that's gonna be a great season bc Faber/Cruz have real problems w/each other but it's actually gonna be a good fight (as opposed to mayhem/bisping where it felt like a stunt & no one expected miller to put up a big fight).

2. "Great month of fights."
In response to Reply # 0

I've been ready for Jones/Machida. Another fight to boost the legend of Jon Jones.

Every major show looks strong this month. The entire UFC 140 card is strong from top to bottom. Gilbert Melendez, IMO, is the best 155llber out there, and this fight will probably set up a showdown with Frankie Edgar or Ben Henderson next year. Lesnar/Overeem won't last long, but it's going to be a war the entire time. Key fights on that card with Fitch/Hendricks and Diaz/Cerrone; both of which could establish #1 contenders.

And although I don't know much about the fights on the Dream card, I'm sure it's still going to be good, and I'll watch it strictly for nostalgic NYE megafight purposes.

I mean Overeem has had shitty cardio since he fought at 205.He has added the 40 lbs of muscle and gassed against Werdum. Werdum has some of the worst take downs ever. Brock is a fucking machine cardio and strength wise. Overeem is going to burn up that gas tank real quick fighting to stop Brock's take downs. I am going with Brock in the 2nd.

no injuries and the perfect schedule. His first fight was at the beginning of Feb. But that wasn't a title fight. But at that time he was on his the fast track to become the next big superstar. So it makes sense they would milk him as much as they could. I doubt they put him out for 4 fights next year though.

after he beats Lyoto his next fight has to be against Rashad (if he doesn't get caught up against Davis) but if Shad loses, I figure Hendo would get the title shot since he's the next highest ranked LH. then again I feel like Dana's gonna want Shogun/Hendo II as their next fight. If Davis beats Rashad does he get the next title shot (most likely in March)?

Bones has been lucky as far as not getting hurt (majorly) this year, but as UFC gets more mainstream attention they're gonna want to put Jones out in the forefront. He's young, well spoken & an exciting fighter.

I mean look at Anderson Silva he is the best fighter in the world and he is getting 3 fights per year. But he has been getting hurt so its been more like 2. With Jones they wanted to put him out there on his come up. As they were building him up they realized we have something special lets get the name out there. Now he is built up. He is known. Still not on Anderson Silva levels but the ball is in his court now. All of his fights while he holds the title will be on a HUGE stage. So its up to him now, he has to perform.

Spider's 36 though & combined with the injuries he can't fight more than 3 a year. I think with the new fox deal it's gonna be interesting to see when they get him on a Fox fight. i was thinking him vs rashad would be on but with rashad being on fox vs davis i wonder if they'd have him again.

Miguel Torres Released From UFC for Twitter Rape Joke

Photo by Jed Jacobsohn/Zuffa LLC/Zuffa LLC via Getty Images

Former WEC bantamweight champion and current UFC contender Miguel Torres has been released from the UFC following making a rape joke on Twitter. This is a very strong move on the UFC's part and, frankly, was quite unexpected. Given Forrest Griffin making a recent similarly ill advised joke about rape and Rashad Evans invoking the Penn State child rape scandal in fight promotion yesterday it almost seems like Torres was just the guy who took it far enough that the UFC could take action beyond Dana "having a talk" with the involved fighter.

The news came from a Dana White interview with Sports Illustrated:

SI.com: And what about Miguel Torres' tweet from yesterday?

White: This morning I'm on Landsburg's show, up here in Canada, and he hits me with the quote of what he tweeted. Now there's no explanation for that. There's absolutely nothing I could say to make any sense of that. And the fact that he even thinks that's funny or that's a joke, it disturbs me. It bothers me. Again, you're dealing with a guy that's a smart guy, that owns his own business, that's been one of the top fighters in the world forever. And I cut him today. He's no longer with the UFC.

SI.com: Was that announced today?

White: It's being announced right now to you. You're the only one that knows. Miguel Torres has been cut from the UFC and his career with us now is over.

Dana talked some to Ariel Helwani about the subject in a recent interview where he explained that the explanation Miguel gave just wasn't as solid as the one Forrest gave for his similarly tasteless joke. That response after the jump:

Torres was released over posting: "If a windowless van was called a surprise van, more pepole wouldn't mind going for rides in them. Everyone likes surprises."

Torres had said the quote was in reference to the TV show "It's Always Sunny in Phiiladelphia" where an episode took place in a van with tinted windows called a rape van.

White's quote about the statement was, "There's going too be times when things happen and mistakes are made. I cannot defend Miguel Torres. I cannot defend what he said. What he said makes no sense other than when he says, `It was a joke.' Well, I don't think that's a funny joke. I think it's disturbing."

not the smartest guy and a not funny, but still dont think its fair considering Rashad and Forest's comments.

Here’s the sequence of Tweets.

Starting on 04 December:

Miguel Angel Torres

@MiguelTorresMMA

Your mouth says no but my roofies say yes.

Miguel Angel Torres

@MiguelTorresMMA

99 no's and 1 yes is still a yes. #determination

Then, on 07 December, he wrote:

If a rape van was called a surprise van more women wouldn’t mind going for rides in them. Everyone likes surprises.

He caught some flak from his followers, so he quickly deleted that comment and posted:

Miguel Angel Torres

@MiguelTorresMMA

Too soon huh?

And then he rewrote and reposted the “rape van” tweet to say:

plus it wasn't just the one comment, he had a list going there.

honestly, after hearing the forrest explanation i don't think what he tweeted was bad, it was just out of context.

rashad? well, that was just stupid as hell. terrible joke. he thought he was being so clever too.

i mean, i really don't know what punishment would be appropriate, but firing torres was a bit much considering that dana didn't even talk to him personally like he did with forrest and rashad. nor did it sound like he got all the information before making the call. torres, being the worst offender of the three as well as the latest one was made an example of.

about the only way I see Rashad doing anything to Jones is perhaps scoring a takedown by countering one of Jones' spinning elbows and going for a shoot while Jones turns his back. I don't see Rashad scoring a takedown as a counter to Jones' kicks since he throws them so quickly and from a long distance.

with his standup striking. But with his reach advantage and ability to keep fighters out of their natural punching and kicking range, he might not even have to make major improvements to beat the top LHW foes.

imo he is overrated as hell. one of the biggest wastes of talent in the UFC. He has the skills to be one of the best fighters in the game. Speed, power, and athleticism. But he is to scared to throw hands with anyone with decent striking because he has no chin. For the better part of his career he has been a boring fighter. Except against scrubs. See Sean Salmon.

he can take a hard punch that'd be lights out for other fighters and get back up and basically be a zombie on his feet (see Machida and Rampage). he WAS waiting on Rampage the entire fight, but it was a great strategy that worked until he got rocked. with Machida, we've seen bad things happen when he tries to engage himself. but i agree, he's wildly overrated, his stand up is mediocre, and his "and 1" record has a couple of questionable decisions.

And he still does.

As I said on Twitter, Machida is a great fighter on paper, but he doesn't have a fighting spirit. Once he got gashed up, McCarthy might as well stopped the fight then because I knew Machida was about to be finished in short order. The guy will never win a war; once he realizes he can be hit, his confidence and will are completely gone. It happened both times vs. Shogun; it happened in the Jackson fight and it happened tonight.

So I knew while it'd take a while for Jones to catch him, once he caught him, he was done.

Rashad has the movement, the striking, the wrestling background, and the will to give Jones a run. He's also trained with Jones in the past, so he may be aware of some of his techniques. He might get lucky and really test Jones's chin.

I expect Evans to get finished too, but on paper Evans poses the biggest test to Jones.

all he ever does is throw looping hooks and high kicks. throwing hooks severely shortens your reach (he had the reach advantage against Machida and it looked the complete opposite) and it is the worst recipe for fighting someone who has a reach advantage. hard to see Rashad's stand up do anything but pray to land one of those strong hooks. in other words, i don't see it setting him up for his ground game.

that said, Rashad has a chance simply because of his wrestling ability. he's like a Bader-Rampage hybrid - he'll likely get pwned at stand-up and won't be able to utilize his ground gamed. imo, Machida (uses great angles and maximizes his reach) had the best chance against Bones at the stand up and he still didn't do much.

That's not anything new. It's only been in the last couple of years that we've seen the jab used effectively, and that's due to Silva and GSP. I'm not trying to say he's nowhere near the level of Jones or even Machida, but he's a decent striker.

Evans moves well, uses good head movement, changes levels well, and fights pretty safe. I doubt he'll be broken down as easy as Machida was, and I think he'll be able to defend Jones's strikes better than Jackson did. The problem is, I doubt Jones will respect Evans's striking as much as he did Jackson.

are straights - strikes that beat the opponent to the punch - his style negates reach. his hooks are mainly thrown out of the clinch, to counter and are thrown quick. it's how he was more effective than others that we've seen against Bones. if i recall correctly, Machida got caught when he tried to throw a hook after a faint jab - much like Rashad always does - we saw what happened after that.

all i'm saying is that it's difficult to see how Rashad's stand up can fare better than anyone we've seen so far unless there's something he knows from training with him. and for someone who fights safe, he was KTFO by Machida and very, very close to getting stopped by Rampage.

You can't teach heart. And the fact is, people knew if Machida ever got in trouble, he was gonna be done.

It's doubtful that Jones just easily ragdolls Evans like he did Machida and Shogun; nobody has ever done that to him. Machida's striking is better than Evans, but Evans's striking defense is better, his takedown defense is better, and his wrestling is better than Machida's. On paper, all Machida had is his out-of-range striking. That's it. Evans is a more well-rounded fighter, and has more heart than Machida ever had.

even less time to live. of course, it'd never happen in MMA 'cause there's no way a ref would allow someone to get choked out for 3 minutes, but imo an air choke would have me tapping much quicker than a blood choke - struggling for air vs. fading to black.

but I do think he has no idea how to face adversity. I mean up until his loss to Shogun who had given him trouble? He pretty much dominated every fight while taking minimal damage. He needs to learn to over come adversity. He needs to be learning from these fights. We'll see if he does.

Skills are obviously there, but size is a definite disadvantage when your opponent its skilled also. Honestly I'm really tired of all these talks about superfights. There's weight classes for a reason, just let the champs fight where they are and stop pressuring them to move up.

UFC has been giving people the fights they want when they wanted them. Unlike boxing where the best guy don't always fight each other and a lot of the time its long over due. So once you clean out a division like Silva and GSP they want to start seeing stupid super fights.

People act as if Jones was completely shook. Rogan was so caught up in the fact that Machida held his own in R1 that he completely overlooked the fact that Jones hunted him down in R2.

Only a four man tourney but still. The UFC's two top flyweights Demetrious Johnson and Joe Benavidez will be fighting Tachi Palace Fights' flyweight champion Ian "Uncle Creepy" McCall and Shooto 123 pound champion Yasuhiro Urushitani, respectively. The winners of those two bouts will fight and the winner of that will be the first ever UFC flyweight champion.

I assume he'll come hard with the leg kicks. I think Nate's a little bit quicker and will be able to land first with the pawing jabs, which will piss DOnald off and in turn throw him off his game. Nate by guillotine round 1

but my gut is saying cerrone wins in the end. plus i gotta support him because his striking coach is an old friend and training partner.

we know he gets brawl-y immediately when he gits hit and that is a mistake against a long, accurate puncher like nate. i remember him dropping his hands on his leg kicks., so i could see him coming out strong with those until nate finds his range and tags donald a few times throwing his game off. also, i think nate would hve the advantage on the ground, though cerrone is the better wrestler.

they split a couple months back. man, cerrone is on some bullshit sometimes. this actually isn't the first time they split and the last time cerrone begged my boy to take him back and train him again. i should just post the story up for you guys.

anyway, cerrone is still one of my favorites to watch. i think its his wrestling that will make the difference because i actually don't see nate hurting him on the feet, its mostly even there. on the ground cerrone knows enough to stay out of submissions and his wrestling will allow him to do that and/or get back to the feet.

I never thought to highly of him. After seeing him work his stand up in the gym. I thought even less. Saw him get worked in stand up every single time. My cousin sparred with him twice when I was there. Almost dropped him one time. Had him looking like a baby giraffe out there. During the stand up he looked like he was just going through the motions. During bjj he was beasting though. Its almost like he doesnt care bout the stand up and think he can become the best because he has great bjj.

If you were to just look at his record he seems like a decent enough fighter, but he doesn't pass the eye test. dude's BJJ is awesome but since his standup is so weak it doesn't make sense to even get to the ground with him (like Overeem II). he's beaten both Emelianenko's, Silva, Vera & Overeem which look good, but I don't see how he doesn't get KO'd against Nelson.

i dont think he has ever had a good fight in the UFC. I remember his fight against Arlovski and Gonzaga being HORRIBLE matches. Then I he beat Vera who is one of the biggest under achievers ever.

The other thing is his bjj is so good. But his wrestling is complete SHIT! Everyone knows bjj take downs aren't the best. If he mixed in some wrestling he would get take downs easier. Then his matches wouldnt look like two 8 year olds fighting on the play ground.

What was the ufc thinking? Why give overeem this fight first? If Brock loses they hurt one of their biggest stars. If reem loses in his first fight they hurt the chances of somebody that COULD be a huge star for them.

Ufc kinda loses either way.

Likeable guy, speaks well in interviews, exciting style. He should have gotten a mid level guy to introduce him. Like Silva did with Lebeen

Jackson/Evans, maybe?

UFC is in a down year due to injuries and other stuff. They can't hold off on superfights and give people tuneups. They have to strike while the iron is hot.

Why no takedown attempts?

His stance looked a bit better than his prior fights actually. When Overeem stuffed that initial sprawl so easily, that was all she wrote for Brock.

He just had surgery on his colon months ago; that disease ends the sports careers of regular athletes. And I don't believe Overeem really hit him flush with any of those kicks, particularly the one that put him away, so it's clear that he couldn't take body shots and Overeem knew it from the get-go.

Brock is under medical suspension until June 28th due to abdominal injury. Over six months. That's pretty remarkable any way you look at it. I'm guessing Brock knew how bad his ailment was before he stepped into the octagon. Gotta wonder how his doctors cleared him to fight if the ailment wasn't totally cleared up.

I dont know if Cain was injured at all during his last fight. So I dont know what his suspension is looking like. But Mir is ready to fight again. Mir just beat Big Nog and is moving up. Cain lost the title so he is moving down but still should get a top contender. Makes sense to me.

1) overeem looked much quicker tonight than i remember him being in previous fights. especially with his knees, he was firing those off very quick. if his cardio is good for a 5 round fight, he's gonna do well in the ufc.

2) i don't think brock trained with greg nelson for this fight. they had previously split, but i heard they had gotten back together. marty morgan is a good trainer, but he's a wrestling coach, not a guy with 30 years of experience in muay thai, filipino kali, and is a black belt in bjj under pedro sauer. PLUS a lifetime of wrestling.

if he didn't train with greg nelson then that was a big mistake. i need to ask my instructor what the deal was for this fight.

In response to Reply # 137

He made the right decision retiring. Sure he could still beat 90% of the people in the HW division. But his striking is just to far behind everyone else to compete with the elite heavy weights. Not only his striking but the way he reacts to getting hit. He always turns his body away and doesnt stay in the pocket. I know there are other wrestlers that have been able to use their wrestling to win while improving their striking. But none of them were heavy weights. Might be able to get away with it at the lower weight classes where everyone DOESN'T have one punch knock out power. Throw in his surgeries. Those seemed to really soften his midsection up. Maybe one of those knees to the body landed flush but every single one hurt him. Brock had a good run. Glad he bowed out when he did.

Who likes getting hit in the face dude? Especially if you're completely out of your league when it comes to hitting back?

He made a lot of money, made the UFC a lot of money, had a brief but amazing run and got out with his wealth AND health intact.

he is gonna have to jump in and out and pick Alistair apart. He has stamina to go 5. Alistair has always had questionable cardio. But yeah I agree with you. I can see the belt exchanging hands a couple more times.
