I’m not particularly a Godzilla fan and this blew me away. Probably in my top 5 for the year. Looks better than movies with 10x its budget and has characters that you can truly feel for. See this with a crowd if you have the chance.

You get way more bang for your buck overseas in general. Like, I was told if a movie I wrote needed a 5 million budget, we could shoot it in Asia and make it look like a 30 mil budget. The filmmaking was strong, but people online saying "this only cost ~15 mil!" are waving their hand at the industry working conditions and hours and pay over there compared to here, lol.
I should point out that as much as the visuals impressed me as compared to the budget, the main thing that impressed me was how much I cared about the characters in a blockbuster monster movie. Feels increasingly rare.

Probably the most horrifying I can recall Godzilla being in a Godzilla movie. Also dug the boat crew. Any movie with characters named things like "Doc" and "Kid" work for me.
First act a little long, a little repetitive-- can't pretend I didn't start to zone out in that gap between the first two appearances of our Thicc King. But all in all, a really effective, crowd-pleasing blockbuster.

Like he was in this. The island, the first ship chase, the Tokyo mess, he was completely menacing. Loved every minute. And then the actors were phenomenal in this compared to recent films for both U.S. and Japan. I felt for the people for a change. Great stuff.

For those of you (like me) who still buy physical media of your favorite things, it looks like (fingers crossed) apparently "Godzilla Minus One" will get the Criterion treatment on its release.
Criterion releases are well known for offering the BEST video/audio quality available and typically pack their releases with a HEALTHY dose of GOOD extras. (NOT just the crumbs of lame brief 'so-called' extras that most regular releases come with these days).
If the rumor is true, then im SO lookin forward to a "Godzilla Minus One" Criterion 4K/BD Color & B&W release.

what i heard was that 'Toho' (the Japanese company who made 'G-1') is 'in talks/planning to work with' with 'JanusFilms' (which is the company that is in a close relationship with 'Criterion') to release Godzilla Minus One over here.
kinda makes sense too because Criterion has already released some of the older Godzilla films from Toho. So, yeah, fingers crossed that they also get to release what i'd say is the BEST Godzilla movie as well.
