"Poll question: On the Eve of War: Durant @ Age 23 >>>>>>>>>> Bron @ age 23?"

Spinoff of O_E's classic: http://board.okayplayer.com/okp.php?az=show_topic&forum=21&topic_id=69146&mesg_id=69146&page=3

No agenda here cus imma stay LeBronese til the wheels fall off but..

Durant as of today is a better player than Bron at same age, no?
dude is a better scorer, rebounder, shooter & clutch performer

Bron at same age (2007) was "LeRobot" programmed to destroy the Pistons in the playoffs &
league MVP.

And both leading their teams to the NBA finals at same age.

No time to boxscore bobby but who better at 23 yrs old?

Poll result (23 votes)
Durant better (3 votes)Vote
FOH (20 votes)Vote

Bron was trying (had to be) to be Durant AND Westbrook. Harden on the way up is better than Hughes on the way down. Ibaka could probably put up Z numbers on offense as a second option. I'm sure Cook could do Boobie/Murray numbers if he had 30-36 minutes a game to shoot.

2-4 on the thunder would be the first guy Bron passes to in CLE. 5-12 on the thunder roster I could all see as major minutes/10 ppg guys....except maybe old ass Nazr.

when did Bron have a Russey to play with at age 23? when did he have a Hardin off the bench to play with?

Durant is a Great player and whatnot, however if he had to play with the tomato cans that Lebron had to play with during his run to the finals at the same age, then Durant would be lumped with former sonic Rashard Lewis and be out there in saudi arabia dying for playing with wackness.

Bron is leaps and bounds far better at 23 and up, though durant is the 2nd best player going today, that i will co sign

If Rashard was ever able to score off the dribble, he would have been worth his contract.

bron put up 30/8/7, 48% FG
KD put up 28/8/3, 49% FG

and if we look at team accomplishments, it's fair to argue that KD plays with more talent than bron ever has -- including now. also, cleveland's pace was 25th and OKC's is 6th, meaning the numbers above are skewed a bit in favor of durant.

KD is not going to be like McGrady, a complete waste of athleticism on D, but he has a long way to go to catch Bron.

IMO Bron is the best defender in the league today and he has been very good in his own end for a while now. Also a much better playmaker.

that's not a dig on durant, just an acknowledgment of bron's extraordinary vision, spatial understanding of the court and possession of the upper body strength required to accurately make those passes.

durant has his role as a scoring wing, bron has his as a point forward.

i'd take lebron and for some of the reasons you're saying, but to me defense they are in similar positions and that is where bron smokes him.

he was first on the team in steal by a huge margin and second in blocks. his defensive rating was 104, which isn't great, but was the best on the team out of guys who played substantial games (he was tied with z, sideshow bob and dwayne jones). ben wallace was a bit better at 102, but only played 22 games for the cavs.

so, arguably, bron was the best defensive player on the cavs.

today and today there are moments he doesn't have confidence in it. He wasn't the defender he is now. Durant is as good defensively as Bron was at 23.

I'm still taking Bron though.

that one game really made kobe's entire reputation as a defensive stopper. all bullshit aside, AI got injured at the end of the first half and kobe checked him in the second half. he did a fine job, but it was overstated because of the stardom of both players. shit, they didn't even bother trying to put kobe on him in later games (just as philly didn't put AI on kobe). too much of a size/speed difference.

25/5.5/5.5 on 47% shooting. less blocks, less steals. lower PER, lower WS/48, lower offensive rating and about the same defensive rating.

36. "you can't really compare Kobe to either of those two @ that age"
In response to Reply # 21

because you can't underestimate the luxury Kobe had playing w/the best/most dominant player in the league at the time....the pressure and expectation for him, unlike it was for Lebron and Durant from day 1, to be the focal point of that Laker team didn't fall his shoulders...

that makes a huge difference when comparing him to two players who were the face and leaders and best player for their team the minute they put on a uniform...

than me...Born Dec 30th 1984....so yeah, he was 22 that entire year.

Same with Kobe, he was 23 for the 2001-2002 season, born August 1978.
