concerned though, actually more about the defense than the offense. Mike Brown is supposed to be a defensive coach. I've been one of the biggest Mike Brown defenders on here and we'll give him a little time to get his pieces acclimated and let Dwight get in game shape, but the expectations are there. We're the Lakers.

You'd like to dismiss the preseason as "meaningless", and we always struggle in Portland regardless for whatever reason. But going winless in the preseason then starting off 0-2 you kinda have the tendency to wanna string those numbers together and now we're 0-10.

>dribble penetration kills EVERYTHING

then why hasnt Chris Paul had more postseason success? There are ways to counter everything, particularly when you have 2 7-footers on the back line and one of them is a multi-DPOY winner

>Don't matter what your SCHEME is
>
>Mike Brown would rather have Mo WIlliams
>at the top of the key right nwo

Nash is not really the problem, you can hide a dude like him with the right scheme, there are a lot of point guards out there that are not great on-the-ball defenders and simple solution is to not have them on the ball. If you watched the Spurs-Clippers series in the playoffs Parker and Paul actually guarded each other probably less than half the time.

he's basically run for cover when it comes to the offense, if they can't play D (which so far they can't) then he deserves to be shitcanned for sure.

defense takes time though, it doesn't surprise me they are struggling at that end. dwight is still off and he is gonna dictate a lot of that success, their guards are well below average and disgustingly overrated on D respectively at this stage of their careers.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

It would be a bit reactionary considering it may takes some time to get better defensively.. They're never gonna be Pistons 2004 but they can probably get better as the chemistry develops..

It's not Mike Brown's fault they have a bunch of slow players. Maybe if instead of aggressively pursuing Nash they pursued Lowry or other younger players the results might be different.

He coached two teams with above average talent

The Walton Blazers team

The Price/Daughtery/Nance/Ehlo Cavs team

The former won a 'chip

The later was killed by Jordan (no shame in that)

He made horrible teams competitive the rest of his
career...including the Knicks

It's obviously way early, but if rotations are inconsistent and the starters are getting overplayed, it's going to be a bad season.

There should be at least 2 of the big 4 on the floor at all times.

Give the bench guys consistent minutes, and rotate them in at roughly specific intervals of the game. Same with rotating out the starters. This means they build chemistry with the same guys at specific points in the game night in, night out.

Minutes:

Bryant: 35, 38
Nash: 35, 16 (hurt)
Howard: 38, 41
Gasol: 40, 40
Artest: 37, 32

Ebanks: DNP, 12
Jamison: 15, 13 (he should be getting at least 20-25 to build a rhythm)
Meeks: 13, 5
Hill: 14, 8
Blake: 13, 27 (due to Nash's injury, but he should be getting 18-20 consistently)

The starters are getting way too much play this early in the season. If we have to lose games, fine, but at least develop your bench while you're at it. You don't do that by giving them inconsistent minutes with random DNP's thrown in. Ebanks, Hill, and Meeks can all GO. Sit Nash at the 8 minute mark in the first quarter, and put him out there with Pau or Dwight at the start of the second and up the tempo. Give Nash his running partners and create that spark with the second unit.

Not this inconsistent shit... same thing Brown did last season.

Edit: Just look at how Pop managed the minutes of his older starters with his younger kids. That's the hallmark of how rotations and minutes should be handled.

And Brown is giving the starters playoff minutes, not necessary for the second game of the season.

Especially not for someone coming off a foot injury... or someone coming off back surgery... or someone that's 37 years old... or someone that's been playing for his national team for the past several years.

I'm not jumping into the whole "is Mike Brown a good coach or not" debate, but his rotation and minutes management has been baffling since day one.

I thought common sense would take over this year in terms of his rotation and mins management. His mix and match, panic subs continue to be a consistent theme this year and like you said, not only does it not allow for the bench to build chemistry and confidence in certain spots but it ends up in running the starters ragged. There is absolutely zero structure to his rotation management.

They're old and/or hurt? Play them less! They're young and spry and need experience? Play them more!

For reference, the last FIVE years of minutes for the main Spurs guys:

Tony Parker (who's not even that old at 30 right today):
33, 34, 30, 32, 32

Duncan:
34, 33, 31, 28, 28

Gino:
31, 26, 28, 30, 23

So going back FIVE years when they're obviously not as old as they are now, he's still kept them with manageable minute averages. Everyone keeps counting out the Spurs year after year due to age, but that argument inevitably falls by the wayside because he doesn't let them age as fast (if that makes sense). The plus side is he's got all his young guys pitching in serious minutes and becoming productive as fuck.

What makes it worse? Mike Brown came from the Popovich coaching tree, so he should have already seen all this first hand.

Popp completely understands his end game and abides to a structure that will get the team there. Brown completely loses sight of his long-term vision and it ends up in the starters playing huge mins and mismatched, panic rotations.

those guys used to playing with each other and playing in that offense. As we all know they were all on the court together for 1 preseason game. It's kinda unfair to compare them to the Spurs who have had the same coach running the same sets for 15 years.

I preface this saying 2 things:

1. I haven't seen the games yet this year (thanks work and Dish Network).

2. I recanted my Mike Brown hate in the OKC series last season.

But if you're gonna go after anyone saying this has been Mike Brown has been mismanaging the minutes and the...everything so far in the season/preseason, what's he doing RIGHT? Again, I think they'll be fine. But you've gotta come defend your position.

Nash free-style ball will serve to get the Lakers blown
the fuck out against more athletic teams.

Question, Laker fan:

What team(s) gave the Lakers the most
trouble during their dynasty?

Yes. That 2000 Blazers team was one.

The Sacramento Kings were the other. Why?

The Princeton offense.

Because the Kings understood that they didn't
have the athletes to go toe to toe with the
Lakers, and definitely didn't have the one-on
one talent to play with a lot of the league.

That team was perfect because it was built
around excellent passing, motion, spacing
and tempo.

It had two above average big men and a bunch
of jumpshooters.

Dwight-Pau is better than Vlade-Webber in combo.

Bibby-Christie-Peja are Nash-Kobe-World War, except
the 3 (World War) is the defensive stopper, while
the 2 (Christie) was the stopper with the Kings.

Kobe is now a jumpshooter, and a fantastic one,
but a jumpshooter. Not nearly as limited as Peja,
but a shell of his former wing dominant self.

Nash is a better playmaker than Bibby and just as
dead-eye a shooter. Doesn't have Bibby's size.
Problem is, Nash has thrived in offenses where he
dribbled in circles for 12 seconds, finding space
while tossing lobs to young guys who can jump
(young Amare and Matrix). There's a reason that shit
never went anywhere in the playoffs. It wins MVP
trophies. Does not win in the playoffs (save that series
when Amare went apeshit against Duncan)

So,

The Lakers' offense must hit one or BOTH big men
EVERY time down the floor. Force doubles,
movement on the perimeter with SOMEONE
becoming open.

Its perfect.

(b) The rotation complaints are outright hilarious
because half the team is coming off of injuries.
Brown has no idea how far he can push Dwight or
Kobe yet. Not to mention everybody is fucking OLD.

Well, yeah, of course they are. If they're old, doesn't that mean you rest them *more* though? It's a marathon, not a sprint.

If the team is OLD and he doesn't know how far he can push them, Kobe/D12 are coming off injuries, Pau and Kobe are coming off Olympic summers, Pau and Kobe both faded in last years playoffs after playing 40+ a night in the regular season...then wouldn't logic hold that he would be playing them less minutes to start and then ramping them up to test how far he can push them? Rather, Pau/Kobe/Dwight are hovering around 38+ while he yanks around the bench rotations and trots out 4 bench players at the same time rather than pull back Nash and Pau/Dwight in the first quarter so we can always have 2 stars on the floor at all times.

The mins mismanagement, inconsistent rotations, and head-scratching lineups are something we saw all of last year...and it has continued to this season. I agree with your assessment on the Princeton and Nash has the leeway to initiate SnR when he wants (and he was more aggressively doing it last night) but your point B reaks of bs because both things you said (and the reasons I added to start this reply) are reasons why they should be playing less mins with a structured sub pattern rather than the nearly 40 mins and mismatch rotations we see now and saw all of last season.

This mismanagement issue speaks to the two biggest problems with Brown (I've never had a serious issue w his X's and O's...even earlier in this post said the offense and defensive will figure itself out): His lack of composure and inability to stick to a long-term plan.

The team will get better. Might even get to the Finals. But I'm officially on TEAM Mike Brown is a terrible head coach. Kobe and Pau playing 40 minutes in a blowout loss in game 2 of the season? He is going to run these old niggas ragged and it's going to kill them come playoff time.

At some point, Nash and Kobe will stage a mutiny on that offense and start running more PnR. The talent is there to make the season entertaining. But Brown doesn't even have a handle on the rotations he wants. Last year, I gave him a pass. This year, the same minutes issue. I don't even care about the two losses. We get beat by Portland all of the time. But to keep playing these dudes in a blowout is retarded.

Great defensive assistant but has consistently shown the lack of structure and vision to manage a top flight team. It is what it is at this point but I sincerely hope he realizes that playing these dudes even close to 40 mins is going to leave them ragged when we need it the most.

how could you read what i wrote there as a critique of his time with the cavs?

i said i watch this laker team and wonder what brown took from poppovich, and that i could see the influence more with the cavs.

i have said repeatedly that the cavs overachieved like shit. in my opinion they were the single worst conference champion in history looking at their talent level top to bottom. it speaks largely to bron's illness but also to the job brown did coaching.

this is all stuff that's been covered plenty over the last 10 years here, but even if it weren't i don't get how what i said could be seen as disparaging to mike brown's cavs.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.

Nah...bad comparison...Those Cleveland teams did way more than they were supposed to do...It was basically Bron with C and D players...And they thrived because of Bron's all around play and solid defense by Brown...

To me, my issue with Brown has always been his offensive schemes...He seems anemic in that department...

I'm no Laker fan but I've seen the two Laker games so far (thanks to Verizon coming up with a deal with TWC to double my local basketball), and I don't think their offense has looked THAT inefficient over their two games. I mean, they've shot a good percentage from the field, even if it's a bit plodding and herky jerky to watch right now. Nash will eventually figure out at what points he can push it and do this thing. They turned it over too much against POR and couldn't hit a free throw against DAL but that should work itself out (though Howard will cost you a game or two at the line barring Chuck Person working a miracle with him).

But the defensive effort is pretty baffling to me. I mean, you got Howard to protect the rim with your old perimeter players, right? He turned Orlando into a good defensive team and he was the only guy who could defend a lick there. But watching the Lakers defend the half-court, they'll let penetration and Howard is in no position to contest the shot. They'll hedge their bigs and not recover so a guard gets a layup. Or Howard will step up to penetration and the guard gets an easy dish. Even if Gasol, Kobe, and World War aren't at their physical primes, they should still have pretty high bball IQs, you'd think they'd be smart enough to rotate quickly.

It doesn't help they don't have a single guard on their roster who can provide decent ball pressure, the opposing teams can pretty much walk into any set they want without disruption.

In response to Reply # 51

We've been absolutely horrendous defensively...some of which has to do with our turnover rate and the rest has to do with our laziness defensively. The latter was a major concern last year and hasn't changed this season yet either (and it's particularly perturbing since Brown's foundation has always been on the defensive side of the ball). The biggest issue remains on screen and roll defense. Either the big doesn't show hard enough which allows the gaurd to continue momentum into the lane or when the big shows, the weak-side rotation to the roll man isn't there early enough or if that rotation is there, the secondary rotation isn't there, etc. The team is doing a fucking terrible job of anticipating and by the time you react to ball movement, you're out of position and running out on a player who has every option available.

Rondo puts a ton of pressure on opposing ballhandlers and KG still covers a ton of ground recovering in the paint. Obviously Dwight can cover ground in the paint though I don't think his bball IQ is as good as KG but they still don't have anyone who can pressure the ball.

I did see you in post #9 tho and I think I was confusing some of this thread with the one complaining about the Princeton offense (with how Laker-centric this board is it all sorta blurs together).

Its still largely scheme and attitude, that first year when the Celtics won the title they were lights out on defense and Rondo wasn't quite Rondo and was splitting time with Sam Cassell, hardly a defensive stalwart. Guys like Ray and Pierce weren't known as great defenders prior to that year either. Perkins was/is a damn glacier. Old ass "studio thug" came in and brought a defensive mentality and almost singlehandedly transformed that team.

Have a disruptive PG is the reason the
Celtics were so good defensively. It starts
at the TOP. KG and Rondo anchored that D;
KG is as versatile a front court defensive
player as you'll ever see outside Rodman,
and Rondo is deadly

The numbers back that up... Rondo played almost 30 minutes in the regular season and 32 in the playoffs and Cassell played 17 when he came over midseason and averaged 12 per in the playoffs.

http://www.basketball-reference.com/teams/BOS/2008.html

Either way, I agree Rondo wasn't RONDO yet and KG and Coach Thibs made Pierce and Allen better defensive players, but c'mon give Perk some credit, dude is one of the if not the best post defender in the game (really his only redeeming quality since he's a mediocre rebounder and terrible offensive player). Either way, it doesn't just apply to that year, even if the Celtics didn't win another championship after that year, they've still been an elite defensive squad since then with the same formula.

... Which takes away from the original point, that it's hard to see where the 2012-2013 Lakers are going to find stops. It's obviously early, but Howard is the only great defensive player, Kobe, MWP, and Gasol are off from their defensive peaks, and the rest of the roster is pretty much filled with defensive sieves.

on the floor also. Especially late in games when they didn't trust Rondo to shoot free throws.

The bottom line is I think the whole Lakers are "old and slow" thing is overplayed. Howard and Gasol could be the top defensive frontcourt tandem in the league, Artest isn't what he was but he's still pretty good, ditto for Kobe when he's not gambling.

garnett apart from last year maybe was in better condition than howard right now. not saying howard wont get there, but he's got no lift and weakened lateral mobility right now.

there is a huge difference between rondo and nash. there is not a similarly big gap at any other position that would favor the lakers.

you can deny it all you want, but these guys suck on defense and it's not going to change significantly.

These aren't normal circumstances considering the window for this team and the fact that Dwight is a FA. If (and I pray to god when) Brown gets fired, we will bring in a respected coach like Sloan.

I get what youre saying but you realize the ramifications of this change mean they have to (in midseason) scrap everything they've worked to build and insert a new system. Maybe its possible with the veterans and high IQ the Laker stars have--

I was hoping he would recognize he has a lot of (starting) talent around him and be more willing to share the spotlight, get around 20 ppg and be fresher for the playoffs.

Instead it's pretty much the same old Kobe.

Nash being hurt doesn't help. Neither does the offensive system, which doesn't seem to make anyone better.

But as long as Kobe is set on 25+ppg, there's not going to be enough shots for everyone else.

I believe something will change by Christmas, whether it be a new offense or a new coach.

Have you paid attention or watched any of their games? It hasn't been Kobe's shooting that has failed them, but their defense. Kobe has actually been effective and efficient in scoring. However, they're old and slow on defense.

Brown has Jamison playing out of position, Meeks is still a better option than having Ron play the 2 to start the 2nd and 4th quarters, but I agree Morris is garbage (yet gets all the minutes when Duhon is a much much smarter players and steadying influence).

This bench is more than good enough to complement our stars....if you know how to rotate them correctly and intermittently. Two things Brown has shown no prowess for since he got here. Stu (Lantz) has been calling out Brown since the Clippers game for his insistence on stupid ass lineups with the bench.

Why doesn't Meeks play at all? He can at least make outside shots, which we could use.

Why does Ebanks play the 2? He doesn't have one NBA 2 Guard skill. Not one.

Morris over Duhon(who I don't even like) is questionable. And why did they keep Duhon if they aren't going to play him? Could've kept Goudelock.

Also, Jamison needs to find his niche. He looks lost, but he can bring more to the table than this once he finds his role.

An unsuccessful six-game homestand could cost Mike Brown his job as Lakers coach, sources close to the situation told Marc Stein.
Stein's report comes on the heel of Kobe Bryant's now-infamous death stare Wednesday night. Brown's been on shaky ground in L.A. since the day he was hired to succeed Phil Jackson and the Lakers' early struggles are doing him no favors. If the Lakers struggle in the next week, it could finally put an end to this never-ending soap opera.

Shaw is still with Indiana.
Phil?
D'Antoni? I dunno about that one.
Sloan? Intriguing choice but.... I dunno. Not sure if he's the right fit.

I dunno who IS the right fit.

Nate McMillan perhaps?

I have to believe there was a contingency already in place prior to this. I can't see it happening otherwise.
