"Weekend Soccer 12.28.12-1.3.13: wee clubs of the Northeast"

Inhaled 7 matches from the DVR yesterday having been out of town with family for the holidays and all I have to say is poor Guzan and Mike Dean is an idiot.
Only EPL on now, so this is easy. Man City gets a big test away to Norwich and their hellish ground. Getting down to the last days of Yaya being in the side, so another loss could be it for their season. If things go certain way on Saturday, we could be looking at a ten point gap at the top. Things could be equally all-but-over at the bottom, with QPR and Reading glued on 10 points and 6 points away from safety.

Sunday, Everton/Chelsea would be a great game if Everton weren't wrecked with injuries and suspensions. Still should give Chelsea a better game than they've gotten the past couple of outings.

Then New Year's Day and Day After New Year's Day, really hard to make anything of those games, but you know we'll watch.

Rafa is doing something that I have been imploring chelsea to do for the longest, and that is starting Luiz in the double pivot. He is a free flowing player, who is vicious on the ball. He was a part of almost every attack going forward against yellow. However, he still has issues defensively, and those issues are a lot less inhibiting against chelsea in front of the box as oppose to in front of goal. ....Our back line has been like a steel curtain, and clearly luiz was the weakest link when he was a part of it.

Canaries beat Arsenal and MU, so for chelsea to hang a clean sheet against the birds in their own cage was an impressive win.

Ivan is comfy in his natural position, and Azpilicueta is turning into one of the best right backs in the world before our very eyes. yeah for chelsea!...but boo for Spain!...He is going to be another great player for them.

Transfer window is coming up, and we need a striker. Sturridge is gone, and we are without any strikers in reserve. If torres were to go down, we would be screwed.Actually, that might be a good thing, because we are screwed with him on the pitch as well......

killer B's:

Boney
bafetimbi
ba

I'm hoping for 2 out of the three, and we def need to get at least one
of them. All three players are on the cheap, especially ba ( 7 mil..wow)

Rafa is doing a solid job, but his contract is only for 7 months, so i'm not expecting anything else beyond that....

I'm surprised Donovan didn't rejoin Everton after winning the chip....I don'tunderstand his hold up. He would put them over the top.

I'm out....holler when I holler.

you would be a damn fool to think that Azi is not the future. ...

he is good as hell and he will get a call up soon adding to the talent that you already have

never said the he would replace anybody.

He is a stud on that right side, and I can't wait for him to face bale ..that will be the true test.

Jordi has the left for as long as he is healthy for at least the next 8 years, no question. That freezes out Nacho, who's coming into the best form of his career. I think they could push Nacho to the right for a year or two while Montoya gets more experience with Barca and they figure out the centerhalf thing.

Also Azi can play right back and right winger.

he has been sensational for us in both roles, so he brings an enormous amount of versatility to the pitch. Spain will not ignore that.

He will get a call up next year...you can believe that.

You hate chelsea so much, that you are even willing to hate one of your own.

we got three spanish players, one who is easily one of the best left wingers in the world, if not the best- Juan Mata....The other two are Azi and Oriol. Fernando torres does not apply.

And with the brazilians on deck, chelsea provides a great latin/spanish environment for all three players. again, frenando torres not included.

and throw in a spanish manager?

Dude stop hating talking that barca/la liga culture rubbish

also, azi is the starting right back ...ivan is back in his natural position...

stop it.

No, spain doesn't give a shit. because Spain has a gazillion interchangeable parts. spain's not lacking for wingers.

>You hate chelsea so much, that you are even willing to hate

nah, just saying, he's kinda blocked for the national team.

>Dude stop hating talking that barca/la liga culture rubbish

spain cares that people play in la liga. it's a bonus. so even were montoya and azi equals, montoya would get the nod because people in spain follow him much, much more in la liga than they follow an epl player. that's just obvious.

mata was dropped briefly after going to the epl (Torres was dropped too, briefly). did you just call torres...GOOD?

playing in la liga is a PLUS. your new superhero is a fringe player on the national team right today. he makes provisional lists. Because he's not getting covered by the media in the same way, because he doesn't play alongside the main players on the national team, because there aren't other plays to be scouted for the national team (chelsea's kinda an exception) when he plays (certainly not on the team chelsea is playing against) his chance is weaker than if he were playing for a la liga team.

smdh.

>have you even seen him play?

yes. but not recently. he was good. he's a good player. he's not the starting RB for spain today, and I think montoya (and nacho) is better.

this all started because of the following statement:

I said he is going to be another great player for spain

and you responded with some no, spain is good crap because they have someone else.

and i said Montoya's better (and Nacho). I didn't say chelsea can't grow a player (though thanks for injuring Oriol. lol) or anything else like that, just that Azpilicueta is currently blocked on the national team by one (or two) players. Montoya's a classic RB who has starred for spain's youth system and plays in spain and is younger (and i believe better). Nacho deserves national team time and is barely older than Azpilicueta. Your dude would have to really beast to overcome both of them.

you took that as a slight because you're mad.

>the Dutch made me like soccer.

I started following Spain in 2005. In before the dominance. in fact, some thought spain's golden generation and it's chances of breaking their 40 year drought were fading into bolivian after the 2006 shutout against france.

as for barca, that could be deemed frontrunning, but whatever. it's where i lived and no one rooted for espanyol.

>i didn't go "okay, i'mma claim Dutch first and foremost" i
>went "okay, i like soccer now...i'm American...USA is my
>team"

cool. good for you. now make a coherent argument why i shouldn't do the following "I love soccer and only grew to love it because of the experience of watching it in spain. I like soccer now. I follow a spanish club team. Many of those players play for Spain's national team too. I'll root for spain."

what's actually wong with that? you can't actually say anything's wrong with that, you just don't like it. it feels wrong. but that's irrelevant--it feels wrong because it's not the norm.

>clearly u think you're an honorary Spaniard/Catalan.

no, no i don't. i just don't attach nearly as much (as in, basically none) to the national origins of a team. and, as an added bonus, i enjoy watching and not having to be involved in the nuances of the catalan/spain divides and relationships to the national team. for the record, i'd drop spain in a heartbeat if the catalan team could play in tournaments as a team.

In response to Reply # 24

He's far more versed and informed in the true nuance of Spain than whomever All Stah is, who, from what I can tell, is just as cultured as his internet connection takes him.

The RFEF does value players who play in Spain over those who go abroad, unless they are of exceptional talent (Silva, Mata, Javi Martinez), and really only then after they've established themselves in La Liga. If you leave La Liga at a young age, you are handicapping your ability to be noticed by the national setup. See here: Mikel Arteta or, recently, Daniel Carvajal.

Not to mention that Montoya has actually been picked for the national team, not Azpilicueta, and, currently, del Bosque still picks Ramos wide when he has his full complement of players healthy at the back (read: when Pique is healthy). Azpilicueta could soon be jumped by Oscar Arroyo, a kid Madrid bought this last year from Espanyol as a long-term replacement at right back and will likely take that position in a few years (especially when Mourinho gets out of the way and we see, what I suspect, is a massive swing to a Spanish-centric philosophy at Madrid). Del Bosque has brought him in on a few occasions to play on the practice squad against his first 11, and he's only 19. Think of that.

So yeah, it doesn't matter that one person, who's talking purely in facts, isn't Spanish and that another person, talking purely in not-too-rote tribalism, isn't. Azpilicueta is a good player; problem is there are a ton of good players that can't even sniff the field for Spain.

You are a pigeon.

PROMO changed the topic of the conversation because he wanted to know the reason behind jersey's love affair with the Spanish. You went off on a tangent, and totally digressed.

And Azi turning into a world class fullback has shit to do with everything you just stated, and it has shit to do with him replacing anyone on the Spanish team.

two fake ass etlists who don't understand shit.

I simply stated that azi is turning into one of the best in the world and that Spain is going to have another great player on its hands.....But of course you and jersey would show up to the party in a brassier talking dumb shit.....

Here I am giving props to the Spanish, and you prop up a rebuttal so that people can hear you spew out pointless shit.

on the one hand, i could say you don't quite grasp the dynamic of conversation. on the other, here you've put it rather succinctly. yet you chastise?

AND YET YOU CHASTISE?

look, man. your hate has blinded you. so much hate. it's okay, i know you imagine yourself cosmopolitan, waking up with promo and checking the guardian's footy pages but NO

dissenting opinions are just that.

OPINIONS.

dissenting from yours!

your OPINIONS.

azi hasn't been called up! you moved goalpoasts from saying he's the next greatest to saying he'd be wearing a shirt! WTF recognize that.

your hate has blinded you, doggie.

drogba, i miss him too.

chelsea ain't shit, i know that too.

but please don't go to that place where you deny facts in favor of blue unicorns jumping over piles of gazprom gold. please?

signed, reality.

But hell, what do I know?

You guys are illiterate.

read this:

"Azpilicueta is turning into one of the best right backs in the world before our very eyes. yeah for chelsea!...but boo for Spain!...He is going to be another great player for them. "

and this is jersey's idiotic response:

"Spain's RB spot is Montoya's, sorry."

Again, I didn't say crap about him replacing Montoya. My comments meant that spain is going to have another great player, and since they have so many great players, it's not fair to the world...that is what that comment meant...

so what the hell are you guys talking about facts?.....Azi does not have to play in spain to become one of the best in the world, just like Juan has become a top class winger( if not the best) outside of spain, not while playing in spain, but playing for chelsea

oh , btw, juan mata came straight out of RM's academy.

he wasn't on the level that he is on now..

dude won the CL, chelsea's player of the year, and he will be in the running for next year's fifa player of the year for sure

he, to me, is the epl's player of the year so far.

dude please.

he went from a really good player to a great player/pure class ..he's getting more recognition/acclaim WORLD WIDE under chelsea then he ever did under Valencia.....winning the CL automatically brings that.

and his talent and play have gone way up the class ladder

you're pathetic.

just admit that you were wrong for opening your mouth, especially when you didn't know what the shot was.

take the L and move on.

Fact: mata became a regular on the spain national team while at Valencia

of course he's gotten better--he joined chelsea at 23! and i haven't said anything about people not getting better in england. good god.

if you meant cesar would be another good player for spain who might barely see the pitch for the national team but provides depth, that'd be one thing. but you said he's "the future" for the spanish team when spain has already capped a younger player at the same position. i mean, damn. relax.

Players are decent, but don't play well as a team.

Plus they are still new to the EPL. They are nothing but a championship team playing in the big league, and will get relegated soon back to their natural ground.

they are nothing like stoke city, norwich or swansea ....Now those teams
got some talent, and will be in the epl for a while.

And hiring harry just means they aren't coming out of the shitter anytime soon...shite added to shite= more shite

In response to Reply # 15

It's a self-feeding problem with these clubs that throw a ton of money at the chase of glory: you can only attract players that are really motivated by money, and if the money is guaranteed and not tied to performance, how do you motivate them? And if you are using money as the first and foremost means to attract players, what sort of players are you going to get?

What does Alex or Bosingwa or Taraabat care about winning when they are cashing $200k a week checks, regardless of performance? And if they have no shot, as they clearly don't, of winning something or competing in Europe, why not just go through the paces? They need a hard reset but have signed all those guys to horrible contracts that nobody wants to take and, apparently, most of them don't give a shit about their careers or legacies anymore.

I wouldn't say they are not motivated. My observation is that they have pieces that just do not mix, so they don't play well together, and a lot of players are self-absorbed and don't like each other or listen to each other.

Take Bosingwa. Bosingwa has never been quality. He has had his moments here and there, but nothing outstanding. However, he played hard for chelsea, and he gave effort at the right back position. Now, all of a sudden, he's dramatic and throwing fits?

It just does not make sense, so I think it is more than just being overpaid or getting big checks. It's easy for the pundits to point to that being the culprit when players who are expected to play well don't play wel....it's bigger than that

Do the players get along? Are players willing to share duties and listen to the coach? ....Do the players believe in the team's strategy and are on board 100 percent?

now Mbia and bosingwa are going at each other regarding listening to the coach and following his orders....I mean, nothing good can come out of that.

Would a player who is only concerned about money care about sitting on the bench?...So, obviously, there is some interest there, and players do want to play, but the chemistry and make up of the team are all wrong.

They have a mix of young talent (Hoilett) and a bunch of overrated players that don't play to each other's strengths. But the majority of the squad is just Championship caliber players.

Zamora, SWP, and Bosignwa are way overrated. JS Park is a good worker, but he's not going to win you any games. Cisse is talented, but doesn't show up every game, and has a tendency to get cards. Tarabbt is similar in this respect, and hasn't developed into they player he can be. Unfortunately, no one there is having a good year.

And then you have them playing that walking accident Robert Green. That boy just ain't right (c) Hank Hill.

You're such pests...now, what is it you want? In your depths of your ignorance, what is it you want? Well, whatever it is you want, I can't deliver because I just don't see it. - Orson Welles

Lukaku was able to lean on MU's backline a little bit. Unfortunately, WBA don't really have guys who can provide him with service....He came on and provided a spark, but he couldn't really get any good looks

That strike by RVP was something serious. The bend on that ball was ridiculous, because the keeper was on line to stop it, but it bent right
in.

Mu's backline is still questionable to me. Put some good pressure on it, and balls will get through.

If we do take Lukaku off of loan, it's very essential that he gets playing time. it would make no sense for us to bring him back now, only to continue to cater to Torres.

South Hampton put up 3 goals against Stoke City at Stoke....very rare for stoke to give up 3 goals in their building.

No. In fact, I'd say that GLOBALLY, it's pretty much Torres and Falcao at the striker position.

You should wake up every morning and say a little prayer of thanks that Fernando Torres suits up for your squad. One of the great transfers in history.

Obviously he was all class today but that curled service on a one timer, directly to Giroud's noggin almost made me lose it. Holy shit.

And then the final goal where he gets fouled (was there even a play-on called or did the ref just completely miss the call?), calmly gets up and then knicks it over the keeper. Incredible stuff from young Theo.

In response to Reply # 58

are they gonna pay for better defenders, a deeper squad that could contend for multiple trophies? or are we still gonna be fighting tottenham for 4th place for years to come? yeah theo needs to be paid AND played centrally but it's just one step.

Obviously can't say enough about Theo, brilliant. Podolski and Wilshire were masterful as well. Giroud came in with 2 clinical finishes as well.

Bottom line is: we have to pay Walcott his $$$.

blew three chances. .great win for us still

MOM: mata, that backline is awesome

the good: ramires,luiz, lampard ,cole

the bad: hazard

the terrible: torres.

let's get clinical. we need to work on that ..please!...and lets stop starting the game in rubbish mode.

rafa is turning me into a fan.....good tactics.

However, luiz in as a CDM makes me nervous at times. He overplays the ball, and too much aggressive tackling. I prefer him as the CM, playing next to mikel/oriol in the pivot.

up the blue

damn son

just saw the promo commercial as i was skipping through to watch the tracy morgan interview on letterman tonight

damn, y'all englishmen and frenchmen and bunchypants that wish you were really might have reason to be mad after all.

ESPN has been juggling manchester united or, to be fair, any English team's balls for years in their attempt to bring European "footy" stateside. Chelsea "won" UCL ...

Yet, CBS is going with the club that is more than a club, FCBarcelona, to profile on their flagship news magazine, "60 Minutes."

Perhaps because Barca doesn't try, they just do.

couldnt find the commercial but a quick online search availed this snippet of the messi interview: http://www.cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=50138176n

jan 7th balon d'or btw. you know cristiano has his unnamed baby momma that he paid off waiting in the wings to come out on stage if he should win so he can reclaim his image and psg and his catholic heritage and shit

That is how a striker is supposed to provide service up top.

Ba made some great runs off of the ball, and his touch is class. He got a brace in his first game. It should have been a hat trick ( franke should have let ba take the pk..come on!).

Hazard was MOM: 2 assists, and dominated both sides.

Moses and mata were brilliant as well.

He's done. It's has already been agreed upon. He is actually trying to break the record for most goals scored in chelsea history. I believe he is 9 away.

However, I thought it was kinda of tasteless, considering ba had a brace.

no it was tasteless. evidently, you didn't watch the game

Frank had just come on after the first team did all of the work, and ba, who was the workhorse in the game( dude was everywhere) was working with a brace, and the secret rule is when a player has a brace he should be allowed to take the PK to achieve the hat trick

especially in a debut game...and a FA cup at that.

a hat trick in ba's debut?..his first game?..that should have been the headliner, and frankie should have yielded to that.

No one is thinking about frank's PK ..it was just an add on ..but ba's hat trick would have been the talk of the weekend

come on!

I could go in on the fact that we lead the head to head matchups against barca, and messi has never scored against us......and you talk about chelsea being cheaters and plastic, and shit like that...the refs cheated for your side in 2009 to give you guys a victory against us.....

dude, just keep moving, because most of the stuff you talk about chelsea

thought they had another bebe?

hazard was on the international radar when chelsea picked him up.

figured shinji was just a park replacement to keep them asian jersey sales up.

edit actually shinji did have some shine, and has some flair as a playmaker, but vs hazard? even back then? nowhere near the cache

Naw. David just stood there expecting them to go wide. His goal perception is terrible, and it is one of the main reasons why MU gives up so many goals, and are unable to get clean sheets. Cech would have given each one of those a go...he wasn't even anticipating the action before hand, watch his reads....

However, I know he is only 22, so he has a long way to go before he becomes seasoned....about 6 to 7 more years....

another game for you guys with no clean sheet, and you had to come from behind - again......

that is terrible goalkeeping....His anticipation was flat. any other goalkeeper in the world would have reacted to that

u trollin with this one.

from that angle, De Gea, like any goalkeeper, expected the header to go back to his right side. Any attempt to flick but not redirect much (like that header) is the harder, less likely route. You kinda have to guess where the redirection is going, and De Gea guessed wrong. He was frozen because all his weight was prepared to jump in the opposite direction.

one can debate whether or not that was a distance from which you needed to guess a side, but that's what it looks like to me. and i'm not a big De Gea fan, but a 22 year old holding down the starting spot at Man U is impressive.

Wrong.

David showed no reaction, or even attempt of an reaction on either header. And he had terrible anticipation on both balls. Cech would have gotten a touch on both, because cech anticipates well. The reason being that cech would have gotten to both of them is because he is seasoned and he understands distances and motion, something that david is still learning to do.

it was terrible goalkeeping by d'gea

This is how it should have been done:

Cech's save on carroll's header last year in the FA Cup...Notice cech's anticipation from beginning to end

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N03Jqzfrxq0

Cech shits on Puyol's header:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_RgcWDjR6z8

cech's header save against Juventus:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3MV3AO2wRp8

There is no trolling here.I just know shit goal keeping when I see it.....But again, David is still very young, so I'll give him 7-8 more years to evolve.

Also, the first header was a great shot, but that second header was beyond savable, and david was frozen in his tracks because his perception of what was about to happen was incorrect

exactly bad goal keeping. period. he guessed wrong. that is a form of BAD GOAL Keeping. A goalkeeper has to be able to READ the action. He failed, and just stood there, aint shit trolling about that.

my opinion is not trolling, but you not understanding that is.

HE DID READ IT. The header was coming in at an angle that dictated that the header go to his right. He had his body prepared to go right and then it went to his left. That was a *great* header precisely because any goalkeeper reading the situation would have gone right. that wasn't proof of shit except that west ham's first goal was a great individual effort.

>my opinion is not trolling, but you not understanding that is.

lol. it's trolling to point at a not great play and call it "shite" goalkeeping. it wasn't shite, it just wasn't amazing.

you are clearly not talking about the first header( excuse me if I didn't specify). He was trying to read it, but clearly didn't read it properly, and it shot past him on the side, while he only bent a little.
he just watched it go right by him....he even looks away in disgust with himself @ 00:27..He knew he was shite

The makeshift backline just isn't working, and they can't hold against pressure in the box. Essien can sub as a RB, but not on a permanent basis. His has great pace on the ball or going from box to box up the MIDDLE, but when it comes to staying in front of his man in open space, or keeping up with the offensive player, that is not his specialty. Rb has to constantly shoot up the side, which is a huge difference than playing in the 8 or 6 spot in the midfield.

Just got to get Marcelo and Pep healthy, and get Carvalho out of there. HE is still a gamer, but father time is settling in....

Just get everyone healthy, and go after the CL hard.

why didn't the backline move up to force the player offide!..they dropped back down, prieto stayed onside for the goal!

that backline is terrible....

mourinho please just park the bus now!....you got a 1 goal lead, no need to continue to play open with only 10 men on the pitch

LMAO. that shit was a dive. he barely touched the back of the goalkeepers trail leg and fell forward afterward? defies physics if he actually got hit to fall like that.

that wasn't a fucking dive...even the announcers said it wasn't a dive, just like his goal was onside.

he was in forward motion going after the ball just like the goalkeeper was in forward motion. It does not matter if he made contact or not. His motion TO GO AFTER THE BALL PULLED HIM OVER. ..and he clearly hit his fucking hip which made him go over and the goalkeeper go over. .

if there was no contact why did the goalkeeper go over then?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eeMNubtfw7g

which is what he was arguing to the ref about ..

never should have been a yellow.

They see their clubs decimated and need something to hold onto outside of the fact that they're being dominated.

I do believe that the fact that they're smaller in stature really irks people too, particularly Americans. It's as if they can't believe smarts can prevail over strength.

I'm not mad at all. I know why we lost: torres! He gave us no service at top, so mata was like the second striker and had to really go at it, but lack the clinical touches on his striker. He should have scored, but didn't

Ivan, who is usually solid in every game, made two brain farts. Shit happens, but turnbull is such a shit GK he doesn't know how to cover or help defensively. Cech, to me, would have stopped both of those goals.

I'm glad this game happened, because it is further proof that torres needs to GOOOOOOOOO. Plus ba scored on that attempt,he wasn't offsides, but it is what it is. Next game we are going to put up five goals, so I am not worried. our attack is too strong.

Rafa provided good tactics. The guys just didn't finish properly.

nothing to see here ...with ba up front we are ruthless, but he couldn't start ba because we play stoke this weekend.

that is why we need a third striker!

then he gets a lucky one.

My boy Thiago got a goal and an assist!
but both before I was able to tune in.
2 for Villa and 2 for Alexis.
All 3 scorers NEEDED those goals.
Good win without the Messi/Iniesta/Xavi.
