Buzz Williams to VA Tech? Fuck me.

http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/10648381/buzz-williams-leave-marquette-golden-eagles-coach-virginia-tech-hokies

By Jeff Goodman | ESPN.com

Buzz Williams is leaving the Marquette Golden Eagles to sign a seven-year deal as the new coach of the Virginia Tech Hokies, multiple sources told ESPN.com on Friday.

The 41-year-old Williams has led the Golden Eagles to five NCAA tournament berths in six seasons since taking over for Tom Crean. He is 139-65 in his tenure at Marquette and went to the Elite Eight in 2013 and a pair of Sweet 16's in 2011 and 2012.

Williams replaces James Johnson -- who won 22 games in two seasons after being tabbed to replace Seth Greenberg. Johnson was fired earlier in the month by new athletic director Whit Babcock.

Comparing the programs themselves, though? It's kind of a joke. I just learned that VA Tech has only been to the NCAAs 8 times ever. Buzz has 5 by himself.

They fired one of his assistants for recruiting violations, and then their AD resigned.

He's escaping that situation and headed for greener pastures both conference and money wise.

... especially as I wouldn't be surprised if Travis Ford gets shitcanned.

I'm guessing he saw Rick Barnes is coming back and decided, "No more waiting, fuck this." Got into the conference with the best coach name recognition in the country one way or another.

But shit, Wake Forest has a better history than VA Tech if he wanted to go east. They would've offered someone like Buzz in a heartbeat. I'd be curious to read more stories about how Tech pulled this off.

His teams are difficult to play against, and I was not missing that in the least. Jamie Dixon's already in the fold, and now Buzz and Pitino are coming. I hate them all.

I think Buzz will do a good job there, but I agree that Wake would seem to be easier to win at than VT.

Blacksburg put their feelers out very early this season. They knew JJ wasn't going to come back unless some miracle happened. They also knew Buzz wasn't happy. They knew before the season even ended that Buzz was coming. Which would explain a few things: why he went there without seemingly considering other better programs, why it happened so incredibly quickly, and why Marquette looked so lackluster this year (despite all the youth, I still think with Buzz at the helm they should've been much better than they were).

is facing a new AD hire of someone he might not like, was edging towards a hot seat with another stinker of a year or two, and was tired of waiting for his plum texas job he so desperately wants.

MU blogs are really non-chalant about it. With the amount of money they're obviously willing to spend on a coach, they'll have their pick. right now, the big rumors are that Howland (uggh. terrible guy, but big name), and Gregg Marshall (wichita state) are interested, and there are a bunch of other big names. but MU has also had a lot of success getting relative unknowns (Crean and Buzz, for example) and succeeding. It'll be interesting to see which hire happens first--AD or coach--and what happens with the #19 recruiting class.

He can maintain dominance in the MVC and stay at the top of every coaching wish list until he gets the offer he wants. No reason to bail for Marquette, even with the better money-- more nationally recognized programs in bigger conferences will come knocking soon enough.

Howland isn't a bad idea, honestly. Things fell apart in Westwood quickly, but dude has a track record of success.

marquette has big money for basketball. buzz was making 2.8 million at marquette.

aside from buzz leaving, what better positions are there if Marshall wants to leave this summer? Is wake really better? the squad is in a much worse place right today. BC definitely isn't better. is there a big 12 team out there?

MU is a unique opportunity for a new coach. it's got talent coming back (Mayo), it's got a good set of recruits to try to salvage (many are local, so I doubt they'll follow Buzz), and a pretty legit 2015 commit already. It's far less rebuilding, and it's the definitive #1 part of the athletic program there.

In response to Reply # 19

He's obviously losing Early, but unless they win in all, he's still bringing back VanVleet, Baker, and Cotton-- and they have a lot of freshmen on this year's roster who will gained experience. They have at least another year or two of elite level mid-major ball left.

Just like Shaka Smart is still near the top of everyone's desired coaches list despite their Final Four run being a few years ago, Marshall can afford to wait. It's not like his whole team is graduating and the cupboard will be bare.

I suspect there will be better offers from bigger name programs in better conferences in the next few years, if he waits.

one can afford to wait, but one might not want to wait. being a hot item coach from a mid major doesn't last long if you can't keep outperforming your conference's rank.

and how many big name schools will have openings in a given year? in two given years? in 3?

i'm not saying marshall is likely to go to marquette, but it's not a ridiculous idea that should get thrown out immediately like you seem to be doing.

The last five years, he's only ever finished second to Creighton, who is now gone. They'll be atop the MVC for the foreseeable future. At least for the next few years, which is all he really needs.

I mean, Shaka hasn't been past the second round since his deep run. He's still atop every list. Even if they never sniff the success of last year and this year, Marshall will still be right near the top until he leaves.

Plenty of good programs with coaches nearing 70. Plenty of big name programs unhappy with their present coaches (I bet if Hoosier fans had a choice, they'd trade in Crean for a second... and with Vonleh leaving, not sure next year they're a lock to be tourney-bound). Marshall can afford to wait.

but if the MVC, as a conference, fades and he can't get high seeds for his squad (VCU might not go deep, but they're routinely high seeds in the NCAA), his star might lose its luster.

90+% likelihood this is what happens.

don't deny he can afford. but it's not so cut and dry that there are better programs with openings coming soon. Which good programs with an old coach are you thinking? And does it not have an in-house candidate?

I'll count Indiana (but, if crean does well next season, it's suddenly not an option).

Howland is already being tossed out there in a big way for the Wake gig.

Wouldn't be surprised to see two more "splashy hires" in the ACC this offseason. This conference is going to be monstrous in a couple of years. (It's also going to put that much more pressure on Duke and Syracuse to find a guy who can hang with the caliber of coaching and recruiting as the others in the ACC.)

So apparently Howland's asking price was too much.

If that's the case, either (a) Howland is insane, or (b) Smart isn't asking enough.

Indiana will be open maybe as soon as after next season.
Texas will be open sooner rather than later.
Distinct possibility that Georgetown's job may be open in the next couple of years.
Duke, Wisconsin, and Syracuse will all likely be open within the next five years. They well may keep it in house... but with no obvious front-runners for those positions, who knows?

VCU keeps bumping his pay up to get him to stay, and he keeps turning down marquee jobs, which keeps programs foaming at the mouth in terms of what they should offer to get him. It's such a win-win for him.

Smart may just also be the type of dude who prefers to be a god on a smaller campus than to feel the pressures of a big program.

Both Phillips at NDSU and your man at Milwaukee have done good work. If Bennett turns them down for whatever reason (presumably a sizable contract raise from UVA would be chief among them), it's not like there aren't other disciples who are proven winners.

Bo could be a better recruiter if he put more effort into it, which he's doing now, but Jeter would be a huge downgrade. If not someone like Philips or a current staff member, if not Bennett then someone outside UW they'd go after. Wouldn't necessarily be on the Bo coaching tree.

Not really familiar with NDSU's recruiting either, but I've seen them play a number of times the past couple years and always liked what I'd seen.

The MU people doing the hiring were in touch with Shaka, made their offer, he said he'd do it, but nothing official. This news made it back to the higher-ups at MU, trickled down, and everyone got excited. Then...nothing happened.

Jim Ganzer, who was the first guy saying "done deal," is really well-connected with the basketball program and recruiting circles. He's usually conservative in his predictions, and hasn't been wrong or misleading before, so his tweets were what helped set this off. The problem is that this is apparently just how Shaka negotiates (he's done it with UCLA and Minnesota).

It's maybe not necessarily over, but I'm not optimistic about it. I can say that Howland is basically out of the picture.

I'm sure it's common in those circles, but damn. The only way I could conceive of filling that much space is if I'm allowed to include my accomplishments from Tecmo Super Bowl and FIFA.

Apparently they moved up this announcement by a few weeks so that whoever the new coach is knows who he's working for. Hopefully a sign that it's not Wardle, since he's probably willing to work at MU regardless of the bosses.

In response to Reply # 0

http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/10675532/south-florida-bulls-kill-coaching-deal-steve-masiello-lying-resume

Manhattan coach Steve Masiello never graduated from the University of Kentucky, as indicated on his resume, and his falsifying this information eliminated him from getting the University of South Florida job, multiple sources told ESPN.com on Wednesday.

On the Manhattan and Louisville official websites -- Masiello was an assistant at Louisville from 2005-11 before becoming head coach at Manhattan in 2011 -- it indicated he was a 2000 graduate of Kentucky with a degree in communications.

However, Masiello did not graduate from Kentucky, UK spokeswoman Ashley Caressen told ESPN. Masiello attended UK from the fall of 1996 to the summer of 2000 but never earned his degree, Caressen said.

Caressen said Masiello contacted the UK's registrar office on Tuesday, but she said his conversation with the registrar's office "was confidential."

Louisville athletic director Tom Jurich told ESPN.com that he was unaware that Masiello had not graduated from Kentucky.

"I knew (Coach) Rick (Pitino) was comfortable with him," Jurich said. "He played for Rick and Rick knew all about his background."

Said Pitino to ESPN.com's Jeff Goodman: "If it's accurate, I'm shocked by it. I had no idea. I left the previous year and he was on track to graduate."

Jason Charney, Masiello's agent, declined comment Wednesday. Numerous attempts to reach Masiello have been unsuccessful.

Tuesday morning, ESPN's Jeff Goodman reported Masiello had been offered and verbally accepted a five-year deal worth more than $1 million a year to become USF's coach. However, late Tuesday night, The Tampa Tribune reported USF was forced to kill the deal with Masiello because of a previously undetected background check.

The newspaper reported the contract was believed to be worth more than $1 million per season.

It isn't clear whether Masiello is eligible to return to Manhattan in the wake of the deal falling through.

Masiello and Manhattan were coming off a close loss to defending national champion Louisville and Pitino in the second round of the NCAA tournament.

Masiello, who had a 60-39 record in three seasons at Manhattan, played at Kentucky and had been an assistant to Pitino at Louisville.

Obviously embellishing the resume is not ideal for a high-profile job, but dude is being hired to teach basketball and lead a winning program, not be a professor. Dude knows basketball and has proven it in real life.

It'll be interesting to hear what Masiello says was the reason why he left.

Did Manhattan not do this when they hired him?

http://espn.go.com/new-york/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/10678756/manhattan-places-coach-steve-masiello-leave-degree-status-reviewed

NEW YORK -- Manhattan College has placed men's basketball coach Steve Masiello on leave while he reviews his degree status at the University of Kentucky, the school announced late Wednesday.

Masiello had reached an agreement in principle to become the new coach at the University of South Florida, but that agreement was then terminated.

"The agreement was pending a verification of credentials," South Florida said in a statement. "Through the verification process it was determined the candidate's credentials could not be substantiated and therefore he did not meet the requirements for the position."

"As a result of a background check commissioned by the University of South Florida, Manhattan College has learned there is a question of the validity of head men's basketball coach Steve Masiello's undergraduate degree from the University of Kentucky," reads a statement from Manhattan. "Masiello is currently in the process of reviewing his degree status with the University of Kentucky. Manhattan College has placed Masiello on leave while he completes this process with the university."

A University of Kentucky spokeswoman confirmed to ESPN that Masiello did not graduate from Kentucky.

"Manhattan College will issue further comment as soon as this expedited process is complete," the statement concludes.

Masiello, who played at Kentucky and was an assistant to Rick Pitino at Louisville, led the Jaspers to the NCAA tournament this season and a near-upset of the Cardinals in the second round last week.

At least that's the card it seems like he'll be playing. And a few sports journalists are already talking to college ADs and administrators who say this "mistaken graduation" happens more often than one would think.

It's definitely going to continue to be interesting for a couple more days.

67. "Kentucky assistant, Orlando Antigua, accepts USF basketball job"
In response to Reply # 0

http://www.tampabay.com/sports/basketball/college/report-kentucky-assistant-accepts-usf-basketball-job/2172752

Kentucky assistant Orlando Antigua, widely considered the behind-the-scenes catalyst of the Wildcats' astounding run of recent recruiting success, will be formally introduced as USF's ninth men's basketball coach Tuesday.

The school confirmed the hiring Monday afternoon. Antigua replaces Stan Heath, dismissed March 14 after compiling a 97-130 record in seven seasons.

Terms of his contract weren't immediately released, but ESPN reported he received a five-year deal. He'll remain with the Wildcats through the end of their current Final Four run before starting his new job.

"I said from the beginning of this search, we were looking for a great leader, a great communicator, a proven record of being able to recruit and develop players, and someone who will represent USF with exceptional energy and integrity," new USF athletic director Mark Harlan said in a statement released by the school.

"We have found all of that and more in Orlando Antigua."

A native of the Dominican Republic and former rangy sharpshooter at Pitt, Antigua was believed to be a favorite of the Texas-based private search firm hired by USF.

He has spent the past five seasons on John Calipari's staff at UK following a year with Calipari at Memphis. Last summer, he was promoted to head coach of the Dominican Republic national team.

"I have been preparing for the challenge of leading a program my entire life and I have a deep belief and passion that USF basketball can thrive and is ideally positioned in a community as rich and diverse as the Tampa Bay area," Antigua said in the news release.

"I look forward to renewing my strong connections in the state of Florida and can't wait to begin working towards our future success."

A bilingual married father of two, Antigua became the first Latin-American to play for the Harlem Globetrotters -- who nicknamed him "Hurricane" -- when he joined the iconic team after college.

That's hardly the most unique part of his backstory. The oldest of three brothers reared in the Bronx, Antigua has been credited with helping keep his family intact during a stretch of homelessness.

On Halloween 1988, he was shot in the head near his left eye, but was playing basketball two weeks later and played three seasons at Pitt with the slug in his head. In 1994, he was named the United States Basketball Writers Association's Most Courageous Athlete.

As a coach, he spent five years at his alma mater before joining Calipari at Memphis in 2008. While at UK, he has helped Calipari land five consecutive signing classes ranked No. 1 by at least one major scouting service or news organization.

He has a bachelor's degree in social sciences from Pitt, according to USF.

His arrival caps a bizarre -- and occasionally botched -- search for Heath's replacement. USF confirmed it reached an agreement in principle with Manhattan's Steve Masiello early last week, but broke things off when the search firm discovered inaccuracies on Masiello's resume.

On Friday, UNLV coach Dave Rice reportedly was offered the job after meeting in Tampa with Harlan, but reached an agreement on a contract extension with UNLV the following day.

Some people on the internet say Cuonzo's buyout gets cut in half from $2.6mm to $1.3mm tomorrow, so it would make sense for MU to hold off on the hire until after that occurs. Some other people on the internet say Wojo interviewed with Marquette today.

I'd be fine with either.

With Amaker, Dawk, and Collins all finding relative success this year, just waiting around and expecting the job out of sheer loyalty ain't enough. Marquette would be a hell of a program, with some terrific young talent to start building with.

http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/10707907/cuonzo-martin-tennessee-volunteers-removes-self-marquette-golden-eagles-coaching-search

Tennessee coach Cuonzo Martin has taken his name out of the running for the Marquette job, sources told ESPN.com.

Martin talked with Vols officials Monday, sources at Tennessee told ESPN.com, with the coach and athletic director Dave Hart meeting Monday night.

Martin had met Sunday with Marquette officials, and there was significant interest from the Golden Eagles in hiring him away from the Vols, multiple sources told ESPN.com.

Marquette is pursuing a replacement for Buzz Williams, who left after six seasons to take over as coach at Virginia Tech.

Martin's buyout with the Vols is set to decrease from $2.6 million to $1.3 million on April 1, according to a source.

Martin led Tennessee to a 24-13 record this season, 11-7 in the SEC. The Vols lost to Michigan in the Sweet 16 on Friday in Indianapolis after beating Iowa in the First Four in Dayton and then UMass and Mercer in the rounds of 64 and 32, respectively, in Raleigh last week.

Martin, who took the Vols to the NIT in his first two seasons in Knoxville after replacing Bruce Pearl, played at Purdue and was a head coach at Missouri State before landing at Tennessee.

Marquette interim athletic director Bill Cords is conducting the search for the Golden Eagles.

Former UCLA coach Ben Howland and current Duke assistant Steve Wojciechowski have also been considered for the job, sources have told ESPN.com.

And the jokes about K as his halftime interview guy and the Polish food in Milwaukee-- both money.

http://www.cbssports.com/collegebasketball/eye-on-college-basketball/24509364/former-oregon-coach-ernie-kent-hired-at-washington-state

Ernie Kent will be the next head coach at Washington State, the school has announced.

Kent is most known for his time at Oregon, where he spent 13 seasons. He made five NCAA Tournaments, including two Elite Eight runs in 2002 and 2007. The 59-year-old parted ways with the Ducks following a 16-16 campaign in 2009-10.

Kent started his coaching career at Saint Mary's. He has a 325-254 career record.

"I'm looking forward to providing the kind of passion and leadership to help potential student-athletes understand how special WSU is," Kent said in a statement. "Getting back into coaching for me has meant finding the right program that matches up with my passion, my vision, my beliefs and my commitment; and I feel Washington State University fits all that criteria for me. Bill Moos has a vision and has created enormous energy around Cougar Athletics and I want to be a part of that. Now is the time."

Washington State fired Ken Bone earlier this month after a 3-15 Pac-12 mark and a 10-21 overall record. Bone, 55, spent five years in Pullman but was unable to reach an NCAA Tournament in his tenure.

Last year, weren't they crazy young in addition to him being new? They got significantly better this year too.

Plus, Wake stuck by Bzdelik, a guy who was awful at Colorado for three years, giving him four terrible years at Wake. I don't think they can do worse than their last hire.

80. "I think his role as a recruiter at Kansas would play more into it"
In response to Reply # 78

Not that I know how central he was to Self's recruiting, but he's an okay coach. He came to Tulsa with this idea of having a similarly uptempo, 15 second play-clock style of offense that he quickly had to abandon when he realized they didn't have and don't get those style of players any more. They had one decent half season by grinding teams on defense. I don't know what that says about his coaching ability in the ACC, but if Self gives him high marks as a recruiter, that could be enough to give this story some credence. It would be a weird second choice if they really are putting all their hopes on Shaka.

http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/10726791/wake-forest-agrees-tulsa-danny-manning

Wake Forest has agreed to a deal with Tulsa coach Danny Manning, sources close to the situation told ESPN.com.

Manning, who has spent the past two seasons with the Golden Hurricane, visited the campus Wednesday after meeting with athletic director Ron Wellman earlier in the week in Indianapolis.

Manning replaces Jeff Bzdelik, who was forced to resign earlier in the month after four forgettable seasons. Bzdelik was 51-76 overall and 17-51 in ACC play.

Manning, 47, was the No. 1 overall pick of the 1988 NBA draft. He played 15 seasons in the league, and then joined Bill Self's staff at Kansas -- where he was an assistant from 2006-12.

Manning was hired by Tulsa in 2012 and led the Golden Hurricane to a 17-16 mark and an appearance in the CBI despite having his top two players, Jordan Clarkson and Eric McClellan, transfer.

Tulsa finished 21-13 this season and tied for first in C-USA with a 13-3 mark. The Golden Hurricanes lost to UCLA in the second round of the NCAA tournament.

Manning attended high school in North Carolina.

In response to Reply # 0

http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/10716634/kelvin-sampson-coach-houston-cougars

The University of Houston has hired current NBA assistant and former college coach Kelvin Sampson, sources told ESPN.

Sampson, a current assistant with Houston of the NBA, will take over as Cougars coach following the Rockets' game at the Toronto Raptors on Wednesday night.

Sampson, 58, previously had been a Division 1 college head coach at three stops -- Washington State, Oklahoma and Indiana. He took Washington State to the NCAA tournament in 1994, then went to 11 NCAA tournaments in 12 seasons at Oklahoma (including a Final Four in 2002) and was at Indiana for two seasons before being fired.

Sampson was let go by the Hoosiers and hit with a five-year show cause by the NCAA after being caught making impermissible phone calls.

He has since worked as an assistant in the NBA with the Milwaukee Bucks and the Rockets. Sampson also has been involved with NBA head-coaching vacancies.

Sampson replaces James Dickey, who resigned late last month due to "private family matters." Dickey had a 64-62 record in four seasons at Houston, including a 20-13 mark in 2012-13. The Cougars were 17-16 this season.

95. "And now TU's possible replacement list includes...Doug Gottleib"
In response to Reply # 0

not sure about his coaching chops, but...

This is the compiled list from the Tulsa World. Some other things that jump out is all the former TU players during various phases of the successful coaches run in the late 80s and 90s. And that I actually used to watch these guys play, which makes me feel old as hell.

* Brett Ballard: Age 33. Manning’s top assistant at TU. Ballard formerly was the head coach at Baker University, which competes at the NAIA level.
* Lou Dawkins: Age 43. A former Golden Hurricane guard, Dawkins connected on the 3-point shot that stunned Oklahoma State in the 1994 NCAA Tournament. Since winning two state championships as a high school coach in his home state of Michigan, Dawkins has for three seasons been an assistant at Northern Illinois.
* Joe Dooley: Age 48. Recently completed his first season as the Florida Gulf Coast head coach, recording 22 victories before an NIT first-round loss to Florida State. He was East Carolina’s head coach for four seasons during the ‘90s and was a Bill Self assistant at Kansas for 10 years.
* Doug Gottlieb: Age 38. The former Oklahoma State point guard was an ESPN Radio host, did ESPN college basketball analysis and now does studio and game work for CBS. He has no coaching experience, but two years ago he expressed interest in becoming Kansas State’s head coach. It is believed that Gottlieb inquired about the TU job two years ago, and he might be intrigued again.
* Barry Hinson: Age 52. A Marlow native who now is the head coach at Southern Illinois. Hinson formerly was the head coach at Bishop Kelley in Tulsa, at Oral Roberts and at Missouri State.
* Bob Hoffman: Age 56. An Oklahoma City native and currently the head coach at Mercer University in Macon, Ga. Hoffman recently attracted national attention when he and Mercer stunned Duke in an NCAA Tournament game. Hoffman formerly was the Oklahoma Baptist University head coach and an Oklahoma assistant.
* Norm Roberts: Age 48. A former St. John’s head coach and a Bill Self assistant at Oral Roberts, Tulsa, Illinois and Kansas.
* Donnie Tyndall: Age 43. In three seasons as the Southern Miss head coach, Tyndall has led the Golden Eagles to combined records of 85-23 overall and 38-10 in Conference USA play.
* Brad Underwood: Age 49. In his first season as the Stephen F. Austin head coach, Underwood and the Lumberbacks achieved a 29-game win streak that included an NCAA Tournament conquest of Virginia Commonwealth. Underwood played at Kansas State and was a Frank Martin assistant both at K-State and South Carolina.
* Michael White: Age 37. Considered a rising star. In three seasons as Louisiana Tech’s head coach, White has a record of 74-31. For seven seasons, he was an assistant at Ole Miss.
* Pooh Williamson: Age 40. A Beggs native and the point guard for Tubby Smith-coached Tulsa teams that in 1994 and 1995 surged to the NCAA Sweet Sixteen. Williamson was the Hurricane’s interim head coach during the 2004-05 season. He since has been an assistant at Wichita State, Texas A&M and TCU, and he currently is a member of Smith’s staff at Texas Tech.

http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketball/story/_/id/10797288/frank-haith-missouri-tigers-deal-coach-tulsa-golden-hurricane-per-sources

Missouri coach Frank Haith is in final negotiations to accept the Tulsa head-coaching job, a source close to the situation told ESPN.com on Thursday.

Barring a last-minute collapse in negotiations, Haith will replace Danny Manning, who left for Wake Forest earlier this month.

A surprise hire by Missouri out of Miami three years ago, Haith has led the Tigers to the NCAA tournament in two of his three seasons and has a 76-28 record at Missouri.

The Tigers went to the NIT this past season and will lose Jordan Clarkson, Jabari Brown and Earnest Ross.

Haith is basically making a new team each season consisting of a hosh posh of underachieving freshman and castaway transfers. I don't know much at all about Tulsa, but maybe he's sees the end is near for him in Columbia and wants to make a move while he's still wanted somewhere.
