"2012 Baltimore Orioles---Are They For Real???"

I am cautiously optimistic about my first place O's. They have this crazy way of starting out ok for the first month or two, and then once it's All-Star break, the pitching goes south for the rest of the hot, humid, B-more summer. So far, so good though. What are your thoughts? Adam Jones is playing at a level closer to his five-tool potential, and so far the pitching depth and bullpen is a plus.

Johnson, Strop, Chen, Hammel...

Jones having a career year, Hardy and Weiters might

yall seen what Avery has done so far since he came up?

even Betmit has been a smart addition to this team and even Kevin Gregg is pitching lights out right now

bearing fruit from some of Mcphails late moves and Duquette looking smarter than folx thought he'd be

We were in first place as late as July 25 and got a national TV game vs the Braves.

We were in SI, on Sports center all that feel good stuff

We still lost 90 games after going 18-38 the last 2 months of the season.

Like I said, I'd love to see it happen, but it's a loooong season, and teams that aren't supposed to be good often don't wind up good at the end.

But there's the core of a good team in there. The difficulty will be keeping the Jones/Wieters window open and affordable for Bundy/Machado.

Are they for real? Maybe not. Am I enjoying it? Hell yes.

I've been waiting 15 years for the Orioles to be watchable again. Landing the Ravens and watching them have success has certainly eased the pain, but it's really great to be into the games again.

I said if we could go at least .500 through that tough stretch in May I would be all in. It's probably unlikely we make the playoffs but I certainly think +.500 is possible. I don't think the pitching will stay as effective, but we do have Britton on the way who will hopefully replace Hunter. Who knows what Roberts will contribute but guys like Andino and Avery are really stepping up.

One thing that is different about this team is they never stop fighting back. I feel like we are in every game, unlike the last decade when you just KNEW we would lose.

good deal, might have overpaid a bit because he's raking currently but we had to lock up our best player long term. I think the pen is for real, but worried the starters will come back to earth. I like the young guys on this team, and of course we have the best line up in the AL!

33. "BPro - The Callup: Manny Machado"
In response to Reply # 0

I saw him play last week against New Britain. He had a tough night at the plate with a single against one of BJ Hermsen's few strikeouts and an infield fly. What really impressed me was his defense, though. He's really smooth and seemed to make every throw to first, regardless of angle, look exactly the same. That his athleticism comes out in something as small as his footwork like that is a big deal.

http://www.baseballprospectus.com/article.php?articleid=17963

August 9, 2012
The Call-Up
Manny Machado
by Kevin Goldstein

The situation: Winners of five in a row and suddenly tied for the lead in the wild-card race, the Baltimore Orioles made an aggressive and surprising move Wednesday night, calling up their top position prospect in Machado, who just turned 20 last month. Machado was hitting .266/.352/.438 in 109 games at Double-A Bowie and was 16-for-33 with 32 total bases in his past nine games.

Background: The third overall pick in the 2010 draft, Machado has not put up dominant numbers in the minors, but he's been pushed aggressively through the system and was consistently young for his level. Though Machado struggled after a promotion to High-A Frederick last year, the Orioles shot him up to the upper levels, where with good but not great numbers, his scouting reports remain strong.

What he can do: Machado is one of the top position players in the game, but it's fair to question if he's ready for the big leagues. He's a big, athletic infielder at 6-foot-3 and 185 pounds and is a true five-tool player with at least average tools across the board. He has a good feel for the strike zone and a quick bat with enough strength for 20-plus home runs down the road, although he's still growing into his power, which is primarily to the pull side at this time. He crushes fastballs but still has some issues with breaking balls. Drafted as a shortstop, Machado has very good defensive fundamentals and a cannon for an arm, but scouts question whether he has enough quickness to remain at shortstop. While he's played only two games at third base in his pro career, he's been worked out at the position constantly, leading to his promotion. He's an average runner with good instincts who should steal 10-15 bases annually.

Immediate big league future: Sources close to the situation indicate that Machado will become the primary third baseman for the Orioles, but it's unfair to expect a Mike Trout or Bryce Harper type of performance from him. He's exceedingly young and inexperienced, and might look overmatched at times. The Orioles think he'll be an upgrade both offensively and defensively over Mark Reynolds, and he does have a chance to exceed expectations, as scouts have seen him as a low-energy player at times who could ramp up his game at the top level. He's a high-risk/high-upside player for 2012, but for leagues where he'll get shortstop positional eligibility because of his minor league time, he could be worth the risk.

Long term: J.J. Hardy is signed through 2014, but Machado is still seen as the shortstop of the future in Baltimore. For now he's a third baseman, and at either position, he's an excellent long-term play.

Much better facility than Nashville, which is AAA. I parked for free. I got a footlong hotdog that was actually good instead of just a novelty. We saw three Twins prospects I was actually excited about as well as Manny Machado. And we bullshitted with one of the ushers for almost the entire game. Lots of fun.

It'd be cool to go again. New Britain isn't coming back, but now that Bundy has been promoted it'd be worth another trip even without the Twins connection.

I half wonder if they are wanting to stretch him out to see what happens if they fall out of contention in the East and WC, then bring him up for one gimmick start in the majors after rosters expand and placate the fans.

And what is a Rock Cat?

the O's still are in a TIGHT race for that wild card, and they can still push the Yankees for division title...the wild card is more realistic, but at this point in the season they are doing the unexpected...Machado just gave the team a little more of a lift with his heroics over two games...the saga continues

This team was expected to be in last place again this year, now on September 1 they are only 2 games out of first.

The coaching job he's done this year has been masterful, especially considering their pitching staff and the GM constantly trying to mess up the chemistry.

the run differential shit is way overblown. (If I understand it correctly, outside of your games with Texas and Anaheim, your run diff would be in the positive?) Sweep the Yanks while they're down please and continue being a great story in baseball.

(But I will say that Bob Melvin should be in the discussion for Manager of the Year. Whichever of the two teams - O's or A's - gets into the playoffs should have Manager of the Year.)

I'll run back to the Oakland A's post now.

huge series with the jankees this weekend. Hammel starting Friday. Showalter has made all the right moves and even if we don't make the 'offs the team has overachieved and killed it in 1 run games. I fear the Rays and A's more than NY. Natty Boh's, lots of ho's, lets get it O's!

75. "I was cheesing in Section 312 on Saturday"

Hard. When I was a kid, our 13-game packs were a few sections closer to home plate, a few rows down. Feel at home in the upper deck in right field, with the view of the tower downtown that looks like it has a giant blue marble in the top.

We spent the day visiting the homes and schools and neighborhoods where my dad and my grandparents grew up. Both sides of the family go way back in Baltimore, my mom's side all the way to the 1830s. Even met the couple that bought the home my dad grew up in back in 1965, when the neighborhood was going from all-Jewish to all-black, and still live there (!).

Had lunch at Miss Shirley's. On the wall across from our table they had a picture of the 1991 (?) Orioles lined up for the national anthem in Memorial Stadium (where I went to my first games). Lots of familiar jerseys: Cal and Billy Ripken, Brady Anderson, Randy Milligan, Craig Worthington, Joe Orsulak, Chris Hoiles, etc. etc.

Walked down to the stadium in the evening and got to our seats right at the national anthem, in time to join the "O!" thing. I've been to a few games since the late 1990s, but not many since I was living in the midwest from 2001-2009 and was in grad school in NJ thereafter. Was always good to get chances to go, but when the attendance numbers started dwindling (or either getting inflated by Yankees or Red Sox fans taking over the stadium) it obviously hadn't been the same.

The stadium being so full of orange and black, and full of so much enthusiasm, where the whole stadium felt so invested in every pitch, where players like Jones and Machado and Jim Johnson felt so embraced--The nostalgia for me was uber-heavy. The O's fans still have a blue collar, Wild Bill Hagy-infused attitude that made it a fun team to have grown up with and to still support--even if my family is a generation or two removed from that world, and even if we had been less attentive over the previous couple of years.

Winning the way we did--manufacturing our first run, going up on a big home run, pulling back ahead on another jack by our young phenom (the lowest HR I've ever seen in Camden Yards), our bullpen holding tough--we all commented that it was a good game to go to. Except that like half of our wins have been something like that.

Shout out to the drunk old guy in front of us who started yelling ballistically when Johnson came on for save #49 to his equally drunk brother (?) a few seats down: "WE'RE GONNA BE EVEN WITH THE YANKEES! IN SEPTEMBER! WITH FIVE (sic) GAMES TO GO! J.J. IS GONNA GET EM! WE'RE GONNA BE EVEN WITH THE YANKEES! WE COULD WIN IT! WE COULD WIN IT!"

Another shout out to whoever seredipitously picked this year to unveil the statues in the area above the bullpen in left--glad to see Brooks Robinson as the last of them to be honored, on Saturday. I hardly ever went to that part of the ballpark, but we walked over after the game and they are very well done--Eddie Murray's stance is perfect. My mom pointed out the accuracy of Palmer's wind-up to my dad as we walked over, and some older, overweight woman turned to her and said, "yeah, and every time I walk by I pat. his. ass."

(no faith in Dice K beating the Yanks)and host a deflated Rangers team at home. I was hoping they would have saved Tillman for the WC, but Buck has made all the right moves. Go O's!
