And the wife-beating question (though odd) was his (admittedly odd, uncomfortable) way of saying 'if you wanna ask a baseless question then I'll toss you one back'.

Overall it didn't sound much different from their typical exchanges except the fact that Rome started to get audibly agitated because rather than just shut down his questions Stern sorta got his own shots in on Rome too.

Rome even prefaced the question about the draft by saying he didn't think it was rigged, but he wanted Stern to address people who do think it's rigged. I guess you could say Stern won because he fired personal attacks at Rome, and Rome did not return fire.

it was basically 'how you gonna have the nuts to ask me that' into 'lemme ask you some inflammatory shit I know isn't true as well', Rome then immediately started going into tangled justifications for why he should have been able to ask it (because folks have whispered about it) while double-dutch plea-copping at the same time (saying 'I'm not the kind of guy to say people wanna know before asking' while at the same time trying to diffuse by saying 'I don't think so but people wanna know').

If Rome was smart he could have flipped that awkward 'wife-beating' query into a 'personal v professional' angle then maybe bought some time to get Stern heated enough to break a sweat but alas, he's a steakheadish UCSB Communications major turned radio-jock trying to battle an Ivy-League Attorney who has ran a billion-dollar business for the past thirty years.

The end result being Groucho gamed Gaucho.

Rome should have been a bit more tactful in his approach but every now & then I guess he still needs to learn the hard way.

This episode was more ‘Indiana Jones watching the swordsman show off for a few minutes, then shrugging & shooting him’ from Raiders then Jim Everett’s ‘David Banner Goes Green When He’s Angry’ Incredible Hulk Table Flip.

Stern’s method obviously being the more effective one if you wanna avoid exerting mental or physical energy as well as avoid assault charges.

But make no mistake, the self-proclaimed pimp-in-the-box got pimp-slapped over the course of this exchange.

It's baseless until it isn't, so Stern retaliated in kind & had Rome fighting/flopping begging to justify his journalistic integrity by the time he disconnected the call (ERRR, 'had to go to break' to borrow an old Jungle tactic).

Stern won this one, son.

He used it when someone asked him if Donaghy was an isolated incident, which was actually a worse use of it because Donaghy had been proven to bet on games so that wasn't a loaded question; it was the obvious follow up.

Here, he pulls it out when it doesn't really fit.
