Thu May-31-12 09:20 PM by mistermaxxx08

both these two cats are considered top 50 ever and also two respected Defensive Centers, they are also victims of playing alongside even better teammates in Larry Bird and Tim Duncan Respectively, however just out of these two who was the better Center and why?

these cats are always on the great 2nd tier of Centers list.

Poll result (24 votes)
David Robinson (15 votes)Vote
Robert Parrish (9 votes)Vote
a draw (0 votes)Vote

Parish played longer but he was seen as underwhelming in Golden State and a sleeping giant and then the end of his career, he was a journeyman stuck at the end of the bench. The extra seven years aren't much to write home about.

You can't knock Robinson for struggling to get over the hump because Paris wasn't a #1 guy in Boston and the only time he was close to being the main man was in Golden State where they didn't like him. At the time, trading Joe Barry Carroll for him and a pick was seen as a decent move by Golden State. (And many people have wondered if the trade wasn't made if Carroll would have been driven by Bird and the C's and never fallen into his Joe Barely Cares mode.)

Also, retiring on top as NBA Champion is a perfect way to end a career as well. Add that to one of three players who has one ROY, MVP, and DPOY and some other career highlights and I can't see how he'd want to swap careers with Parish at all.

plus he won a scoring title, rebounding title, and blocks title (2 of them). highest parish ever finished in any of those categories was a 3rd in rebounding one season

neither guy was built to be the best player on a title team, but robinson's spurs won 60 games pre-duncan and parish's warriors were terrible (only made the playoffs in his rookie year when he put up 9 & 7)

he absolutely could have been the man on a title team...he just could never pull it together in the playoffs.

I think he may be a bit under-appreciated by this "title or bust" era.

That being said, though, I still think Chief had a longer, better TEAM career, but Admiral was miles ahead of him as a player

i mean, that's like saying Charles Barkley would swap careers with Robert Parish because then he'd have some rings. That doesn't mean Parish is somehow better than Barkley.

Robinson is far and away a better individual player. And had way more personal accomplishments.

But Parrish was more than a role player on some all-time great teams.

I'm not playing the swap game, becuz it's too speculative. But Parrish was on more accomplished teams.

Not hard.

Robinson was a better player and had a better career on a worse team. By far the least important part of that sentence is "on a worse team".

Robinson's already basically second fiddle to Tim Duncan and lost his prime to Olajuwon (in terms of national accolades).

if you say "robert parrish" to a random fan, they think of the great boston teams and forget Parrish was ever in golden state.

that's what i'm saying robinson would trade for. maybe not the ups and downs, and as an individual player, he definitely had the better individual accomplishments, but being a key part of a historically memorable team/era/dynasty? i think that wins over being the great player who needed Tim Duncan to put him over the top (which I know is silly considering Parrish had McHale and Bird, but that's still the narrative).

David Robinson was the man for YEARS.

They regularly had deep playoff runs with Sean Elliott as their 2nd best player. Not getting past Hakeem doesn't diminish his legacy that much.

I feel like if anything you're commenting on the higher number of Celtics fans and those fans tendency to romanticize former players more than anything related to the actual play of either guy.

i blame hip-hop.

If you say Parish, they think a third fiddle and a few people might say DJ was better than him. Stop acting like people in San Antonio don't respect The Admiral as much as people in Boston love Parish. They probably hold him in MUCH higher regard.

Parish's Celtics team won one more ring than Robinson (who could have matched that had he hung around for another couple years as a role player.) I think The Admiral is more than happy with his career and likely wouldn't even think about trading it with Parish. Dude has one less ring and far more individual accomplishments.

so basically, you're giving up ROY, DPOY, MVP, scoring title, rebounding title, blocks title, 5 playoff series wins as your team's best player

in exchange for a single title as the 3rd best player

Maybe some people would choose to be a part of the Celtics but I was mostly calling out the nonsense that Parish is somehow more beloved in Boston than The Admiral is in San Antonio.

I think most people would take the two chips, MVP trophy, DPOY, ROY, scoring 70 in a game, and all of the other accolades.

And in the end, if the discussion is: would you rather be David Robinson or be on the '86 Celtics, then the clear answer to the OP is David Robinson.
