I have a better feeling about this series than I did about the Canucks. Not because we are playing the Blues. But because we have played well. Out right dominating a couple of games then stealing a couple of others. Quick has been on a good one. Should be a nice series. I expect this one to go 6 or 7.

Carter looked pretty good in Game 4 and at least moving better in Game 5. They need those guys to get it going. There won't be a lot of even strength scoring in this series. Whatever there is will probably come off of turnovers, need a big fore-check from the bottom lines.

I think the Kings can win the series but they are up against it a little bit. St Louis does a lot of things really consistently, that's how teams have won so far in the playoffs.

I kind of like this Blues team and they'd be a cool contrast against the Flyers (whom I am obviously rooting for), especially with Hitchcock coming back to town. He kind of sucked the fun out of the game but he got a lot out of his Flyers teams.

I don't really care who wins the West that much, I get to do the Finals no matter what. I guess it would be cool if the Kings made it but I'm not too hung up on it.

14. "Intriguing series across the board"
In response to Reply # 0

How fucking MAD was I that Ottawa could not score throwing the whole goddamn kitchen at Lundqvist in Game 7?

Anyway, I actually think the Caps have a decent chance of taking out the Rangers. They will need more great goaltending and excessively dull five-on-five play to do it but as cleanly as they executed, they can do it. They remind me a bit of Montreal and their run to the conference finals with Halak. The Rangers I thought played a very average series, if they didn't have Lundqvist I doubt they would have even reached Game 7 (although Anderson played very well also).

I'm going to go out on a limb and take the Caps in 7, why not? I thought they'd do nothing in the first round, turns out they were working toward this time all along, I guess. I didn't see them really put it together until about 80 games into the year, but that is the right time to do it.

I'll even go further out and say that Ovechkin has a decent series. How about Semin? Where did that come from? He was playing hard every shift. Hunter did a nice job managing minutes and pulling strings, I thought.

The Flyers should have no trouble with the Devils, who would have continued their playoff losing streak if they didn't run into kind of a weak opponent. Flyers power-play is on fire, their PK went from top-ranked to just rank in short order. I like Philly in six or less.

In the West, I mean you can nitpick this or that but both series have even teams. I took Nashville to win the Cup so I am kind of forced to take them but I think Phoenix might get them. They will have to hold home ice to do it, if Nashville gets the split here, I think they are boned. Nashville in 6.

STL-LA is going to be a brutal series, guys are just going to beat the shit out of each other. Could be seven games and seven goals lol, although there is always the odd high-scoring affair in those types of series. I like the Blues because they were great at home during the year and they took care of business there during the first round. Yes, they lost once but 2-1 was better than most teams and they really should have won all three. How they failed to score in the first OT of Game 1 remains a mystery to me. They win their home games and they win the series, I actually think they will get 3/4 and a road win, so they win in 7.

I'm going with 5 shutouts... One isn't happening tonight, but between the 2 series, I think 5 is a number that's not out of reach...

In response to Reply # 16

and I might take the under, I am going to say three.

teams find ways to score.

phoenix was pretty lucky tonight. they were lucky that they didn't give up more in the third for openers. that goal that was reviewed they got a quick whistle. the faceoff, in a way it exemplified hanzal's value. plays d, blocks shots, stands in front, wins faceoffs (ding), creates space (ding). but really they got a lucky bounce off the puck drop that made it happen. well-timed risk, i guess, definitely was a set play aided by a bounce.

Would it surprise you if Smith had one shut out in this series?? What about Rinne getting one shut out?? and Quick?? and Elliot??

If each goalie just got 1 shutout, that would be 4 already... 5 is a high number, but not out of reach by any means...

More likely that any given guy records zero than two. In the first round, the four guys had two between them, three sort of since Elliot played a little more than half of a shutout in relief of Halak. So I think 3-4 seems right.

even the broadcast booths now are moving up to the top.

in san jose there is not even a press box, it is scaffolding high above the arena. like some shit van damme would have chased a villain around during "sudden death." if you're scared of heights, it's not for you.

beers after a game sound good, i usually leave the arena just after 11. hit up mic specialist, he has my number.

It's pretty well supported scaffolding that hangs down off the roof, there is a perimeter row that goes around all four sides and that is where everyone sits. Then there is a little mess of connecting alleys from one side to the other with big sandbags hanging down that you have to kind of side step as you cross over to get a soda or whatever (hot dog, pretzels, soda, pretty bare bones food setup!). There are desks along all the perimeter rows, they have enough space for three computers on the corners and maybe six on each one on the sides. There are three rows of wire (kind of like a wrestling or boxing ring) to enclose each row of scaffolding.

It sounds pretty weird because it is. It's kind of funny to look at. There was some kid there from their minor league team once, they had a big crew of the Worcester kids in there because they'd been knocked out of the AHL playoffs, who kind of freaked out. He was like "Where is my seat?" and then got pretty nervous, I think they moved him into a regular seat.

I don't dread it that much but I was relieved in the playoffs when they set up a secondary set of press seating which had a better view and normal tables/chairs.

The story is that when they designed the arena they overlooked luxury suites and press seating. To put them in with the plan as it was, they would have had to reduce the capacity to like 13,000 or so. So they delayed construction and put in the boxes, somehow the press seating fell by the wayside anyway. I think that's why they played in the Cow Palace initially, delay in building the arena.

i am probably making it out to sound scarier than it is but it's pretty goddamn weird. i've never seen anything like it. there are some kind of cramped ones but a lot of them are nice. boston is killer, seating ALL the way around the upper bowl, good ass food, plenty of elbow room, etc. philly is pretty good, too. staples is not bad, if they have the finals there then they will have a lot of seating. when i stay for clippers games i am all alone so they must have a separate nba press box the same way they have separate nba locker rooms.

In response to Reply # 26

Not to take anything away from them but if that set the tone for the series then I really like Nashville's chances. It was luck in a "residue of opportunity and design" kind of way, but still luck.

The Preds dragged a little coming out but in the third period and OT they were dominant. Smith played huge for PHX. That goal that was reviewed probably should have counted, quick whistle saved them. Then the OT they don't have a lot of possession. Get an offensive zone draw and a PERFECT bounce off the puck drop.

Don't get me wrong, I was talking about Hanzal a couple days ago and said he was the guy player in the series because 1) he wins draws 2) he creates space 3) he goes to the dirty areas and gets his stick on pucks (plus plays great defense and blocks shots). He did all those things there but the way he was able to win it and how they executed that cleanly was all off the hop.

Game 2 is pretty big, if Nashville wins I think they win the series, if PHX wins I think they have a very good chance.

damn Quick stole that game. They were lucky to get out of the first period tied 1-1. Blues dominated the whole period. They got lazy for a minute and the Kings were able to tie it up. I think that took the wind out of their sails. They never looked the same after that. Kings controlled the second period. Blues again let their guard down after King's penalty and we got that shorty. I love the way we are playing right now. Even when we cant get our offense going our defense and goal keeping are solid.

yeah like hitchcock said they "deferred" or backed off a lot after the first period. i couldnt really figure out why. they took all those penalties late in the game, too. kings did nothing on them but it ran the time off the clock, six key minutes. that buried them.

quick made some crazy saves in that weird ass crab stance, sort of a sprawl but not exactly. kiprusoff has a similar one but he doesn't flatten out. made one on mcdonald in the first and another similar rebound save late in the game where i though the blues would score for sure.

kings are in pretty good shape, steal a game on the road plus take out their most important/best skater. was just a careless play but i am expecting a one game suspension, two max. it could be for the rest of the series and it would still be a huge advantage, pietrangelo chews up minutes, runs their power play and matches up with the kopitar line.

a lot more guys because they are going to have a big club of black aces coming. manchester is done playing in the AHL and toffoli's junior club got eliminated from the OHL playoffs. so they will have a shitload of guys in town.

that said, it won't be any of those guys, it will be clifford when he's ready, loktionov until then or maybe westgarth although sutter has dressed him really sparingly it seems. he played pretty well in the playoffs last year, obviously gives them a heavyweight. i'd bank on loktionov though, playing on the fourth line.

I literally almost threw my remote into the brick wall beneath my t.v. at some of the penalties they were taking. Backes said it best "the difference was special teams...we took a rest and they kept going" I can't even speak on Alex's injury yet, because I'm still too upset about it. We lost the first one against San Jose, but we outplayed them and lost in the end...last night we got beat the fuck up.

48. "Kind of frustrating but a win is a win"
In response to Reply # 46

Bad start AGAIN. At least this time they had an excuse.

Took control at 2-1, couldn't cash in after.

Simmonds huge miss!

BS call against Carle leads to power-play goal off a broken play. That had to be the most frustrating sequence.

G's goal seems to put them back in command. Too much indecision though, no aggression but not a complete prevent defense either. The way they shut down Game 6 against Pitt is how they should have played or just kept the game open a little while longer.

Then they dominate the OT and have a goal disallowed.

All's well that ends well but they should have nailed that game down earlier.

NJ's best players were their best players mostly. Henrique nice, active game. Parise and Elias were their only consistent threats. Brodeur with some monster stops. Volchenkov made a couple mistakes but in general played his role well.

Really shitty games from Kovalchuk and Zidlicky though, wow, Kovalchuk has something slowing him down. Not much of a stride skating, no extension going for pucks and weak(er than usual) along the boards.

I love the Flyers chances in this series, Grossman came back today, maybe Mez will be back at the end of it. Timonen was strong today, great pass to G on that third goal, really showed how underrated he is as a one-on-one player, too, most notably when he buried Parise on the rush.

59. "I still see some cracks in their team but the overall push"
In response to Reply # 58

is strong.

Power play is still garbage and something they will need to fix if they want to keep playing.

Evenness of effort is still a little off, too. They had two wins in the Vancouver series that they could have just as easily lost.

I think tonight they had kind of a similar trajectory to the Blues in Game 1, from the first intermission on they had maybe half a dozen shots tops. They did a nice job competing in the physical game and killing penalties (had to kill a lot, sort of weighted their total) but if they weren't staked to a huge lead I wouldn't have had that much confidence. St Louis clearly outplayed them in the third period, Quick had to make some really big saves to keep the door shut.

You're going to have some runs go against you, it's the playoffs with high stakes and high quality opponents, but I could still stand to see them with a little heavier foot on the gas. Tonight was a good start to that in some ways, they need to keep it rolling now.

It would be a colossal feat for them to lose this series now but Phoenix is playing a really crisp game and if Nashville rallies it will be for that same reason. Big thing is power play, have to get opportunistic there. 0/15 these two teams tonight, Jesus.

In response to Reply # 62

seat data usually gives you a view from the exact seat you enter. it's small and crappy if you don't register but it should be good enough to show what you want to see. they might charge to register, like i said though there was a free view the last time i used it.

okay maybe you can help me. I am in section 112 row 1 seats 14 and 15. I know this section is right next to the penalty boxes. from the view I am able to get I can count 15 seats in the first row. which side would I be on? If I remember correctly if you are facing the ice the seats are numbered from left to right. Also if I am next to the penalty boxes which teams would I be next to. I sent an email to the staples center, so far no response.

I dunno if I've ever seen us play that bad of a defensive game. The PP was TOTALLY inept. The attempt on the 5 on 3 chance made me cringe. We really needed Carlo and Polak to step it up and they DID NOT. I wonder if these dudes were inside their own heads last night. Something wasn't right. We're too good of a defensive team to have played like that. Damn, I know our best player wasn't out there, but I don't know what Petro could have even done to change the shit that was going on out there. I believe in these guys and I know we can get one in L.A. Shit was mad frustrating to watch, though.

66. "To me they were pretty flustered throughout the lineup"
In response to Reply # 63

Some guys located their sack and played better, I thought Backes kind of led that charge and got Oshie and a couple other guys going.

Carlo was definitely disrupted, he was responding to every little thing and getting distracted. Had a crappy turnover the led to a goal, too, one of those plays where one mistake compounds another and leads to a real big one.

I saw that Halak will be unavailable the rest of the series. I don't think it's a huge deal since Elliot has been good but it's another limitation for sure. Allen is a fine prospect but he basically has zero experience. They are married to Elliot big time now. Anybody can have ONE pull-worthy game, especially since half the time a guy is pulled it's more a reflection of the guys in front of him.

I dunno, it would take a pretty major feat for the Kings to lose the series now. Maybe in a first round series a team can overcome to home losses (Boston did it last year) but as the rounds march on that's even tougher to accomplish.

Kings PP looked shitty, too, but goddamn, Blues had NINE power plays. Like you said that 5on3 was a disaster and it might not have been their worst one.

I think they will come out hard in Game 3 though, it's basically an elimination game for them so it's kind of tough to pick against them IMO.

Rads and Andrei Kostitsyn suspended for game 3 for partying in Scottsdale until 4 AM the night before game two.

We had a solid, defensive minded team before all the trade deadline additions and were still one of the west's best squads. Time to put up or shut up.

Well...Kings too good. For some reason we only play with energy for like 1 period per game...tonight it was the third. As good as Brian Elliot has been for us this season, it seems the well has run dry. Elliot gave up some bad goals tonight...period. The one to make it 4-2 was an absolute life taker, though. We were down 3-2 and hustling. Petro had just made a brilliant play for a chance that was stopped, but momentum was coming around. No less than a minute later...BANG. Elliot lets one trickle through his five hole. Backbreaker. While it would be great, we are not coming back from a 3-0 defecit. It was a fun year and I really did expect us to go further, but you have to give it up to the Kings right now. My, God...Quick is incredible. Hey, Chris Stewart...nice of you to join us.

In response to Reply # 84

at the right time

kings are a team that is built for the playoffs, not saying i called their success but that was the thinking behind their construction and it's working out.

blues are a really young group, don't know how to manage their bodies, emotions and efforts. when the season has typically ended for them, they had to find out that with each passing game life gets a lot harder.

like hitchcock said the other day, it was a successful season. had they gotten in and dudded out in round 1, that would have been a real disappointment. they got in, they beat a good team and they have something to move forward with.

you can just see this team doesn't have it right now. the break was good for elliot, but not good enough. halak is going to win the job long term anyway IMO. i thought that was not the biggest problem in either of the last two games though. no mental focus, no consistency. you look at the real deflating goals in the first two games, all dumbass mistakes, rookie shit. last night, zero discipline. you have to give the kings credit, guys like brown and richards have played relatively clean games and agitated like crazy.

but stewie was right, he said this is the time of year where you have to take a punch in the face or a busted lip, not get caught up in the games within games and just go for wins. they've had trouble with that in games 2 and 3 for sure.

playoff hockey is unfuckwitable live. seats on the glass are fucking unbelievable. First off the Kings are playing some incredible hockey right now. Well that and the Blues looked like someone killed their puppy after the first fucking goal. I swear those guys need some fucking heart. I thought they were going to come out strong. Hitting and starting some shit...WRONG! Kings came out and had a solid first. Blues were lucky to get out of it with only 1 goal scored. Seriously after that goal was scored they looked flat. They were playing with no energy. I was directly across from the bench and it was dead. Nobody talking and half the guys had their heads down. There were several hits on the glass directly in front of us. One threw my phone into my lap. But shit it was like a car crash every time someone hit the ice. It was insane. Plus sitting that close you really see how crowded it gets out there. These guys are doing some pretty impressive shit at insane speeds. Fuck I am so pumped still.

Almost forgot Elliot looked shook out there. Dude was shaky the entire game. He looked confused and frustrated. After that first goal he had this look like fuck not again.

Its either a whole new series, or a step away from the end

I fully back Trotz in his decision to keep ARad and AK46 on the healthy scratch list. Are they more talented than Tootoo and Craig Smith? If each guy was giving 100%, absolutely. However, Toots is a 110% guy after stewing on the scratch list against Detroit, and Smith played solidly in game 3. Let them sit in the press box for one more game, pull out the win, and get them extra motivated.

Radulov in particular has shown that his biggest motivation is money. His curfew fuck up will undoubtedly effect his next contract to some degree, he'll be hungry to come out hard. Andrei is a free agent also, hopefully whenever he gets out of the dog house, he'll be extra motivated as well.

LETS GO PREDS

He is a pretty skilled player. I cannot say I understand the approach to him this season, they scratched him during a hot streak (second short period of scratches) and I guess Trmotz liked the lineup more with him out of it or playing less. I can remember a couple times when they came here they had him playing with Hornqvist and getting a lot of power play minutes.

I still think he will be a very good player, 65-ish point guy with sound defense.

Doan's goal was a softie BS piece of shit, but our lack of offense completely killed us. Our possession in their zone was apathetic and just awful. The energy that Tootoo brought in game 3 wasn't there, and we wiffed on at least 3 chip shots. Smith played solid, but the clean sheet was more to do with us choking than him standing on his head. We should have skated the two more talented players than tried to roll with what worked in game 3 when adrenaline was pumping and we had something to prove.

Wilson has always been in Trotz's dog house. Last year, he was a scratch for almost the whole playoffs, this year, scratched the entire Wing series and only inserted in game 2. The only logical reasoning I've heard is that Trotz wants to skate two lines with top 6 forwards, and two lines with hard checking, blue collar skaters. Colin doesn't fit into the latter, and with the pickup of Rads and AK46, was the 7th man out. Regardless, I completely agree with your assessment, he has the talent and skill to put up 60 points if he were ever to crack one of the top two lines with some solid wingers, and he is even very capable of playing wing with a good C and LW. Instead we skate Legwand, the only remaining original Predator, and he either plays lights out, or completely shits the bed with no consistency. Trotz is a coach very much like Dusty Baker or Larry Brown, giving no tick to more talented youngsters and always playing vets, even when not deserved.

So fucking frustrating that we couldn't at least bang one home (we got horrifically jobbed out of one in the 3rd) to at least push it to OT. Like I said, down 3-1 is a completely different series headed back to Glendale than tied 2-2.

We can still do it, but (completely obviously) it is going to be tough as shit.

They run their operation uniquely and, more to the point, they've had ongoing problems with Radulov. Taking him back was kind of a deal with the devil for a playoff push.

It would have seemed odd to reinstate one and not the other. Who knows what has been going with Kostitsyn internally?

Anyway, they paid a high price.

TO THE EXTREME!

Every game has essentially been dramatic and exciting, or a complete snoozefest. There is no in between this year.

Nashville is trying hard to make me take a nap. My god, they have to at least try to waiver from their "score first and shut it down" mentality, especially when down a goal.

St. Louis is just being blown out of the water. I hope between them and the Preds, this kills the reemergence of turning the ice into molasses as a defense strategy.

Seriously though... the final four teams COULD be...

LA
Phoenix
New Jersey
Washington

I'm sure everyone had them as the major cup contending teams this year.

Big goal that a guy with a lower motor might have let die when Fraser missed that loose puck plus a fight where he showed up against a stronger, tougher, more mature opponent.

Love that kid, been saying he would make the NHL since they drafted him. If you're a big kid with wheels and a pro coach for a dad, you've got a good shot.

Fore-check was savage tonight. That first period looked like a video game where the sliders were turned up, tons of speed, power and pressure. They brought it back at the end, too, that had to be one of the more feeble six-on-fives i've ever seen.

Quick was awesome for about 25 minutes tonight. Defense I thought did a good job clearing rebounds and helping him but at least half a dozen times he had to make two saves in rapid succession.

In the course of ONE series, Hitcock compared Quick to Belfour, Brodeur, Hasek and Sawchuk. OK company, no?

i dont think they have an individual forward as good as iginla and kipper/quick is a wash but after that they are loaded by comparison. flames had no one like doughty and the kings have a couple guys like regehr.

that team came within one win of beating a champ that basically went wire to wire as the top team and had almost no injuries all season.

that said, you can get tested in a hurry. this phoenix team is a pretty mean bunch on the back end and they don't lack grit up front either even without torres.

i think yandle and ekman larsson have to be wearing targets. get everything in deep and hit those guys a lot. i think they can get to OEK early in the series sort of like the rangers did to karlsson. yandle is shifty, he can burn you if you overpursue but he's probably the single most important skater in their lineup.

i dont know anyone who seriously expected a lot out of this flyers team. they gutted their forward corps, brought in a bunch of teenagers, their big FA signing had mixed results at best and they had significant injuries.

most flyers FANS didn't expect them to beat pittsburgh, let alone go on to win the Cup.

the playoffs test teams in a lot of ways. if you've got inexperience, moodiness, physical pain, etc, those things can work against you. look at st louis, vancouver, boston, et al.

flyers are ge'tting that now. defense is beat up along with a couple guys up front. they have a bunch of rookies in significant roles. timonen, their steadiest guy, is way overextended. on down the line. they're not excuses, they're reasons.

what was the pens' excuse? had their full complement of players for the first time in months and were hot as hell (albeit with flaws in their game) going into the playoffs. they have a veteran team with a lot of continuity. they just lost it and got their asses handed to them, 20 lunches eaten.

And neither of these teams are going to accomplish that thing.

The difference is most Flyer fans I know reacted like they just won the cup by advancing to round 2. A tweet I got from a fan sums it up well

"nothing will ever be sweeter than send them penguins home!!!!"

Of course I'm salty, we were cup favorites and almost got swept out of round 1 by a rival team. But how long will I really remember that for and care about it? 1 year? 3 or 4 at most? However another year that Flyers fans have to talk themselves into anything but a championship being an awesome result because it's the only success they know is another inch added to my smile.

Flyers have made the playoffs basically every year of their existence. More Finals, more division titles, more hall of famers, international following and basically responsible for the success of a VERY risky expansion.

You can say they haven't won a Cup since 1975 but you could also say the Pens didn't win a Cup UNTIL 1991, a long time after 1974. Pens have one other conference title, Flyers have six.

Pittsburgh has had some incredible players and two really formidable eras as a result but their rest of their history is as forgettable as an afternoon shit.

The Flyers are an elite franchise. The Penguins are an above average one.

The funny thing is that I don't even hate the Penguins. My favorite player is Mario Lemieux. This is the first bunch of Pens I've hated and I even like a few guys on this team like Fleury and guys who bailed like Scuderi. I don't have the appropriate level of hate for them. But when their fans think they have a better franchise, pffft, that is just laughable.

The Penguins didn't win a championship before I was born but I can remember celebrating 3 of them which is what really matters to me rather than hearing my dad talk about the good ol days.

The Flyers haven't achieved the #1 goal of every team in every sport in almost 40 years, but at least you can talk about those titles (and really most of your hall of famers) based on what you read in books right?

You can have more hall of famers, more banners that don't come with a Stanley cup and more allusions of grandeur, I'll take witnessing 3 championships over boasting about anything else, because none of that stuff is ever the goal. But I can see why you want to use that other stuff to make it on par with a title.

Infact let me spin it this way, and I look forward to you honestly telling me that it's a good bragging point.

The University of Pittsburgh football team has 9 national titles and is top 3 in terms of Hall of Fame NFL players to graduate the school. Do I really have the right to boast to a school such as Miami with almost no history before the 80s? Infact they have even been to a BCS game (and lost) more recently than Miami. These are all things you are using to support the Flyers dominance as a better overall team.

I mean you are talking ANCIENT history there, they had one in the '70s and prior to that their most recent one was the '30s!

I saw guys like Kerr and Hextall play, hell I see Hextall three times a week RIGHT TODAY. I've met all these guys, Parent, Clarke, Kelly, Watson brothers, Howe, Leach, Barber, Schultz, et al.

The guys you'd be talking about with Pitt football have been dead a long time, probably since before you were born.

Let's compare apples and apples here, could, for example, an Edmonton fan still take pride in what their team accomplished? Is it still greater than what a much more recent Cup winner has done? Of course. And they really just had one period of dominance.

Nothing wrong with the Pens or being a fan of them but franchise for franchise the two are the exact same age and the Flyers have accomplished much more.

But there is also something to be said about recent title success. We are in 2012 which means championships in the 70s and 80s are not quite as relevant as they used to be. Which is basically the whole point I've been making with the 1975 anyway.

If you were a say 40 year old Islanders fan then yes you have a more successful hockey team than I do historically.

If you are 30 like me though then I don't want to hear it since you were 1 the last time they won.

Same reason you probably wouldn't take me rubbing the Pirates having more World Series than the Phillies in your face as a worthwhile argument, which I wouldn't try to do because how far away they were makes them so irrelevant.

if you can endure a decade on end of irrelevance, great, you get the payoff. in the meantime you can leave your team hanging and let them look for possible relocation cities.

if you want to watch a competitive team and go to the playoffs every year in front of the biggest crowds in the league, you stick with the flyers. i don't regret for a second seeing them beat the pens in 7 in 2000 or rally from 0-3 against the Bruins or that utterly spectacular sequence to knock the Leafs out of the 04 conference semi-finals.

in evaluating a team AND in supporting them, more than championships count.

I'll leave it at that because that was a dumb example that is nothing like a team with more titles overall and more in the recent past using it in an argument vs a rival.

a suspension, IMO.

The "IMO" being key.

But Shanahan's created his own world of precedents and criteria such that unless a guy is injured for life, there's no way to figure out what's going to happen.

Both guys finish the game and now after the fact it's a full game he has to miss? An elimination game?

You throw your shoulder into a guy's shoulder and he moves a little, you hit his head. There was some more recklessness than that here but I'm just saying not every high hit or even ones that connect with the head are some vile attempt to injure.

Like you said, the precedents are all tangled. If you look at the first round, the Penguins threw half a dozen hits like that, which were did not result in suspensions. Giroux has no significant history either.

Let's not even bring up the name Weber here.

Worst suspension of the playoffs by far, even had they suspended King for his hit on Petro I would have understood much more readily (actually there was precedent for that).

in these instances is stupid to begin with.

If you intentionally hit a guy in the head, especially like this where it was inarguably away from the play, there should be a 5 min major and a short suspension.

but Giroux came from somewhat behind him.

So it took clear intent from Giroux to make initial contact with Zubrus' head and not his shoulder or chest.

It really doesn't help Giroux's case that he spent that entire shift whining & crying to the refs and skating around angrily, before finally finding someone to hit way away from the play.

Tortorella takes a top seed wire to wire despite scrappy efforts from opponents (Rangers have had a tougher time than Tampa though) while Sutter takes a lower seed through the three division winners to steal the West.

Brad Richards is Tortorella's top guy again. Sutter's captain playing his balls off, just Brown instead of Iginla this time.

Quick and Kipper are obviously pretty similar in style and effectiveness. Bulin and Hank maybe a little less so but not so much, both play kind of deep and have been dialed in.

Lots of playoff experience and good leadership. Coyotes are old as shit. OEK is not a typical first full-year player, he'll be fine. First Swedish D Man in recent years that I think actually deserves the "poor man's Lidstrom" label. Smart player, smooth player.

Kings were built for the playoffs if you think about it:

Doughty, gold medalist

Richards, Memorial Cup, Calder Cup, World Junior gold, Olympic gold, Stanley Cup finalist

Scuderi, Stanley Cup winner

Williams, Stanley Cup winner

Greene, Stanley Cup finalist

Stoll, Stanley Cup finalist

Penner, Stanley Cup winner

Carter, Calder Cup, World Junior gold, Stanley Cup finalist

Outside of some rookies everyone has playoff experience, I mean Brown and Kopitar have been excellent and didn't even make the list above.

I want to be bitter and say three quick whistles that discounted Preds goals in three if the losses changed the series, but the Yotes truly earned it, and as a fan of a franchise who has had to deal with shitty ownership in the past, relocation rumors, and prejudice from traditional market teams and fans, I hope they go all the way

Now we face the biggest offseason in franchise history. 80% chance Suter is gone if you were to ask me today. Rads may defect again, most of our rentals are gone, and we have 10+ other free agents

Havlat gave the Sharks six top six guys and slide everyone else into the proper role, same thing with Carter. King and Nolan also helped round out the Kings, their bottom six was a joke until those guys showed up, not even a threat to threaten to score.

It helped guys like Stoll and Penner for sure.

logically speaking, king was in line for a roster spot and murray had always liked him. thought with the coaching change he might get lost. he's kind of what you see is what you get.

nolan i thought had the best summer of any player, including voynov and toffoli who were both strong. he's taken a while for his hands to catch up to his feet but he looks strong. think he will be a very good checker who can move up onto a scoring line in a pinch. i think he'll turn into a guy who owns the boards, which is a good fit with a couple scorers.

What you said would be fine if they lost to the Kings but they lost to Phoenix. Vermette has been good for them but getting a veteran forward doesn't compare with what Nashville or LA did.

It's kind of funny because late in the season both Phoenix and Nashville got away from their usual grinding game, loosened up in a negative way. Coyotes managed to get back on track though.

Not to be THAT guy, but one of my friends is pretty "in" with the players and she says that Stuart is gone and already back in Cali. The wifey has put her foot down on re-signing. It would take an overpayment for him to stay.

He's a great 3/4 d-man and it sucks we're losing him... but if means a shot at Suter and Parise, I'll pack his bags!

Go Wings.

In response to Reply # 151

depending how you look at it they had between seven and ten NHL caliber defenseman, including some all-stars. they wound up putting a wounded group out there that was overextended from top to bottom and it showed big time.

average play elsewhere but they couldn't get out of their own zone to save their lives and were soft at key times defending in their own end.

lots of sloppy mistakes all over the lineup.

the playoffs test you in a lot of ways, your emotional composition, how your team fits together, what your body can withstand, etc. all those things took their toll and the flyers folded.

The rest definitely helps NJ and they are playing pretty focused but I still favor NYR in that matchup if it happens.

Win or lose, this transformation is unheralded in DC hockey.

The Joel Ward penalty loss was super painful and cringeworthy, but none of the problems from the previous years' teams are present. Plus... Holtby. Holy God. Gotta get me a Holtby jersey.

the 3OT and the OT. huge.

hunter has gotten gully. to this point, i thought the neutering of what was a fun team was a painfully pointless exercise. the first year they went to defense first, they cut down about 35 goals allowed and gave up about 80 goals for. it was stupid.

this is the right guy to make them a gritty, patient team. buy in is huge, look at he's gotten out of semin and to some extent ovie and even green.
