"He did excellent work; he has improved tremendously. I really believe it was his best fight and he's turned from a boy into a man. I'm very happy that he's worked that way. He will definitely be ready for September 15. It'll be a true fight, a tough fight, but with the same results as I've always said....now he can talk, but on September 15, he will see who is not so happy to be called an old man. I will definitely shut his mouth...I will do the work like I always do, to do my best and improve myself in every fight. However, this fight will not go the distance," stated middleweight king Sergio Martinez, who talked about his highly-anticipated September 15 showdown with WBC middleweight champion Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Check it out!
MJ: Tell us Sergio, what did you think of Saturday night's performance by Chavez? Do you think he is improving as much as the HBO announcers say, or do you think they're overconfident?
SM: He did excellent work; he has improved tremendously. I really believe it was his best fight and he's turned from a boy into a man. I'm very happy that he's worked that way. He will definitely be ready for September 15. It'll be a true fight, a tough fight, but with the same results as I've always said.
MJ: Andy Lee said it would be a tough fight for you because of Chavez's size.
SM: He's definitely the bigger man; very strong. It's an advantage he has being a big 160-pound fighter against a small 160 middleweight.
MJ: What's the situation as far as the fight getting made? We've heard September 15 is the date. Is it official for September 15? Where are negotiations at this point?
SM: That's correct. It's September 15. Everything is fine. There is nothing to worry about when a champion wants to fight the best and the best wants to fight a champion. The money was not an issue in this case. I've never had a problem with this. Everything is set and done. It's not about only the money, it's about the title and integrity, which is not common enough in boxing.
MJ: Wonderful news! Is everything good to go with Top Rank and DiBella?
SM: Absolutely no problem whatsoever.
MJ: How does it feel to headline your first pay-per-view?
SM: It comes at the right time, at the best time of my life and career. I'm happy that everything is falling into place.
MJ: Has everything been worked out as far as ring size and glove choice?
SM: These are the only things missing. I'll be requesting 20 X 20, but I think that is mandatory in Vegas. It will not be an issue. The gloves will not be an issue. I will use Reyes and he can use whatever, but I will request that he weighs the gloves, because we want to be sure the company he uses really has ten ounce gloves. In the past , there were issues with gloves being weighed a few fractions of an ounce too heavy or too light, not exactly ten ounces.
MJ: Are you going to ask for drug testing?
SM: No, it's not necessary. I believe that Chavez is a good sport and I'm not worried about it. We don't need any other tests besides the Nevada tests.
MJ: Do you know anything about the undercard?
SM: Not yet, but I'm sure it will be a tremendous undercard.
MJ: Will there be a 24/7 with this fight?
SM: I don't know. It will be up to the promoters. I don't know if there is enough time to do it, but I need to be focused on my training camp.
MJ: How much does this fight mean to you?
SM: This will be the most important fight of my life because I want to recover my title from the best boxing organization worldwide, the WBC.
MJ: This fight has been a long time in the making. You've been so patient with the WBC.
SM: Well, we trust Jose Sulaiman and he has come through. I personally thank him for this.
MJ: Freddie Roach made a comment that this might be Chavez's last fight at 160. I didn't know if you had heard that or if Freddie Roach had misspoken?
SM: I have no clue. The only thing I can tell you is we've had communication from Lou DiBella that it's a done deal defending his title.
MJ: What do think will happen with the Canelo Alvarez/Victor Ortiz fight scheduled for the same night? Do you think one of you will move, or will it be competing pay-per-views?
SM: I trust my promoter and I know it will be September 15. However, if Canelo makes an issue out of it, I'll go down to 154 and knock him out too.
MJ: Does this mean a Canelo fight is on your radar next?
SM: If everything goes well with Jr., I plan to go down to 154 next and go after Canelo.
MJ: Would Canelo be your choice even ahead of Mayweather?
SM: Mayweather is the biggest thing for my career because he is the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. I want to fight the best and the best by far is Mayweather.
MJ: After his win on Saturday, Chavez made the comment that he was going to knock you out and shut your mouth.
SM: Good, now he can talk, but on September 15, he will see who is not so happy to be called an old man. I will definitely shut his mouth.
MJ: With all of these bad decisions that have been happening lately, is there more pressure for you to go for the knockout?
SM: I will do the work like I always do, to do my best and improve myself in every fight. However, this fight will not go the distance.
MJ: Is there anything else you'd like to tell your fans on FightHype.com?
SM: This will end up being the Fight of the Year and I will win. Hopefully the fans can appreciate the improvement of both fighters. I expect the people will support me because I will do my best to give a great show to the fans.
