Jun 13th 2012

he responded pretty quick under the circumstance
Jun 13th 2012
13
           WOW!!! Not what I expected
Jun 13th 2012
24
it would've made some sense if rome said "is the lottery STILL
Jun 13th 2012
27
           lmao 2.6 seconds.
Jun 13th 2012
17
wait, Rome has been accused of beating Janet? When?

           cmon buddy, its rhetoric
Jun 15th 2012
138
So Rome said that asking if you still beat your wife is not personal
Jun 13th 2012
12
^^
Jun 13th 2012
96
yeah, I have personally heard it and said it in response to a loaded que...
Jun 13th 2012
98
Ahhhhh so much ado about nothing
Jun 14th 2012
122
That he went with that "loaded question" response is telling
Jun 13th 2012
23
that's just a rhetorical reply to imply the ? was loaded
Jun 13th 2012
49
that mofo acted like rome made that up just now
Jun 13th 2012
3
Stern always acts like a defensive child when he's questioned
Jun 13th 2012
5
Actually, Rome usually throws stuff like that at him, and he's cool
Jun 13th 2012
10
lol @ you can get on a plane and go to seattle.
Jun 13th 2012

Jun 13th 2012
26
FLOPPING!!!! OH SHIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! STERN IS SUCH A CUNT
Jun 13th 2012
25
in his later years he has gone full unrepentant asshole
Jun 13th 2012
28
Itconjures the image of Nikita Khrushchev banging his shoe on the podium
Jun 13th 2012
29
i initially thought rome did beat his wife. Stern used a horrible ex.
Jun 13th 2012
30
i'm entertained
Jun 13th 2012
31
everybody's gonna pull that 1 line but having listened, Stern sorta won
Jun 13th 2012
32
Stern overreacted.
Jun 13th 2012
33
Stern barely reacted at all while Rome did and asking him that
Jun 13th 2012
38
he was confused because stern's 'wife' question made no sense
Jun 13th 2012
43
it was awkward/reckless phrasing but it did make sense
Jun 13th 2012
51
eh Rome asked because people are talking/asking about it.
Jun 13th 2012
53
it is ludicrous until someone finds a way to provide a shred of proof
Jun 13th 2012
58
Stern constantly misuses the "wife beating" line
Jun 13th 2012
91
Stern barely acted? He fired some very unprofessional personal shots
Jun 13th 2012
48
I noticed you chopped the 're' off my subject line, slip like freudian?
Jun 13th 2012
52
my mistake. But I don't see how that changes my point
Jun 13th 2012
55
when he hold the mic Rome don't go next n/m
Jun 13th 2012
69
RE: Stern overreacted.
Jun 14th 2012
134
Yeah stern hit him with the combo breaker
Jun 13th 2012
35
Im laughin at ur sig at the end bcuz Stern Zombie-Chomped Romey here
Jun 13th 2012
40
      your sig funnier tho
Jun 13th 2012
57
yeah, sig is killin me, it's the only lie I've been telling in this post
Jun 13th 2012
60
no he didnt
Jun 15th 2012
139
Stern undressed him. barely had any emotive change when answering.
Jun 13th 2012
34
Yeah. Stern sounded like Sam Cassell when that kid asked him
Jun 13th 2012
37
      LMAO when was this???
Jun 13th 2012
101
           RE: LMAO when was this???
Jun 13th 2012
102
I got more important people to talk to like Stephen a smith
Jun 13th 2012
36
what a stupid way of asking the question. so flagrant.
Jun 13th 2012
39
why are people excited about the wife-beating part?
Jun 13th 2012
41
because rome didn't ask a loaded question.
Jun 13th 2012
44
      oh, okay.
Jun 13th 2012
45
well it comes off that way since rome didn't ask a loaded question
Jun 13th 2012
46
asking if it's rigged is the same thing with or without the 'still' part
Jun 13th 2012
54
no it's not. a loaded question is one you can't answer simply
Jun 13th 2012
59
           ^^^overlooked
Jun 13th 2012
61
so if Rome said 'still' or Stern had omitted 'still' then it's all good?
Jun 13th 2012
65
                Semantics do matter, here.
Jun 13th 2012
68
dawg the case was dismissed, dont get dragged outta court screamin/cryin
Jun 13th 2012
71
                     Whatevs
Jun 13th 2012
75
lol @ going the 'hate' angle, I like Rome & don't particularly
Jun 13th 2012
93
it just makes no sense in this context though.
Jun 13th 2012
70
but the only person who could have tried to flip it was Rome
Jun 13th 2012
73
i dunno, i don't really like either of them.
Jun 13th 2012
76
Oh, it's inappropriate. But it's designed to deflect Rome.
Jun 13th 2012
78
                     it absolutely is loaded
Jun 13th 2012
94
Cmon seriously? A loaded question is about structure not content
Jun 13th 2012
97
                          ^^
Jun 13th 2012
100
Apparently the use of loaded question to mean complex question
Jun 15th 2012
137
I don't think you know what a loaded question is
Jun 13th 2012
99
                               fine, semantically it's not loaded
Jun 14th 2012
123
it's a no win situation, but it's not loaded
Jun 13th 2012

Jun 13th 2012

Jun 13th 2012

Jun 13th 2012
74
Rome knew going into that interview that that question...
Jun 13th 2012
77
Stern and Rome always have contentious interviews

Jun 13th 2012
81
So Rome didn't ask the heated question for ratings?
Jun 13th 2012
85
I would of liked Stern to address the issue in another way.
Jun 14th 2012
120
Rome is already at the top. He doesn't need to pull stunts for ratings

I guess that is what some people say in response to a loaded question. Rome's question wasn't loaded, though.

Stern still attacked Rome's career and integrity, though.

the point is that if you give the yes/no answer that the asker wants, you're either admitting that you used to beat your wife and stopped, or implying that you still beat your wife.

he kept his cool & had Rome heated by the end of it.

And the wife-beating question (though odd) was his (admittedly odd, uncomfortable) way of saying 'if you wanna ask a baseless question then I'll toss you one back'.

Overall it didn't sound much different from their typical exchanges except the fact that Rome started to get audibly agitated because rather than just shut down his questions Stern sorta got his own shots in on Rome too.

Rome even prefaced the question about the draft by saying he didn't think it was rigged, but he wanted Stern to address people who do think it's rigged. I guess you could say Stern won because he fired personal attacks at Rome, and Rome did not return fire.

question while defending it as a 'I don't think so but other people say....' one is exactly what Rome said he *didn't* do moments later while trying to use it as a defense.

Stern cooly called him on it & had him backtrackingly confused/aggravated.

I like Rome but this was evidence he is not intellectually equipped for mental warfare with a man like David Stern, even at his advanced age.

In response to Reply # 43

it was basically 'how you gonna have the nuts to ask me that' into 'lemme ask you some inflammatory shit I know isn't true as well', Rome then immediately started going into tangled justifications for why he should have been able to ask it (because folks have whispered about it) while double-dutch plea-copping at the same time (saying 'I'm not the kind of guy to say people wanna know before asking' while at the same time trying to diffuse by saying 'I don't think so but people wanna know').

If Rome was smart he could have flipped that awkward 'wife-beating' query into a 'personal v professional' angle then maybe bought some time to get Stern heated enough to break a sweat but alas, he's a steakheadish UCSB Communications major turned radio-jock trying to battle an Ivy-League Attorney who has ran a billion-dollar business for the past thirty years.

The end result being Groucho gamed Gaucho.

Rome should have been a bit more tactful in his approach but every now & then I guess he still needs to learn the hard way.

This episode was more ‘Indiana Jones watching the swordsman show off for a few minutes, then shrugging & shooting him’ from Raiders then Jim Everett’s ‘David Banner Goes Green When He’s Angry’ Incredible Hulk Table Flip.

Stern’s method obviously being the more effective one if you wanna avoid exerting mental or physical energy as well as avoid assault charges.

But make no mistake, the self-proclaimed pimp-in-the-box got pimp-slapped over the course of this exchange.

that is well known. No one is talking about rome beating his wife(now they are).

It was an idiotic parallel.

stern tryna act like it was a completely ludicrous quesion, when it isn't. Yeah its kinda ballsy for rome to just come out and ask him like its nothing and stern tryna act like this question is outta nowhere, with zero legs. Stern lost if you ask me.

beyond hearsay/speculation.

That's like Bush having to explain why he engineered 9/11 because folks have speculated its an inside job.

It's baseless until it isn't, so Stern retaliated in kind & had Rome fighting/flopping begging to justify his journalistic integrity by the time he disconnected the call (ERRR, 'had to go to break' to borrow an old Jungle tactic).

Stern won this one, son.

He used it when someone asked him if Donaghy was an isolated incident, which was actually a worse use of it because Donaghy had been proven to bet on games so that wasn't a loaded question; it was the obvious follow up.

Here, he pulls it out when it doesn't really fit.

Stern's just an asshole and knows he can get away with anything so he doesn't give a fuck.

Rome was backpedaling like shit from the moment he asked the question ("I don't believe it, but, but...people do") and kept digging the hole -- like trying to buddy up midway through ("we've had some arguments like this before, old friend"), while Stern kept dicing him up.

Stern is a dipshit, but he's right about the reactions that Brookyln and Charlotte would have also yielded.

c'mon, let's not reduce this to semantics.

Rome tried to get cute & ballsy with it, then unwittingly brought the rucks down upon himsef in the form of Stern's Bath-Salts-Bron/Crabwalking-Dead-Cannibal-Chomp devouring of him over the course of the remaining interview time.

By the end Rome was running off that call mad as fuck like Rondo & KG ran off the court Saturday night.

it'd be like if you asked me whether i think miami can win the finals and i replied with "if my aunt had a dick she'd be my uncle."

the point of "do you still beat your wife?" is to expose a loaded question.

the point of "if my aunt had a dick she'd by my uncle" is to expose a stupid hypothetical.

nothing about rome's question was loaded.

was it stupid to expect anything different? probably. but it was in no way loaded. which makes "do you still beat your wife?" pretty inappropriate, because it makes no sense, and it's just a reference to domestic violence at that point.

i blame hip-hop.

maybe stern won, i dunno, the only real loser are the "clones" who regularly listen to that show.

i just think most people are going to see this as stern looking like a petty bitch. again.

and i think that anyone paying attention would agree that the wifebeater line is pretty inappropriate given the context.

i blame hip-hop.

it brings into the realm of legitimate questions a journalist can ask the NBA commissioner the concept that the NBA cheats with regard to competitiveness.

that's a VERY loaded concept to even float as worthy of respect (without any evidence). I can see why Stern would deem it loaded.

Just like if a politician were asked "Are you lying about your place of birth?" one might take offense to that as a legitimate news topic without a shred of evidence to support it.

is so common that wikipedia and most other sources I found online include both in the definition of "loaded question". So Stern's implication that Rome's question with controversial premises is a loaded question is in keeping with popular usage so far as I can tell. It would probably be more efficient if this were not true. I would have posted sources but I figured you can look them up yourself, yes? (Just teasing this is a loaded question in the "incorrect" popular sense obv).

A loaded question is usually a yes or no question that whether you answer Yes or No, it will indict you somehow.

Did you stop beating your wife? If you answer no, you admit to beating your wife. Saying yes implies that you used to beat your wife.

Kind of like when Jim Gray asked Larry Bird if he thought there should be more white NBA stars. Whether he answered yes or no, he was forced into making a racial comment.

he says yes, that confirms it. he says no, conspiracy theorists accuse him of lying. but that doesn't necessarily mean the media shouldn't ask, and it definitely doesn't make it loaded. i think it's a little irresponsible to ask when there's no actual evidence, but whatever. stern was WAY too defensive, and it reminds me of when someone asked him if the ref betting scandal stopped with donaghy or whether this was a larger problem and he scoffed at the mere suggestion. that question was more grounded in fact, but still, he gets defensive.

Rome coulda shrugged off that wife line but instead took offense and spent the rest of the interview defending his question. Stern kept that "I'm not mad, I'm disappointed" tone the whole time and then ended with the utterly devastating Screamin A Smith jab. Rome went home and beat his wife after that. Still.

Rome is way past the Chris Evert and Rat Family stuff. He addresses it several times a year. He does use a lot of hyperbole, but he is much more professional than he was in the early days (and more professional than most sports radio on the air today).

Also IMO, this is out of line from Stern because he and Rome have a history of cordial interviews. Stern knows what to expect. I have a very hard time believing that Stern was surprised to get that question from him.

In response to Reply # 74

... would piss Stern off. He asked it anyway. It's not solely for "journalistic integrity." It's for ratings. Asking the question he knows will piss off the commish will get Rome ratings. So when Stern came back trying to piss Rome off, and Rome immediately defended his line of questioning, whereas Stern did *zero* defending of his own line of questioning and stayed sounding perfectly calm, Stern won.

In response to Reply # 77

Rome asked a question that many people are thinking. Fact.

Stern responded with attacks against Rome's professional integrity. Fact.

Yes, Stern responded calmly and made his points, but it was unprofessional imo. Why go on Rome's show if harbor these feelings about Rome? Because it gets Stern ratings too.

But Rome was totally thrown and didn't get to ask another on-point interview. Meanwhile, everyone thinks Jim Rome beats his wife and Stern called him on it. I'm not saying it's a "clean" interview tactic, but between that and the "important Steven A Smith" interview after, I was HOWLING. Stern as a debater made Rome his bitch, despite the fact that Stern didn't have a leg to stand on! Stern's standing as someone you don't want to fuck with in an interview is second to none in all of sports, really.

I don't think we disagree. I just think Stern is a master debater and fucking dismantled him with his deflection. We only disagree on the result, not the tactics being employed.

but Rome didn't ask "is it still rigged"....he asked, is it rigged. Not a loaded question. He wasn't really asking if it was rigged, he was giving Stern a platform to address the sentiment that it was rigged.

And Stern didn't debate, he just started throwing out personal attacks.

If he was REALLY concerned about the sentiment, he would've done something about it.

I also feel like other people have brought this up, especially right after the draft. Stern wasn't going on to talk about the "rigged draft," I'd reckon. I feel like it's far more likely he was on to talk NBA Finals and got pissed when Rome dragged up the conspiracy again. So Stern, like the fucking destroyer of souls he is, fired back.

Yeah. Well, you think Stern wins for attacking Rome's integrity, and I think Stern loses for being unable to address a relevant and ubiquitous question. So that's it.

Despite his preface with "everyone wants to know this"? Alright.

Rome's not a beacon of journalistic integrity. I don't dislike him at ALL, but he's not far removed from the rest of these dudes. He's looking for the quote that gets HIM shine, period.

I'm not saying Stern looks MORALLY right to intelligent thinking humans here. But to the average joe, in terms of sheer debating prowess? Dude, Stern fucking pwned that guy.

In response to Reply # 85

Instead of going on the attack, I would of liked Stern to handle it more professionally.

He is the leader of a major sport in this country. I don't care who he is, or who he thinks he is. This question is out there in a lot of peoples heads. Think back to when Chicago got the first pick to get hometown guy D. Rose, when they had the 9th overall odds of getting that pick which is pretty low. And this draft turned out very strange, with the only team moving around were the Hornets moving up to the 1st pick. Then you had the whole ordeal with the Hornets being NBA owned and with the new owner actually sitting in on the draft with his wife! Just seemed fishy to me.

Anyway, Stern should have answered the question intelligently, like he usually does with everything, instead he went on offense, re-directing the interview at Rome.

I'm not a Rome stan at all but I'm glad he had the balls to ask tough questions. Whether it is for ratings or for journalistic integrity. Rome has a solid base, he has a radio and TV show, I don't think he asked this question to further his career. I think his career is as far as it is going to ever be.

Everything is fair game to the media, and this is no exception. If your players can be asked the tough questions and put through a microscope after ever little action that occurs during the course of a game or season then it is fair to put everything the man that runs the league does through the microscope and ask those questions.

Yes, we have heard Stern address this issue before but I don't believe it was ever in an intimate interview setting such as this.

But it is for ratings. There's a difference between being a clown for ratings and knowing you're asking a question that's gonna piss your interview subject off for ratings. He may not NEED it, but he still wants it. If he didn't give a shit about ratings or money, he'd be doing a puff piece for a non-big-money contract.

Stern's Romes boss?

Shit, you at least have the opportunity to walk up to your boss and talk.

We the people don't have that opportunity with Stern or any one similar such as Goddell. So I think Rome did his best to ask the question in a respectful manner.

I love this guy. Used to hate him like many others do.

But that was before I realized his genius.

His handling of the Hornets has been undeniably excellent, and the madmaking he has displayed along the way has brought great satisfaction to the fanbase. He has transformed me into a fan.

He wins every interview he ever gives. His ether is served slow, cold and with a devastating calmness, continually shutting down the utter shit that is the modern sports media. Rome is a joke, that question was a fucking disgrace and anybody who actually believes in these conspiracies is next-level mad.

He led the NBA into its transformation as an international phenomenon bringing enormous wealth to players, is the driving force behind the league this board can't help but be obsessed with and doesn't give a single, solitary fuck what any of us think about him.

Stern wins. Again.

*Today was pretty awesome either way you slice it

*Rome probably needed to be knocked down a peg because he always throws crazy stuff at Stern like this, and I think his head was getting a little big, thinking he can ask anything

*Rome and Stern are probably going to have a Sapphire or two and a good laugh this weekend
