"College Basketball to Pro transitions you got wrong"

Maybe it was something that happened more when I was younger and didn't really understand the exact nature of said transition, but

Eric Montross: I didn't think he would dominate, per se, but as a teenage Carolina fan I thought he would be a 10 & 10 guy easy.

Lawrence Moten: Did his NBA Career even happen?

Harold Miner: I know he would have never been what I thought he would be, but I still kinda blame this on Steve Smith and Glen Rice refusing to pass the ball...to anyone.

I think Redick's met most of his fans reasonable optimistic expectations, which is a solid NBA rotation player. I think most people expected he'd flame out of the NBA faster than you can say "Tragan Langdon".

And should have been the starter the last two years minimum.

I just remember I wanted the Hornets to draft him because they hadn't had a legit 2 guard since Dell Curry. Magic snagged him right before their pick, though, so they got freaking Hilton Armstrong.

They offered Redick a contract after they signed Korver. And Redick was to start over Korver. Or Bogans.

Especially since they signed Korver for less than they offered JJ.

Especially since Redick has been better than Korver for three years (much better the last two).

Especially since the Bulls were forced to start Bogans, who was awful and is muuuuuch worse than JJ.

Especially since the Bulls later, showing their desperate need for a SG, were forced to sign Rip, who they again offered less money than they offered JJ.

Especially since Rip's numbers as a starter this year were inferior to JJ's numbers as a starter this year.

There's not a living breathing Bulls fan on this board that wouldn't start JJ Redick over Keith Bogans/old-ass Rip/Kyle Korver. Not one.

...what a good pro player is. He's had to work really hard to have a quality NBA career, which should last several more years. There are very few guys who can play at or near all-star levels, and too often the guys for whom that level is out of reach are treated like they're second-class players within the NBA.

Realistically, guys like Steve Kerr or Derek Fisher are really no better than JJ Reddick--they just end up on different teams and reap the rewards or suffer the consequences. Fans and especially media love to inflate the value of guys when they end up on a championship team.

James Posey was a very good pro player, but he cashed in something awful when his team won a title. Same goes for 'good' talent like Trevor Ariza. He was labeled as some sort of future star, when realistically he was just a pretty good player who played his role within a great team.

he turned out to be good rather than great.

also, i thought Chris Webber would have a better career, but in reality i think he *did* have a good career, but injuries kind of 'grounded' (pun unavoidable) his above the rim-type game that he had in college. after his knee injury, he never had the above-average athleticism that anchored his game.

Webber is one of the 10 best power forwards to
ever play.

There is no conceivable way that you could have predicted
he'd be better than he was, because he was fucking phenomenal
and is a fixed game away from an NBA championship.

As opposed to what actually happened, where he proved to be one of the shittiest NBA players of all time. Luckily for him he went first round so he got that guaranteed contract.

along with Terrance 'Shoulda Came Out My Sophomore Year & Been A Lotto Pick' Morris was definitely an upset & I watched the majority out of that title teams games being in MD at the time.

It wasn't that I thought Dixon would be a great pro (he was a tweener guard that was the consumate 'college star' type but I really didn't think Blake would get more than a Pepe Sanchez type of pro look.

It happens a lot with players from different teams, but from the same team, it's rare that the superstar turns to a 10-12th man in his prime, while the 2nd or 3rd best player turns into an average-solid starter in his prime.

he was somewhat undersized for a SG even at the D1 level (nevermind the NBA!), and did nothing particularly well enough. But he was a "good story" kid that rose from sheer adversity to lead a deprived program to a title.

however i'm still baffled how Blake has managed to last this long, while my boy Randolph Children continues to toil in remote Oceania-league locales

dude had it all at NC. freaky athleticism, cluth play, versatility (played 3 positions very well from from SG- PF).

yeah Joe Smith got player of the year in 95, but Stacky was easily the best player, and talent entering the draft

the sound Jay Williams motorcycle made upon impacting the barrier on Lake Shore Drive is in the same register with the hearts of the entire populace of Chicago being torn out simultaneously mid-beat.

Bobby? I thought he had the skills to stick as a career backup. I guess he kinda verified that post injury when he stuck for a few years.

that cost them the game and pretty much their first Final 4 trip(they would've played Boston College in the Elite 8, and they beat like 25 consecutive games) pretty much eliminated him from being considered the best.

unless your counting the fact they both led their teams to national titles (which cannot be understated), but, that was due mostly to both having better teams than Marshall

But as far as individual careers, no other Huskie was better than Marshall. I witnessed all 3 yeas, dude was that good.

and I would put the talent level on both his and Yell's squads on about the same level. As the best player on his team his junior year his squad lost 1 game with him in the lineup and he didn't nut up like Yell when the game was on the line. He was a beast but sadly those 2 missed free throws is what alot of Husky fans remember about his career.

Not by his in-game play.

Rip and Okafor are probably the most accomplished players in UConn basketball history.

Even though Elton Brand was the most dominant big I've ever seen at Duke, and JJ Redick was the most dominant scorer I've ever seen at Duke, I put them both behind Laettner, Hill, J-Will, Hurley, Battier. Accomplishments are the name of the game.

Biggest L's ever for me. I didn't think Durant would be this dominant and didn't realize Mayo was such an idiot.

I still have some faith in Supercool Beas but he's been a mess.

I thought Junior Burrough would be a nice second round pick and was very happy when the Celtics got him. I also thought Salim Stoudamire could have stuck around as an Eddie House type.

He's a major contributor on that Grizzlies squad and a very well-rounded player. It's not as though he doesn't have an NBA-caliber skill set.

I feel as though he plays his role well.

I agree with you that in a different situation, he looks like a totally different player.

I did. People forget how good Brown was college level. He was consistently the offensive spark plug for that squad. If you woulda told me outta Him, Deron and Luther Head that he would last the LEAST long in the L I woulda thought you were 730.
