"[THE OFFICIAL 2012 PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES POLITICAL PARTY]"

Lets start this campaign right.
The window is closing and we need to get down to business.

1 run wins?
i'll take em.
nail biting finishes?
sign me up.
world fuckin series?
i like it.

Chase and Ryan hurry back.
Things could be worse.
Galvis is lookin sharp and Ruben is a free agent genius.

First series vs a pesky Pirates team... then home opener vs Miami.

I'm not ready for the potential wasted gems of our pitchers giving up just 1-3 runs but we still take a L because our fucking bats come up shorter then a impotent mouse dick.

I'll wish for the best outta Vic, JMJ & Pence.. but my faith as of now is we bunt our way to victory n shit

OUR lineup should be
Pierre
Polly
JRo
Pence
Vic
JMJ
Galvis
Ruiz
Until we get Chase and Ryan back
JMJ is our 1st baseman
Nix and Wiggington are dogshit
We need a set lineup
The shuffling the last few years drove me crazy

Skipping the scoring slumps, the injuries, the Charlie isms, the five batters hitting near .245 and Chase getting only 25% of the blame he should get.

Not a damn thing.

I'm concerned about his talent evaluation.
His mid to late season roster tweaks seem to be lacking.
His trades are grand but he has a huge age issue right now that he needs to address.

He reminds me of a better Billy King but still Billy King. Which is to say he loves handing out big money but doesnt quite know how to put together a winner.

16. "Disagree. Our bench has been horrible with Ruben"
In response to Reply # 13

And the bench played a major role in getting that chip.

Ruben loaded up in starting pitching and locked up Chase and Howard. But he ignored the catalyst bats.

On top of that, he is Charlie's boss and I hate teams who dont steal bases. Especially teams who have most of their line up batting in the .245 range allllll year. Charlie never runs and his boss should be on his head about that or get more speed on the bench.

So we have:

Charlie needs to be smacked around: Ruben's fault
Bats off the bench: Ruben's fault
Fixing the declining batting avg in lineup: Ruben's fault
Adding speed to the lineup: Ruben's fault
Not knowing Chase would still be hurt this year and forever: Ruben's fault

Can we also add not appropriately planning for Ryan Howard not being ready to come back from an Achilles tear by May? This bothers me more than the Chase thing, because thats probably more on Chase than anyone else. Sorry, but Wigginton and Layne Nix are not suitable long term replacements. Plus even if they were, they are the same types of hitters that have been killing us in the playoffs the last 2 years. High strikeouts, low OBP.

If last seasons series against the Cards was not a wake up call that the way the offense is assembled was flawed, I dont know what would be.

This is still my main issue with Rube:

>Fixing the declining batting avg in lineup: Ruben's fault

Please stop signing guys that only swing for the fences.

That being said, nice to see Blanton have a game like last night and T-Wig did have a quality game at first catching Blatons errant throw and hitting the HR.

and can run when on them?

You don't need the Big Bopper lineup we used to have in the early part of the run with this pitching staff, plus the best pieces of that are either hurt or gone.

How do you see all that from our last two flame-outs & decide giving Pap 50 million is what we need most?

Yeah, its like Rube can't help but overpay to make a big splash in free agency right off the bat. I guess in hindsight the Phils are still better off than signing Madson to less years and $$$ since he blew his arm out and all...but I thought the way the offense checked out in the last 2 postseasons would have signified a change in offensive philosphy.

A Fernando Rodney-type closer for a one or 2 year deal made (makes) a lot more sense. The Phillies do not need be a team signing relievers to the biggest deals in history. Let some scrub team make those kind of moves.

I am trying not to be doom-and-gloom since it is so early on, but I really think this team is seriously flawed. Praying to the black jesus that Ryan Howard is back by June 1 and looks more like the 2006-2009 version.

and his opening day start was a shutout

The book around the league the last couple of years has been to swing early

once he gets settled down, it's over

so it wouldn't surprise me if the majority of his runs allowed have come in the first few innings

It's amazing to watch this guy hand the ball to the bullpen in the 9th inning

EVERY GAME

and with batters swinging early

his pitch count stays low

In response to Reply # 0

I was hoping for some semblance of the performance from last year, but he literally has not hit the ball out of the infield in his last 12 at bats. And of his 32 at bats on the season, 15 have either resulted in a strike out or infield pop up. And he hasn't drawn a walk yet this year. He's pretty much garbage, which is what he had been his whole career before half a season last year. Probably why the Rangers took Greg Golson for him.

Polanco stinks too. In case anyone was wondering. Wish we used some of that Papelbon money to sign a decent outfielder.

This really wasn't the year to keep a charity case on the bench. So glad I fell asleep during the game last night. If I was awake for that 10th inning with Thome and Mayberry not being able to drive in a runner from third with one out I would have been up all night.

necessary in terms of the smaller pickups that add depth, plug holes & subsequently win games.

Once this team went ace-starter heavy, the move to more 'moneyball' type of guys getting on base should have started.

They should never be counting on Utley ever again. I love Chase but he is on his way out like Brandon Roy.

Howard we can only hope.

But this team is not built for a big-bopper middle-order thing like it was in the first half of this run.

And Chollie also needs to work on doing some things to manufacture runs but his mind doesn't really trend that way.

For instance yesterday down at Petco, top of the sixth inning of a game we're down 2-0 with no offense in where Halladay had just had our only base hit & then got forced out at second to leave Pierre on first with two outs & Polanco coming up.

Why on earth wouldn't you send Pierre there?

What's the worst that can happen?

Polanco take a pitch & Pierre's either safe in scoring position or out then leading off next inning to start with one of the three major-league hitters in our lineup up?

Or Polanco swings & gets a fly-ball out in which case Pierre is irrelevant or they have only a play at first on a grounder or a chance for him to score on a double?

I mean, that shit is basic.

These are the kinds of reasons why I wanted Jim 'Took a Break During His Interview With Millhouse To Go Buy Another Pack Of Smokes At The Turf Club' Leyland back when they decided to hire Chollie because he'd been Thome's bat boy.

I mean we did get a title out of this run & I love Chollie as a man but let's be real that one ring was about the minimum level of result for a team with this roster/budget/fan-base.

Now Lee's on the DL.

Good thing they gave Punchable-Face-Pap 50 million.

Hard to get excited about this team right now when all signs point to this team going the way of its aging core.

...with Lee & Roy we should still milk a couple more good years outta them IMO, but our offense.. yea.. is just fucking depressing.

This is like... the last two post-seasons extended to an entire 162 game schedule.

It's that fucking sad, yo. This could very well be the worst use of good pitching I seen in a good minute. The guys who goes at bat sucks and they know it, so team morale is at an all time low. And the added pressure will fucking break our pitchers, shit it already knocked out Lee.

This is gonna be very fucking depressing. Is any of our guys hitting over .270 at this point?

When these guys start coming off the disabled list, they are going to need to make room for them. Thome has sucked balls and looks like he is done.

Are they gonna have the balls to cut the folk hero when Utley and Howard are set to come back? If not, how do you make room for them? Galvis back to minors and cut option/cut Nix or Pierre?

One bad start does not equal struggling. I'll take giving up 2 runs in one weird inning just about anytime. Anyone that complains about Halladay instead of the myriad of issues this teams has should be punched in the face. Seems like Phils fans are very quick to bash Hallday or Hamels after one bad game, yet Cliff Lee can do however bad he wants in any situation and he gets a pass. I think Halladay caught more flack for giving up 1 run in game 5 against the Cards, than Lee got for blowing a 4-0 lead in Game 2. Sometimes Philly fans are blindly stupid.

But yes, the bullpen has been terrible, and the typical shitty hitting has been typically shitty. They are just tough to watch right now. The never-ending lazy approach at the plate is excrutiating at this point. Blame Rube if anyone. I'm very close to hopping on the fire Charlie bandwagon if this keeps up, just for a potential different look. It's not like they will miss his "in-game" managing skills by any stretch, and who cares if his players like him if they all stink?

6 wins in a row and 6 wins for Cole. A few days ago I was going to make a 'official push for .500 and above' post, but didn't want to jinx us. I'm still frightened by our bullpen though - despite how well the big 3 are pitching and I hate our inability to play small ball when necessary to do so...

gonna be hot as fuck! Last I checked, the weather forecast said it would be 95 degrees. And when you're in the city, it always feels much hotter.

Very nice win last night. The bats came alive and Blanton - while still way off the mark - did enough to survive. I'm hoping when I see them Sunday that the Phills will be back to .500 and Lee will pick up his first Win of the year.

are they starting to draw again now that they're actually competitive for the first time in over a decade?

and no I don't want to actually talk about the Phillies on the field either.

easy to see why other parks made it the model

"are they starting to draw again now that they're actually competitive for the first time in over a decade?"

not from what I saw

I was at the Friday game

the LET'S GO PHILLIES chant was going strong until the middle innings

I had to ask my dad if the orioles even had a chant

standing ovation for Paps in the bottom of the 9th = HAHAHAHAHAHAHA

it was easily 50/50 PHI/BAL fans

we grabbed breakfast at the Harbor before hitting the road back on Saturday morning

literally every other person had phillies gear on

@10 AM

not every other fan

just every other person walking around the Harbor

I can only imagine the revenue we generated for BAL

but if all of those tickets are available

I can't imagine they're drawing many BAL fans

"and no I don't want to actually talk about the Phillies on the field either."

I got more joy out of heckling JRo jogging to 1st base on a groundout than anything else

I'm still having fun, win or lose

my wife and I. I definitely made sure to congradulate him on a) making it to the NBA and b)having an outstanding season (though in my head I'm thinking yeah, great except for the OKC series). We're both Towson alums so you know I had to say something and I figured there's no way he remembered playing pick up ball against me during open gyms back in the day.

Anyway, I'd say Camden Yards was at 90-95% capacity which was very commendable considering it was 95 degrees and with the humidity, felt much hotter. I've gone to Camden Yards at least 50 or more times over the past 20 years and sadly to say, this was the most full I've ever witnessed it. I saw the Friday and Saturday games were basically at 100% capacity though. Overall attendance still isn't where it used to be in the 90s.

Overall it was definitely a great experience. I knew Philly fans (like myself) would be out in droves, but I didn't expect them to take over the stadium to the degree in which they did. Imo, Philly fans were far more vocal than O's fans on Sunday.

I don't quite understand how the Phillies are fifth in the NL in runs. Ruiz is out of control, obviously, but I don't see what else is going so right that no Howard, no Utley, and kind of "eh" seasons from Rollins and Polanco and Victorino hasn't entirely sunk the lineup.

With the serious injuries to redletter stars, there's a lot of potential to go all 2011 Twins here. But I guess the lineup is way less stars-n-scrubs and more stars and kinda good players. Still, it strikes me as a pretty impressive job of treading water so far. Is it Manuel's doing?

for all the offense Wigginton has generated, he has booted his fair share of catch-able balls. offense is no longer the problem, but base running mistakes and mental errors have really hurt us. We would be above .500 if we just played fundamentally sound baseball.

I feel like he's spent his entire career being acquired as somebody who'd make a really nice offensive-minded infield bench option, but then something goes wrong and he gets pressed into fulltime-ish duty where his glove gets exposed. That leads his current team to offer him simply a warm handshake and a "good luck" at the end of the year. And the cycle starts again.

Anyhow, thanks for answering. That makes sense.

Good grief, this team is miserable to watch! How did a team that used to be so clutch suddenly become so un-clutch? The base running is atrocious and our relief pitching is wretched. Cliff Lee, what the fuck happened to you? Ugh, I knew the injuries would hamper us, but there's no excuse for how poorly and dumb the Phil's have been playing.

Hopefully this team can pull a Voltron. Otherwise, it might an ugly offseason for our Phillies. I still got faith. My DVR is filling up with recordings I don't even bother to watch. Shit is ugly.

Hate to say it, but Chollie might get the ax soon. However, Ruben is the one who failed to deliver us a good bullpen and went cheap on offensive help. Sorry but you cant turn Ty Wigginton or Nix into good fielders no matter what environment they're in. Amaro should have focused on one or the other and he did neither.

This is all on the players. However, because so many of them are under contract (ie- Cliff Lee) there is no accountability and they just don't give a fuck. Thanks guys.

Considering even WITH a theoratically healthy Howard, you'd want to stockpile on bats. And now without him and management's answer is "HEY GUYS GUESS WHOSE COMING BACK!! JIM 'Too old to do any fielding & much rather be a DH in the AL, otherwise just make me a pitch hitter' THOME!! YAAAAAY WE GOT HITTING AGAIN, U GUYS HAPPY?!?!?! EH EH EH EH EH?!?"

And we trade that guy away after it was obvious it was, not gonna work out like that, too bad we are restricted by that bullshit National League rule but it's whatever -___-

Even with a big turnaround tho my best hope is wildcard. I don't see us snatching division again, which means by mid-late August I may have to change the sig if nothing crazy happens

sit in despair wasting off-season money on guys who would be a good DH.

Then they romp on the Phillies when they come to AL stadiums.

I think it's stupid that a golf outing is the reason why the National League doesn't have a DH. Its all the Phillies and Pirates' fault.

They need to vote on that shit again!

almost single-handedly nipping any chance for momentum in the bud with his gas can he's been running out there all month.

Not to mention I hated him in Boston & I especially hated giving him 50 million dollars because Ruben has no imagination so he just goes after names.

But now (despite a pretty solid start) he and his punchable face are becoming extremely hatable.

Can we dump him at the deadline to a contender?

Because my only priority at this point in the season is to not trade Cole.

Who else was even bidding on this guy this past offseason......and can we flip him to them?

He's becoming a Vince Young type to me, a guy I hated when he was on another team but then hate on my own as well.

Maybe it's not quite open-market price but it's damn close. Amaro's love affair with Hamels continues.

Probably some needle-dick will come in here bemoaning another man's money and the future of a team said needle-dick dislikes, but I don't think you can ever be mad at locking down a star in favor of trading him for shined up question marks.

And surrounding them with good players.

Ruben's job is on the line this off-season though. Even with Cole here. They need to do something with the OF, bullpen, and 3rd base. On the cheap too since the billion owners and comcast has a budget now.

One off season, we can deal injuries and all. Two? Fuck you doing son?

we were getting at-best half a season out of Utley & Howard with no guarantee either would be able to contribute at all?

And we weren't a good hitting club *with* those guys.

Pat Gillick was the guy who stole guys like Werth, cleared out diminishing return guys like Abreu to make room for younger/cheaper/better options like Shane, fortified the bullpen without just tossing big money at name-closers, etc.

Ruben has accomplished absolutely nothing but sign guys we already had to big re-ups, plunder the farm-system for big-ticket items & ignore obvious holes (like say, our lineup since 2010).

But hasn't made the team all that much better. I wasn't cool with papelbon then and it looks worse now as the bridge to papelbon guys are shit and have blown too many games while cholly waits to use his big bucks closer.

The fact that they are listening to offers for cliff lee and hunter pence is scary. Dude should be on the hot seat. Not just for this year, but there are holes in the lineup and he's looking at a needing to replace the whole OF, 3rd base, bullpen, and back of the rotation on the cheap. And you're right all this guy has shown is the ability to give blank checks to big name guys.

The same way dudes were tripping off Hamels in 2009 they are doing off it Amaro. What he did keeping the infield together and assembling the start staff was phenomenal, acquiring Pence was big, too.

This season has been a lot of Murphy's law, shit breaks and bad middle relief, two best hitters and an ace injured, etc. This isn't a season that gets a GM fired. He will sink or swim based on next year.

He's the luckiest GM there is that he happened to have a title team fall into his lap during a run with the new park where the Phillies all the sudden were spending like the Yankees.

Nothing he's done ever has taken any real thought.

One move that took some actual foresight & Baseball Man skill in going on five years.

that's an easy way to discount getting both halladay and lee on the staff and for under-market contracts. doc took some heavy prospects, but i don't think pence did, that sort of goes in his favor also. people can bash the papelbon signing all they want, they clearly needed a closer and he got the best performer on the market.

i couldn't tell you accurately about the lower levels of their organization, their drafts, etc. they only have so many roster slots and they have tried to fill them with big names in their primes or slightly older and veterans off the bench.

that everyone already knew about with the team's open-checkbook and/or stuffed-coifers from a farm system Gillick helped grow back to flourishing levels (one now reported to have fallen off hard again under Ruben).

Meanwhile our pitching payroll for next season is 85 million & he hasn't found a single diamond-in-the-rough player, even overpaying for old bums like Ibanez.

Five years & the best you might say he's done is get guys like Halladay/Lee (who'd he already traded for garbage despite having two years on his deal) to sign for a debateable fraction less to come to a place where they were already comfortable & wanted to play.

Meanwhile we walked into this season with Jim Thome as our biggest offensive signing of the season & had to dump him once he proved what everybody already knew in that he can't play the field.

And for God's sake FUCK PAPELBON and defending that deal.

That was a shitty fucking contract competing against nobody taken on by a GM with no insight or imagination. I would dump his 50 million-dollar punchable face anywhere, tomorrow, for a used bat-bag full of pocket-rockets & flashlight key chains.

-Swept out the Brewers all by the same score and come back fashion.
-Phillies are 8-4 after the All-Star break.
-The trade deadline is coming up and Cole Hamels is safe in red pin stripes.

Notes for Ruben:
-Send Nix and Blanton off for a reliable reliever.
-After all the trouble you went thru to get Pence, keep him (it will send the wrong message if you ship him off again).
-With the emergence of Kratz, Schneider becomes expendable.
-Polanco is nearly done (hurt way too much) and Victorino looks distracted out there.
-Hopefully Cole's year and reward will remind Cliff Lee and Doc why they got the contracts they did. Otherwise one of them may have to go.

Victorino for a middling middle reliever and a rehabbing prospect. I guess I am glad he gets a chance to play meaningful beisbol. I also find it pretty funny that he's not only going to a team that left him unprotected twice, but also one whose fans have hated his fucking guts for about five seasons now.

compared with how dreadful things were just a month/few months ago. There was a stretch where we got close and it looked like we were turning a corner, only to fall much below .500. It seems like it's been an eternal chase to .500 this year.

Looking at the records, I'm thinking we have to go at least 14-6 in our last 20 to have a shot at the 2nd wild card spot. Even with that record, we'd still need StL and LA to play .500 ball. It's possible I guess...

a team it dumped two players on when they were sellers & the other team was buyers?

I will be dying if they pass the Dodgers.

And what's the best outcome for this Dodgers/Cards four-gamer coming up for us?

A split?

3 out of 4 taken by the Dodgers who currently trail St. Louis by one?

I can't believe I'm now legitimately scoreboard watching, I just sat through a damn Doyer/DBacks game.
