"Jamal Adams: Field is 'perfect place to die' -- fans cheer (ESPN swipe)"

The video on the other side of the link gives some context to Adams' content. I don't know which is crazier, Adams' comment or the crowd's reaction. SMH

Jamal Adams on CTE: Field is 'perfect place to die' -- fans cheer

Rich Cimini
ESPN Staff Writer

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- It was an awkward moment, compounded by an odd reaction from the audience.

The scene: Commissioner Roger Goodell conducted a fan forum Monday in the New York Jets' auditorium. He was flanked by players Matt Forte and Jamal Adams, and there were about 150 season-ticket holders in the room asking questions.

When the conversation turned to CTE and player safety, each man gave his thoughts. As a defensive player, Adams said he's "not a big fan" of rules that protect offensive players, but that he understands the league's emphasis on safety.

Then came the fingernails-across-the-blackboard moment.

"Literally, if I had the perfect place to die," Adams said, "I'd die on the field."

His comment prompted a smattering of applause from the fans in attendance, many of whom were decked out in Jets gear.

After the forum, Goodell tried to put Adams' remark in perspective.

"I think what he was really making the point of is how much he loved the game and how passionate he is about the game," Goodell told reporters. "It's just something that means a great deal to him. I get the emotion of that."

As for the fans' reaction?

"I think fans understood the emotion of what he was saying," Goodell said. "Which is: We love the game. I think they love the game. But I don't think anyone took it (literally)."

Goodell defended the league's efforts to improve player safety, adding that it hopes to improve helmets and pour more money into brain-trauma research. Forte, in his 10th season, said CTE is "definitely concerning," but he's encouraged by the improvements in equipment.

Adams made his "die" comment in the context of his affinity for the game.

"I can speak for a lot of guys that play the game," he said. "We live and breathe it. This is what we're so passionate about. Literally, if I had a perfect place to die, I would die on the field. And that's not a lie. There's so much sacrifice that we go through as a team, and just connecting as one and winning ball games. There's nothing like playing the game of football. But again, I'm all about making the game safer."

RE: many players are afraid to find out who they are w/o football

particularly from the South, have been bred to play the game since the earliest of their days. I've seen leagues where kids started playing tackle at the age of 5.

Everything these kids do is surrounded by football. Recently, I saw teams of young kids practicing in March. They are playing it year round in some parts. They, generally speaking, have no opportunity to learn and be exposed to anything else besides that pigskin.

Not Theisman, not McGahee, not Napoleon Kaufman, not the kid from Louisville. Dudes body bent in half... backwards. It makes me sick just thinking about it.

the kaep grumblings in baltimore are the worst, but seen plenty of out of pocket fans about things like the cte retirements and oher's situation.

then goodell is still fucking around and trying to play both sides with elliot.

But as someone who just played sports for fun or for exercise, I don't have a grasp of how football could be so important that it's as valued as life itself?

My interest is just to get a sense of how someone could come to Adams' conclusion.

i feel like the fans were cheering because they think hes saying he would give his life for his team. thats what they arent getting. he doesnt want to die for them.

i knew it was dangerous when i played, and if something tragic had happened and id died playing, i died doing something i loved. doesnt mean im willing to risk my life for the jersey i wore, even tho playing the game itself is a risk.

EDIT:. i also dont believe in an afterlife, and my time playing the game was right up there with what i would consider heaven on earth. ao theres that too.

As someone who hasn't experienced 'heaven on earth' as far as a hobby or pastime, I don't have a frame of reference for your experience.

But I appreciate that a connection to life on such a level of depth would at the very least give a sublime final memory of the potential for life as a human.

it was an exercise in trust, discipline, perserverence, joy, heartbreak, and a lot of other stuff i dont really have the words for.

i can see how even other people who played might think that sounds a little excessive, but if anything it really sells it short. i got SO lucky with my schools, coaches, and teammates. every ounce of both elation and pain that football gave me was a blessing, and there were metric tons of both.

And it's a bit understandable when you think about how much get puthe into the sport and how the point is to to be your best and make it to the big time.

Depending on what else this dude has going on his life family wise, this could be it for him right now, makes it even more understandable

-The Knicks’ coaching search still includes a lone frontrunner, Kurt Rambis, whose qualifications for the position include a strong relationship with Jackson and a willingness to take the job.

as an eagles fan, the number of fan bases i can look down are scant as fuck. jets fans are always there the same way baltimore was always there for us an even more fucked up mid-atlantic city.

i get what he is saying but it wasnt a very appropriate context to sy it in.

And you will know MY JACKET IS GOLD when I lay my vengeance upon thee.
