"After Yang (A24, Kogonada, Colin Farell, Jodie Turner-Smith, 2021)"

This is the type of Sci-Fi that provokes meaningful conversation. The manner in which Arrival used time as a structure through which to explore humanity, After Yang uses the memories of a no longer functional 'techno-sapien' as a vehicle to explore the android's effect on its host family, and as the family becomes aware of Yang's interior life, the more they realize that there is nothing improper about what they come to realize is grief. Colin Farell, Jodie Turner-Smith, Justin H Min and the precocious Malea Emma Tjandrawidjaja turn in amazing, nuanced performances.

Its on Hulu and you watch on youtube as well. Well worth your time.

Even if I found some of this low-key to the point where it bordered on perhaps too understated, there were several incredibly lovely sequences. I think Kogonada's a *very* real talent.

the slow burn worked for me because you get pulled into Colin Farell's story as he dives into finding out what is going on, and you wonder what he is looking for...did Yang record him doing or saying something crazy? As the curtains get pulled back I ended up questioning why I was framing Farell's character like that, when I realized his character was searching for something in himself, and since he couldn't find it, he turned to the androids memories to search. And he found it. And I found it. I love when a film can do that.
