So far, so good.

I mean yes, they're doing the whole 'hero loses everything, has to start from scratch and rebuild himself' angle. I'm just hoping that, like Luke Cage, it goes in an interesting new direction.

Murdock, Kingpin or Bullseye

I also got my fill of sad sack Matt and little kid Matt in the first episode so if he's talking to Sister Whatever (Joanne Whalley is fucking great tho) or Father Whoever I just pass skip to the next scene.

It's an all-timer. At first I was like 'hallway fight' but those words were quickly and brutally dropkicked right down my damn throat. It is so ambitious and so well-executed on every level. Shout out to Charlie Cox for that kick (you'll know it when you see it)

but it might be my favorite season so far.

Joanne Whalley out here giving an Emmy-worthy performance. I'd watch a spinoff featuring her and Rosario Dawson's character called Healers for Hire before anything else

I was laughing my ass off during the climactic fight. The whole episode was just nuts. Everything about the wedding was a HOT fucking mess including Bullseye and his frigid ass +1.

Vanessa posted up in the background on the stairs w/ her hand on the railing. Bullseye throwing more household objects vs. Matt using those gaudy-ass lamps as sticks. Just fucking ridiculous. Way to end the season with one of the worst episodes of the series.

Much better than season 2.

I like the fact that Murdock/Daredevil is a great fighter but not invincible. The henchmen don't just drop easily. Daredevil wins but he takes a constant beating.

The ending was a little too neat and tied up. It makes me think that this is going to get canceled to, and Marvel really does intend to move all of these shows over to the Disney streaming service.

The supporting characters were all good, especially Det. Ray Nadeen's story arc (which was sad but necessary). Bullseye was a good villain, and the Wilson Fisk character once again served as a great villain.

I kind of wish there was a tie-in cameo. Maybe Jessica Jones. Turk. Misty Knight. Night Nurse. Maybe they're trying to move away from the shared universe, but I kind of still want them to build on it. It's in the Marvel universe, after all.

If this is going to continue, I can see season 4 introducing a new villain, but then maybe in season 5 Vanessa gets murdered and Wilson Fisk comes back with a vengeance. She's the only thing keeping him from a rampage.

Overall really good. Better than JJ S2 and Iron Fist S2. IMO not quite as good as Luke Cage S2, but only because the last episode of that one really took it to the next level.

That Luke Cage would show up at either the round table meeting or King Pin's wedding, since he is the new "king" of Harlem.

really really liked it. there were a couple of low spots but as whole this was great.

the last episode was a bit ridiculous but it did feel like they wanted to tie up everything.

the frozen +1 is hilarious, both in the episode and the above comment.

I almost wouldn't be surprised if they were going to end the show along with Luke Cage and Iron Fist. They wrapped it all way too neatly.

There are directions they could go. Like Fisk's wife surprises everyone by going crime boss to get Fisk out of prison. Or she gets killed and that puts Fisk over the edge since she was the only thing keeping him away from full Beast Mode. Or bring in one of Daredevil's many other villains.

But everyone's story arc was done, so honestly they could just cancel it.

Who knows, maybe the numbers dropped so much that they saw the whole Marvel Netflix universe as a failure, and now they want to drop them all.

Which is a shame. If the quality of the shows were better and more importantly if The Defenders were a much better mini-series, I bet Kevin Feige would have put more consideration into bringing them into the MCU, even if just for a cameo. But I don't think he was going to go near them if they didn't do Game of Thrones/early Walking Dead type numbers.

from what i have seen, the disney streaming stuff is just rumors and not really in play. netflix has the rights to the characters. they wont give that up without getting paid well.

i think after JJ s3 and punisher they need to do another defenders but maybe not call it defender. more of a daredevil s4 that sprinkles in the other characters.

probably chill on releasing seasons so close together. how many different marvel shows were released this year? 4/5? maybe if they consolidate the characters into two shows they can make it work.

Agents of Shield has pretty good ratings (or did in the past). They don’t appear in the films. Pretty sure Feige is gonna keep all the non-film stuff outta the MCU. Once Ghost Rider was in Agents of Shield, I figured we’d never see a Ghost Rider Film again.

Also Daredevil wasn’t wrapped up, Fisk knows Daredevil’s identity now and Bullseye is gonna come back. They’re probably gonna bring back Electra and work in that infamous Bullseye/Electra fight. After all, if Fisk knows Matt’s identity, how long until he figures out his connection to Electra? Only problem is, they eliminated Bullseye’s allegiance to Fisk. So they’d have to work a new angle to explain why he’d fight her. Unless they go the comics route and have her become Fisk’s top assassin.

The DA sort of owes Foggy a favor for dropping out. Misty is about to get promoted to captain. Murdock and Nelson is back in effect. And Vanessa is definitely mobbed out now. She will probably take over the operation now that Fisk is out. They also brought in Karen’s drug past, so they might have her relapse.

Peace,

Spirit (Alan)

The most we could possibly expect to see would be some kind of easter egg reference to these characters - something that an average person watching an MCU film wouldn't even realize that they missed.

It would be dope to see Kingpin as the villain in a Spiderman movie, but I really doubt that would happen.

The difference between the celebrity-like superheroes of the MCU and the local NY heroes of the Marvel Netflix shows, maybe with Spiderman right in the middle, would have made for a really interesting story arc.

Seriously, all they would have had to do is specify that the Netflix shows all took place around the time of the first two Avengers movies. Especially since they've already referenced both movies. That way they have some room to play around in without having to clash with the events in Civil War or Infinity War.

Then at the end of Infinity War, show quick shots of all or most of the Defenders characters getting wiped out by the Snap.

It wouldn't have required much explanation, and the events of Avengers 4 are obviously going to undo it. It would have been huge fan service that might have even made more people interested in the Netflix shows.

I mean I see why they didn't do it, but it still feels like a missed opportunity.

Man that was good. It may have been my favorite season. All in, Daredevil has been the strongest of all the Netflix shows. There hasn't been an announcement of it's future, but I sure hope that Netflix doesn't cancel it. At the very least, it can go to Disney Plus if it is canceled.

again, stellar casting and nice performances all the way around in Daredevil. The actors playing DD, Kingpin, Sister Maggie, Bullseye, Agent Nadeem were all exceptional....

#1...the writing & character motivations on Daredevil consistently stand above the other Marvel Netflix shows. The characters here in DD act they way they SHOULD act based on their previous archs & current situations. I appreciate that...i NEED that to be true in order to keep me involved. Daredevil season 3 does not disappoint here. Very satisfying in that regard.

#2...the creative design and execution of the FIGHT CHOREOGRAPHY in DD is simply MILES above the other Marvel Netflix shows. To me, especially for these 'earth bound, gritty' Netflix shows, this is CRITICAL to have CREATIVE well planned and interestingly filmed fight/action scenes. Not over reliant on CGI or 'special' effects...instead well thought out mostly practical action that you could FEEL. Again, DD season 3 delivers the goods.

#3...good villianny. I lovez me some Kingpin...SPECIFICALLY Vincent D'Onofrios portrayal...soo damn good....again. That plus Wilson Bethel's work as Bulls is great...he really captured his pathos, inner struggle well. i totally bought in and believed.

i want more. as long as the quality stays at this level, i want more....

32. "Kingpin."
In response to Reply # 0

without doubt, my favorite aspect of this season is the gravitas they give Kingpin. I mean, he's had it since season 1, but here they really SHOW YOU how/why this dude is so powerful and feared, as opposed to just telling you. and Vincent D. does such a great job of presenting a powerful, imposing figure you do not wanna F with (or deliver bad news to).

my only complaints are with the *extremely* sloppy reveal of Sis. Maggie's true connection to Matt, the picture perfect postcard ending that seemed way too neat n' rosy, and the cheesy DUN-DUN-DUN stinger at the end (aren't we past these already??).

but those issues aside, solid. I cared. (when the silver bullet plan crumbles, I was right there with Matt: "We tried it your way!")

33. "'Daredevil' Canceled at Netflix as Marvel Roster Shrinks to Two"

'Daredevil' Canceled at Netflix as Marvel Roster Shrinks to Two
NOVEMBER 29, 2018 5:51pm PT by Lesley Goldberg

The first of the superhero dramas aired three seasons on the streaming giant.

Netflix's Marvel roster continues to shrink.

The streaming giant has canceled Daredevil — the first of its Marvel shows to premiere on the platform — after three seasons. The drama starring Charlie Cox is the third Marvel drama to be canceled at Netflix in recent weeks, joining Iron Fist and Luke Cage. Only Jessica Jones and The Punisher remain on Netflix as its Marvel relationship continues to sour. The move comes nearly two weeks after showrunner Erik Oleson pitched season four of Daredevil to Netflix and Marvel execs.

"Marvel’s Daredevil will not return for a fourth season on Netflix. We are tremendously proud of the show’s last and final season and although it’s painful for the fans, we feel it best to close this chapter on a high note. We’re thankful to our partners at Marvel, showrunner Erik Oleson, the show’s writers, stellar crew and incredible cast including Charlie Cox as Daredevil himself, and we’re grateful to the fans who have supported the show over the years. While the series on Netflix has ended, the three existing seasons will remain on the service for years to come, while the Daredevil character will live on in future projects for Marvel," Netflix said in a statement.

The cancellation arrives as Marvel corporate parent Disney is launching its own Netflix rival, Disney Plus. That direct-to-consumer service will feature a roster of high-profile Marvel series, including Loki, starring Tom Hiddleston. Disney previously announced plans to pull all of its Marvel feature films from Netflix and exclusively house them on Disney Plus. (Black Panther, Doctor Strange and Guardians of the Galaxy are currently streaming on Netflix — for now.) Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that the remaining Marvel TV series on Netflix — Jessica Jones and Daredevil spinoff The Punisher — will remain on the streamer until they run their course, per the companies' original five-show deal (which included since canceled Luke Cage, Iron Fist and mash-up miniseries The Defenders).

Marvel and Netflix's relationship has been strained by the negotiations over Luke Cage. Scripts for a potential third season were all but done when Netflix and Marvel were unable to come to terms for the new season. Sources note that issues included the total episode count as Netflix wanted to reduce the standard run of 13 to 10 in a bid to tighten the creative. Additionally, nearly all the Marvel dramas on Netflix have had creative issues that resulted in a revolving door of showrunner changes on series including Daredevil, Iron Fist and Jessica Jones. (The latter, which will return for its third season in 2019, saw creator/showrunner Melissa Rosenberg depart for a lucrative overall deal with Warner Bros. TV.)

The decision to cancel Daredevil arrives as Netflix has been looking for other properties to turn into lucrative franchises. The streamer's recent deals have included a massive pact for The Chronicles of Narnia, which it plans to turn into a film and TV universe; as well as pacts with comic creator Mark Millar for multiple TV shows and movies (and comics). Just this week, Netflix signed an eight-figure deal for rights to author Roald Dahl's properties with a larger goal of creating multiple animated TV series based on works including Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.

I don't get this one at all. Is Jessica Jones really getting more viewers? Doesn't even seem like the Punisher show had more viewers. I assume the guy playing Daredevil wants to move on to other things.

That’s probably tipping the renewal negotiations to where it’s no longer worth the investment. My guess is the other two just aren’t up for renewal yet. Maybe JJ already has a 3rd and likely final season locked up.

They’ll get cancelled too. Luke Cage and Iron First were cancelled right when DD season 3 dropped, that’s the only reason the waited to announce DD being cancelled.

It’s all just because of the Disney streaming service. I don’t know if Marvel/Disney actually own the full rights to the shows to be able to bring them back on Disney’s service since Netflix was involved in the actual development. But if so I’d definitely expect DD to come back there.

Netflix said as much in a statement that Daredevil (and the others) will live on elsewhere but the Netflix shows aren't going anywhere. doubtful that Marvel has the rights to stream the shows anywhere else. also debatable if they can, for instance, do a Daredevil Season 4 on the Disney Streaming Service and just pick up where they left on Netflix. they may just use the characters in all new shows like Hero's For Hire, Daughters of the Dragon, etc. or perhaps they'll just use them on any of their other shows or movies since now there's no "logistics" holding them back from doing that if they wanted to. that last part is all just speculation, but i bet that's what we'll see. also there's a rumor that the new Disney service will be "family friendly" and these Netflix shows can get pretty rough (especially Punisher) so i'm very curious to see how that goes if that's true.

like someone said above, since Disney (aka Marvel) is launching their OWN paid streaming network, Disney/Marvel is probably planning to develop some or all of these to use exclusively on THEIR service. Even though Disney was prob getting paid well to license these out, if they want folks to sign up for their OWN streaming service later, the more 'exclusive content' they can horde over there the better...makes sense for them in that regard....

who knows, maybe they can totally revamp and FIX Iron Fist (sheesh, that 1st season was SO bad that I haven't even gotten through the second yet...), and perhaps they can tweak improve Luke Cage just a bit. DD is solid through & through, so no need for changes there. Same goes for Punisher. JJ season 1 was 100% solid too, while season 2 went down a notch, so maybe just a tad bit of tightening up, tweaking on that one.

who knows, we'll see what they do....but in some way or form, I'm guessing some of these heroes will appear in some form or fashion somewhere after their Netflix life...if they go to the service I just hope they keep their R rated grit, cause that grittiness is an important element in some of them imo...

yo that was off the chain!! charlie cox really makes it look like he knows how to fight also, which honestly is weird because when he's not working with other stunt men he looks so uncoordinated. see him working on the heavy bag in the church in prior episode as an example. man, that scene was so well executed on all levels. plus if i'm not mistaken that was one continuous shot. i can't remember any cuts.

I only watched this once so far, but I do recall thinking 'aaah, I see what they did there ...it was fun to try catch where they swapped Charlie & the stuntman (spoiler: like when 'Matt' gets thrown behind the bed in that room...starts as stuntman, crawls from behind as Charlie. at least, thats what I remember thinking...I'll have to go back an rewatch again to confirm though...

that there were a couple hidden cuts in there, but it was actually a legit one shot:

How ‘Daredevil’ Pulled Off That 11-Minute Prison Breakout Scene in One Shot

(Warning: This story contains spoilers from the third season of Netflix’s “Daredevil”)

New “Daredevil” showrunner Erik Oleson had a lot of crazy ideas for his run on the third season of the Marvel TV drama.

And none were more insane than that ridiculous prison breakout scene in the fourth episode. The sequence, which is a single shot (meaning it was one camera continuously rolling with no cuts), spans 11-and-a-half minutes and features Matt Murdock (Charlie Cox) fighting his way out of a prison — without his superhero costume. Oleson himself was surprised that Marvel even allowed him to do it.

“When you’re a showrunner and you call up your studio and you tell them that you want the crew to show up for work, but not film a single frame, because instead you’re going to rehearse one shot for an entire day, pretty much any studio in town is going to tell you — you’re insane,” Oleson tells TheWrap. “But, Marvel gave its blessing.”

In the scene, Murdock is investigating a link between Wilson Fisk (Vincent D’Onofrio) and an Albanian crime syndicate, which he believes will invalidate a deal Fisk cut with the FBI that got him out of prison. But since Murdock is assumed dead following the events of “The Defenders,” he has to enter the prison under the guise of Foggy Nelson (Elden Henson), using his New York State Bar ID number to get in. Because of this, he does not have the luxury of putting on a mask. Fisk ends up using his connections to trap Murdock in the prison, forcing him to fight his way out.

The sequence was such a challenge to film that even Oleson and the episode’s director, Alex Garcia Lopez, had to build in safety nets. “ one single thing doesn’t go perfect, you can’t use it,” star Charlie Cox told TheWrap.

Oleson explained they set up dimly-lit corners in the hallways of the prison where they could’ve hidden a cut if they had to. “But when the crew and Charlie, and all of the moving pieces actually came together and pulled it off, in post-production I actually turned the lights up in the hallway, just slightly, so that the audience would be able to see that the camera never cuts,” said Oleson. “We ended up with a fight sequence I’m very hopeful is going to get our stunts team nominated for an Emmy.”

Even Cox said that at first, he also questioned whether they could pull it off, but he was “up for the challenge,” noting that the full day of rehearsals helped them get it right.

“We took a day off, rehearsed everything with the stunt team and the camera department and all of the departments,” Cox continued. “And then we came back and we just started trying to shoot it. And we got a couple of quite good takes, then we had a number of takes that didn’t quite work, or didn’t get through, and then we all went to lunch, and then it was when we came back from lunch we did one final take and it was, you know, pretty perfect.”

Cox described the difficulty of switching out with his stunt double, Chris Brewster, without the ability to edit the swap, saying that what made the sequence so challenging was remembering every little moment and executing each move perfectly.

“There’s one point in particular where, Chris is kicking someone from the floor, and he kicks and then his leg retracts, and then the leg kicks again but this time it’s my leg,” Cox explained. “And so… if there’s a moment where you can see both feet, then it doesn’t work, you know, you’ve ruined . So it has to be absolutely perfect.”

Cox continued that it’s “probably our greatest achievement thus far,” adding with a laugh: “And yes, I was, I felt incredibly beat up after that.”

Since it debuted in 2015, “Daredevil” has been lauded for its fight choreography. The show’s second episode featured a three-minute, single-shot scene that takes place in one hallway (known as “The Hallway Scene”). The prison break sequence was Oleson’s way of one-upping that, but also tied into his “series of rules” he imposed on the fight scenes this season.

“I very much wanted to treat the fight sequences as a way to force Matt Murdock into dilemmas, where he had to choose between two rights or two wrongs, and whatever he decided would give us an insight into his character,” he said. “I wanted to have real stakes. There had to be something beyond just seeing Daredevil fight.”

Cox echoed Oleson’s sentiment, saying that he wanted to know that there’s a reason behind every fight sequence. “It’s not just like action for action’s sake, or putting the black costume on just because it’s cool when we did it before.”

The end result of that action-packed sequence certainly carried the narrative significance that Oleson was hoping to achieve.

“Wilson Fisk is watching that video and now he knows for sure that Matt Murdock and Daredevil are the same person,” he explains. “For me personally, the best form of storytelling treats action sequences as an integral part of the character’s journey and of the plot.”

The third season of “Marvel’s Daredevil” debuted on Netflix Friday, Oct. 19.
