"no reaction to lomas brown's recent comments?.."
Thu Dec-27-12 12:00 PM by CyrenYoung

..I don't think that anyone's surprised that things like this happen, but the fact that he went public about it is a bit much.

sounds like something he should've handled directly with mitchell.

Former Detroit Lions offensive tackle Lomas Brown made waves last week when he said he once purposely missed a block to get quarterback Scott Mitchell knocked out of a 1994 game because Mitchell was playing so poorly.

Mitchell fired back on Wednesday's "Dan Patrick Show," per Yahoo! Sports.

"It just really hurt," Mitchell said to substitute host Mike Florio. "It was extremely disappointing. I'm really shocked by it, to be honest. Here's a guy I've had in my house, I had a big dinner for the offensive linemen every year, he came to my house and ate dinner, I gave my offensive linemen gifts every year. For him to do that is just reprehensible, beyond words. It's really disappointing, it really is painful. When you mess with my family, mess with my livelihood, mess with my health, it's unacceptable. It's B.S."

Brown, who was selected to seven Pro Bowls during an 18-year career, made the claim on ESPN radio, where he is an analyst.

"We were playing Green Bay in Milwaukee," Brown said. "We were getting beat at that time and he just stunk up the place. He's throwing interceptions, just everything. So I looked at Kevin Glover, our All-Pro center and I said, 'Glove, that is it.' I said, 'I’m getting him out the game.' ... So I got the gator arms on the guy at the last minute, he got around me, he hit Scott Mitchell, he did something to his finger ... and he came out the game. (Lions backup quarterback) Dave Krieg came in the game."

Mitchell broke a finger on the play in question when he was hit by Sean Jones. Krieg took over as the Lions' starting quarterback and led the team to a 5-2 finish and a playoff berth.

Current Lions quarterback Matthew Stafford was glib when asked about Brown's admission.

"I'm just glad he's not blocking for me," Stafford said, according to the Detroit News. "I'd have to be really nice to him if he was."

Lions center Dominic Raiola was less amused.

"That's kind of bush league if you ask me," Raiola said. "When I saw it, I was like, I don't think I'd ever do that. ... That ain't cool."

It sucks as a lineman to have to continue to block for someone that's stinking it up left and right, but to get him knocked out the game, that's fucked up.
Grimy all the way around. Mitchell has a right to be upset

there were many options between kill your commander and fight the war as requested.

similarly, there are many options between not block for your QB and try your hardest to block for a shitty QB.

bottomline, not only did you make a stupid comparison, but it was one in which of your two options, the better option was to do what Lomas Brown did. If the choice is between kill lots of innocents as part of a flawed war strategy for an unnecessary war and kill your commander, the proper moral decision is kill your commander. Better still is civil disobedience by simply refusing the order.

similar, brown coulda told the coach i'm not going out there to block for this piece of shit QB.

Getting a guy hurt on purpose is what's hot in the streets? Win or lose, that's a bitch move

And like someone said above, as a lineman, your JOB is to protect the QB.

There's a lot more in the hands of the players than we think. Diva running back talking shit and treating people like shit in the locker room, well that FB just so happened to miss first color around the corner and the RB gets killed. This shit happens way more than we know and Lomas just put it out there. WR talking shit and making life miserable for the team, let me lead you across the middle a little bit more than usual BAM wr knocked out and can't talk for a bit. They police themselves

..to find that this kinda thing happens

it's been referenced a few times over the yrs (mostly through film, ie: any given sunday)

but to come out in public, instead of 1 on 1 in private? (esp the way he initially said it)

seems a tad bit extra

Players usually take shit like this to their grave.

now i'm not sure if Lomas did this to boost his ratings on espn or what, but man I would've never expected to hear this sort of thing. Or at least not said like this.

..this doesn't strike me as the type of press that garners positive reaction from brass or the fans. brown isnt the greatest color commentary guy on set, he certainly held a respectable position as a retired vet. I just don't see how this improves his situation.

granted, I have no quarrel with the fact that he wanted to come clean about it, but why not reach out directly to mitchel in private?

..a great portion of the chemistry on the field is developed through trust.

while smith was in the dark about that play, it's obvious the more than 1 person knew the real deal. if im anyone else on that roster (esp the next qb), trust is out the door.

you can't go into battle if you can't trust the men beside you

..no twitter

this was back when most rumors were simply tabloid fodder. it's fairly easy to understand how this could easily fall under the radar.

plus, no one ever mentioned it to mitchell (which shows you just how despised he was). now I wanna know what the rest of the o-line has to say about it?

you can see that with fearless leaders like these, they were really going places.

that was also the year that barry sanders rushed for about a foot and a half against green bay. i guess it was a good thing they risked a guy's career to make that big push!

he entered the NFL. He was actually sacked at a higher rate in ATL than in Philly. This year, Foles has been sacked at a slightly higher rate than Vick. I'm not buying this at all. Vick's always been a relatively likeable/popular guy in the NFL.

to where he was being hit at full speed repeatedly

I'm sorry man he may have been getting hit more in ATL but he was actually running with the ball more too

If you watched any of those games the O Line looked like they gave up on him

I mean they were second stringers to begin with so there's that but something was fishy

see it - at all. Lmao at the notion that the OL guys were just 'letting' defenders go by them as if they could suddenly flip the switch and become competent blockers. The whole OL (not including Evan Mathis) has been absolutely abysmal this year. Most are practice squad caliber players at best. King Dunlap and Demestress Bell are a disgrace to the OT position. This isn't a case of guys intentionally not doing their job. Rather, it's a case of guys who really aren't capable of getting the job done.

Vick got to play behind an elite O-Line in 2010 and 2011 and he still took an exorbitant amount of vicious hits - though not near as many punishing hits as he absorbed in ATL (on fewer passing attempts at that). Part of it is bad luck coupled with bad coaching. Some of it is poor pocket presence and bad habits he's never corrected. Regardless, Vick has remained a target of big hits since he began his NFL career. His time in Philly is no exception to that at all. Furthermore, all reports indicate that he's a very well-liked and respected player by his teammates.

1) It was fucked up no doubt, but let's not be naive and act like this never happened before or still doesn't

2) The REAL problem is talking about this shit to spark up chatter without any foresight to anticipate the blowback. Regardless of the circumstances, what he said he did is indefensible in a public forum.

3) This is some stupid ass tangential bullshit to bring to light. What exactly was the value in this? Lomas was co-hosting and regularly appearing on Mike and Mike from time to time. I'll be interested to see how his career proceeds in light of this.

this shit he admitted to is deplorable and something you'd expect from a low-class individual. I'm not gonna demonize the guy, but that is some low-level disgraceful shit he admitted to. Don't care how much you want the guy benched, you don't intentionally try to injure your own damn teammate.

I can't imagine why he thought this was something worth sharing with a national audience. Did he really think people would laugh or simply shrug it off as if he did a noble thing? Mind-boggling to me that he would disclose this situation publicly.
