But he gets outcoached often.

Like I'll say anything less than Sweet Sixteen with this team would be a disappointment.

I don't think I could say that about prior incarnations even if this was the guy who had Pittsnogle & Co knocking on the Final Four's door.

UM Basketball was in a mess for the longest, Amaker was even winning at Seton Hall (who ain't mattered since PJ Carlesimo was there) before flaming out in Ann Arbor.

I don't think we're the #2 team in the country because we're not truly battle tested. We'll see where we stand after this gauntlet in the B1G.

if they can get off to a solid start in conference play things will start taking care of themselves towards seeding & advancing.

is that he has actually shown a willingness to evolve, unlike his football counterpart that came to us from West Virginia. He changed out his assistants when he felt they weren't doing a good job recruiting and developing talent, and has changed up his team's style of play now that he has better athletes. We're finally a team that doesn't live and die with the 3-pointer now. I'm feeling pretty good about the direction this program is headed in.

He's completely turned around the program from the years where we'd be happy with going to the NIT to winning a share of the B1G chip last year. But we gotta see some post season success this year. The recruiting is there - he's got the players, got a great staff, the facilities are GREATLY improved, etc. so now it's time to make a run in the tourney.

junior year and we had gone to the tourney the previous year and we ended up not even making the NIT. I was also not pleased last year losing to Ohio. But I never wanted him fired.

He brought the program back from nothing, has been consistently able to coach up his players, put together a great coaching staff, and has been doing great in recruiting in both bringing in players GR3 and Mitch, and getting guys that aren't recruited heavily like Burke, Stauskas, etc. that end up being great.

The first time I've ever felt palpable disappointment with Beilein specifically was the first round exit against Ohio in the tournament last year. And then I reminded myself that he won us a B1G Championship with Zack Novak and Stu Douglass in the starting lineup.

As someone mentioned above, he's a great tactician who is not too stubborn to modify his system to match his personnel (contrast with: Rich Rod).

This year, I'm expecting an Elite 8 finish and would not be catastrophically disappointed with the Sweet 16 under the right circumstances.

the polls dont really make that much of a difference come tourney expectations

this team still hasn't really been tested. As of right now I don't expect us to be at #2 going into the tourney because the Big Ten is gonna beat everyone up. I think we will actually be a much better team at the end of the year but with a lower ranking because of the development of our freshmen. Mitch will definitely improve as he gains experience, and GR3 may play a bigger role. I also think our rotations will be better as Beilein figures out what combinations work best...we need some close games on the road in the Big Ten (and we honestly need to lose a couple) to really figure out who we are and what we can be.

We'll see what's up on 1/13 on the road in columbus.

(3) Coaching

(4) This team simply isn't as good as they were billed to be


I think -- at least hope -- it's a combination of (1) and (2).
Hopefully the early B1G tournament exit can get some rest
for our freshman. I also think UM's "disappointing" season
is overly-skewed by 3 very close losses: both IU games and
the UW game. 2/3 of those should have been wins plain
and simple. And they weren't the "oh the ref screwed us"
variety -- they were outlier fluke losses based on
uncharacteristic FT choking by good shooters and a miracle
buzzer-beater. Had UM won those 2, the outlook would be
very different for this team, which is why I'm still clinging
onto some hope for an Elite 8 run.

Now theyre probably a 2 with A LOT more expectations and the same huge holes.

In all those close games they displayed a complete inability to rebound on either end, multiple times per possession.

I think the bar has been lowered to a more reasonable level. I really dont think the Frosh Wall had anything to do with it. Nik and GRIII had some rough outings but they were never the reason they lost and Mitch has played his best the last few weeks.

It's frustrating to see the offense just degenerate to 1-on-5
at the end of every game. I also have a feeling (which might
be entirely unfounded) that Horford needs more minutes. He
seems like a more disciplined big man defender down low.
Even with his injury earlier this season, I wish he had been
worked into the rotation more.

It might not all have reached fruition, but it's very likely that Burke and Robinson are late lotto to mid-first rounders this year, Robinson a mid-lotto next year, Hardaway a late lotto next year or late first rounder this year, Stauskas worst case scenario a late first rounder by junior year, and I wouldn't be surprised with McGary's size if he can't eventually play his way into the first round as well in a couple of years-- maybe even by next year, since the NBA puts such a premium on big men. That's a very talented roster from a pro perspective, with size and ability.

Outside of the obvious insane talent in McLemore (who may not play well as he generally hasn't away from home this year), they have a late first rounder in Withey, a maybe-2nd rounder in Johnson, and a guy who might potentially play his way into the first round by senior year in Ellis. The depth of talent just isn't there.

Granted, I'm aware that things like team chemistry and team defense matter more than pro talent in the grand scheme, that's a given... but I also believe a team with so much pro talent (see: Kentucky) shouldn't set their sights low. One could make the argument that Michigan has top 5 talent in the tournament. Combined with a top 5 (top 3?) offense, that should be a recipe to be upset minded over a Kansas team that got blown the fuck out by Baylor a week and a half ago and is certainly vulnerable when they don't play on their literal home court.

(That having been said, since they don't play great defense and rely nearly exclusively on their wildly terrific offense, I have them falling in the 2nd to Havoc. So by my bracket, Sweet 16 WOULD be an accomplishment and I should stop talking, lol.)
