Whoa. Can't wait to see how this plays out.

Sam's interview on ESPN was awesome. Seems like a class act who's gone through a hell of a lot in his life, ready to face whatever trials this may bring.

How will news that Michael Sam is gay affect NFL draft his stock?

Read More: http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/college-football/news/20140209/michael-sam-draft-stock/#ixzz2sscXxIgd

The news that former Missouri defensive end Michael Sam is gay holds significant social and cultural ramifications. But from a pure football perspective, his decision to come out prior to the NFL Draft in May will make his path to the league daunting, eight NFL executives and coaches told SI.com.
In blunt terms, they project a significant drop in Sam's draft stock, a publicity circus and an NFL locker room culture not prepared to deal with an openly gay player. Sam, the SEC Defensive Player of the Year, was projected as a mid-to-late round draft pick prior to his announcement.
While none of the executives overtly condemned Sam's decision, their opinions illuminated an NFL culture where an openly gay player -- from the draft room to the locker room -- faces long odds and a lonely path.
The executives and coaches were granted anonymity by SI.com for their honesty and their answers were consistently unsparing.
"I don't think football is ready for it just yet," said an NFL player personnel assistant. "In the coming decade or two, it's going to be acceptable, but at this point in time it's still a man's man game. To call somebody a is still so commonplace. It'd chemically imbalance an NFL locker room and meeting room."
All the NFL personnel interviewed agreed that Sam's announcement will cause him to drop in the draft; he was projected between the third and seventh round prior to the announcement. The question will be how far he falls and if he gets chosen at all.
"I just know with this going on this is going to drop him down," said a veteran NFL scout. "There's no question about it. It's human nature. Do you want to be the team to quote-unquote 'break that barrier?'"
Before his announcement, Sam had already emerged as a divisive prospect. Some look at his SEC-best 11.5 sacks and 19 tackles for loss and see a high motor pass rusher who could have gone as high as the third round. Others see Sam, who is 6-foot-2 and 260 pounds, as undersized defensive end without a true position in the NFL. Of his 11.5 sacks, nine came in three games against what one scout called "garbage competition" -- Vanderbilt, Arkansas State and Florida. "His numbers are inflated," a scout said. "You've got to see through that."
One former NFL general manager described how Sam's future could play out in the draft room. He said when a team is getting in position to make a pick, there's typically a declaration in the draft room that they're nine slots from choosing and will pick from six different players, or five spots away and choose from three players.
If Sam is among that group of players, the potential distraction of his presence -- both in the media and the locker room -- could prevent him from being selected.
"That will break a tie against that player," he said. "Every time. Unless he's Superman. Why? Not that they're against gay people. It's more that some players are going to look at you upside down. Every Tom, Dick and Harry in the media is going to show up, from Good Housekeeping to the Today Show. A general manager is going to ask, 'Why are we going to do that to ourselves?'"
The former general manager said that it would take an NFL franchise with a strong owner, savvy general manager and veteran coach to make it work. He rattled off franchises like Pittsburgh, Green Bay, San Francisco, Baltimore and Indianapolis as destinations where that could happen. He said that a team with a rookie head coach would not be an ideal destination. "This plays better in Green Bay," he said, "that it does in New York."
Sam's announcement did not come as a surprise to most NFL teams. Sam's sexual orientation was considered an open secret in his college town of Columbia, Mo., and the assistant personnel man said he believed "90-percent of teams" had already known about that Sam was gay and had dropped him on their draft boards. He estimated that of the 32 NFL franchises, only two or three didn't know prior the news. He projected that it will impact Sam's draft status "quite a bit."
"You're going to have to have one confident general manager or head coach that is certainly entrenched in his position and established to draft a player like that," the assistant personnel director said. "It's one thing to have Chris Kluwe or Brendon Ayanbadejo, advocates for gay rights, on your team. It's another to have a current confirmed player."
Multiple NFL executives questioned the decision to come out now, as Sam will be the biggest story in football between now and the NFL Draft on May 8. The NFL combine from Feb. 22-25 will be a four-day referendum on Sam's professional future. And his place in the NFL Draft will be endlessly debated between now and May.
An NFL assistant coach called Sam's decision "not a smart move," as he said it "legitimately affects your potential earnings." It wasn't lost on the NFL executives that former NBA player Jason Collins, who came out last April in a Sports Illustrated story, hasn't been signed by an NBA team this year.
"You shouldn't have to live your life in secrecy," the assistant coach said, "but do you really want to be the top of the conversation for everything without ever having played a down in this league?"
The assistant coach said that the decision to draft Sam will ultimately rest on the desire of a franchise to risk disrupting the dynamic of the locker room.
"There are guys in locker rooms that maturity-wise cannot handle it or deal with the thought of that," the assistant coach said. "There's nothing more sensitive than the heartbeat of the locker room. If you knowingly bring someone in there with that sexual orientation, how are the other guys going to deal with it? It's going to be a big distraction. That's the reality. It shouldn't be, but it will be."

is a different story... like mentioned above though, that just gives the right organization an opportunity for a "steal" and the fact it could slide him in the draft shouldnt really hurt his money because I'm assuming, if he chooses to, he can cake off this situation

His advisors counseled him well. Opening up about his sexuality increases his chances that prospective teams will have the structure (support of ownership, willingness of teammates to accept him and the struggles he will have as an openly gay athlete, and a tolerant fan base) in place to ensure he'll have the best chance to grow as an NFL player.

Being open about his sexuality shows character and integrity. Those qualities will help him endure the personal attacks that will come his way, and also help him develop as an athlete throughout his career.

look at Teo's situation and how quickly that died

you can only focus on a story for so long

the first rookie mini camp, the first game... ok, but after that?
how many questions can you ask? as long as his teammates don't say anything
negative publicly, then there's no distraction, right?

even if its just anonymously, something is gonna come about about dudes not being comfortable with him in the locker room.

a lot of it will come down to if the team is winning or not. a losing team is gonna have a much harder time distracting the press from this story.

there is a significant difference between media coverage in Columbia and coverage in most if not all NFL markets.

its not a stretch to argue that the NFL generally is more homophobic that the average college campus. Someone will speak out against it.

He intentionally withheld public confirmation of his orientation in order for the story to not be a distraction during the season. He obviously thought the story might cause a problem.

>it was fine in Columbia, MO. the heartland of america. the

Now that the story is out, people WILL act behind the times. They shouldn't but they will.

Do you believe that given how homophobic the NFL actually is (regardless of whether it should be) that someone wont speak out?

Or that the national media, bloggers, and beat reporters won't do a more thorough job (if only for the webhits) of finding some guys in the locker room who will complain?

but the knock on him (that I heard, at least) is that he had a tendency to disappear during games at times. Some even think his teammate and bookend, Kony Ealy is a better all-around talent. I've seen him as high as mid first round in some mocks.

he could become the first openly gay player if he makes a 53-man roster,
but if a current player just came out before Sam even gets on,

But it has been noted before that there are openly gay players playing, they just haven't come out to the media about it. What happened to those players coming out?

he had a great year but wasn't even considered to be an NFL prospect prior to this season, unless he wows people at the combine he'll probably be a late round pick anyway. He had an uneven performance at the senior bowl, he looked good at times as a pass rusher but struggled when he tried to play as a stand-up LB which most people think he'll have to do in the NFL.

I don't see how coming out now is going to help his draft prospects but it could hurt him. Some teams are going to pass on him not necessarily because he's gay, but because they don't want to deal with the media circus and distraction for what's probably going to be a late round draft pick that may or may not make your team.

Maybe he's just trying get his name out there to set himself up for life after football. Maybe he figured it would come out at some point anyway once teams start doing background checks and things and he wanted to get a jump on it and control the narrative.

Apparently it was already known by his teammates and around Columbia and nobody really cared. Hopefully it will ultimately be a non-story for him in the NFL and he can just play football. It will be interesting to see how it works out now that the whole world knows, including his opponents. We saw with the Martin/Incognito situation that quite a bit of neanderthalism still exits in the trenches. When an o-lineman takes a shot at Sam's knees will it be because he's a great pass rusher or because he's gay? I guess time will tell...

that knows he's gay and is fine with it, even it costs him a round in the draft. Its a smart move imo.

I've heard some people say he did it to IMPROVE his draft status, just like some folks thought Jason Collins did it to entice an nba team to sign him or to get into the lucrative gay athlete talk circuit lol.

Coming out is definitely more risk than reward for these dudes but I think they're doing it for their own internal peace.

This truly should be a non-story but somebody's gotta be the guinea pig before folks can truly get over it.

really try to hide it, before this season he wasn't considered to be an NFL prospect so nobody outside of Columbia really cared. Obviously his star rose this year and he started getting national attention so when NFL people started poking around it was going to come out anyway so I'm guessing he just wanted to get out in front of it B-Rabbit style.

45. ""Distractions" are Bullshit (swipe)"
In response to Reply # 29

http://deadspin.com/distractions-are-bullshit-1495443299

So Chris Kluwe blew up the Internet last week with this post, entitled "I Was An NFL Player Until I Was Fired By Two Cowards And A Bigot," and the sports world instantly split into two factions: Those who cheered on Kluwe, and those who thought he was a disgruntled ex-punter looking for revenge and working in cahoots with BIG GAY. Whether you believe that Kluwe was canned for his politics, or because he was a statistically average punter who could be replaced with cheaper labor (as Kluwe points out, it's possible for both cases to be true—that his politics made it easier for the Vikings to make a justifiable football decision), I think we can all agree that football teams—as well as many football coaches, fans, and media members—do NOT care for "distractions." Even Kluwe himself didn't want to be seen in that light.

"I still have friends on the Vikings, and opening up something like this during the season would not help them focus on their jobs."

"Distractions" has been a catchall term in football for years and years, and it remains both pervasive and utterly meaningless. "Those distractions are getting old for me," Kluwe's special-teams coordinator, Mike "Nuke the Gays" Priefer, told reporters in 2012, referring to the punter's "Vote Ray Guy" protest. "The punter can't be a distraction," writes this guy. Anything involving a football figure that isn't strictly about football is a potential distraction. Gay NFL player coming out? "Distraction," Mike Florio worries. Rex Ryan's foot fetish? "Could snowball into a distraction," a reporter suggests. Richie Incognito? "A distraction for the Dolphins," Ed Werder says. (Miami went on to win four of its next six.) Tebow? "Distraction," everyone says.

It's a useful word, for coaches and reporters alike. It betrays no values, no bias. A distraction is just a thing you can point to in the corner of the room. (It's particularly funny when journalists talk about distractions. They're the instruments of distraction, after all. It's like a fart asking, "How will you deal with the smell?"). No one needs to address the substance of the thing doing the distracting, only the possibility that, for three or four minutes during the week, the thing might dare interfere with FOOTBALL. Football teams do not like it when players bring so-called distractions up, and they do not like it when the media dare to ask non-footbally, distraction-y questions at a press conference. ("Hey Coach, did you know Aaron Hernandez liked killin' folk?") Football must stay focused on football at all times, or else the whole world blows up or something.

All the neurotic talk about "distractions" reveals a funny thing about the locker room. It's as if the psyche of a football team is some impossibly delicate thing that cracks the second the outside world sneaks in. Football purports to be the manliest sport in the universe, and yet—on a social level—it operates like a fucking country club. We do not bring up "unpleasantries" in football. That would be rude!

You will see this in full effect tonight during the national title game. How many times do you think the word "rape" will be uttered during the game broadcast tonight? Zero? Negative two? I bet ESPN handed out a little flyer to personnel that said OH GOD PLEASE DON'T SAY RAPE ON THE AIR. That way, the audience doesn't have to think about how strange it is that Florida State is on the verge of winning a national title despite maybe-possibly-allegedly-depends-on-whom-you-believe having a rapist at the helm. I don't know that Jameis Winston raped that woman, and it's not fair to brand him as a criminal, but I assure you: It will be fucking weird when the entire episode is boiled down to "off-field issues" by Brent and Herbie for three hours this evening.

That's how it went after word of the accusation first trickled out in November. The substance of the case mattered only insofar as any investigation might get in the way of a big season for both FSU and Jameis Winston. "Teams have dealt with off-field distractions before," the Los Angeles Times assured us. "How will these off-field distractions affect his leadership role on this team?" a reporter asked coach Jimbo Fisher. It turned out Winston was fine. He showed "no signs of distraction" in his first game after the accusations were made public—a surprise, perhaps, "given all the off-the-field drama that's been surrounding" him. A "season's worth of distractions never knocked Winston off course," ESPN wrote in December. Maybe that's because he talked to Johnny Football about handling "off-field distractions."

Johnny Football's "distraction" was about selling his autograph, not about raping a woman, but that's the beauty of the word "distraction." It's a big, stupid word that can house pretty much anything: drugs, dong shots, player feuds, NCAA violations, criminal charges. It's like a Photoshop tool that announcers abuse over and over again (not all of them—ESPN's Mike Tirico has become so refreshingly blunt that he feels like an anomaly), as if daring to be any more explicit would constitute some horrific breach of etiquette, with thousands of people mobbing the booth and screaming DURRRR STICK TO SPORTS STICK TO SPORTS STICK TO SPORTS DURRRRR. If it doesn't fit into a tidy, Olympics-ready 45-second anecdote from Michele Tafoya down on the sideline, it gets thrown into the "off-the-field distractions" bin.

I fucking hate this. I hate that my favorite sport acts like some buzzcut dad from 1956 who sits over in the corner reading the paper and doesn't say a fucking word to you unless you decide to grow a ponytail one day. Life is a fucking distraction, and football seems determined to keep up the football-only facade despite the fact that life creeps in at every possible opportunity. OH NO! BAD LIFE! SHOO SHOO, GO AWAY! And besides, football is the biggest distraction of all! When people say "I just want to focus on football," they're basically saying, "I just want to focus on this big distraction over here. OOOH SHINY!"

I think that's why people recoiled at that back-slappy press conference after Winston had his charges dropped. It wasn't simply that the state attorney and his cohorts were laughing and giggling; it's that you could sense the profound RELIEF emanating from the room. "Thank God, now we can stick to sports again! We almost had to stop there for a second and consider if our big-time college football program was having a corrosive impact on the community! PHEW!"

Worst of all, this is a sport that CHOOSES its distractions. My favorite player, Adrian Peterson, fathered a love child who ended up being murdered earlier this season. But there's not a soul on Earth (save for maybe Phil Mushnick) who was like, "Boy, they better cut that guy! What with his distractions and all!" You can get away with distractions if you happen to be very good, and you can get away with them if they can be warped into some kind of positive narrative. (Look at him play through the grief!) We pick and choose our distractions, which means they aren't really distractions at all. They are strategically placed pockets of horseshit. If we don't like a distraction—Kluwe supporting the gays, for instance—we brand it. We say Kluwe is "outspoken" (OMG HE LIKES TALKIN'!!!!! THAT'S A DANGER TO THE REPUBLIC!) and let people vilify him as they see fit.

Vikings safety Harrison Smith publicly sided with the team in Kluwe's case, but he also said publicly that Kluwe was never a D-word to the Vikings when he was with them. If you ever ask a football player about distractions, he will almost always tell you that he doesn't give a shit. This is because football players are human beings who have, you know, lives. They're quite used to life intruding on their jobs. But the culture surrounding these players is apparently not, and will do anything in its power to make sure the distractions it doesn't care for are snuffed out and dealt with appropriately. And to these people, I would just like to say: Fuck you. There are no distractions. Stick to life, assholes.

For a guy like Mike Sam who may be a marginal prospect, when a team is trying to decide between Sam and guy just as good as him, or almost as good as him, and a team really has to split hairs to make a roster decision, it could be a factor either way.

Guys get passed on in similar situations for number of reasons. Darren McFadden had 3 kids coming out of college and while it came up it didn't stop him from being a #4 overall pick. For other guys that have been marginal prospects something like that has hurt them.

At the end of the day the NFL is business and you're making an financial investment in a player and when you're trying decide between one or another you weigh everything.

his having an attraction to men doesn't have anything to do with his desire to play football.

other asshats being homophobic has nothing to do with him being 100% focused on football. If anything, it's the homophobic person who the NFL should be trying to identify and remove from the team for being a "distraction" not the homosexual person.

won't be a distraction but the potential hoopla surrounding it could be. When he's got 20 reporters at his locker everyday asking him dumb questions like "How long have you been a gay football player?", when he's got a ton of interview requests and people want him to appear on TV shows and he's just guy in training camp fighting for a roster spot. When he gets in a fight with an offensive lineman in training camp, as defensive linemen tend to do, will there be drama about the offensive linemen attacking him because he's gay? Its going to be a distraction because the media is going to make it a distraction, but I guess somebody has to take that bullet.

and the NFL teams do have PR people on staff for a reason. none of this is that hard to deal with (MANTI TE'O WAS FAMOUS AND CATFISHED) and, once again, is just one person's homophobia masquerading behind the idea that others will be focused on it.

Or does the guy not have an hour a week to give an extra interview? GTFOH.

a fight with an offensive lineman in camp? easy: the o lineman and the d lineman both say its normal training camp stuff, if it was. and if it wasn't, fuck that o lineman forever--that's on HIM not on Sam.

that's probably going to be like a 5th round pick. It is what it is. Some teams and coaches will have no problem with it and even embrace it, some won't.

That's not really news, pro sports teams are run by cowards, homophobes, racists, liars, cheaters and thieves.

And you're displaying a shocking lack of awareness of the national dialogue on LGBT rights.

A headline from just Friday:

http://blogs.metrotimes.com/news-blawg/michigan-rnc-candidate-blame-satan-homosexuality/

"Michigan RNC Candidate: GOP Should Consider ‘Purging’ Gays from Party"

Yes, this is an extreme headline. But it puts an exclamation point on the fact that Homophobia is a very real thing in this country. And the "man's man's sport" comment from an NFL exec underscores that divide in the league.

They're not the same. Focusing on Michael Sam's individual situation instead of the homophobia in the league is what's tripping you up. Like jerseytornado illustrated, Michael Sam is a football player who wants to be an NFL football player (who happens to be gay). End of story.

The real issue is when cowards and homophobes use "distractions" as an excuse to hide ignorance or intolerance.

All I was saying is when teams have to make a decision between 2 players with similar talent, any of those things COULD BE a factor.

Ideally, this will break down that cultural barrier so next year if (when?) there are other openly gay players it'll be "business as usual" and not "distractions".

Last I checked, Kerry Rhodes isn't the first openly gay (about-to-be) NFL player.

So cowards and homophobes can conveniently use the "distractions" excuse to deny him employment, whether or not he's still worthy of playing in the league.

and win games as an NFL QB, he may not be a starter but he's at least good enough to have a backup or 3rd string position somewhere. But most teams passed on him because they didn't want to deal with media circus that surrounded him because they felt it wasn't worth it for a guy that's a marginal player anyway. That's just the nature of the business in the NFL.

You're still trying to compare "off field issues" with "nationally (really globally... look at Russia) polarizing LGBT rights". You're still trying to use Sam as a "marginal" player in an attempt to downplay the cultural impact as the first openly gay NFL player.

You need to pull the lens up from Michael Sam to the culture of homophobia that persists(and not just in the NFL).

Tebow's "issue" has no bearing or relevance to any of this.

player like Clowney, but when you're talking about deciding between 2 guys for the last roster spot on a team something like this could be a factor, EITHER WAY. They're going to look at EVERYTHING. They're going to look at how did he go from being a nobody to SEC player of the year, is he on PED's? Has he "peaked" already at age 24? Is his age and maturity level actually a plus? It ALL will factor in.

You are just privileged, and aren't able to understand
how you benefit from it. Its the product of a homophobic
society, but I can buy that you are actually not hateful
at all

I will say, though, that this story is much more about
getting money from a pretty affluent demographic and
making $$$ than really breaking down barriers

Women, hipsters and gay community don't really fuck
with basketball/football too hard, so this is generating
clicks and paper

That's not the players' fault, though, as I think his
intentions are good and the coming out noteworthy

You didn't say anything inflammatory, though

But you are naive and privileged

Its not on the front page because people give a shit
about a gay football player. Its on the front page its
an opportunity to expand into a new market.

Orbit_Established is consistently the only black guy
at just about everything I do professionally, in a paradigm
just as important for breaking down barriers as sports
(more in the opinion of many, because I have white colleagues
who legitimately don't think poor black people, like me, are
*genetically* built to perform in certain areas)

Nobody cares because there's no money to be made from it.

Unless its an institutional brochure/photoshoot, which I'm
routinely asked to participate in. Why? Because in those
situations my blackness is profitable.

So yes, I speak about race. No, nobody cares. I don't care
that nobody cares, but they don't care.

And ESPN only cares about gays in football because the gay
community doesn't buy jerseys and tickets.

That's not the player's fault, though. He's just speaking
out about something important to him, and good for him.

Same way I speak about diversity at meetings; good for me.

Nobody cares, though.

but i do think you're overplaying the cynicism of the nytimes and/or espn or whoever you're accusing of being so crassly motivated by money and not by this being a major cultural barrier to breakthrough (and, unlike other examples, a relatively easy to understand one and a very popular one).

ESPN didn't write about it, let hipster drive Deadspin
do it, because ESPN finds no value in talking about
black QBs. Its not profitable, at all.

That Wilson is black, undersized, has a great personal story, etc,
is actually is really fucking important, for literal and
symbolic reasons (that he's short got more coverage than his
race).

But ESPN doesn't care, because they have all the black
customers they need. In fact, in racist 2014, being too
black is bad for white, latino and asian business.

This is not the case for gays. Way more hipster money to
make.

ESPN is losing business to the deadspin gawker hipster
cats. They gonna jump this gun and cover it to absolute
death.

Its going to be talked about on EVERY sports show to DEATH.

Why?

Because of money.

Same way NOBODY mentioned Russell Wilson's race.

That's basic econ. That's not cynicism.

ESPN probably knew this months ago. They had enough
drama during the season, didn't need the clicks.

Its a good pre-draft click and money generator.

Not mad at the kid.

But Russell Wilson's race got NO play, AT ALL.

ZERO.

I don't care that he is gay.

I care about those combine numbers.

Bears need D line help so if he is good and we can draft him, cool.

The real progress was made when he came out to his teammates and they treated him like a man.

It doesn't have to be a "story"

The same media that makes it a story also created the atmosphere where he feels pressure to come out to public.

Media speculation is the bigger problem when it comes to these issues.

Agree 100% here

And the media wants you to care so that your gay, women
and hipster friends patronize the NFL

Right now they think, perhaps correctly, that the NFL
is gay-hating, anti-women, etc

This will help sell pink jerseys

Soon they'll have a gay appreciation jersey collection

Not being homophobic, but gay folks are overrepresented
in affluent communities...especially gay black men...they
are doing REALLY well for themselves, and good for them

But they have excess disposable income, none of which is
going to sports

NFL and NBA gonna get that gay paper, you better believe

you don't have to read the article or respond in any way. you don't have to talk about with friends or a message board. no one's forcing you to. you don't even have to make up your mind on the story.

i see your point, but that's also college where coaches have more control over the situation imo. if a college coach says "no one bother him or say anything to the media" it holds more weight than a pro coach saying it.

>It doesn't have to be a "story"
>

it's a story because it's never happened before and there are still questions about acceptance. and the 24/7 news cycle creates MUCH more unnecessary stuff than this, especially during the season.

what circus? objectively speaking, this is a historic event. all "the media"
have done is ask--how will his teammates react? how will fans react?
will this affect his draft position?

where's the "circus?"

>
>
>Lol at me being homophobic

as OE said, you're looking at this from a position of privilege.
you want this gay issue to just go away. you want gays to just be
quiet and keep their gayness to themselves. thing is, we don't do
that as straight people. we talk openly about our relationships with
the opposite sex. even something mundane as a player kissing his girlfriend
on draft night would be a huge deal if it was his boyfriend instead.

visibility is an important step towards equality when it comes to any
marginalized group. once we start seeing multiple gay players in
the major pro sports sharing the same parts of their lives that straight
players share *then* you can say "ok, a press conference isn't necessary duke"

we not there yet, not even close

Utopia isn't gonna happen.

If Kobe his a shot and goes to the sideline to kiss Vanessa, I don't cheer for that nor do I care. I care about the game.

I don't think gay men or women should be banished to silence.

I think that if he came out to his teammates or his family that's his decision. He doesn't owe them or us anything.

This whole fight for acceptance and to be notable just baffles me.

Gay people have been in existence since the beginning.

All of these barriers are private companies and societies built and controlled by men who give not a single fuck what we think.

As mentioned in another post, there were gay players in the 60's. Difference being corporate interests had no ties to football. Who cared.

Race however was tied into laws. You could not eat in the same restaurants with teammates in some areas. That was a different climate.

All that to say.

I hope the dude play football well and is known as a great football player and not just some gay icon lol

People will generally have some sort of cognitive dissonance to watch something they enjoy. People stay tuned into sports cause they like watching sports, not cause they want some sort of social justice cause.

I'm not really sure how the media was supposed to cover this story? If Sportscenter just put this as some item on the ticker or Todd McShay just put it on his scouting report as "PERSONAL: Born January 7, 1990. Homosexual.", someone else would have blown up about the story. I'm pretty sure Sam's team came out (no pun intended) this way so they'd have more control of the narrative instead of just letting rumors or the media horde have its way.

Dude actually somehow came in here and made this a story about "hipsters"

As if, the New York Times running a story about what could be the first openly gay player in the NFL entering the draft, was motivated by reaching the ever-elusive "hipster" demographic...

And then you attempt to use, as proof, the fact that your professional endeavors have not drawn the same attention despite the barriers you believe you are knocking down?

As if whatever the fuck you do (and it could be brain science, point would still stand) is anywhere near as interesting to the public as the happenings of the National Football League.

I have truly fucking seen it all.

Are you the first black person to do what you do? Are we living in a time where the ability of black people to do what you do is held in serious question and a topic of a very public and political debate?

Russell Wilson was not a story because that story been happened and it's name was Doug Williams, Warren Moon, Randall Cunningham, Daunte Culpepper, Mike Vick, Cam Newtown, Colin Kaepernick ET AL . He is a story now, simply because it is not a big story anymore. People have accepted that black people can play QB in the NFL and be good at it. Not everyone is happy about it and plenty undersell his part in winning that trophy but that is neither here nor fucking there.

The only thing you said that is right is that PImpinChicago is speaking for a naive position of privilige.

NFL adopts causes because they are profitable.

Did you see ESPN or the NFL all over the Chris Kluwe
situation? Not like this. Not even close.

Yeah, the one that was ACTUALLY ABOUT DISCRIMINATION
and BIGOTRY!?!?

If it was about causes, and bigotry and really changing
the culture, than his story should have been the object
of 40 different specials.

No? Why?

Its much less profitable to support a left leaning
kicker than a young draft prospect in the months
leading up the NFL draft. There are 30 ESPN specials
to be had on the "gay athlete" now, in this post
Super Bowl window when the NBA is slowly heating up
and the NFL draft approaches.

100 dollars says ESPN knew this story months ago.

They only care about the gay community when there is
money to be made, period.

Same thing with breast cancer awareness and the pink
jerseys.

Its obviously a way to draw in women patrons. Has zero
to do with caring about women's health.

Football's sensitivity, these kinds of appeal, are the keys
to its growth.

The NFL is now having meetings for MOMS to help them understand
the risks involved with football.

Why? If Moms don't enroll kids in Pop Warner, that's
less jerseys, less tickets, etc. Has zero to do with
head injuries.

Its a violent sport that sells violence and gladiators,
and yet sells family men and Make a Wish stories and
sensitivity off the field-

Its exactly why its unfuckwitable as a marketing machine

They make their mistakes, but they learn from them, are
always trying to create a better product

Any story that helps with undermine the women-hating, misogynistic,
homophobic image will be highlighted in this day and age when
being a homophobe is less and less cool.

This is only a story for that reason.

>Dude actually somehow came in here and made this a story
>about "hipsters"

Bad timing for you-

A lot of you were bitching about why ESPN didn't cover
the Big Book of Black QBs story:

Its because Deadspin's demographic cares about black
people more than ESPN does. ESPN is much more into
women and now gays...HUGE financial incentive for those.

NFL has Tony Gonzalez (who barely identifies as Latino)
doing NFL commercials in Spanish, not because they give a
shit about diversity, but because they want that paper.

Same way they market Victor Cruz as Latino when that nigga
is about 1/8 hispanic.

I'm not mad at it, AT ALL, but those are the facts.

>As if, the New York Times running a story about what could be
>the first openly gay player in the NFL entering the draft, was
>motivated by reaching the ever-elusive "hipster"
>demographic...

Well, yeah, actually.

And the New York Times is a bad example because the New York
Times is the most liberal major newspaper in the country

ESPN is not, and has been in bed with awful people all
the time.

And I bet a finger the NFL "shows their support" for
the gay athlete.

Why? So as to not be left behind by the rest of the country.

>And then you attempt to use, as proof, the fact that your
>professional endeavors have not drawn the same attention
>despite the barriers you believe you are knocking down?

LOL.

I didn't use it as "proof," idiot.

Ahaaaa. But Russell Wilson is a black quarterback and got
zero attention also. That he's the second one actually makes
it *more* interesting -- could have been a nice media story, a
way to talk about Doug Williams and the legacy. It wasn't talked
about because there is no money in talking about black people,
because most of ESPN/NFL's demographic isn't interested in
black people anymore.

>Are you the first black person to do what you do? Are we
>living in a time where the ability of black people to do what
>you do is held in serious question and a topic of a very
>public and political debate?

Actually, yes, you idiot.

>Russell Wilson was not a story because that story been
>happened and it's name was Doug Williams, Warren Moon, Randall
>Cunningham, Daunte Culpepper, Mike Vick, Cam Newtown, Colin
>Kaepernick ET AL . He is a story now, simply because it is not
>a big story anymore. People have accepted that black people
>can play QB in the NFL and be good at it. Not everyone is
>happy about it and plenty undersell his part in winning that
>trophy but that is neither here nor fucking there.

Weird how Deadspin decided to cover the topic and it was
a HUGE hit.

Deadspin ran that story because THEIR DEMOGRAPHIC ACTUALLY
CARES ABOUT IT. ESPN's demographic is actually *tired* of
black people. Same with the NFL's. Those stories aren't
interesting to them.

Sexuality, on the other hand, is underexplored. Lots more
room for 30 ESPN specials about "the gay athlete" so that
they can see State Farm commercial space

>The only thing you said that is right is that PImpinChicago is
>speaking for a naive position of privilige.

I'm pretty much the only one with any cohesive opinion about
anything.

You guys are all just spitting meaningless, directionless
hipster drivel.

Women, hipsters (not sure what the qualifications of hipster are) and gays have tons of unique interests but I can assure you tons of us (I'm a lady and a gay) love sports just as much as you do.

Well, no shit.

There are people who do everything.

That's obviously not the point, and what I'm saying isn't
an opinion.

You have pink jerseys and breast cancer awareness in the NFL
to attract female patrons. Why? Because that demographic
isn't, by percentage, particularly fond of the NFL. Not my
opinion.

And gay women aren't the issue here, because women have
in sports been out for decades and accepted, so your
demographic is really not very important for this discussion,
sorry.

Its no secret that gay women, in fact, patronize
and participate in sports more than straight women, per capita

This is about gay men, heteronormative perspectives, their
interactions with straight men, and straight women.

Thought this was a discussion. Thought my points were relevant seeing as how I'm a woman surrounded by women who love to watch football (moms, aunts cousins grandmother coworkers) and gay friends who also love football.

But I'm not sure how I'm supposed to respond to "good grief just stop".

So I'mma just go back to lurking.

Anytime there is a post like this (pertaining to perceived issues of gender) you do the same little disgusting pantomime.

1)Paint yourself as a cool and calm arbiter with no personal stake in subject

2) Dole out soft-pedaled criticism of most reactionary, conservative stances but quickly switch gears to pointing out that the real problem is the imagined supporters of progressive position.

3) Reassert that you are in fact the only progressive party present and that you are appalled by how would be progressives are attacking reactionaries.

4)Bathe in self importance

Shit's disgusting, B©

And painfully see through.

I have a guy in here claiming he's progressive by rallying

Post singular. The first and last. Although it was such a complete and utter ethering in front of the whole board, I am not surprised you have suddenly transformed it into myriad posts (plural).

ostensibly, they didn't have anything against "negroes" playing MLB,
but they were concerned about the player being a distraction,
dividing the team, dividing the fan base etc

his entrance into the league was *disruptive*--the word we should be
using--because it challenged the established order. but it was a
necessary disruption, and so is Sam's announcement

Because it took balls and visionary leadership
to pull it off.

That's why his teammates being mentally tough and
supportive was also a big part of it.

That's why those teams were so great.

http://www.tmz.com/2014/02/10/roger-goodell-michael-sam-gay-brother-michael-goodell/

Michael Sam is "an instant hero in the gay and lesbian community" ... so says the brother of NFL commish Roger Goodell, who's also openly gay.

TMZ Sports spoke to Michael Goodell ... who says "it's about time" a top NFL prospect was brave enough to be open about his sexuality.

In fact, Michael compares Sam to Jackie Robinson -- saying because of the defensive end's courage, homosexuality in the NFL "won't be an issue in 10 to 20 years."

Michael -- who's very close with his brother -- says he hasn't spoken to Roger about Michael Sam yet ... but says he knows, "Roger is fine with this. He's a good businessman and he's been around this issue his whole life."

As for whether he thinks Sam's announcement will affect his draft stock -- Michael says, "I've met a lot of the NFL owners through my brother. They're businessmen, not homophobes."

No matter what, good for him for not apologizing for being himself. The best result of this story would be for him to stick in the NFL, and continue being himself.

Hopefully he's getting to work, though, because the NFL doesn't do anyone any favors. He'll be around as long as he's useful to an NFL team, but probably not a second longer.

You get the gold star for your progressiveness. I hope that most ppl
react similarly and don't hate homeboy for being a cocksucking poofter and just watch him play football. In them tight pants. With his bulging leg muscles barely restrained. And all that manliness just bursting at the seams of his uniform threatening to tear through. As his fellow players throw themselves against him. Body to body - all that unbridled manhood on display. Just sweaty and wondrous. And heaving. And thrusting. And musky. And wonderful.

I hope more ppl agree with you than with the haters and phobes.

i hope that your lackadaisical, non-chalant attitude about this prevails among all the homophobic community. i pray you're a trendsetter in your only caring about the man's football career. so you won't be bothered at all by pics of him hugged up w/his lover(s) off the field or by pics of his lover watching him at the stadium. or by stories about their home life. or pics of them w/their kid(s) if they have any. or by any stories about any drama in his love life. you won't be one of those who want him to keep all of that to himself, wondering why the gays have to put it in your face all the time, b/c you ONLY care about his football and not his love life. so you won't care about any media coverage of his love life. you'll just ignore it. no talk about it at the barbershop. no wondering which of them "is the woman". no talk about how much you disagree w/"that lifestyle". no talk about the man's love life as a "lifestyle" at all b/c you don't care.

i hope it spreads, man.

Milking it for discussions. Milking it for specials.

Milking it for 14 "outside the lines" specials

With 400 Chris and Cliff Paul commercials

Meanwhile Chris Kluwe's situation, which is actually

Why?

Because they are interested in commercials, not equality

Apparently my correct stance on this makes me heteronormative

I stopped reading the post above once we got to the "this isn't a big deal" reply, so I don't know what you said above or why people think you're heteronormative.

But thinking the media is interested in commercials and not equality is obviously true. Just continually disappointing.

but it looks like his team is on top of it...

"Bragman realized some LGBT activists would also be unhappy. While other athletes like Jason Collins and Robbie Rogers have been readily available to lend their voices to various LGBT organizations, that won't happen with Sam. He's at the beginning of his career, not the middle or end like Rogers and Collins. Trying to get drafted, make a roster and step foot on an NFL field in September is a big task. His role in the movement toward LGBT equality in sports will be simply playing the sport as an out gay man — a role many have been waiting years for someone to step into. Bragman reached out to various organizations to make that message clear. They all agreed."

"Michael is a football player, not an activist," Bragman said. "If you start showing up at too many dinners and too many parades, you start to send the message to a potential team about his priorities. The community wins when he steps onto an NFL field and plays in a game, not as the grand marshal of a pride parade. He may do that eventually, but the first year needs to be all about football."

His radio show killed it yesterday. He had John Amaechi on his show for an hour to discuss this. I love hearing Amaechi discuss a variety of topics but he was speaking truth yesterday.

After Amaechi was done on the show some ESPN exec called LeBatard's producer and wanted LeBatard to apologize on the air for some of the things Amaechi said. Dan gave a half-heated apology and the ESPN exec told Dan's producer he had to "read the apology" that was written for him.

Dan went off!!!! It was a classic rant. So, I suspect Dan will be getting a "vacation" from his radio show.

it's not a big deal. shit ain't mutually exclusive. and i'd rather hear media reports of people fighting discrimination than harbaugh's $8 pants.

and for those who "only care about football", gimme a break. from kurt warner's wife to brett favre's dad to randall cunningham's tile company to vick and his dogs to DUIs and failed drug tests and stolen laptops and locker room fights, i mean come on. sports is never "just" sports. if this story, right here, is the one that broke the camel's back for you then so be it. log off OKP, where there's just as much gossipy bullshit than anywhere else, stop listening to sports radio, and avoid the media at all costs.

but if you're just popping off on this one topic and letting all the other stuff slide, then you gotta work on your thesis a little bit more and deserve to get called out on bullshit posts.

197. "Donte Stallworth says a team capable of being distracted stinks anyway"
In response to Reply # 0
Tue Feb-11-14 01:16 PM by Nodima

just a lot of great quotes in this, perhaps especially coming from someone who's no stranger to being a "distraction".

----------------

On Monday, former NFL wide receiver Donte' Stallworth sent 20 tweets and used 457 words to explain why some NFL teams are ill-equipped to handle the media coverage that comes with signing Sam, a reality that speaks more about that organization's ineptitude than Sam's sexual preference.

"Herm Edwards posed a hypothetical question on ESPN RE: drafting Michael Sam, 'Can (GM/owner/coach) handle the media ... with this situation?'" Stallworth began.

"If any NFL team can't 'handle the media coverage' of drafting Sam, then your team is already a loser on the field... let me tell you why: There are a multitude of issues that can arise in the long duration of an NFL season... some on the field, some off the field. You won't have any idea what that on the field/off the field situation is until it's already upon you and the entire organization.

"Which means that with drafting Michael Sam, you get a jump start on controlling the 'media coverage' right from the onset. If an organization is inept to the magnitude of not being able to control things with prior knowledge, how will you handle the unexpected?

"Case Study 1: The Miami Dolphins and the bullying scandal. Players talked more about THAT than they did football... for weeks! During that time I questioned (tweeted) why the Dolphins players were talking more about the scandal than their next opponent Since the bullying story broke, the Dolphins finished the season 4-4 with their playoff hopes still alive, got spanked by division opponent, Jets, 20-7.

"Case Study 2: The New England Patriots and Aaron Hernandez AND Tim Tebow situations. Beyond the state of shock I endured after the revelations of Hernandez, I knew that if ANY organization could handle this, it was the Pats. This all happened right before training camp where players are supposed to come in w/clear minds in preparation for a long, rigorous season.

"Not only were there questions about Aaron, but also about the health of Gronkowski and how those two combined affected the team as a whole. Aaron is still awaiting trial & Gronk played in only 7 games this season but yet the Pats seemed to avoid those 'distractions' altogether. Despite many season ending injuries to key pieces, the Pats finished 12-4 and lost to the Broncos in the AFC title with ... ZERO distractions.

"Not to mention the whole Tebow signing and (alleged subsequent) distraction wasn't even a blip on most radars," Stallworth continued. "Why? Because Mr. Kraft and Bill Belichick would not allow ANY of that to be a 'distraction' to ANYONE in the entire organization.

"In my 10 years as an NFL player, I've played for six different teams and have been in every kind of locker room. Vet, young, mature, immature. The leaders of an NFL organization AND the locker room better be able to handle adversity that is certain to emerge during a long NFL season.

"In my experience, if your organization can't 'handle media coverage,' they will suck on the field anyway. But hey, there's always 2015."

The Dolphins/Patriots comparison is perfect. The Dolphins couldn't have handled the whole bullying situation in a worse way. Meanwhile, the Pats had to deal with one of their star players being an alleged murderer and you never even would have thought anything was wrong by looking at them play.

This whole distraction thing is just tired and it's just an excuse for an organization to be lazy and continue to run their team in a shitty way.

204. "Kluwe: "Calling Sam a 'distraction' same as calling Sherman a 'thug'""
In response to Reply # 0

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2014/02/10/chris-kluwe-michael-sam-gay-distraction_n_4761939.html?utm_hp_ref=sports

WASHINGTON -- On Saturday night, a handful of athletes and others in the professional sports world gathered in Los Angeles for a party to celebrate the coming out of Michael Sam, the University of Missouri defensive end and NFL draft prospect who publicly announced he was gay Sunday. One of the few individuals who knew about Sam's plans and attended the party was former NFL punter Chris Kluwe, who has been one of the most outspoken advocates for LGBT equality in sports.

"It was fun," Kluwe told The Huffington Post Monday about the gathering. "I tried to tell Michael about basically what he's going to be facing in the NFL, what the locker room is going to be like. ... Essentially just try and stay as relaxed as possible, and trust in the fact that you can play football well, you can play at a very high level -- that's why you've gotten to this point -- so block out the other stuff as much as you can and keep doing what you know how to do."

In an interview with ESPN posted Sunday, Sam said his Mizzou teammates and coaches have known he is gay since August.

"They supported me from Day One. I couldn't have better teammates," Sam said. "I'm telling you what: I wouldn't have the strength to do this today if I didn't know how much support they'd given me this past semester."

Much of the immediate reaction to Sam's announcement -- and the fact that he could become the league's first openly gay player -- was overwhelmingly positive. But there was some negativity, with NFL executives and coaches commenting to Sports Illustrated that they believed Sam's sexual orientation would hurt his prospects in the draft. Tellingly, they all did so anonymously.

An NFL player personnel assistant said football is still a "man's-man game" and having an openly gay player would "chemically imbalance an NFL locker room and meeting room." Other officials said teams and coaches most likely would not want to put up with the publicity and attention that would come with signing Sam.

"There are guys in locker rooms that maturity-wise cannot handle it or deal with the thought of that," said an assistant coach. "There's nothing more sensitive than the heartbeat of the locker room. If you knowingly bring someone in there with that sexual orientation, how are the other guys going to deal with it? It's going to be a big distraction. That's the reality. It shouldn't be, but it will be."

Kluwe said he unfortunately wasn't that surprised by the comments in the Sports Illustrated article. He predicted that if gay players run into opposition, it will likely be from front office and coaching staff -- who tend to be older and more traditional -- than from players.

"You can look at all those quotes that were said in that article," he added. "They could very easily have been lifted from a paper right around the time Jackie Robinson was entering Major League Baseball. They're almost word for word. It's like, wait a minute, we've had this struggle before. We already know how it turns out, why are we doing this again?"

Kluwe objected to the unnamed coach saying an openly gay player would be a "distraction," noting that teams always have to deal with players' personal issues, ranging from their dating lives to their problems with the law.

"One thing I thought was really interesting was the very word 'distraction,'" said Kluwe. "You see that used a lot by the front office and coaching. It's very similar to how the word 'thug' was used when Richard Sherman was the topic of conversation. It seems that this word distraction is code for, I don't really like the idea of a gay player on my team, but I know I can't come out and say that, so I'll use the word 'distraction' instead."

Last month, Sherman, a cornerback for the Seattle Seahawks, criticized San Francisco 49ers wide receiver Michael Crabtree in a post-game interview. Sherman's critics went after him for the unsportsmanlike behavior, and many people online called him a "thug," among other unsavory terms.

"The reason it bothers me is because it seems like it's an accepted way of calling somebody the N-word now," said Sherman. "It's like everybody else said the N-word and then they say 'thug' and that's fine. It kind of takes me aback and it's kind of disappointing because they know."

Discriminating against Sam in the draft because of his sexual orientation would violate the NFL's own anti-discrimination policy, which was added to the collective bargaining agreement between the league and the NFL Players Association in 2011. But Kluwe said it'd be difficult to prove that discrimination actually took place.

"Most of them are smart enough not to put anything down in writing where you have an email chain or something like that," he said. "It would just be, 'Hey, this guy could be considered a distraction.' Or, 'Have you heard about this Michael Sam kid? Is his character there?' It's very much code-word type stuff."

"While it would be extremely difficult to prove -- given that none of the general managers or team personnel had the courage to put their names to what they said -- if we found any evidence, we would pursue it," said NFLPA spokesman George Atallah. "It just goes to show you the dichotomy of a young, 24-year-old man, who was brave enough to stand up and tell his own story, as opposed to the people who are potentially going to be in a position to hire him."

Kluwe, an ambassador for the pro-LGBT group Athlete Ally, is currently a free agent, after playing with the Minnesota Vikings for eight seasons. Last month, he wrote a piece for Deadspin saying he was "pretty confident" that the reason the team let him go in March 2013 was because of his advocacy for LGBT rights.

Sheldon Richardson roomed with 'regular guy' Michael Sam

The Associated Press Sporting News

Sheldon Richardson knew Michael Sam was gay. And it never mattered to him.

He's just proud his former roommate at the University of Missouri had the courage to come out publicly and reveal his sexuality.

"I lived with Michael Sam," Richardson said during an interview Tuesday with New York's SNY cable network. "Regular guy, has his own sexuality. Didn't take nothing from him. He was a great teammate, a great person. Everything you wanted out of him, you got out of him.

"You wanted a football player. You got the football player."

Richardson, the AP Defensive Rookie of the Year, spoke to SNY while training in Houston with Jets teammate Muhammad Wilkerson. He said Sam never came out to him during their time as roommates, but "you knew, you saw him." Richardson added that Sam's sexuality had no effect on their relationship.

"I didn't care," Richardson said. "I wasn't there when he came out to the team ... but like I said, seen him pretty much every morning, every day, so just something you get used to. He left the house, went to school, went to class, went to practice and came home. ... Conversed when we wanted to, but it wasn't anything unusual.

Sam, an All-America defensive end, revealed to his teammates he was gay at one of the football team's dinners last summer — after Richardson had been drafted in the first round by the Jets. On Sunday, Sam came out publicly in interviews with ESPN, The New York Times and Outsports, and he could become the first openly homosexual player in the NFL.

"He had his best season when he came out to the team, so I'm actually happy for him," Richardson said. "And it worked out for him. Didn't go the opposite way because I know he was scared and nervous just for him to be himself and just him getting that monkey off his back was well worth it because he had his best season of football at Mizzou."

Richardson also insists there's "most definitely" a place for Sam in an NFL locker room.

"I promise you, his sexuality has nothing to do with him playing on the football field," Richardson said. "He is a completely different person. He put this face on. No smiles, serious business. He's a killer."

Sam is projected by many as a potential middle-round draft pick in May. Richardson thinks NFL teams will be able to adjust to the scrutiny and attention that having Sam on their roster could bring.

"I believe, I mean, unless your team is immature minded," Richardson said. "If guys can't get past that then, I mean it's just crazy. Of course, it might be weird at first if you aren't used to it because, like I said, with me living with him it was a little bit unusual at first, but it's stuff you look past."

I don't think ESPN had cameras at the homes of any other 7th round picks. It's interesting that it appeared that he didn't have any family there.

At this point all I care about is can help the Rams on the football field and not be too big of a distraction off of it.

I'm interested to see how Fisher and Greg Williams plan to use him. I thought he would be best suited as an OLB in a 3-4 defense but we play a 4-3.

They were there because being the first gay player potentially drafted is a very big deal, regardless of if he ever even takes the field.

One of the most memorable NFL Draft moments in its history. For those that loved it and those that hated it, it won't be forgotten.

not sure what their heavily scripted scenes accomplished in the way of advancing gay rights or altering the viewpoints of homophobic and hateful Americans. If anything, it was divisive.

as always, ESPN is about their own self interest and the bottom line

No, but a big fan of their cuisine. I like Fage..tried the Chobani once and didn't like it nearly as much. But dairy fucks with me so I've cut it out completely over the past year. Yogurt ain't such a big deal to me but I do genuinely miss feta.

By the same logic, people talking about the historical nature of Obama's election are being divisive.

Showing the Obama family daily routines in the White House is divisive.

Shit makes no sense.

opposite, have him focus on making an NFL team and not be a prop for the gay agenda. That line of thinking didn't seem to last long.

lots of ratings and discussion for ESPN and not much else.

Unless you feel that the act itself was some sort of achievement or end-goal or as a means to pave the way for more kissing, I'm not seeing what "progress" was made.

This management group and coaching staff are really putting together something special. I have the greatest respect for Stan Kroenke, Les Snead, Kevin Demoff and Jeff Fisher. This move took guts, and this is actually the perfect fit for Michael Sam. What a great way to end a terrific draft for the Rams.
