Because Paul Schrader received a screenplay nomination.

Having said that, I'm not surprised that this happened. First Reformed is a film that takes environmentalism, religion, and personal accountability very seriously. I've always noticed how meh people (read: the average mainstream moviegoer) are on films with heavier subject matter.

but no The Rider/First Reformed/Leave No Trace (heck You Were Never Really Here) is sooooper lame. A few bright spots, but maybe I need to stop watching once and for all, I don't think I can take a Green Book win

... this would actually be a good list! A lot to cheer for.

But... yeah. BR, Green Book, and Vice all getting lots of nominations is a Bad Sign.

The film seemed like a shoo-in for a Best Original Screenplay nomination considering the fact that the film was a sleeper summer hit.

I just wished he did push to get nominated. Imagine what a Boots Riley acceptance speech would've been.

Granted, I haven't seen all of the nominees yet. Roma is just full of so much sound for a film without a score and no big sweeping action sequences. The exterior shots have so much crisp detail within them. If you watch the film on TV with surround sound, it's really noticeable (in a good way). The riot scene, the wildfire scene, and the beach scene are some of the best-sounding scenes I've heard recently.

Although I'm glad The Ballad of Buster Scruggs got some love, even if it won't win.

And I'd love to see Infinity War win for best Visual Effects, but I'm sure First Man will win it, just cause the Academy is full of snobs. In the same way that Black Panther got those nominations based on the box office numbers, but I doubt that it will win anything.

I am surprised Beale Street didnt get a director or cinematography nod, that movie was beautiful. Best Picture as well, but I could see how some voters would not have had that there. Also I thought the actor who played tish was amazing.
