Kenny Dalglish sacked due to Premier League shortcomings, says Ayre

Liverpool's managing director, Ian Ayre, insists they had to sack Kenny Dalglish because results did not match up to longer-term expectations.

Dalglish won the Carling Cup, the club's first trophy for six years, and reached the FA Cup final but an eighth-placed Premier League finish resulted in Fenway Sports Group dismissing him after 16 months in charge.

Ayre said no matter how much work had been done off the pitch in terms of the structure and business of the club if results did not match up then change was inevitable.

"The most important element which isn't quite there is the football," said the managing director, who admitted they had already had numerous expressions of interest in the vacant manager's position but stressed their search had not yet properly begun.

"If you don't believe the results are right and feel 37 points off the champions and 17 points off Champions League pace is a long distance you have to make a change.

"You believe you have to improve that part because without it things begin to fall away. We have to get the football right. Should Kenny have been given longer? People will always have a different view.

"We had to make a decision as a board and we have to stand by it and move forward. The history the club was built on was about success and that means success in the league, which leads to Champions League football, and also winning trophies.

"No one is saying we didn't enjoy winning the Carling Cup and getting to the FA Cup final but ultimately the backbone of football now is the Premier League and European football at the highest level.

"It was important we moved forward in that direction and results are what mattered this year."

Ayre insisted that with strong foundations now laid by FSG the focus could be about football. "We set on a path here just over a year ago with new ownership to try to restore the club to a position it expects to be in English and European football," he added.

"Part of that process was building a foundation on which we could compete financially and therefore invest in our team to compete on the pitch.

"We have made big strides as a business, our revenues are as high as they have ever been and you take those revenues and then invest those into the team to invest on the pitch."

On the removal of Dalglish, an iconic figure at Anfield, from his second spell in charge Ayre said: "It goes without saying that these decisions are difficult but they are far more difficult when it is someone who is iconic and respected in the fabric of the football club.

"You have to make the same decisions for the right reasons but they are compounded when it is such a great person who has given so much to the club."

They're 10 games into their season, they have qualifying round for the Champions League in mid-late July, and he has said he doesn't want to move his family again until his kids are older. He's not the sort of guy that would move his family and chase a dollar (he's very wealthy) for a club that he doesn't care about and will be hugely restricted with.

There' a guy on the villaTalk forums that has access to flight records for Lerner's jet, and has been able to give clues for our last three manager searches based on where the plane goes. Around when I first posted, he had the story that the plane was scheduled to go from BhX to Kristiansund airport as soon as Lerner had come in from the states. Since then, it's been a gas to follow on twitter.

7. "Mumblecore Capello announces his interest in Chelski job"
In response to Reply # 0

Italians back stabbing Italians...lovely...

Fabio Capello has made it known to Chelsea's hierarchy that he is eager to take up the reins at Stamford Bridge this summer as the former England coach seeks a return to top-flight club management.

The Italian is due to attend Saturday's Champions League final in Munich, which marks the last game of Roberto Di Matteo's impressive tenure as interim first-team coach. Chelsea are still evaluating who will fill the position vacated by André Villas-Boas in the first week of March but, with their chances of securing Roman Abramovich's first choice – Pep Guardiola – appearing remote, Capello has moved to promote his own candidacy.

The 65-year-old's availability had been explored by intermediaries apparently working with Chelsea's blessing earlier this year once it became clear that Villas-Boas's spell in charge was unraveling. That would have been on a short-term basis – the former Liverpool manager Rafael Benítez was also discussed at the time – and, like the Spaniard, Capello would have considered the role only on a more permanent basis. The Italian, who does not operate with an agent, has been contacted by brokers claiming to be working on behalf of the club and has expressed his desire to be considered. He has not as yet been offered the job.

Capello resigned as England coach in February and has spent the last three months between Italy, Spain, Dubai, London and at his family home in Lugano. He has received offers from Spain and Russia and, having opted against retirement, is seeking a return to an ambitious leading European club. He has accepted opportunities will be limited in Italy and Spain and, with his compatriot Marcello Lippi having been appointed by Guangzhou Evergrande – an £8m-a-year role for which Capello had also been considered – considers the Premier League his most likely route back.

His reputation may have been damaged in this country by England's toils at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa but his record as a club manager remains impressive. He has won nine titles in 16 seasons with Milan, Real Madrid, Roma and Juventus – his two Juve titles having since been revoked – although his sole success in the Champions League remains the Rossoneri's victory over Barcelona in 1994. His appointment would find favour with the likes of John Terry, whose removal from the England captaincy had prompted the Italian's resignation earlier this year.

Capello still owns an apartment in Chelsea and recently expressed a desire to work in the Premier League. "England would be very interesting for me because I know very well the teams and the players and everything would be less difficult," he said in an interview with The Times this month. "I've refused some really good offers for a lot of money, from clubs in China and different places in the world. I want one more challenge.

"At the end of my career it would be interesting to find a team with big motivation to arrive at the top. I want to manage a team that is able to play in the Champions League and fight for lots of trophies. If I don't find the kind of club I want I'll return to being a pundit."

Chelsea had quickly identified Guardiola as their primary target following Villas-Boas's sacking but the 41-year-old has reiterated he will now be taking a year-long sabbatical from the game after leaving Barcelona. José Mourinho, another who was under consideration, is to remain at Real Madrid, leaving the likes of the France coach, Laurent Blanc, and Capello as viable alternatives.

Di Matteo, who has claimed the FA Cup and could win the club's first European Cup against Bayern Munich, has intimated in recent weeks that he does not expect to be offered the role on a permanent basis despite his successes during his 10-week spell in temporary charge.

We're adding a ton of firepower across the front lines with Hazard,Marin, probably Hulk as well and more than likely another CM.

In response to Reply # 13

would never had let that happen.

As to his style, he's a small outside-in winger that operates mainly on the left but is right footed. AKA, he's a hell of a lot like Mata, but faster and capable of some long hits. His ego is massive (Nasri times 10) and will be the most difficult thing for whomever the new manager is there to deal with.

He would have been a perfect at Arsenal under Wenger's tutelage but I knew it was an extreme long-shot because dude has been asking for 200k a week in wages....ahhh, damn. O well.

Shinji Kagawa's transfer to Manchester United moves a step nearer
• Japan midfielder yet to agree personal terms
• Borussia Dortmund player expected to cost £17.5m

Shinji Kagawa's transfer to Manchester United from Borussia Dortmund for a total of €22m (£17.m) has moved closer but the midfielder has yet to agree personal terms and sign for the club.

The Japanese midfielder is back in his homeland and it is understood that Thomas Kroth, the 23-year-old's agent, travelled there from Germany in the past few days to discuss the move.

An initial bid of €18m from United was rejected last week but Dortmund have now reportedly agreed a fee that will be worth €22m with add-ons for a player who cost them just €350,000 from the Japanese club Cerezo Osaka.

The United manager Sir Alex Ferguson watched Kagawa a fortnight ago when he scored in Dortmund's 5-2 win over Bayern Munich in the German Cup final. He scored 13 goals in 31 league games as Dortmund won the Bundesliga from Bayern by eight points and he fits the profile currently adhered to by United of a young player who could improve and not cost a premium price.

Kagawa currently earns a modest salary of between €750,000 to €1m and was offered up to €2.5m to re-sign for Dortmund. But as he is intent on playing in the Premier League it is not thought his wage demands to join United will prove a stumbling block.

Roman hasn't learned a single thing. He's still in love with the big names, and he is still into remitting loads of cash to achieve glory.

the AVB situation taught him nothing
Torres taught him nothing
Schevchenko taught him nothing.

More than likely, Hazard's transfer fee is going to be 30-35 million, and he is going to get a salary in the range of 150,000 to 200,00 weekly, so the total cost of the transfer is going to go for abut 50-60 million dollars.

terrible.

I cannot believe this tool is going to play for our side, and when you couple that with the self-centered Torres, well, the bridge is going to be diva central.

Hazard is talented, and he won player of the year 2 years in a row, but that was in the french league. The EPL is a totally different league, so there is no guarantee that he will put up great numbers. Can he deal with the physical play that he is going to see in every game?

Also, why on earth would Roman buy a young, 21 year old player, who he plans to build around, when he already has 2 young players with similar talents on the reserve team? Piazon/Mceachran play the same position, and they are mighty gifted. Why not build around them instead of forking over 60 million dollars for a guy who is going to cause friction on the pitch and off of it??.....Give the youth a chance

It's a slap in the face to the reserve team, and it proves that roman does not have faith in chelsea's youth. I could see if it were a veteran player in his prime, and the youth would learn under his wing, but it's not, so the move is totally illogical.

After what Torres said and did after the CL cup,and the fact that chelsea gave into his rants by giving him the keys to the main striker position, and now the signing of Hazard the Tool, it is going to be hard for me to watch chelsea next season

What is happening to my team?...Where is the leadership going to come from? Where is the toughness going to come from?

Also, RDM is not going to get the job. That is pretty much written on the wall, which is sad. RDM and Drogba literally saved our season, and now, those two will not be a part of chelsea anymore.

The next manager is going to have his hands full trying to figure out how to make everything work. We now have 14 mid/wingers:

raul, essien, malouda, mata, romeu, marin, kevin, piazon, mceachran, mikel, lamps, hazard, sturridge, ramires

Hazard expects to be the number 10, and he wants the jersey( yeah, just fuck mata and all the hard work he put in last year), and I know
marin has to be scratching his head right now regarding his role at the bridge.

All torres had to do was accept his new ability as a left winger, instead of crying and bitching about a position he is no longer gifted at. That would have allowed us to focus mainly on the striker position and the right back position( I still say we should move essien to right back. He played rb in 08, and it would help preserve his career):

They way it should be next year:

--ivan--luiz-terry-cole---

----ramires-mikel----

---marin-mata-torres--

---Lavezzi(Demba ba)----

(subs: mceachran, romeu, essien, piazon, sturridge, demba ba, kevin, bertrand, malouda, cahill, lamps, raul)

I prefer Lavezzi over Hulk( and it's not even close), and demba ba would be a good pick up considering his release clause is only 5-7mil, and newcastle refuse to give him an extension, so that means he is available. He would make for a nice insurance piece on top of getting a main striker. demba ba brings length, power and a nice aerial game, and there is no way a team can survive without an aerial game in the EPL. no way.

Hulk is overrated to me, and he is not worth the money. Lavezzi would be the better buy, and the way he played against us in the CL proved the he would be able to hold his own in the EPL if given the opportunity.

Roman is a blessing and a curse.....can't wait to see what the clean up job will be after the first half of the season.

In response to Reply # 0

http://uk.eurosport.yahoo.com/30052012/58/premier-league-rodgers-become-liverpool-manager.html

The 39-year-old Northern Irishman rejected an initial approach from Fenway Sports Group (FSG) due to the large number of candidates reportedly being considered for the role.

But FSG, who had already held talks with Wigan boss Roberto Martinez, made a renewed approach to Swansea chairman Huw Jenkins on Tuesday night, with Rodgers on this occasion keen to hold discussions with Anfield chiefs.

Those talks were held on Wednesday afternoon and Rodgers has asked to leave so he can become Kenny Dalglish's successor, with the two clubs now holding discussions over compensation.

Jenkins said in a statement: "I was contacted by Liverpool and they expressed their wish to speak to Brendan regarding their vacancy.

"I had a discussion with Brendan to talk about their interest and his views on whether he wanted to speak to Liverpool.

"He expressed his wish with me to do that and he has spoken to Liverpool.

"Following on from discussions with Liverpool's owners Brendan has informed us that he would like to take up their offer to manage Liverpool.

"At the moment we are currently in talks with the owners to agree compensation.

"We hope to finalise that within the next 24 hours."

Eden Hazard: 192 apps, 50 goals and 30 assists.

Shinji Kagawa: 198 apps, 86 goals and 45 assists from (possibly)a tougher league.

one is going for 17 mil

the other is going for 40 mil.

interesting.

1. If you're gonna list the price be consistent and accurate. Kagawa's fee is reportedly 17.6M GBP. Eden Hazard's is 32M GBP. Both on the front page of the Guardian right now if you wanna double check.

2. Anybody that watched the two of them can immediately tell you the difference. There is a reason Hazard is the most sought after prospect in Europe and Kagawa isn't. I like Kagawa too, intelligent player.

3. Part of the reason to be excited to get Hazard is the fact that he will make the team so much money when we sell him in 3 years to Real Madrid. I don't know the source of your anger but its kinda funny to be honest.

Naw. It's not kind of funny at all, and a lot people at the bridge are not happy about it. You should definitely research.

And Hazards transfer fee is going to be 35 million-40 million. You will see when the actual numbers come out. Chelsea FC the official site is the only one that matters.

1.The guy is a tool. period.

2. Why spend a total of 60 million dollars to get hazard, who is 21 years old, when you already have 2 players who are similar at the bridge who you can build around. That is how you make money and save money!

If he were to build around mceachran/ lucas, 2 players who are under a cheap contract, and if they were to turn into huge talents, their value would triple, and it would be a huge profit for Roman.

3. Manchester United showed everyone how it should be done. They purchased Ronaldo for 11 -13 million dollars, so if he would have flopped, they wouldn't have lost any money. Plus they would have still been able to sell him at the 11-13 million dollar price because of his young age and the price was a low price anyway. Ronaldo became the greatest player in the world, and MU made ,I believe ,70 million dollars off of him. ...that is how it should be done.

4. See Torres. Torres cost Roman a total of 70 million dollars( 50 mil on the transfer fee and 20 mil in salary), and since he turned into a bust, his value dropped. Roman tried to sell him big time in January, but no team was willing to pay more than 15 million for him. That meant roman would have lost fucking 35 million dollars, so he had to keep torres, and he had to force the play of torres so that he could get some type of return on his investment. ..Money down the fucking drain.

5. In order for Hazard to live up to his total price, which means, when it is all said and done, it will be 60 million dollars( transfer fee and salary), he is going to have to be the next ronaldo or messi. There is no in between, and he can't be average. If he turns out to be avg or falls below expectations, his value will drop , and roman will lose money. It would be torres all over again.

6. See Newcastle. Newcastle purchased Cissie for fucking 9 million dollars. Cissie has turned into a god, so his value is now in the range of 30-35 million dollars( transfer fee). If newcastle were to sell him, they would make a 25 million dollar profit. And if he flops next year, it's still not a huge loss because they only paid 9 million for him, and they would still be able to sell him at that price because it is a low price..win-win situation ...buy low! sell high!

Roman always goes full tilt on player purchases..always...and he always loses money in the end. This "make or break" shit has to stop.

And if he buys Hulk, then that will be 130-150 million dollars spent on 2 players, when he could have spent a third of that for far better players.

The fact that I have to explain this to you is extremely sad. ..The High Risk, High Reward philosophy never wins, especially under roman...Roman is the russian character in ROCKNROLLA:Spending money no matter what it takes, and a clean up in the end is always needed.

Best bang for your money:

Milos Krasic
De Buryne( which we already have)
Mario Götze
Younès Belhanda
Douglas Costa....

I can go on and on..Young nice gems....cheaper in price...

It's all about finding brighter jewels for at a low price ..

Chelsea excels when they buy low...they get great returns back:

ramires
luiz
mata
cahill ......

but when they buy high ...fail:

schevchenko
torres
avb( coach)
etc

why is so hard to understand?

First of all, some players are worth the money. If Hazard lives up to his potential, he definitely is worth all this and more.

Second, Gotze would cost even more than Hazard!! What are you possibly thinking putting him on that list? Not to mention that he's most probably not even available.

(and I put gotze up there because I feel he is better.)

WRONG

60 million for a 21 year old is way over the top ..especially when there are similar players already on the team in mccachran/ lucas who are far cheaper and should be given an opportunity

by giving hazard that contract, you pretty much saying he is going to be the next messi/ronaldo ....

and his arrogance will not play at chelsea....it got avb sacked, because
fans of chelsea do not play that.

This is why hazard probably would have been better off at Mancity.they are willing to endure big egos and arrogance ...they don't care about that

You think a player like Mario Balotelli would exist at chelsea??

please

The transfer is bad a one...financially, socially, etc

GO ask PSG about spending a shit load of money on big players....yeah, look how that is working out.

It's no way to a build a team, and it's a make or break situation....

You don't seem to understand the difference between a person who is an asshole and a person who is arrogant.

Being an asshole is fine at the bridge, because most chelsea fans are assholes, and chelsea is captained by the biggest asshole in the world.

But arrogance at the bridge?.. In the form, where one player thinks he is god's gift to the world? That does not exist at the bridge, and it never will.

You need to research some of the statements that hazards has stated,so far, throughout his career ....He has said some pretty outlandish shit. I'm talking the AVB standard here.

British papers can't wait to get a hold of him. Dude, they ate AVB alive, and they made it a point to get him terminated. Once he opened his mouth, and put himself on a pedestal, and above everybody in the media....Toast!.....The papers never stated anything positive about AVB.

That shit does not fly in london ...Notice how Anelka was in london compared to the bullshit he pulled in france.....

The other question I have is, how much time have you actually spent at Stamford Bridge?

LOL

thanks for the chuckle.

I just go by shit reported on CFC.com, and other Chelsea blogs and message boards.

inside reports are the best, and comical

As far as hazard goes, he has to be the next messi or ronaldo, anything else is a bust. ..and that's the problem with all this.

With this signing, he basically shitted on the youth again.....a lot of people are angry. ...technically, hazard isn't the problem. The signing itself is the problem.....just like sacking ancelotti and going with AVB .....

Roman has no fucking class, man

do you know the difference between head strong and arrogance?

Jose is head strong, and wants to play and win a certain way

AVB is tactical in the same way, but he also thought that he was better than everyone else, and that he knew more than the players( at the age of 34 mind you)...Jose never came off like that

" only person I have to answer to is roman"

dude, please.

^^^^^^^^ That's not being an asshole. That's saying "No matter what the FA or Capello says, and no matter how I act, I am always Captain." That's the epitome of arrogance.

Hazard more so, because Ligue 1 is less physical than the Bundesliga, but both players are coming from leagues with substantial winter breaks (4 weeks for France, 6 weeks for Germany). Meanwhile, they will be playing the most thick-and-fast portion of the season when they are used to resting or training in a warm climate somewhere.

but his problem was going into tackles TOO hard. He'd play two matches, pick up a red, play a match, get another red. And then, Alex McLeish loaned him out for last season. I think he's got a place in the side when Lambert gets named.

Cantona signed by Leeds in the winter window; Evra was also a winter signing and barely played the first year he was there.

Viera came from Milan, where he was riding pine
Cabaye and Petit adapted quickly, but they were also defensive midfielders. And Cabaye had a few spells of injury in January and February.

Malouda is a great example of what I'm expecting with these two: came over in the summer, made 27 starts his first year but was injured for 6 weeks from mid November to mid January, then, of the remaining 23 appearances, 7 were as a sub, 12 he didn't last the full 90.

I'm expecting Hazard and Kagawa will have dips similar to Silva and Mata, who came from a league with an even shorter break than France or Germany have.

Yeah, mata faded in the second half. His energy output was low, and he lost pace early in games. However, defenses did mark him more in the second half of the season, and he was introduced to more physical play.

It'll be interesting to see what his starts are like next season.

I believe Torres suffered from the same thing( at liverpool), but it caught up him with later, and his body and play broke down because of the nature of the league.

I wonder if it's better to get those kind of players for the second half of the season...Luiz came over in the second half, but he didn't have to
deal with another half season until the following new season. He was able to rest up during the summer then go back into play, which allowed his body to adjust. Same thing goes for Cissie. Came over from france, and instead of having to immediately deal with another half season, he gets to rest.

I don't understand this.

he is only 19

why should he leave?

they are doing the right thing with him, or he is doing the right thing. He wants to win at santos, and he is focusing on being a great one in brasil first, then moving on.

Once he wins at santos, and gets that WC, then he will go overseas.....

Soccer in America sucks, because soccer is not the main sport. Brasil is all soccer...so I don't see the relativity between neymar and donovan .

Technically, he does not have to go anywhere if brasil takes over the world ...brasil would be king again.

neymar is staying in brasil to win everything.....he wants it all: brazilian club cups, world cups, etc....

Also, this is bullshit!

They don't say this shit about spanish players, or the spanish national team. Most of those players stay in spain, and they play in spain, and the national team benefits from it.

brasil is following that same format. Ganso, lucas, neymar ....Keep them in brasil and let them build chemistry with one another.

26M euros, not dollars. Napoli spent 7 for him 5 years ago...since then, he's been good but nowhere near exceptional. He's not a prolific striker, does have decent assists numbers but I feel that's not really what PSG should be looking for since they already invested 42 mil in Pastore (and more in Menez). Considering all this, yes, 26M euros seems a little steep to me.

Torres.

I think lavezzi is worth that much, considering his work rate and play. Chelsea has a solid back line, and the way he played in the CL against them, pretty much sold me.

Could be just what you guys need to.

shit like this shows that he is a quality person: "Lavezzi stayed at Napoli for the 2010-11 season but was handed the number 22 jersey after he gifted his number seven to recently signed Edinson Cavani as a welcome gesture"

dude seems humble

but they said we'd have a 100 mil budget for transfer every year

I'm just not sure blowing a quarter of that on Lavezzi (who may or may not be better than Hoarau and Gameiro) is a good idea when as Benny pointed out, what Paris really needs is upgrades on defense, especially at the wing back positions. I'm even more skeptical because I know Lavezzi is not flashy enough a signing to satisfy their urge to make a splash, so I'm pretty sure they're going to spend even more oil money on somebody more famous, like Kaka or Eto'o...and add to the clusterfuck upfront. If anything I would have preferred they went all in for Neymar (or Ganso).

Hoarau and Gameiro are more traditional strikers, no?

Anyway, he's better than all four by a pretty comfortable margin imo. But I'll admit to being a pretty big fan. He's hardly dazzled for la albiceleste, but he's definitely been one of the best wingers in Italy the last 3 years. He'll shred ligue 1 defenses.

this is where it's getting obvious I was box score bobbying and I haven't seen Lavezzi play much (I have watched a grand total of 1 Napoli game this year).

the thing is, no matter how unlikeable they are, (can you say ungh) Menenenez played pretty well this season and Ancelotti was apparently happy w/them (whereas he's clearly got reservations about both Gameiro and Hoarau), so I wasn't thinking of Lavezzi as potential competition for Menenenez but rather as our new striker. If he's more of a wing/support type player, his relatively low scoring numbers are less of a concern...but 26 mil for a depth signing is a bit of an eyebrow raiser, still.

eh, I know, I know, I just need to get used to this http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e0cNQHXfdPU shit.

I'm feeling it myself: with La Roma being taken over by a big money spending American, I've caught myself joining in with a lot of the tifosi who lament doing shit like dropping 17 million euro on the likes of Osvaldo who, despite probably outplaying that contract this year, just isn't the type of player a squad like ours ever brought in for a tag like that. It's certainly a far cry from the days of Sensi ownership, where *every* purchase had to be smart, because we'd eventually *need* to make money on someone every summer due to debt and mismanagement.

You pride yourself to an extent on rooting for a club that isn't Hollywood*... and then they become exactly that. Bit of a cultureshock, I'm sure.

But it's like AceTales has been saying: big clubs spend big. And frankly, I've spent the entirety of my time as a Roma fan cheering for a squad that's been smart, been frugal, and more often than not been second place. So for the time being, I'm rain dancing until DeBenedetto buys us a brand new back 4. And Jovetic. And maybe Aquilani too or someshit. All of which I'm doing without shame.

* - I know PSG's always been upper tier in France, but obviously there's Ligue 1 Rich and then there's Oil Rich.

because, although you're right about the difference between ligue 1 rich and oil rich, I've dealt with provincial ass french fans trying to shame me about being Hollywood my whole life (PSG is really Hollywood in France, unlike AS Roma); so at this point, I'm good w/that.

but my problem is, I would like the team to develop a strong core and keep it together for a while. In the early 90s, when we had our little run, the team stayed pretty stable for a while (w/something like 7 undisputed starters for 3 years in a row). It seems like this ownership's ADD will not let that happen ever...if we win a CL in the next 2-3 years with this method, I guess I'll just have to shut the fuck up, but I feel it's tougher to root for a team w/ever changing line ups.

anyway...I came back to this post to say they were now seriously going after Thiago Silva. Good move.

55. "Lukaku "eating far fewer hamburgers," wants loan deal out "
In response to Reply # 0

http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2012/may/31/chelsea-romelu-lukaku-left-cold

The Belgium and Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku said he felt no joy at his club's Champions League and FA Cup triumphs and would rather be loaned out than repeat a season warming the bench. The 19-year-old, who moved to Chelsea from Anderlecht a year ago, started only four times last season and came on as a substitute on eight occasions.

Lukaku told De Standaard newspaper that he would often leave a match after 70 minutes if he was watching from the stands and said he felt no sense of achievement when Chelsea won the FA Cup, in which he played only a few minutes in the third round.

"When Kalou put the cup on my lap in the bus I asked him to take it away immediately. I didn't want to touch it because just as with the Champions League I had no part in it at all," he told the newspaper on Thursday. "I don't like people talking to me about the Champions League. It wasn't me, but my team that won the trophy."

Lukaku said he had improved in training, was eating far fewer hamburgers and, despite good performances in the matches he had started, had failed to win a regular place in the team. "Chelsea really wanted me last summer and paid a lot for me but after a while I thought are you just throwing money around?" he said.

Lukaku said he would seek talks with Chelsea's manager, whether that was the incumbent Roberto Di Matteo or a successor. "During the conversation with the manager I will see whether he's serious about me or not. If not, I will go away on loan. I have to play," Lukaku said.

His fellow Belgian, the goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, joined Chelsea from Racing Genk a year ago, but was immediately loaned out to the Spanish side Atlético Madrid and was part of their Europa League-winning team.

His speaks the truth.

Roman wanted Lukaku, because he saw drogba in him. That was the scouting report on Lukaku: Drogba 2.0.

However, AVB was never interested in him, and it was reported that AVB talked down to him, and that he didn't respect him as a football player. On the opposite side of that, though, AVB was willing to play lukaku during non-cl games and non-epl games, and it wasn't because he wanted to give lukaku a chance, he just wanted to rest the major players. That's how it is supposed to be. Bench players and reserved players, for most top teams, get to play in the fa cup and carling cup. I know you know that already

Avb gets sacked, and in comes Di Matteo.

Di Matteo is instilled with the same philosophy that propels Jose Mourinho: He focuses on the main players, and he overlooks the youth. That's the only negative about RDM. He is not into playing the young. However, AVB was into playing the youth, which is why sturridge and mceachran got some tick under his watch......RDM is a good guy, and he does not have anything personal against Lukaku. He just does not have patience for inexperience....

Roman's fault again. He promised the kid too much too soon.

Lukaku has every right to be angry. 2 Coaches treated him like shit. One did it intentionally, and the other did it unintentionally.

SAF wins again, and so does Arsene....Lukaku would probably be a starter on one of those teams.

His right. Play him or put him on fucking loan!

Winning the CL is probably going to be the worst thing to happen chelsea. Roman is about to go maximum carnage with spending.

: (

tribal is almost like the onion, but still, there has to be some rumbling with it. I've heard this elsewhere as well ..Not sure how valid el confidencial is.

http://www.tribalfootball.com/articles/chelsea-owner-abramovich-willing-buy-250m-messi-guardiola-3209961

Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich is prepared to buy Barcelona superstar Lionel Messi for Pep Guardiola.

El Confidencial says Abramovich wants to bring Pep Guardiola to Chelsea - and is willing to wait for the former Barca coach should he stick to his plans to take a year away from football to live in New York.

The prospect of buying Messi has been tentatively discussed and it's suggested Abramovich would not blink should Guardiola demand the Argentine's signing.

Messi's €250 million buyout clause is within Abramovich's reach and Chelsea's marketing men believe they would make their money back in shirt sales and merchandise.

Particularly the flip-flopping (sometimes within the actual game lol), his 'watch the games' angle that never makes sense because the poster he is replying to is often stating specific things from the game lol, and general lack of context regarding the people he is replying to (which plagues OKP in general but it's a lot easier to figure out who is who since the futbol circle is pretty small).

All that being said, I do admire his dedication, particularly his loyalty to the young guys. I still don't nor ever will understand his league vs league warfare even when it means rooting for rival/competitor clubs but that's his thing I guess lol.

Like right now, as best as I can tell, winning the CL is a very bad thing, because it resulted in Chelsea landing the most coveted transfer of the summer.

Take a second and try to think through that sentence.

Chelsea will get 100 million dollars from its cl win, so that will give him a huge opening to spend even more money.....With the FFP rules, you have to spend according to how much income is generated. .....

It's not the money that was the real prize, because roman is loaded. Winning the CL has taken the leash off, so he gets to spend like crazy now.

Roman wants chelsea to be an empire like real and barca, and he is going to do whatever it takes to get there ....

I don't want to wind up like PSG or MC .....

I see it coming, and now he's going after Pep with everything. He does not want any other manager.that is obvious.

I don't want chelsea to be a glitter dome. I don't want the huge following. i don't want them to become an overly commercial team......

I love being hated. I love being a direct, low scoring team. Chelsea has always been an in between team, and there is something really great about that: A top 5 or top 10 team, but not the TOP TEAM.

I want to stay Cinderella, but without the big, cheesy, plastic ending.

Um, but which Chelsea do you want? You want the second-rate squad that bounced back and forth between the PL/First Division and the Championship for most of the club's existence. Or do you want the post-2003 club that contends for trophies ever year? Because those are two different clubs, and the reason for that is that Chelsea were Man City before Man City were Man City.

I'm not even sure about that. If we stick with Prince and MJ's main period of dominance (ie the 80s), Everton would probably be Prince's to Liverpool's MJ. If we go overall, I guess United would be MJ, Liverpool would be...Elvis? and Arsenal would be Prince??

I give up. Such an awkward metaphore...

there is no real scouting process at chelsea ...roman is the jerry jones of the epl.

he gives the orders to bruce and ron on what players to get, and that is it.

we constantly go from coach to coach, from player to player, etc

Dude, he's totally disregarding a man who saved his team, and the season of the team. No one saw RDM coming ..no one....He wasn't a buy..Or a a selection....He was a rotated piece, because the actual investment( AVB) got canned.....last season wasn't even supposed to happen!...

I'll admit it. It was one lucky ass season.

The coach should have been the first priority, not a fucking player. He goes out and takes care of these foreign players before he takes care of the coaching position, or the coach he got in the CL?

Or, and this is where roman is busted: Did he try to take care of the coaching position first, but the coach he wanted( and still wants) told him no( pep)? ....Because if the coaching position was first priority, and RDM was his choice, shouldn't he have the job already!

RDM hasn't heard from chelsea at all.

you guys just do not understand what the hell is going down.

It's disgusting.

How the hell are you going to build a team without a coach, or is a team being built for a particular coach in mind?

foh!

Ronaldinho leaves Flamengo
Updated: May 31, 2012, 4:53 PM ET
Associated Press

SAO PAULO -- Ronaldinho's stint with Brazil's most popular club is over after the player decided to sue Flamengo for reportedly $20 million for unpaid salaries and delayed payments.

Ronaldinho's lawyer Gislaine Nunes said on Thursday a judge ruled in favor of the player's request to have his contract terminated. They want the club to pay everything they claim it owes to the 2004 and 2005 FIFA player of the year in wages and other rights.

"We didn't expect an attitude like this," club president Patricia Amorim said. "Now the case is in the hands of our legal department, which will take the necessary legal measures to defend the interests of Flamengo. The club is greater than any person and it's going to be like this forever."

The club said in a statement that the player made the decision to leave after "missing practice for four days." It said Ronaldinho was suing for an "alleged debt."

But here's something even better. Let's say Landon leaves for Everton (which, they'd be fools not to do), who would the Galaxy go after.

Now, I'm not saying that the Galaxy should go after Ronaldinho, but I'm just saying the prospect is out there. Especially since they did play together in Milan for a bit.

You're such pests...now, what is it you want? In your depths of your ignorance, what is it you want? Well, whatever it is you want, I can't deliver because I just don't see it. - Orson Welles

assuming both parties are still interested, I would put LA at the top of the list. Read somewhere yesterday that Keane may not be coming back to LA after the Euros so maybe 'Dinho takes his DP spot? As a 2-time World POTY, his name would definitely ring bells in Qatar/China/Russia too, so maybe he goes that Raul/Drogba/Eto'o route if the money's right?

In other MLS news, just read that Del Piero is in talks with Montreal

94. "Galacticos West: Hulk to Chelsea for 38."
In response to Reply # 0

For all stah, this is one of the seven signs of the apocalypse. Other Chelsea supporters will likely feel differently.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2012/may/31/chelsea-agree-deal-hulk-porto

Chelsea have agreed a fee of £38m for the Porto striker Hulk and the deal is ready to be closed. The figure has been brokered by facilitators working on behalf on each club and, with the Brazil international's personal terms not expected to be an obstacle, it merely remains for the directors on both sides to sign the relevant paperwork.

The Chelsea owner, Roman Abramovich, as ever, will reserve the right to renegotiate until the last minute yet there is a confidence, not least on Hulk's part, that there will be no glitches, after what has been a lengthy process, and that he will get the move that he has craved, subject to a medical.

Porto have been happy to push the line about Hulk's release clause being €100m and although the Guardian has now learned that the figure is €60m , the Portuguese club have been forced to accept less, not least because only Chelsea have been willing to make a competitive offer. The release clause was never going to be binding. Porto had wanted no less than £40m but Chelsea have haggled them down.

The fee, however, represents an eye-watering outlay and, on the back of the £32m deal that Chelsea have put into place for the Lille attacking midfielder Eden Hazard, it is a serious statement of intent from Abramovich, who still does not have a permanent manager.

Roberto Di Matteo, the Champions League-winning interim coach, remains in the dark about his future, with his Stamford Bridge contract set to expire at the end of June. Abramovich has a frosty relationship with Di Matteo and it is clear that he is exploring other options, with the former Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola his ideal candidate. Guardiola says that he needs a break from the game.

Abramovich, with the help of his influential technical director, Michael Emenalo, is calling the shots and the Russian drove the capture of Hazard, a player who stands to inject greater fantasy into Chelsea's game. Hulk is also considered a player to excite the crowd, a powerful and clinical presence, who can play as the centre-forward or off the right, where he is likely to feature for Chelsea.

Ron Gourlay, the club's chief executive, made it clear last Wednesday that Fernando Torres would start next season as the team's No9. Abramovich made it a personal mission to sign the Spain striker in January of last year from Liverpool for £50m and despite Torres's poor goals return – he has 12 in 67 appearances for the club – the owner is determined to see him prosper. "Fernando Torres is the man that we will go forward with and Fernando Torres will score us the goals," Gourlay said.

Torres's principal competition last season came from Didier Drogba but the 34-year-old has left the club as a free agent and he is ready to sign a contract at Shanghai Shenhua that is worth €300,000 a week after tax, which would make him one of the highest paid players in world football. The current leader is the Cameroon striker Samuel Eto'o, who takes home €423,000 a week after tax at Anzhi Makhachkala.

John Terry, the Chelsea captain, has been banned by Uefa for three European club matches over his red card against Barcelona in the Champions League semi-final. Terry had to sit out Chelsea's win in the final against Bayern Munich and will miss the Super Cup match against Europa League winners Atlético Madrid in August, plus Chelsea's first Champions League group-stage match in September.

Chelsea's moves for Hulk and Hazard are a big part of the plan to rejuvenate a squad that lagged 25 points off the Premier League title pace. Along with Drogba, José Bosingwa and Salomon Kalou have been released while the club are open to offers for Florent Malouda and Michael Essien, both of whom have one year to run on their contracts. Chelsea have also added the young wingers Marko Marin from Werder Bremen and Kevin de Bruyne from Genk, each for £7m fees.

Hulk, 25, has been in Chelsea's sights all season. His record is outstanding – 57 goals in 91 games in the past two seasons – and there is the belief that he can improve at Stamford Bridge. Neither Hulk nor Hazard have allowed the uncertainty over the managerial position at Chelsea to deflect them. Together with the Spaniard Juan Mata, they stand to form a potent trio behind Torres.

have gone completely silent. Shit even the Man United fans I know don't have actual words to say to me. I can't even locate an old Liverpool supporter these days. Its awesome. In a word awesome. I thought I understood what vengeance felt like but I really didn't, not in a sports sense. So many wrongs, righted in such a short period of time.

http://espn.go.com/sports/soccer/story/_/id/7994971/chelsea-close-deal-forward-hulk-according-reports

"Chelsea will acquire Brazilian international striker Hulk from Porto for a 38-million-pound transfer fee, or more than $58.5 million, according to reports in British newspapers The Guardian and The Mirror.

According to reports, both sides have agreed to the transfer, with only the club directors' signatures still required to complete the deal, which is still subject to a medical exam.

Hulk, 25, has 57 goals in 91 games over the past two seasons and has played with the Brazilian national team during exhibitions this week. He scored twice against Denmark on Saturday.

On Monday, 21-year-old Belgian attacking midfielder Eden Hazard revealed he would leave French side Lille to join Chelsea, though neither club officially has confirmed the transfer, reported to be worth 32 million pounds, or more than $49 million.

After winning the Champions League last season, Chelsea lost striker Didier Drogba and will release forward Salomon Kalou and defender Jose Bosingwa at the end of June................."

That's 60 million DOLLARS for Hulk....and about 55 million for Hazard...so about 120 million .....so I was correct on what the grand total was going to be.

I told you it wasn't an exaggeration.

and this:

Ranking Club Debt
1. Manchester United £716m
2. Chelsea (Limited) £701m
3. Valencia C.F £501m
4. Liverpool £351m
5. Real Madrid £296m
6. FC Barcelona £273m
7. AS Roma £271m
8. Schalke 04 £234m
9. Arsenal £203m
10. Fulham £198m

Like I said, chelsea has it good because they are borrowing from Roman. However, a lot of people think roman wrote that debt off. He didn't not turn all of it into shares. there is still 700 million dollars worth of debt over Chelsea limited's head. Roman just chooses not to call it. ...so again, chelsea has it good because roman is the owner.

Also, you really need to research a lot of chelsea boards. There are tons of chelsea fans who do not like the moves, and are totally against them, and I am one of them, and I am entitled to my opinion.

In response to Reply # 97

nobody except for you converts to dollars. that's probably where the confusion is--there's no need to convert to dollars.

also, it's a bit unfair to compare pre-oil money transfer fees to post-oil money transfer fees. Not specific to Roman, but in general--over the past 10 years or so, fees have skyrocketed. Dani Alves, for example, was a record breaking 32.5 mil euro when he moved to barca. now that's what's being given out to star-ready but not yet star proven strikers. there's just a shit-ton more money flowing. compared to the current market valuations, the prices for hazard and hulk aren't that bad. and one likely will flame out--transfers always do. but that's part of the pricing as well.

anyway, congrats on the cl win. i saw the last 10 minutes of regulation and overtime. can't believe rdm won't get the coaching role after pulling that rabbit out of a hat. and i didn't post that earlier because i was in new orleans for a wedding and than vacation. i haven't been around here until this week and until today, only nba posts to talk rondo. hopefully, much like with real finally winning a real title this year, you can start hating barcelona on a less personal level. then it'd be win/win

ETHER!

"
Frank Lampard cost 11 mil pounds
Drogba cost 24 million pounds
Ivanovic cost 9.7 million pounds
Petr Cech cost 7 million pounds
Ashley Cole 5 million pounds and change (william gallas)
Ramires 22 million euros

On the other hand
Torres 40 million pounds
Shivchenko 75.2 million euros and Crespo
Zhirkov 18 million pounds

I know you could give me flip examples proving the contrary. I already acknowledge that!

However, there are cases of both things happening, cheaper players doing well and marquee signings sucking a lot. Our problem isn't that we are flashy like that, our problem is that our owner thinks he is our manager and he hires and fires whoever the heck he wants...and buys whatever he wants

Our signings fail because he does not consult the technical staff or the manager. To add insult to injury, we have a dumbass called Ron Gourlay (whom I hate with a passion) who fired RAY WILKINS.

Our whole methodology is flawed firstly because our buys are done one abramovic's whim and secondly because there is no conclusive proof that buying torres at 50 million was better than playing ... lets say ... borini up front and buying torres later on at 30 million or maybe not buying him at all and developing lukaku ...

Good managers work with players and make specific strategies. You can't just keep buying established players. A healthy mix would be awesome, specially if there is so much talent in your youth. Had our youth team sucked I wouldn't be a proponent of their inclusion but that is NOT the case. We have won the youth FA twice in three years (our total EVER is 3 youth cups) and we still waste our talent.

We cannot expect loans spells to gift us ready made players. Sometimes clubs have to toil with their youth. We can't just expect glory when the kids touch the ball the first time. That is not reasonable behavior. If we still support Torres then there is no reason for us to not extend the same decency to our OWN talent."

can you read?

do you understand his statement?

when roman buys low, the transfers are successful, when he buys high they are not....

the point is roman heads the scouting, and he makes over the top pturchases with no type of direction

...Chelsea are not a small club. Chelsea are enormously wealthy. Chelsea have the 6th highest revenue in the world. Chelsea is the 7th highest-valued club in the world. Chelsea are everything you like to pretend they're not. Thus all this talk about youth and building is nonsense.

Here's the starting XI from the CL final, and whether they came through Chelsea's youth system or they were bought as a senior player:

Petr Cech - BOUGHT
José Bosingwa - BOUGHT
Ryan Bertrand - Youth, barely
David Luiz - BOUGHT
Ashley Cole - BOUGHT
Gary Cahill - BOUGHT
Frank Lampard - BOUGHT
John Obi Mikel - BOUGHT
Salomon Kalou - BOUGHT
Juan Mata - BOUGHT
Didier Drogba - BOUGHT

Now, how do you want to spin this?

what a wonderful list of nothing but purchases, and no youth.

thank you, lad, for proving the my point, and the point of the statement

we need to start focusing on our youth.

I couldn't have done it better.

Oh, yeah, your list, are of player's (most of them)who were wisely purchased, financially.

Also this isn't about buying per se. It's about making healthy purchases, and not throwing money down the garbage chute. Roman zeros in on a player, and he never takes the time or effort to investigate talent elsewhere.

that is the problem.

It's a static routine

>we need to start focusing on our youth.

Except that team I listed just won the UEFA Champion's League. Seems like Roman's purchasing plan worked out pretty well, didn't it?

Or are you saying they shouldn't have won?

Either way, type this after me: "Chelsea are not a small club. Chelsea are buyers."

wtf?

do argue just to argue???

No his plan didn't work out, because it wasn't his plan. It was RDM's plan. Roman wanted AVB and Torres to lead Chelsea to glory. That didnt happen!

AVB was fired, and Torres sucked.

RDM took over by default, and changed the strategy and plan .... and that is what lead Chelsea to glory!...

The old players were forgotten about and written off by the entire organization, but RDM
ressurected them, and marched them to glory....

Most of Chelsea's success were plans that were totally opposite of what roman wanted...

Roman's decision making sucked, and he often renders Chelsea to the failure.....

we've been through 9 coaches in less than 8 years, and his expensive buys have been atrocious.

look man, no diss to you, but you have no clue to what is going on.

I think all stah needs to realize that this is just who Chelsea is, or at the very least, who they have become. If you want a team that is going to develop talent, it's not going to happen. Players go to Chelsea and don't really improve. The only player that has grown since coming to Chelsea has been Ivanovic. Everyone else either stays the same or regresses.

Which is a shame, because Romelu, Lukaku, and Sturridge are extremely talented, and should be getting more minutes, but that team is built around established players. It's obviously not a bad thing, Real Madrid is the exact same way. Actally, most of the larger teams are the same way. But they aren't going to ever buy prudently, at least while they have Mr. Moneybags there.

But there are teams that buy and develop. Barca do an excellent job of this, but they make fewer moves most of the time.

You're such pests...now, what is it you want? In your depths of your ignorance, what is it you want? Well, whatever it is you want, I can't deliver because I just don't see it. - Orson Welles

138. "Mikel Arteta to speak with Arsenal over improved contract"
In response to Reply # 0

This is possibly the last thing we needed to do on our extensive "to do" list. Arsenal show such a lack of ambition in the off-season. I know Wenger worked (more) miracles last season selling Cesc, Nasri and having Wilshere out all season and improving the league position from 4th to 3rd but we were there by default with Spurs failing at the end of the season and Chelsea having their worst league form in almost a decade. Liverpool are going to come back strong.

Arsenal need to be aggressive, show they have ambition to win the league and make progress in the CL and you do that buy competing with other teams for top quality players. I know Arsenal has a wage limit which means it can't sign the superstars but giving Arteta an improved contract is not what the club needs to be doing.

Is our debt so huge? Why hasn't Stan Kroenke invested any money in the club since he took over?

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/football/18324116
Arsenal chief executive Ivan Gazidis will meet Mikel Arteta's representatives this week to discuss an improved contract for the midfielder.
Arteta, 30, is understood to have taken a pay cut of £10,000 a week to sign from Everton for £10m last summer.
The midfielder signed a four-year deal worth a reported £60,000 a week and has asked the club to review that following an impressive first season.

good move if this happens, Lille is a well-managed club that has brought up plenty of fantastic players recently. He's still young and thankfully the "next Zizou" BS has died down, so he should be in ideal conditions to keep progressing there.

In response to Reply # 0

I've seen this rumor a half dozen times over the last month and am wondering if this is true/possible.

I know the Qatari family is interested in buy clubs in both England and Italy ahead of the 2022 WC and they apparently are interested in Newcastle and Fulham. I hear that they would purchase 49% leaving Mo Al Fayed in charge and increase our transfer budget to 40 million euros. Maybe we could keep Dembele and Duece after all. Fulham seems to fit their blueprint, no? Modest clubs only a handful of good players away from the CL. Good location as well.

Here's a couple of sources:

Euro 2012: Robert Lewandowski is 'going to Manchester United'
• Poland manager lets slip striker's possible summer destination
• Jakub Blaszczykowski also moving 'somewhere in England'

The striker Robert Lewandowski is "going to Manchester United" and the midfielder Jakub Blaszczykowski "somewhere in England", according to the Poland manager Franciszek Smuda.

"In my opinion, in a moment they will be gone from Borussia Dortmund," Smuda said. "Lewy is going to Manchester United, Jakub also somewhere in England, Lukasz Piszczek to Real Madrid. They have a goal and they want to grow."

Smuda revealed the possible summer destinations of the Dortmund trio when discussing a totally different topic. The manager said he would rather turn a blind eye to his players enjoying "bunga bunga" than allow them to drink alcohol.

Smuda, whose side had the honour of opening Euro 2012 against Greece in Warsaw, has a strict no-alcohol policy and in April dropped Slawomir Peszko after the midfielder ended up in police custody following a night of drinking.

"It's better to have bunga bunga than to abuse alcohol," Smuda was quoted as saying by Polish daily Dziennik Gazeta Prawna. "Alcohol just blows my fuse."

"Bunga bunga" refers to the name that the former Italian prime minister Silvio Berlusconi bestowed on the wild parties he allegedly held at his villas.

The Fiorentina goalkeeper Artur Boruc and the Legia Warsaw defender Michal Zewlakow have also fallen foul of Smuda's anti-alcohol crusade.

"If I gave players the impression that I'm a pushover, jelly or pudding, we would be done for. You can't show that," Smuda said.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2012/jun/26/arsenal-complete-oliver-giroud-signing

Arsenal have confirmed the signing of the France international striker Olivier Giroud from Montpellier on a long-term contract.

The 25-year-old netted 21 goals in 36 league appearances as Montpellier won their first Ligue 1 title last season, and will now aim to make an impact as the Gunners look to deliver a first trophy since 2005 and progress again in Europe.

Giroud, whose deal with Arsenal will officially commence on July 1, passed a medical on Monday evening and said on the club's official website: "I have always admired Arsenal with its great history and reputation, and I now hope to achieve great things here. I am very proud to be a Gunner and I will give my best for all the Arsenal fans.

"It is a huge satisfaction to join this great club and it has been a dream since I was young to play in the Premier League. I was attracted by the philosophy of football and Arsene Wenger's 'touch' at this club. I am delighted to be here at Arsenal and to be part of one of the great teams in English football."

Wenger added: "We are delighted to have secured the signing of Olivier Giroud. He has a very good physical presence and is exceptional in the air, with a great work ethic. We are excited about Olivier joining us and he will add an additional dimension to our attacking options next season.

"He has proved that he is capable of performing at the top level with club and country, and we saw what a big influence he was in Montpellier's championship-winning side last season. We all look forward to Olivier joining us and seeing him play in an Arsenal shirt."

Arsenal could also now resurrect interest in Yann M'Vila after Champions League finalists Bayern Munich cooled their interest in the Rennes midfielder.

The Gunners look set to to offload some of their fringe players, such as Morocco international Marouane Chamakh, Mexico forward Carlos Vela, Brazilian midfielder Denilson and Denmark striker Nicklas Bendtner - who spent last season on loan at Sunderland and is now attracting "global interest", according to his representative.

Fulham, meanwhile, are reported to be ready to step up their interest in a £5million move for Gunners midfielder Aaron Ramsey following the departure of their captain Danny Murphy to Blackburn.

I've seen nothing but inconsistency from dude. Hopefully with Bayern cooling on M'Vila, Rennes will finally come down on that £17 million asking fee. I guess I was in the minority when it comes to his Euro cup performance but I'm ok with that if it brings his transfer down because he's pure composure and quality from everything I've seen.

this is complete bullshit

Chelsea should have scooped him up. He's African/French. He's a striker...He would have fit in perfectly.

Newcastle clearly told the world that they were not keeping him, because they refused to give him a contract extension. Chelsea should have went in at that point.

I also feel bad for him. He was the stimuli behind newcastle going after Cissie, his close friend and national teammate....They were supposed to be a dynamite tandem, but Newcastle moved demba ba back in the formation , and dude went scoreless for the remainder of the season.

Newcastle disrespected dude. It was demba ba who put them back on the map.

damn I wont be able to say the 2 dembas anymore.

Or getting rid of Nolan, Carroll, Barton and all the other uncultured footballers that brought them down in the first place. Nope. Not at all. Was all Ba.

You know what I meant. Demba ba was blazing the shit out of the league in the first half of the season, and you know it.

Ba was murdering the defense, and then he gets shitted on in the second half of the season by his on team??

come on!

It's like when Cissie came over, the org told him to fuck off. ....

They got dude for peanuts from west ham, and he played like a striker worth 30 mil pounds ...they couldn't give him a contract extension?

I hate that kind of business.

AC refuses to give him a raise, PSG is offering 2x what he's earning, so the negotiations started again

other than that, Inter would be looking at Debuchy to replace Maicon (who's coveted by Real)

In response to Reply # 0

Nice bargain; I have a feeling this seals the departures of Ireland and Delph, especially with Jean II Makoun also set to return from his loan to Olympiakos last year. Would give us a hell of a central midfield to choose from with Gardner, Makoun, Bannan, El Ahmadi, Herd and, depending on how Lambert views him, Holman.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2012/jun/26/aston-villa-karim-el-ahmadi

Paul Lambert hopes Aston Villa can seal deal for Karim El Ahmadi
• Feyenoord midfielder would cost around €2.5m
• Dutch-born star has played 10 times for Morocco

The Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert is optimistic of reaching a "positive conclusion" to his bid to sign the Feyenoord midfielder Karim El Ahmadi.

Lambert said Villa are in talks with the 27-year-old player and the Midlands club are believed to be close to agreeing a fee for the player in the region of £2.5m-£3m.

Lambert said: "We're in talks at this moment, those talks are ongoing and we hope to reach a positive conclusion with Feyenoord and the player.

"Karim is a player who I feel could definitely improve our squad. He has experience of big club football and also at international level.

"He can pass the ball well and he could be an important player for us in central midfield. Let's see how things progress. We're very hopeful."

Ahmadi spent four seasons with FC Twente before signing for Feyenoord in 2008 for €5m. He was born in Enschede, but is of Moroccan descent and has played 10 times for Morocco.

Ahmadi is known for his strong defensive qualities and would become Lambert's first major signing since replacing Alex McLeish as Villa manager last month.

he's been incredibly assured in Villa's midfield so far. True, it's against League 2 and MLS opposition, but still- always has a pass in mind, keeps the ball moving, and puts his teammates in position to advance the ball. He's going to be a fun player to watch this season.

I can tell you that there are huge problems on the horizon for team harmony if he picks any of them to drop in favor of Modric. But such is the video-game philosophy of team management at Real Madrid that this snake may have already began to eat itself a bit ahead of schedule.

It still leaves too many starter-quality midfielders with WC aspirations and not enough spaces, and they have yet to even resolve Kaka's situation.

Current projected starting lineup for RM:

Benzema

Ronaldo
Ozil Di Maria
Khaderia Alonso

ShitforbrainsMarcelo Ramos Pepe Coentrao

So, again, who do you drop for Modric and how does he fit in that system? Neither Ozil or Modric are wingers, so Di Maria's slot is safe, and given the amount of times Marcelo and Coentrao go up field, Mou would never drop two holding mids. The logical swap is Ozil, but Mou calls hims the future of the club (though they got him for cheap and could sell him for huge money now). I don't think Modric, in the current Madrid setup, is anything more than collecting another name for the sake of it. aka, what leads to Madrid blowups traditionally.

not a bad price for a definite improvement at the weakest position on the squad. still rooting for abidal to return, but that's pretty much a 1% chance of happening.

relatedly, Rosell's said barca has 40 million per year to spend, so assuming a couple of the younger guys who are blocked and/or guys like Adriano and Keita who are now definitely bench players go elsewhere, there's anywhere between 25-35 million euro left. not definite that they'll use it all (in a year, they expect to spend >50 on Neymar, so some year they have to spend less than 40 to stay around the total budget across the 4 years Rosell claimed that budget is for), but expectations are they move on Javi Martinez with the majority of the rest of that budget.

glad they're focusing on the backline. midfield's got talent to waste as is, front line should be improved by alexis getting more integrated + the return of villa + a couple of the younger guys.

not sure why botia hasn't been brought back/that's not getting talked about at all.

edit: it's 7 mil this year, 7 mil next...so some commentators think rosell has 33 mil to play with. then again, some of those idiots also think hummels is still an option. or thiago silva...so...yeah...anyway, CB next please!

http://espn.go.com/sports/soccer/seriea/story/_/id/8122644/serie-ac-milan-re-signs-thiago-silva-5-years

MILAN -- AC Milan defender Thiago Silva has signed a five-year contract with the Serie A club that runs through June 2017.

Thiago Silva appeared to be on the verge of a big-money transfer to Paris Saint-Germain last month. However, Milan confirmed the Brazil international signed a new deal on Monday.

The 27-year-old's previous contract was set to run out in 2016. He has been at Milan since 2009 and helped the team win the Serie A title in 2011.

Manchester United seeks $100m New York stock sale
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-18699885

Manchester United has applied to list on the US stock market in a share sale that aimed at raising $100m (£64m).

In documents filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, the Premier League giant said it is listing on the New York Stock Exchange.

The club had earlier explored the possibility of a $1bn floatation on the Singapore stock market.

United, among the best-supported clubs in the world, said it would use money from the listing to repay debt.

The club has been controlled since 2005 by the Glazer family, the billionaire US sports investors who also own the Tampa Bay Buccaneers American football franchise.

But the club has in recent years been weighed down with heavy debts despite its huge global fanbase and promotional and marketing efforts.

"We intend to use all of our net proceeds from this offering to reduce our indebtedness," the prospectus filed with the SEC said.

In September United received approval for a share sale in Singapore, but the process was delayed because of volatility in the stock markets.

Several high-profile flotations have been pulled in recent months as investor appetite has been dampened by the European debt crisis and worries that Asian economies are slowing.

There've been rumblings about him leaving since last summer and now it's official. Saw him score in the Camp Nou a few years back and have always been a fan of his.

Rumor has it he's off to China (to be announced tomorrow?) and Barca is looking at Javi Martinez (if they can get Bilbao to relax the 40m pricetag) to fill in at DM/CB a la the Maschete.

In response to Reply # 0

Hopefully he settles into a starting role sooner rather than later...

Chievo and AS Roma have finally settled on a transfer fee for Michael Bradley, with a package of 3.6 million euros, half-ownership of Adrian Stoian and a season loan for Leandro Greco in exchange for the US midfielder.

A source close to the situation told MLSsoccer.com that the deal is down to paperwork, with Roma manager Zdenek Zeman hoping to have Bradley at their preseason camp in the northern Italian hamlet of Riscone on Monday. The 24-year-old New Jersey native passed his medical and inked a four-year contract on Thursday.

The transfer caps a 14-month Giallorossi crush, with technical director Walter Sabatini recently telling local reporters that the club would have chased Bradley last summer if the necessary non-European Union roster slot had been available.

This is an excellent signing regardless, Bradley's better, younger and I think cheaper than Gago, and dumping Greco is an added bonus as well. I assume this means we'll be rolling with a midfield of Pjanic/Bradley/DDR, which is VERY good right today with a halfway decent chance of becoming great.

19 year old central midfielder that Italians apparently dubbed 'the new Pirlo'...I like the young talent side of it but our midfield is starting to look mighty crowded (plus this signing doesn't jibe w/the 'we're looking for ECL experience' angle Leo and Ancelotti have been feeding the media). KingKahn, as the resident calcio expert, any input?

still looking for a central defender + a bonafide striker. When it comes to the latter, l'equipe was talking about Higuain still + Eto'o, Edson Cavani, Van Persie & somebody else I forgot, but they're clearly throwing shit at the wall to see what sticks. Of all those though, I would like Cavani best, I think. Or Higuain.

Pescara was Serie B last year, didn't see 'em once. However, I believe they scored a record number of goals in that league en route to promotion (somewhere around 90-something), and their rousing success has actually landed Zdenek Zeman back at the Olimpico. Which brings me to my next point: it *was* a Zdenek Zeman team, who as you probably know is the futbol equivalent of 'Antoni, so maybe you could argue Verratti's is merely a product of that wonderful offensive system of his (but again, I ain't seen shit so I can't really say).

But if there's anything you can say about ZZ, he has always been able and willing to identify excellent young talent and play it. Word to Nesta, Totti and Candela. So I'd probably feeling good just off that bit alone.

In response to Reply # 0

this is old, but i just found it poking around the guardian site.

http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2012/jun/25/sunderland-david-miliband-africa

David Miliband has helped Sunderland to secure a pioneering African sponsorship deal. The club's partnership with Invest in Africa is, according to the club, the most lucrative such commercial transaction in Sunderland's history and will see the team wear the logo of the not-for-profit organisation on their shirts for the next two years.

Miliband, Sunderland's vice-chairman and the former foreign secretary, is confident the agreement will help secure the club's financial future while also opening up a huge new international market.

"This is a landmark announcement for Sunderland FC and a landmark for the Premier League," he said. "The image of Africa is often one of poverty and conflict, but there is another reality. The African Investment Bank estimates there are 300 million middle-class people in Africa. This is the biggest international venture in the club's history."

Tullow Oil, Africa's largest independent oil company, is the founding partner in an initiative which seeks to promote fresh investment in the continent. "It's the best commercial deal in Sunderland's history," said Miliband. "But we are not putting a figure on it because there are more companies that are going to join and as more companies join, the benefits will grow.

"In the modern world, investment in Africa is an opportunity for investment to bounce back into Sunderland and into the wider North-east. This is a big opportunity for wealth and jobs in our region as well as in the continent of Africa."

Invest in Africa aims to challenge the perception of the continent as crisis-torn and poverty-stricken and persuade British companies to begin operations there.

"There's a huge, growing population – the biggest young population on the planet is in Africa, and they are football-mad," said Aidan Heavey, chief executive of Tullow Oil. "Sunderland will become the Premier League club in Africa. Everybody will be wearing the Sunderland shirt, every kid in every school will want a Sunderland shirt which says 'Invest in Africa', believe me. It will be the number one club, so what you are looking at is a huge market and huge exposure, and Sunderland will have that exposure.

"At a stroke, this association will make Sunderland the most popular club in Africa. At the moment, the usual clubs are the biggest, people like Manchester United, Chelsea and Liverpool. But supporters right across Africa will now see the Invest In Africa logo on the front of Sunderland shirts and take pride in that. From now on, Sunderland will be their team."

Martin O'Neill, Sunderland's manager, endorsed the message. "Our ambition is to compete with the very best and the biggest clubs," he said. "This association with Invest in Africa, I think, will help us to go on to the international stage. Naturally, we want it to promote and enhance growth and development on the African continent. We will get benefit out of that as well and it will help us to be a really top club."

Ellis Short, Sunderland's owner and chairman, has long known that his club needed to look well beyond the UK in order to achieve expansion. "We are excited to be partnering this pioneering initiative," he said. "It is a first not just for the North-east, but for football and the Premier League as well.

"It will enable us to deliver benefits to the local business community as well as our partners in Africa. The partnership will enable Sunderland to grow its football base and brand in Africa, where 300m people regularly watch Premier League football."

There's a glutton of midfielders at L'Pool. And I don't see him moving into the forwards there.

He'd move just to sit on the bench. And it's not like they are going to be playing in any of the European tournaments anytime soon. Fulham had the same record last year.

I'm not riding hard for either, but I think there will be a lot of pressure to play Carroll (who I think is a bum) just due to the large transfer fee. If Rodgers continues with his 4-3-3 formation, I can't think there's a spot for him at maybe one of the winger slots, as I don't see Suarez moving on the wing, and definitely don't see Carroll there.

As for the midfield, they have to find space for Gerrard, Adam, Henderson, Joe Cole, Aqulani, and Lucas somewhere. Granted, with Babel and Kuyt gone, there's forward spots to be had. Do you think he's start over the rest of the midfield most of the time? Granted, I think he'd be definitely one of the top 3 midfield players there, but I think he'd be on the bench more often than not.

I think the opposite. In fact I think Rogers will have to find ways to get Dempsey rest. Is Cole gonna be worth a damn? Maybe, I guess. Lucas is defensive, Adam is stationary, Gerrard is Gerrard, Henderson is adequate...I don't know. Maybe it's my pro-US bias, but if I'm Rogers, I slot Clint somewhere forward and slightly left and figure out where everybody else goes after that. I could see:

Carroll (cause yeah, you gotta play that paycheck)
Dempsey - Suarez
Adam - Gerrard
Lucas

But we'll see. This deal ain't even gone through yet, has it?

It hasn't and might not even happen. I think he'd be a good fit at the Emirates if they sell RVP. They already have Giroud and Poldoski to play up top, Walcott, Alex-Ox, and Gervinho on the wings, and he'd be ideal to play in the hole as an attacking midfielder. I'd like to see something like this.

Podolski
Gervinho-Dempsey-Walcott
Wilshere-Arteta
Song

The only problem is they still have to do something with Arshavin. I like Rosicky, Ramsey, Giroud, and the OX coming off the bench.

And to make things worse, there's this story that Rodgers is trying to keep Maxi Rodriguez, which I think is a good idea, but there's no place for all these players. If Maxi is still around, I think he fits into a wing role very well. I don't know about starting, but he's quality. I still don't understand why they transferred in Henderson and Adam last year anyway.

bc Kenny fucked up.

I think what was posted above is correct:

Carroll
Suarez - Dempsey
Adam - Gerrard
Lucas
Enrique - Agger - Skrtel - Johnson
Reina

Then when Adam establishes that he sucks, Henderson will get more playing time.

Downing will get some starts but as long as he put ups 0 G and 0 A, who the F cares.

Realistically you'd play Downing the frequent weeks that Carroll doesn't start, or play him for Dempsey sometimes.

see, Thiago's extension came as a surprise to most observers as it was at odds w/the rather dire economic situation AC is facing. Well, apparently there's a heated power struggle brewing at Milan between 'dat 'sconi and the financiers who are tired of sinking money into the club and want to impose 'dat 'sterity policy.

ffwd to yesterday, Galliani said everything was possible during a mercato, when asked if Zlatan & Thiago Silva could still go. Now...Leo and the Qataris are staying mute about this, but they've been working on this double whammy since January apparently. If they pull this off this summer...man.

goes without saying, this is 'dat good vacationing at the folks' in Paris reading l'equipe every morning w/coffee & croissant special I'm delivering y'all. You're welcome.
