New York Magazine's kind of done this with Vulture, which has become an entity unto itself. ESPN has Grantland. Pitchfork just created The Dissolve for movies. Onion's AV Club is huge.
It's a better idea IMO because the absorbing of blogs hasn't worked well, especially for ESPN. TrueHoop went from a great blog to a gimmicky mess once ESPN got their hands on it.
The move I'm waiting for is ESPN (probably via Grantland) breaking out and creating their own Entertainment website. Not sure it'll be any good but it'll be an interesting venture.

He saying he wants to bring in black writers and cover sport pop culture the way Grantland has done for younger readers (i.e. white 25-40 year olds). Paper print is dead, there is a whole generation of kids, that will not know what it means to read the Sunday/Daily paper...
