year.

I don't know if it's Brodeur still playing at the top of his game at 40 years old 17 years after his first cup or what. Logic would say it's because they knocked out the Flyers but if that was the issue I would have liked the Devils lots of year (sorry cheap zing)

In all seriousness though, I felt good for them watching them celebrate yesterday which I've never in my life felt.

That being said I'm rooting for the Kings b/c I don't do that root for your conference mate bullshit as if it makes my loss easier.

they got credit for *at times* in the past.

every line has a player that plays a pretty game: parise, kovalchuk, elias.

they still trap but they fore-check more aggressively. more speed. push hard plus back-check fiercely.

We were able to get through that push and momentum after that tying score (unfortunate bounce but part of the game), get some flow back, force OT and Kopitar with an incredibly patient move, pure class.

Phew, great start.

they were able to set it up in the last 25ish minutes of the game. from about minute 15 to minute 35 of the game they could not get the zone or even get many pucks in deep. if you're not doing that, you're not going to fabricate a forecheck from nothing.

i thought they had it going decent in the first period. both teams came out tentative, with a little wobble in their legs and of course the puck rolling more than it was flat didn't help matters.

weird game, i would write it off totally as far as predicting the rest of the series. same thing as two years ago with flyers-hawks, a feel out game with weird stuff going on.

only three penalties in an OT game? that wont last either. these were two of the least penalized teams but that's still pretty unusual.

Came out way too high to challenge. There was too much space to sell out on a shot and knowing Kopi's tendencies (two breakaway goals in earlier rounds, made similar move but reverse forehand-to-backhand in shootout vs Marty) he made a big mistake.

Brown joked about Kopi sucking in shootouts but said he is money in breakaways, would give him the puck er'time.

this has been a little awkward, travel here was a snap but getting around from NY to NJ has been a pain. building is weird, too, lots of little tight corners and crap. thought vancouver last year was much better locale.

it was pretty humid the other day, from like monday til wednesday it was muggy. they turned down the temperature and were more anal about closing doors today. much better ice. also nicer weather, has been beautiful for the last three days apart from some rain late last night.

just been busy, man, lots of stuff. this game right now is tight, deserved to be tied.

the difference in soccer between an in-game penalty and a shootout. Ronaldo didn't miss a PK this season, but flubbed one in a shootout in the Champions League. Too much time to think.

I couldnt' find a stat person that keeps actual in-game breakaway conversion rates, but Kopitar, as mentioned above, is money.

Devils' forecheck was nasty tonight but we were able to survive it. Brown almost gave the game away on that head-scratcher pass to the middle of the net in our own zone...cross-bar is a goalie's best friend.

New Jersey carried much of the game. A lot of time in our own zone, way too many turnovers in neutral ice. Somehow got out of regulation tied, and responded in OT.

Onto game 3

Mysterious, sudden disappearances later explained by injury.

No secret that Kovy had lower back issue that caused him to miss Game 2 against Philly.

It's back.

Look at him, he takes no hard strides, glides everywhere. No wind up on his shot. Refuses to engage any defenders physically, he didn't get within three yards of Mitchell or Scuderi in Game 2. Explosion is not there. He's hurt for sure. If it's not his back, it's something else, he is not right.

EDIT: Brown play, that's karma in action lol. Horrendous turnover right onto Kovy's stick in the slot. Yes, Quick got a sliver of it with his blocker or the handle of his stick. Sure, Kopitar had a good stick there. Still, it was a centimeter or so from being a goal.

they kept talking about how they went untested and they hadn't faced anyone like the Devils before. But that's what was said before every series. They just played so well they made everybody look bad. Now the Devils aren't playing bad and breaking under the Kings pressure and the Kings are still finding ways to win. The scariest part about this team is they are young and all locked up for a while. Off the top of my head Quick is the only one not locked up. I think Lombardi and company are loading up the truck full of money they are going to drop at his door step in the off season right now. But once he is signed we have a solid team for the next 4 or so years.

no team lower than a five has ever won, so let's not act as though this is an every year thing. these two teams could just as easily been seeded 3 and 4, it was that tight.

in other sports (MLB, NFL), wild cards go deep all the time.

kings were a different team at the end of the year than they were at the beginning.

and are we really complaining than there isn't a complete throw-away for a first round? that every team that gets in has a fighting chance? that teams can make themselves competitive quickly?

at any time you got multiple franchises that are among the greatest in their sports...both pro and college....playing in the same city...

It would have been impossible for the Kings to get in the spotlight..

What you're seeing as bandwaggoning is a bit misleading..it's not like the Kings were the only game in town ..a bad game..then theyre good and folks jump on... the Kings have been way down the list for sports attention in Los Angeles.... and honestly not the most popular sport in the US and the west coast..

this a great story for LA ...and sports really....and 8th seed in any sport going undefeated on the road and dominating the post season like this is really historic....

New Jersey plateaued a little against NYR but they have been FEEBLE at the end of games. Two straight games the win was right there for the taking and they had ZERO emotion. They played about 25 minutes of decent hockey tonight. Once they got scored on, they were screwed.

I still think Kovalchuk is hurt. Parise has just been OK. Elias looks slow since first game.

Kings are getting good piecces of these guys.

Kopitar is finally playing BIG. He always plays well but in the playoffs he is using his size and power more. Love it.

Parise looked bad today. There were a couple of times he threw some half assed checks and let players get by him. He looked beaten today.

I love that he is shining. He really is one of the most underrated players in hockey.

it would have been way worse to see 'A Choking Situation' Guy on the other end of the sweep.

Then again, the players quitting on him & getting him fired for Sutter is sorta what propelled them from eight-seed to 5/5/Fo/Fo Cup Champ status anyway so its a moot point.

as I was in a freshman dorm a few stops away from Boston Garden at the time.

Some of the shots he'd pull off & the ease with which he'd take a puck off you were pure bullshit.

Tip if playing with the Bruins: put Glen Wesley in as the second defender with Borque over Don Sweeney (the game used to auto-fill Sweeney in despite Wesley being much better in it).

In response to Reply # 65

If anyone is trying to pull the move or any kind of deke, you can just body block a mofo into the ice with your keeper.

The AI is much better in '93 and there is fighting (it's a far more defensive game even with the move, '94 is really really fast paced, you're basically throwing half-ice outlet passes with your keeper every time lol) but I have a really hard time going back from '94 because it added the one-timers and the manual keeper control which changed everything.

Marty made a great save on Gagne and a couple other sharp ones. But Brown, that was just lucky, he was at the mercy of a bounce there, if it banked off him one foot to the left it's a goal.

Penner shoots wide. Brown fires wide on a one timer. Kopitar and Voynov (well deflected by Williams) each ding the post. That Lewis breakaway, nice play by Gagne and Lewis got the puck through Marty. He did not get a piece of it, told me himself. It just got through and veered wide, dumb luck.

Kings had their share of dumb luck in first couple games, the Kovalchuk save with seven or eight seconds left. Breaks even out over time.

fuck Williams looked like the only one that wanted the win out there. Kopi looked slow. Brown looks slow. We did great when we were playing physical in the first. Once we went away from that they took over. Bring Clifford in for game 6. Let him let loose on them.

with him, I think PDB has a bit more flexibility in his lines, and it's seemed to re-energize Parise. Speaking of, the Devils' forecheck has been much more precise and effective these last two games.

they just couldn't finish. Games 1,2 and 3 have been awfully similar. This time it was the Kings who couldn't get any shots to fall.

95. "I kind of like Parise's series before last night"
In response to Reply # 92

Game 1 he gave them a fighting chance, made a good push at the end of the second period and got them going. He was around the puck, generating some offensive chances.

I thought he was doing his job for the most part.

Brown, too, I mean his scoring is not that consistent but the thing he does well and takes pride in, he was doing. He had some real jump early in the game, Williams was easily their best forward.

New Jersey's defense has been kind of underrated, they are battling hard and playing a little above their heads.

Last night's game was over in the first period to me. First of all, giving up a lead (even if you tie it later) has been the kiss of death in the last three Final series. Secondly, the Kings whipped their ass for about 15 minutes and had nothing to show for it. Then they go a man down, Zajac very nearly scored, Parise did, bang.

I am surprised it took New Jersey so long to test Quick's puckhandling. Outside of the rush I don't think they should ever carry the puck in. Make him play it. He is pretty terrible at it and it's really the only thing that shakes his confidence.

I bet Sutter chains him to the posts in Game 6. I like Kings to close this thing out, have faith in them channeling the anxiety and negative emotion in a positive way. Sutter is good at managing his guys. Devils I think played their hand strategically, executed pretty well and still didn't clearly outplay them in Game 5.

In response to Reply # 95

its not just that he handles the puck bad. But he constantly makes poor decisions on when to leave the net and go after a puck. I mean I've only been watching hockey for 3 years but half way through my first season I was yelling at the TV every game, STAY IN THE CREASE! It's amazing how he could be so good between the posts and so bad out of them.

96. "no but he's made saves at key times e.g. richards, stoll"
In response to Reply # 94

stoll breakaway could have been a turning point. that was the biggest save he's made on a breakaway or partial breakaway, though not the best (kick save on gagne game 4).

i thought a little too much was made of him "stealing" the games but he's outplayed quick the last couple, especially game 5.

also didnt think much of the kings hitting posts. two big ones, williams early and richards late, eh, the shots were not close, went off the outside of post and net respectively.

both teams are kind of doing their thing just enough to stay competitive. there's little things that are off about both their games.

kovalchuk had some OK chances last night, that pp glove save by quick was his best stop of the night. overall kovy looks dead though, playing at 40%.

I am sure this will lead to another stop on the local train that has been his journeyman-ass career but I wasn't offended by the play. He could have let up, would have had a hard time stopping. Scuds took the the hit to make the play, worked out OK but kind of dangerous.

Not a suspendable thing (not an issue now anyway lol) and could have easily been a minor. Scuds got his nose split, that much blood, bang, major.

Even so, they gave up THREE power-play goals. They made the 10% Kings PP look like Harvey and Geoffrion were on the points there.

Determined play by Kings and Devils maybe a little sluggish there at the start did them in. Bernier can be the scapegoat but they opened the floodgates. How many majors do we see killed off? On average there's maybe one goal. THREE!?! Wow.

any which way, yeah i was excited for the boys. williams is a great dude, i was fucking irate when philly dealt him for markov, although they needed defense badly and it kinda sorta plugged a hole. carolina laughed all the way to the bank with that one though.

he was jacked, he danced for at least two hours non-stop after the game and i left at some point.

happy for gagne, wonderful to see him back in action for an opportunity to at least dress and have some good shifts.

richards and carter got the first laugh, i still like what the flyers got for them in the deals. win/win.

If Marty were leaving, they would have lined something up behind him.

He was also loose and lively all series.

Had they won, I think he would have contemplated going out on top. As it is, I get the sense he will be back.

If not, Lou better call his buddy Dean and get Bernier.

Lewis is a heady player who works his ass off. I could not have been happier to see him get a couple tonight, classic that one of Sutter's role guys would come up big out of nowhere. Shades of Martin Gelinas!

Mitchell is a class player, a thoughtful guy and one of the ballsiest dudes on the ice at any given moment. Wonderful for him to get this moment. He was a force for them this year, too, easily the most overlooked star on the team and I do mean star.

-Kissed the Cup
-Hoisted the Cup above his head
-Drank Champagne from the Cup
-Danced with Elisa Cuthbert (she was cool about it and as personable as you can get for someone superhumanly gorgeous)
-Said to Mike Richards "FUCKIN' BEAUTY, EH!"
-Slapped hands and talked shit with Willie Mitchell
-Chilled on the ice for an hour and change
-Congratulated every single member of the winning team with a handshake
-Had a long convo with a Hall of Fame columnist
-Took a picture with the Cup and the captain who won it

PLUS I DIDN'T EVEN HAVE TO USE MY AK!

Today was a good day ...

I did talk to Bob post game and then at the reception. He was thrilled. He had his call written down and blurted it out. Said he wasn't gonna retire because he wanted to go a whole year saying "The STANLEY CUP CHAMPION Los Angeles Kings" as much as possible on broadcasts. Both guys were really enjoying it, between Foxy's time as a player and both their time in the both they've got 70+ years with the organization combined.

Sounds like a cooler setting to be sure in the Big House. I am debating whether or not to go for the Winter Classic there. I feel kinda spoiled that all the ones I have been the weather has been pretty decent if not very nice. Plus the size of the stadium means the press box will surely be in a horrendous position to actually see the game. Tough call, but it's been a long time since I visited Ann Arbor.

Got to meet the Great One during this series also, he was there for Game 4. Your boy Kobe showed up in the earlier rounds. I cruised right past him, zero interest in meeting him but I did take a look at his kicks, some pretty smooth lavender Dunk His.

Although the way things are looking could be two non-playoff teams. I am sure Detroit will get it together, spend their money somehow. They have a pretty good group of prospects, could see them making shrewd trades rather than competing in an open market for Parise and Suter. I just can't see them paying top dollar like that, never been their style to splurge against that kind of competition.

I can't say I had a huge emotional investment here but I take full credit for the fact that I took over the beat full-time in January and they started winning. What can I say? I'm like the Phil Jackson of hockey writers, latching onto contenders.

I can easily say I have never been this emotionally invested in any season of watching my two other pro sports teams(Raiders/Dodgers) Baseball has always been my first love but damn nothing beats watching hockey. When my wife was pregnant and we found out it was a boy all I could think of is taking him to a Dodgers game and coaching his little league teams. He attended his first Dodger game this year at 2 years old. But we took him to a Kings game at 6 months old. He knows half of the Kings roster by face and number. The only Dodger players he knows are Kemp and Eithier. We have become a hockey family. At this point I would buy Kings season tickets before the Dodgers.

I used to be, sure. Way back when, before the 94 strike.

But I've NEVER claimed to be a fan. I even checked in a few years ago when the Kings got Roenick and asked the experts what the dude had in the tank. But I just said stuff about LA in here.

So, at any rate, go fuck yourself.

i did see that guy at the lil soiree though.

also there was jackie johnson from CBS, who i wish was sent to the locker room to break up the monotony of old flabby white men with halitosis.

i will say for sure that meeting a lot ny/nj writers, basaglia's assessment of sports writers became a lot more true lol, pretty much torn from the page of one of his tirades. more than a few bigots with bad breath.
