I think he often gets overlooked, maybe a function of the era or something but he was great with his feet and when they went he showed how great he really was with his arm. Biletnikoff, Branch, Casper, wow, holy shit what a passing attack, especially since it had a ground game to open things up. Master of big comebacks, too, just a super fun player and that's from someone who hates the Raiders and Bama.

think. He was such a legendary player for the Raiders one would assume he put up big time numbers for a longer period of time, but he didn't. Even later when he QB'd the Oilers with Earl Campbell I would have assumed he had some really solid seasons but he really didn't.
the last 10 years of his career...which were the 10 years after the 1976 super bowl season ..he only threw more TDs than interceptions 2 times.

they had campbell and they had casper but not much else. he was also in physical decline. i often wonder had he not held out, what he would have done with the raiders that year they beat the birds in the super bowl. would plunkett have taken his job? if not, how far would he have taken them?

I can see how he wanted to bet paid because he has a solid year...threw for 3,600 plus yds...... but then on the Raiders side the year before that he threw 30 picks and only 16 TDs...
He was breaking down a bit...79 was like his last really solid year...
that 1980 super bowl for the Raiders....Plunkett was just so solid after he got his chance...not sure Stabler could have topped that at that point in his career...

you had stabler coming off a great year but with question marks and ultimately plunkett performed very, very well. but would he have even had that opportunity if stabler were still there? and if not, how well would stabler have fared? obviously it's just conjecture but it's one of those business decisions that could have affected things on the field and ultimately the outcome of the super bowl.

my very earliest memories of Football are when Ken Stabler was in his prime....76-77... always a clutch performer in big games.... a tough runner too....
Ken Stabler probably embodies the Raiders more than any single player really....
