"What if Tim Duncan had come out a year early, in the 1996 draft?"
Mon Jun-04-12 08:51 AM by KosherSam

While he was at Wake, everyone had been saying that Duncan would have been the first pick in the draft had he come out after his freshman, sophomore, or junior seasons.

The 96 draft is already looked at as one of the best of all time, but what woulda changed if Duncan was there?

The 76ers definitely take him over AI, for starters.

The Raptors and Grizz were at 2-3, and both passed up all-american guards to take big men.

The Raps had Damon Stoudamire, so they likely would have still taken Camby ahead of AI. The Grizz are a tougher call, but if they passed up Marbury and Allen for Shareef, they would probably do it if AI was in the mix too.

Here's where it gets interesting. Bucks at 4, T-Wolves at 5, Celtics at 6. Marbury, Allen, AI, Antoine Walker.

Who goes where? Do the Wolves still pair Marbury and Garnett? What if AI was in Boston with Pierce? What about the rest of the draft? Kobe? Nash? etc.

Interesting, the Bucks actually drafted Marbury and the Wolves drafted Ray then they swapped, I wonder how that would have played out with Iverson still on the board. The Bucks had a young Glen Robinson and Vin Baker and a not spectacular but solid veteran pg in Sherman Douglas so I guess they felt like they needed a 2 but do they pass on Iverson who was considered a pg at the time? Is so how do Iverson and KG coexist in Minny? Does Boston go with Steph?

was Minny really wanted a PG to go with Garnett. So if the Bucks still took Marbury, I think the Wolves just take AI, and Allen falls to the Celtics.

More likely, though, the Bucks would take AI, who was the best of the three, and then the Wolves get Steph without having to trade, and Allen falls to the Celtics.

Either way, I think Antoine Walker becomes a Clipper, which is probably more fitting, considering his career arc.

The Sixers never would have made the Mutombo trade obviously, but do Dunan and Theo Ratliff dominate inside and win multiple titles with Eric Snow and Aaron Mckie at guards?

Or does the entire makeup look totally different anyway.

they probably take Chauncey Billups instead, and have Billups, Duncan, and Stackhouse as their young core.

you'd have a core of stackhouse and duncan, for starters. they took van horn (who was traded) the next year, and then hughes -- but those might have been different because of their record and needs. that philly team was constructed around one dynamic scorer and a bunch of defenders, so there's no reason it would have looked like that without GOAT.

You can't really say what would've happened in the next draft because teams records might have all been different with this different draft.

1. 76ers: Tim Duncan
2. Toronto: Allen Iverson - I think Iverson was too good to pass up. They'll trade Damon.
3. Vancouver: Marcus Camby - They needed pretty much everything, probably should have taken a guard in this draft but they'll team Camby instead of 'Reef with Big Country here.
4. Milwaukee: Stephon Marbury
5. Minnesota: Ray Allen - Both teams had PFs for 'Reef's slide continues.
6. Boston: Shareef Abdur-Raheem - Thank goodness this didn't happen because I never liked 'Reef and had fun rooting for Walker, flaws and all.
7. Toronto (trades Damon Stoudemire to Clippers) - Antoine Walker. Clips needed a PG; they were starting Darrick Martin. This deal makes too much sense for both teams. Walker and Iverson would have been a pretty crazy duo. Iverson, Christie, Walt Williams, and Walker might have been one of my favorite teams to watch.
8. New Jersey Nets: Kerry Kittles
9. Dallas Mavericks: Lorenzen Wright

I don't think things change from there and Samaki Walker is the guy who falls, possibly all the way to Indiana who passes on Jermaine O'Neal to take him. The Knicks end up using on their picks to take a flyer on him.
