2. "A total mess, but better than most 2023 live action superhero fare." In response to Reply # 0
If only because James Wan knows how to frame these shots and make superhero cinema actually look both heroic and cinematic. There's some godawful Momoa shtick and a stupid-ass opening that I hated and some clearly rushed last minute CGI in places... but there's also very good creature design and some fun action and a competent director and a truly delightful Patrick Wilson performance.
IMO the second best live action superhero movie this year. Low bar to clear, but that's where I landed, more or less. (I did like the first Aquaman, though, fwiw.)

5. "People who thought Marvels tanked due to women/wokeness are dumb." In response to Reply # 4 Tue Dec-26-23 04:33 PM by Frank Longo
It tanked because general opinion (including my own) was that it wasn't good, which led to mediocre trailers and bad word of mouth. Even if people thought it was "fine," we're past the point where people automatically see every superhero movie, even for Marvel, unless word of mouth and reviews are positive.
Also less shocking that Aquaman tanked considering everything DC put out this year tanked before this, lol. But yeah, it's yet another example of people not immediately skewing toward superhero fare. 2023 will be the biggest box office year since 2019, but it's the first year in a long time (2020 notwithstanding) where there weren't 4+ superhero movies in the top 10.
