they're on the court/field, but in the grand scheme of things, it's behind or at the same level as getting pussy, partying, reading, philosophizing, or various other things on your priority list. While for someone like Kobe, basketball is #1-10.

Denominator is strong, though

Surprisingly, I'd say Shaq probably has a pretty high ratio

His denominator is significantly lower than any other hall of fame
caliber center

His numerator is among the 5 best centers ever

Dude was never much for fitness, when he was a big offensive star he deferred a lot, at some point he decided to move off the block and become more of a stretch 4, he routinely bagged games during the regular season and he had the ultimate IDGAF! demeanor.

Mostly because it is the sport you can go the furthest on pure talent alone.

Football players tend to quit early if they don't give a fuck and don't want to deal with all the pain.

Baseball takes such discipline to become a great hitter that natural talent just isn't enough.

That's the most amazing part about Bo too, he didn't give a fuck at some of the hardest things there are to do.

"working on his game"

like he might have spent some summers hooping in the gym or the park or whatever, but this was his first summer actually training to improve aspects of the way he plays the game.

that aspect of the game? shooting.

here's the link:
http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nba-ball-dont-lie/jamal-crawford-only-started-practicing-shooting-232948543--nba.html

After 12 NBA seasons and with a firm reputation as a pure shooter, Clippers guard Jamal Crawford tried something during the off-season he had never done before. He practiced shooting.

It's astonishing to think that Crawford, who is the NBA's career leader with 34 four-point plays and ranks 21st all-time with 1,387 three-pointers, didn't routinely spend his summers in stuffy gyms trying to perfect his shot.

"This summer was actually the first summer I worked on my game. I usually just play off of raw talent," he said Thursday after the Clippers' practice. "But I just wanted to work on something and be in great shape coming into camp. I came here right after Labor Day, which is the earliest I've ever gone to any team in the summer, and all the guys were here, committed to getting better.

"Now it's part of my lifestyle, working out and being here, shooting and getting shots up. It gives you more confidence that if you miss one or two, you know you've been working on it every single day and your teammates have confidence because they see it as well."

His game is far too creative for me to believe he wasn't
hooping every summer in some fashion

You don't develop those handles and those quirks that he
has unless you're consistently playing against someone

I can definitely see the stuff about his shot, though

Makes sense

He just quit like *snap* that. Didnt give a fuck about any rushing records, super bowls (obv not the Lions, but he wouldn't even entertain the thought of playing out the contract and then going elsewhere), or anything.

"Oh you're not going to trade me?

I quit.

See ya"

and then he faxed his retirement letter in to the WICHITA EAGLE.

For all the things Barry was, he was also a quitter.

I mean, I know the 'Serena doesn't work hard enough' meme is by and large a construction from the old & white tennis media (when they ran out of other points to criticize her), but she did come to a number of slams unprepared (and sometimes on the chubbier side of 'thick') and still won them.

in any case, her numerator alone puts her in the convo.

There are years when she was positively unbeatable, and ranked 5th in the world, because she simply didn't play enough tournaments to get the number 1 ranking.

because as a reciever, you have to care somewhat to learn playbooks and run routes well so as not to mess up the quaterback and other recievers, but weren't there self-admited reports of him not giving 100% while he was wearing the Silver and Black? I guess it's debatable with him because no one truly knows how apatheic he was while he played with teams other than the Raiders.

Remember, we are talking about a RATIO:

Numerator = success

Denominator = Fucks given

Moss had an astronomical amount of success

He could have given an ABOVE average number of fucks
and STILL be among the highest in the ratio given how
successful he was

And his ratio is certainly higher than the Rice, Largent, Cris Carter,
Michael Irvin, etc

All those guys gave quantum fucks

Randy just gave a good amount of fucks

he's a more straight up and down the field receiver than most so the routes thing wouldn't be AS difficult as another receiver. also he rarely feels like blocking.

Good for him, though

Odd career

Didn't make any kind of dent on the game

I remember him always being significantly better than average
at the plate, though

And I trust my impression because I was a Yankee fan and I consistently
remember us not really wanting to deal with him, despite him being
a colossal disappointment

but less so than Diego, because when he got hurt and then became fat, he remained a top-notch goal scorer, but he lost the ability to singlehandedly win games. He wasn't pulling those epic 50 yds run and scores from earlier in his career any longer, he had to rely on other people to set him up and/or occupy defenders. Diego was the only player defenses were really concerned with on that '90 team and he still was making crazy shit happen.

In Game 3, Chamberlain scored 31 points and 27 rebounds for an important road win, and the next day, coach Schayes planned to hold a joint team practice. However, Chamberlain said he was "too tired" to attend, and even refused Schayes' plea to at least show up and shoot a few foul shots with the team. In Game 4, Boston won 114–108. Prior to Game 5, Chamberlain was nowhere to be found, skipping practice and being non-accessible. Outwardly, Schayes defended his star center as "excused from practice", but his teammates knew the truth and were much less forgiving.

Name me a single colored athlete who would dare pull this off in the 1960s. Maybe Ali but he wasn't playing a team sport.

The Warriors and Sixers didn't really do that with Wilt, so sometimes he took it upon himself.

I really do not think Wilt qualifies for this discussion but I can see where his name would come up. He is loaded on the success side and sometimes seemed aloof or eager for a power play.

For all the people who whined about Chamberlain, they were all sad as fuck to see him go. Even guys who reached their wit's end with him were trying to keep him in town.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

The intent is good, but I think the definition of "not giving a fuck" needs to be clarified.

I'm pretty sure guys like AI or Vince Carter actually like playing basketball. Vince Carter wouldn't have reinvented himself as a 35 year old role player if he didn't like basketball. Sometimes guys care but are just dumb or stubborn or like drugs or are not that good.

I think it's notable in three cases:

1) An all-time great who is clearly great but still leaves you wondering "how good would this guy be if he actually tried?" (ex: Randy Moss, Shaq)

2) Guys who made it and stuck in the pros despite literally hating the sport they played (ex: Bison Dele, JD Drew, Robert Smith)

3) The highest level, guys who were greats or did something great despite not caring at all (ex. Bo Jackson, John Daly)

Is anyone with me?

How did he "not try?" The kind of pounding he was both dishing out and taking was massive. Up until his first ring, he busted ass in the offseason. The Lakers TOLD HIM to take down time, but he took an extra three weeks or so.

After that he had a lot of little shit injuries and kept himself on a trajectory for the playoffs. It worked out pretty well for him, I'd say.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

He was tough as hell and him not going down
easy was why he was a good check

But he didn't care about boxing at all.

All that "he loved to brawl" shit is irrelevant

Lots of dudes who want to fight suck at boxing

That's not boxing

Boxing is a science that requires study and understanding

It ain't for dumb niggas who like to punch

Mayorga didn't give two fucks about the SPORT

He was obviously a naturally good athlete who could punch
and was tough

But didn't care at ALL about the SPORT

Built a nearly adequate compiler's case for the Hall of Fame while aggressively uninterested in preserving his body. If he'd given, perhaps, a single fuck, then maybe the 6.5 bWAR he turned in before turning 30 would have improved enough to make voters to take a real look at his career. He's like the Dave Parker of pitchers. Except instead of sinking his prime with cocaine, Wells did it with whiskey and cheeseburgers.

Guy just wanted to hit jacks.

Lead the league in strike outs? Whatever.
Play for four different teams in a season? Alright.
Average an error every 3 innings at 3B? Lead the league in errors at 1B one year and another year in LF? Ok.

Just let him get up 4 times and try to hit the ball 500 feet.

Despite the fact that the Raiders are my NFL team.

Jamarcus got fat and rich and just didn't really care much about football once he got paid, and that's not the worst thing in the world (in an absolute moral sense).

Marinovich is just a dude who wanted to do art and do a bunch of drugs and that's cool too, he just happened to be 6-4 with a rocket arm and got forced to play football.

Anybody who wasn't competitive won't be nearly good enough to accumulate the success part of this equation.

Also Maxwell would have fucked every female member of JR Smith's family just for a laugh. If JR is the new generation Mad Max, this generation is sad. Closest thing I could think of would be Stephen Jackson. Even he is reserved by comparison.

When he was with the Angels his training budget was surpassed and doubled up by his Krispie Kreme budget. He was outpacing BIG as the most often fucked fat dude in America. He probably started drinking in about the sixth inning. I have never seen anyone just content and fat off a contract like he did.

In response to Reply # 161

divac was definitely not giving a fuck, exhibited by his pack plus a day habit, his wild no look passes and ill advised threes (we start calling this "pulling a vlade," the random 2-3 terrible plays a game) and, of course, his admission that he sustained a groin injury getting "too adventurous in bed"

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

those guys are big, hard-partying dudes every time out. kukoc seems like kind of a low key square, i dunno, my lives in his neighborhood in croatia.

detlef shrempf, rony seikaly, marko jaric ... varying quality of player but they all had extra BAD bitches and kinda cool lifestyles outside of basketball.
