Being a RedSox fan has a lot of times where you have to take Ls for "other fans", this is probably one of those times.

Big Papi has been the cornerstone of the offense this season, no reason to boo him.

and there's certainly some serious racial shit behind it, but Ortiz was sucking and his manager was defending him and he had been flirting with leaving.

youk's been playing through injuries for half a decade (many of those injuries his fault for playing so recklessly) and this new manager that no one wanted and who had already said some dumbass shit went after him within a week or two of the season starting. bobby v. basically went heel--i wouldn't be surprised if it were to protect youk from the fans. better to get it from a manager and get love from the fans than vice versa.

or, at least, I hope. because otherwise, bobby v. just questioned the effort of a guy who was supposed to never make the majors and instead became an all star.

>Y'all ain't do that for Ortiz, ha

which, having written what i just wrote, is also true of ortiz. he did look done. lol. Lski. but still, this is reaching into the long ago past just cuz you're bored/want to ask someone for why are they mad.

why for?

If you suck you get boo'd.

When you start playing better we love you again. It's how things work here.

Same thing happened to Beckett, Lester, Lackey last year. If they start pitching well, they will be cheered again.

How are you supposed to cheer for a guy when he is literally the worst player on the field?

they should never have to pay for anything else in Boston. these fucks cried and whined for years. then they got two World Series in a 4 year span.

Status should be Teflon NO MATTER WHAT.

But it is what it is.

Should the fans cheer him when he is batting a buck fifty?

Nobody hated him, but plenty of people, including me, thought he was done and it was time to pack it in.

I'll be the first to gladly admit I was wrong.

Didn't your team give up on the man first?

Like just hoping he pulls out of it instead of acting like he owes fans anything more than an honest effort.

>Didn't your team give up on the man first?

Yeah. It was super dumb, but the franchise survived to both win some games and do more stupid stuff. I'm not entirely sure how that matters, since my issue here isn't with baseball front offices making poor decisions.

I probably would not have boo'd him myself if I was at a game in that stretch, but I did think that he was done.

And the other note had nothing to do with anything, just wanted to rub it in a little more.

It's rude. I'm sure not everybody who does it is a jerk, but it's a fine way to announce to the world "I'm really unpleasant!"

Besides, if people thought Ortiz was done then they should be annoyed with the on-field staff and front office. They're the one paying a cooked DH and writing his name in the lineup.

Because Fenway's a shithole that they've dressed up nicely. I'll admit that it's a great place to experience a game, but it's a shitty place to actually SEE a game. There are probably like 5000 seats with decent sightlines in the whole damn place, the Pink hat takeover has been pretty insufferable, and if you're an overweight bastard, (which, by the standards from when Fenway was built, is probably 90% of the fucking crowd...and yes, they should be more accomodating of my desire to eat and drink whatever the fuck I want, whenever the fuck I want, however much the fuck I want), it's fucking uncomfortable. And the Sweet Caroline thing makes me wish death on Neal Diamond, which makes me a little sad. I know the atmosphere I loved as a kid is probably gone forever, but christ, can we get a decent yard?

But maybe it's just me, and I'm just living up to my screen name.

Red Sox Rally Past Orioles
Tommy Hunter's balk leads to Will Middlebrooks scoring the tying run in Red Sox' 8-6 win over Orioles.Tags: Tommy Hunter, Will Middlebrooksm Dustin Pedroia

Fondly referred to as Big Papi, David Ortiz became a beloved figure in Boston for his prodigious power during the Boston Red Sox's two World Series runs. However, in the past couple of years, Ortiz and Boston have been a lightning rod for criticism due to some slow starts.

That criticism has taken a toll on Ortiz, as the team has often been cited as a squad without a true clubhouse leader. Following Boston's Monday night win, which got the team to .500 for the first time this month, Ortiz took umbrage with that assertion.

Edes: Ortiz's Late Blast

David Ortiz ripped those who say he's not a leader in the Red Sox clubhouse -- including his own front office, Gordon Edes writes. Story

• Rapid Reaction | ESPN Boston

"I'm the kind of who worries about winning games," Ortiz told ESPNBoston.com's Gordon Edes after Monday's 8-6 win in Baltimore. "I'm a winner. I hate losing. But what I do, I don't do for everybody to know. I do it for us to get better and the trash talking out there to stop."

Ortiz was set off by a question about a team meeting he called May 11 in the wake of a golf outing pitcher Josh Beckett took while nursing an injured shoulder.

"Who told you about that meeting?" Ortiz asked reporters Monday night.

"Somebody wrote, 'Why didn't he do it earlier?' Earlier? When am I going to do it, in spring training? What did I do wrong? Seriously, what did I do wrong?

"You hit 54 home runs, then hit 35, it's not good enough. How many people hit 35? Never good enough, bro. That's why I don't care."

With the retirements of Tim Wakefield and Jason Varitek, the Red Sox have been viewed as devoid of any leadership presence. Ortiz hasn't attempted to be a public leader but claims everything he does is for his team.

"Well, let me tell you, I was reading an article talked about the leaders people call 'leaders' in this town," he said following a night in which he hit his 10th homer of the season. "Basically, it seems like no matter what you do, it's not good enough.

"And you can only call leaders the guys who are out diving for balls on the field or calling pitches behind the plate?"

Ortiz also turned his ire on his own front office, claiming he's not respected by the team's executives.

"I don't get no respect," he said. "Not from the media. Not from the front office. What I do is never the right thing. It's always hiding, for somebody to find out."

Leader or not, Ortiz said he thinks his meeting has had a positive effect on the team.

"We're playing better, we're winning, everybody is going about their business. And it's still May. Not late, like want to say."

I don't know about seeing other players jerseys more than Papi. When I've been there, there has been plenty of Ortiz jerseys. I do agree that he doesn't get the respect that he deserves though. Seems like Sox fans will turn on you real quick if you ain't hitting/pitching.

though strictly looking at this year, the first since '04 that they haven't had a captain, he probably won't be around next season. it's not really a good look to name someone captain and then have him leave after a year (whether that's his decision or the sox', it's still not a good look). if you'll remember, varitek's title came along with a 4-year commitment from the sox. so the significance was them saying "this is your team now and into the future." this is a very strange year in that this team has been reeling since last september and we don't know what this team is going to look like in the future. one might argue that you need a captain even moreso in that situation, and i might agree, but i'd add that it should be someone you know is gonna be there for a few years.

also we have to remember that captains are not a common thing in baseball. there have only been 3 in sox history, and i can only remember 2 others from my lifetime (jeter and mike sweeney when he was with the royals)

edit: just researched it, konerko is the only current captain besides jeter.

double edit: got some bad info, there have been way more than 3 Red Sox captains, though there have been many gaps with no captain, including from 90-04

Doesn't matter-

Varitek did nothing to earn his stripes relative to Ortiz,
one of the most clutch players in franchise history, a lovable
guy with charisma, who does shit in the community and the
whole 9

Shit's disgusting, to be honest with you

He holds shit down, supports his coaches and teammates,
never airs out team laundry

given that it's a franchise player type of thing, the title of captain should be given to someone who is gonna be there for a few years. otherwise i'd agree with you.

I'm not sure you could describe 'Tek better than that. but you're not, you're describing ortiz. who also does this, but that doesn't mean he did it more or better than 'Tek. I'd dispute that heavily. and don't forget the impact of being the catcher vs. being a DH on whether or not teammates would follow you as their captain.

Yeah, Coco Crisp and Pokey Reese also supported their
teammates

Thing is, nobody cares because they weren't stars

Varitek was a good catcher and solid power hitter

Never in Ortiz' stratosphere

It's baseball. The only people who need teams to have a captain are fans who wear t-shirts with eagles and American flags on them.

Also, vis-a-vis the current discussion, it's worth noting that the Red Sox didn't have a "captain" for 14 years before Tek, and that the last one before him was Jim Rice.

Carl Crawford: Fan used racial slur
Updated: July 6, 2012, 10:59 AM ET
By Marc Thaler | Special to ESPNBoston.com

Fan Directs Racial Slur At Carl Crawford
After a rehab game, Carl Crawford spoke to the media to reveal, among other things, a fan directed a racial slur at him during the game.
NEXT VIDEO video

MANCHESTER, N.H. -- Before many of the 18 pitches he saw in his third rehab start for Double-A Portland on Thursday night, Boston Red Sox left fielder Carl Crawford was forced to tune out a heckler behind home plate.

The fan -- who Crawford claimed uttered "a racial slur" -- routinely made his feelings known with regard to the left fielder's $142 million contract and whether he was earning it.

Crawford He was the only one I had a problem with. People in Boston don't even do that. So I don't know what that was about. It's not that bad in Boston, like that.
” -- Rehabbing Red Sox LF Carl Crawford

The heckler's message: overrated, overpaid.

Crawford responded Thursday night in the fifth inning of Portland's 11-3 loss to the New Hampshire Fisher Cats by lacing a triple to right-center field at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium. He reached third base without drawing a throw.

After completing his night in the seventh inning, Crawford was asked about the fan and lingering animosity that may exist after his disappointing 2011 season, his first in Boston.

"Talking about that guy, he actually called me a racial slur to begin the game," said Crawford, who hit .255 with a .289 on-base percentage last season. "He was the only one I had a problem with. People in Boston don't even do that. So I don't know what that was about. It's not that bad in Boston, like that."

Crawford seemingly did hear some other ribbing. While walking back to his position after New Hampshire's Brad Glenn hit a fifth-inning home run to left field, Crawford appeared to stop, turn and wave his glove in a dissatisfied manner toward fans beyond the wall.

Crawford, however, was composed while offering his perspective to reporters in the stadium's media room. He spoke fondly of the fans in New Hampshire, many of whom cheer for the Sea Dogs despite the Fisher Cats being the Double-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays.

"I can understand why people can be upset about me signing a contract and me having the kind of year I had," Crawford said. "I understand, you know? They love their team. They want you to produce when you sign a contract like that. I can't be mad at them. All I can do is get ready to play this year and try to produce."

Crawford, who is rehabbing a sprain of the ulnar collateral ligament in his left elbow, continued to test the arm during six-plus innings of work as Portland's leadoff hitter and left fielder on Thursday night.
More On The Red Sox

Gordon Edes and the rest of the ESPNBoston.com team have the Red Sox covered for you. Blog

He went 1 for 4 with the fifth-inning triple. Hitless through two at-bats, he pulled a 2-and-1 offering and turned the corner at second base before the ball was retrieved.

"That swing felt pretty good. I ran the bases pretty good. Yeah, that felt fine," said Crawford, who has yet to play with the Red Sox this season.

Crawford tested his arm in the home half of the fifth. He didn't show any ill effects throwing to the left side of the infield after cleanly fielding a 380-foot gap double.

"It's all right," he said of his arm. "It wasn't a big deal."

Crawford could remain with Portland as he continues his rehab assignment. He said he planned to communicate with Red Sox officials on Friday.
