"PTP Vets Corner"

Just wondering, how many old heads are still here? I recognize several of you, like of course Frank, but it's easy to lose track. Some of us have been on this board since it started, like a decade and a half ago.

How many OKgrandparents are still around?

And what are y'all watching these days?

I don't even know where to start on what I'm watching. Just read the Snowfall and Mayans MC post to see me and Mynorti trash both main characters.

I do miss PTP COTW

We even had a lil web page. I still remember the article I wrote about Storm. Such good times. But I can't blame them, I've been out the PTP game since right after Ciil War.

But I've been here on the boards in some capacity since this forum was called Reviews. (or has my memory failed and I'm thinking that movies were once posted in The Lesson?)

I'm not a frequent poster tho, mostly a lurker. I don't follow the trades or reviewers often so coming here and checking out y'alls reviews gives me a good sense of what's hot and what to pass on. We all have somewhat similar taste and background in movies and TV so I take your opinions with regard.

I do miss the days when the boards were busier. I think we all do. But it's been cool to absorb the depth of knowledge and insights that many of the folks who post here have.

The movies talked about were more diverse.

There was way more discussions about foreign and independent films. Don't get me wrong, I love mainstream stuff too. But it was good to be in the know about indie or under the radar stuff too. In fact one Okayplayer living in Asia hooked me up with several great Korean and Chinese films that I wouldn't have easily been able to get otherwise.

Now? Honestly bwood's posts is at least 50% of the reason I'm still around. And PTP led me to Dae's podcast, which I really dig.

At least good discussions still pop up every now and then.

We should be glad this is even still around. Most stuff like this probably switched over to Facebook years ago.

... even this was largely due to, like, five or six dedicated users who enjoyed these topics. Reviews/PTP has always been one of the most user-devotion-reliant boards on OKP. Without looking, I'd bet 75% of the posts/replies in the last five years of this board were done by as little as 30 to 40 people. So when *anyone* leaves, the board feels it.

Which is part of what's made it special. But it's also part of why it's so damn slow sometimes. Especially as we all get older and young people don't use message boards anymore.

because we all knew each other's vantage points really well, based on all sorts of genres and releases. I didn't agree with everybody but I could read their take and understand where they were coming from.

I was pondering starting a yearly compilation thread where we could post about foreign/indie stuff, to avoid having great movies fall by the wayside, but I dunno if that would work. For example I saw the new Nuri Bilge Ceylan this weekend, I wouldn't create a new post but maybe if there was a general thread I'm put up a few thoughts, see if anyone bites.

One of my things too is that some posters seem to be able to access movies way before they come to my neck of the woods (I'm in Houston, so not middle of nowhere either), and by the time I've seen a movie any discussion on here is is weeks old. Not sure there's a solution to that. At least TV shows keep things democratic...

I understand. Well yeah there are a couple players, in particular b, who are in the industry in some manner and get in on premieres and advance screenings. But the larger part of the conversation happens around the first 3-5 days after opening weekend. Honestly it's just a reflection of the times; in general nowadays people stop talking about a movie a week or two after its opening weekend, unless the movie is an EVENT Black Panther or Infinity War.

Personally, for 90% of the major movies, I either catch them on opening weekend, or not at all. Hence I still haven't seen Justice League (I think I made the right call though).

I would be SO down for a general post where we can talk about foreign and indie films. I guess the only issue is that if it doesn't make it to Hulu, Amazon or Netflix, it stays off the radar. I kind of hate how they've taken over like that. If it's not streaming on one of the Top Monsters, it practically doesn't exist.

Let them call us latte sippers or whatever. I don't give a fuck. Let's talk about arthouse shit.

The Official Pass The Artisan Single-Origin Popcorn Post? I can always create one and if it goes wood leave it be. Though with Oscar-season (tm) coming up, I assume the smaller flicks will be a lesser focus, versus the awards darlings who'll probably get their own post. Maybe best to start the process at the start of 2019, I dunno.

I was thinking of starting a prep thread this past summer in which we'd post our yearly top 10-20 (so far) lists from 2010 to 2018. Posting review capsules would be encouraged but not necessary. Or we could start the weekly What Did You Watch Last Week posts again. Submit formal ballots in Nov-Dec 2019. An OKP or two (or three) would compile the results. Results would be posted in Jan-Feb 2020.

same but with less emphasis on what to pass on. i try to keep my posting sporadic and inconsequential, but i check here every day and value the eclectic and good taste while recognizing the gaps. i'll see movies and occasionally even shows throughout the year purely on cosigns from this board. i do not read professional reviews or set out to check movie news or view trailers on my own. i'm much more interested in movies and shows i can actually watch, and this board has been an immense resource in that regard while also putting projects on my radar weeks to years before they land if ever (which is fine but not my favorite).

this board moves so slowly now it's the only one i follow. i don't do social media at all. PTP is one of my last tethers to the life i built online for myself starting at age 12.

It's weird to consider how long this has been around.

A shame I don't get to the other boards anymore. Make the Music used to be my Number #1 resource for finding out about new (and old) music. I don't know how it is now, but it used to be--especially when ?uest was posting--like a grad school. I learned so much over there.

I do miss a few players that used to post daily, like Afkap and Amishrock.

used to be pretty prolific catching new releases and older classics...life has cut that down to RedBox once a month.

but I choose to remember the good times. The Sopranos and The Wire megathreads (Breaking Bad too, I guess, although I'm not a fan). those of us who watched a lot of good to crappy reality tv (Top Chef). and of course the movies, where you could have a bunch of in-depth conversations about films that grossed less than $5 million, then have the same people argue about the MCU.

most recently the deuce, and mayans (as jiggysmydayjob mentioned above is mostly just to talk shit)

my movie viewing has pretty much slowed to a crawl, but this place was a hell of a resource at a time. i learned quite a bit about film from people on this board past and present from reviews to ptp. definitely more than anywhere else.
